India hardly looked a side playing their first match in four months. Their batsmen pounded Sri Lanka for a 300-plus total; their bowling, for once, did not fall apart and led by Irfan Pathan, ensured the total was a winning one. Virat Kohli, now easily one of the best ODI batsmen in the world, cracked his third consecutive century against Sri Lanka, his fourth in five innings, and his fifth successive fifty-plus score, equalling the Indian record. Virender Sehwag resembled a man playing his first international game in nearly five months only briefly, before scattering the field with a 97-ball 96. Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni made sure India recovered from a slight wobble, adding 79 in nine overs towards the finish.

Kumar Sangakkara responded with his third century in four international games, also only his second ODI hundred at home, but by the time he got credible support at the other end from No. 8 Thisara Perera, the match had slipped too far out of Sri Lanka's grasp. Perera did give India a scare, smacking 44 off 28 deliveries, but the departure of Sangakkara in the 48th over ended a stand of 78 off 53, and also Sri Lanka's hopes.

India had looked rusty initially, as Sehwag played-and-missed three successive times in Nuwan Kulasekara's opening over. In the second over, he sliced Lasith Malinga straight to point, where Tillakaratne Dilshan put the catch down. In the third over, Gautam Gambhir was almost run-out when he was caught in a big mix-up with Sehwag. It was Dilshan, again, who missed the direct hit from point. Gambhir departed next ball though, bowled round his legs off a straight ball from Kulasekara. Soon enough though, India settled in, Sehwag and Kohli putting the powerful line-up on its way to another big total.

Kohli's arrival immediately brought stability to the middle. He likes to get forward, and did so to defend solidly. One such push even earned him three runs past extra cover. He slashed his third ball for four past point, and Sehwag soon took over.

A Malinga length ball was driven on the up past extra cover, Kulasekara was slammed down the ground. Mahela Jayawardene took out fine leg and put in deep point inside the first Powerplay. Sehwag's response was to drill Angelo Mathews over cover for four more. In the eleventh over, Sehwag, on 24, tried to loft Perera over extra cover but mistimed the stroke. Kulasekara ran in from mid-off and dived forward to take the ball but Sehwag escaped as replays proved inconclusive, as they usually do in such cases. Kulasekara also injured his groin during the attempt, and bowled only five overs. Two balls later, it was Kohli's turn to escape as Perera failed to hold on to a tough return chance to his left. Kohli was on 16 then.

By the time Sri Lanka separated the pair in the 32nd over, they had added 173 at almost a run a ball. It was a furious Sehwag who departed, four short of what would have been his 16th ODI ton, run out by Perera after being sent back by Kohli while attempting a single.

Smart stats

  • India's 314 is their 16th 300-plus score against Sri Lanka and their third such score against Sri Lanka in 2012. It is also the most number of 300-plus scores India have made against any team.
  • Virat Kohli's century is his 12th in ODIs and fourth against Sri Lanka. However, it is his first century in Sri Lanka. No batsman has scored more hundreds than Kohli in 2012.
  • Virender Sehwag's dismissal was the ninth instance of an Indian batsman being dismissed run out in the nineties. Sourav Ganguly is the only Indian batsman to be dismissed run out twice in the nineties.
  • The 173-run stand between Sehwag and Kohli is the fifth-highest second-wicket stand for India against Sri Lanka. It is, however, India's second-highest such stand in Sri Lanka.
  • Kumar Sangakkara's 133 is the fourth-highest score by a Sri Lankan batsman in an ODI defeat. While Tillakaratne Dilshan has made the highest such score twice (160), Sangakkara has also made 138 in the loss to India in Jaipur in 2005.
  • Sri Lanka's score of 293 is their fifth-highest in an unsuccessful chase and the second-highest score in a failed chase in home ODIs. The highest remains 411 against India in Rajkot in 2009.

India slipped from 180 for 1 to 228 for 4. Rohit Sharma was late on one that nipped back a bit and lost his off bail, before Kohli fell for 106, also a victim of Perera, caught sharply by substitute Sachithra Senanayake at extra cover in the 40th.

It looked as though Sri Lanka might keep things tidy in the final 10, with Raina and Dhoni picking off only one boundary in four overs. But then they launched, taking 64 off the final six overs - Raina got to a fifty off 44 balls, while Dhoni unleashed his signature helicopter shots - to make sure India got easily past the 300-run mark.

India's opening bowling pair of Zaheer Khan and Irfan generated enough movement in the first Powerplay to keep Sri Lanka to 41 for 1. R Ashwin took over and ensured Sri Lanka did not get away; he even bowled a wicket-maiden in the bowling Powerplay.

As the night grew darker in the forest surrounding the stadium, Sri Lanka's chances began to appear tougher. Sangakkara and Upul Tharanga did add 77 for the second wicket, but the stand ate up 105 balls and by the time the latter fell to Ashwin, the asking rate was approaching seven-and-a-half.

This was after Tillakaratne Dilshan had failed to capitalise, like Virender Sehwag had, on a dropped catch early in his innings. In Zaheer's opening over, Dilshan cracked his first ball for four, edged the second to slip only for Sehwag to clang it, and was out leg-before to his sixth, off Irfan, as he missed an attempted whip.

Sangakkara could have gone second ball, on 0, when he edged an away-going Irfan delivery just past second slip. He should have gone off Umesh Yadav's second ball, in the eleventh over, when he slashed between MS Dhoni and wide slip, but the wicketkeeper did not go for the catch.

Sangakkara struggled to accelerate during the middle of his innings, but he kept Sri Lanka going, even as his team-mates kept falling. No one from No. 1 to No. 7, barring Sangakkara, managed more than 28, falling to the pressure of the asking rate.

Sangakkara's century gave the crowd on the twin grass banks an opportunity to blow their horns louder, but even as he and Perera tried, the game had already blown away from Sri Lanka. To reach 293 from 191 for 6 in the 39th over was, in the end, quite an achievement.

@Nampally on (July 23 2012, 13:32 PM GMT)..I agree with your views on Rahul Sharma that he can bowl variations and bowl leg spin. But Rahul Sharma haven't played many first class matches like Ojha did to count his credibility. Also he doesn't have good T20 record compared to Ojha. Please check the stats here. http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/player/32130.html http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/player/272994.html Dhoni is looking for long term too when Ojha selected now, he is even for tests i feel. You can check the stats of both the players and come to conclusion.

Posted by cravin on (July 23, 2012, 17:02 GMT)

SL openers should be Dilsha & Kapugadara. Also we need Mendis in our team if we want to beat strong teams. Batting order need to change. Perara and Mathiew should bat higher specially when we are chasing 300+ scores and in the next t20 world cup.If the these players fail (Dilshan, Kapugdara,Perara & Mathew) then Sangakara & Mahela can build the innings.

@Nampally on (July 23 2012, 13:32 PM GMT)..Yadav was hammered only in last over very badly by Malinga. It was like match was in our hands there was little complacency shown by Yadav there. Should have bowled little faster and with little more will. He will be told to learn from these mistakes and not to be complacent next time. A mistake nevertheless. But he bowled good till 9th over only costly 60 runs also taking 2 wickets. Dhoni rightly mentioned that death over bowling is to be checked. Even experience player Zaheer got thrashed for 15 runs in death overs. So we should understand that let Yadav develop as a good death bowler too because he has pace, variations and deadly yorkers. So, he is big plus if you continue with him and give him confidence. India's problem right from it entered International arena is that we don't have real fast bowlers touching always 140's through out match. This guy Yadav can do. His body is perfect fast man body. So, let's give him more chances.

Posted by Nampally on (July 23, 2012, 13:32 GMT)

@praveen4honestremark: Yadev has pace but no control on his length & direction. He needs lot more practice in both these aspects. If you look at his record, he has always been an expensive bowler. But 77 runs in 10 overs is rather high for a pace bowler. To be honest, 314 is a big total to chase & SL nearly did it. I expected better control from Ojha but he too gave >7 runs/over. Ashwin & Pathan were both good. That should be the model for the bowlers to aim at. ZAK was too rusty & was very erratic. So there is lot of room for experimenting.Rahul is in the squad for ever but never gets a chance in the XI. I wonder why is he selected in the squad consistently but never play in XI. He must have talent to make the squad so consistently. Try him out. He is a bowler who is economical with fast leg breaks & googlies. If he fails, get a new leg spinner in the squad. There are other spinners like Apanna, Nadeem who are economical & suited for ODI format demands. India needs good bowlers NOW.

Sri Lanka will be Kholi's soft targer always. Expecting amazing unbeatable world records against Lanka (like sachin 200 against SA). Im sure he s going to fry the toothless lions of srilanka throughout his career

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (July 23, 2012, 7:01 GMT)

@Nampally .It's too early to assess Yadav and Ojha i feel, don't you think so?? They didn't bowled badly as the stats suggest.Yadav almost got Sanga wicket on 10, but that chance was missed in slips; failed to take that catch. Yadav took 2big wickets of the match,Chandimal and Sanga. With out any real fast bowler do you want India to go there and bowl? Zaheer,Irfan are almost same. Swing bowlers. So if both Zaheer and Pathan same kind, go wicketless what to do? A real fast bowler is always needed in team.Does Dinda has raw pace like Yadav to bowl lethal bowls?.Yes, he was expensive, rusty but we have to give him chances and trust to deliver the same speed at 140's even he goes a few, he will improve. If you remove him it's a huge loss to Indian speed bowling. And coming to Ojha ,he took a big wicket of Mahela ;was expensive too and only bowled 6 overs but it will not be same every game.Ojha will learn.Let's wait till this series on deciding on Ojha. Batting needs change ;Manoj for Rohit.

Too Many accumulators in the team. In SL balling line up most of the accumulators want to bat higher, some even want to open the innings in T20. Its time to give more aggressive batsmen like Banuka and Kapugadra a opportunity to bat higher

@Ameeega on (July 23 2012, 02:44 AM GMT)..Thank you man. Fair comment from you but not for all of your comment. We would like to win trophy :) :P

Posted by Ameeega on (July 23, 2012, 2:44 GMT)

As a SL fan, i congratulate Indians here. I am really amazed this young man, Kohli. SL should need to start thinking how to stop him. He is the real threat. And also, I feel shame of some SL fans finding some 'third class' excuses. We should accept, SL played bad, Ind did really well. And for the people criticizing Sanga, I would say, if Sanga did not do that, SL might have lost by 100 runs! Love to see SL bounce back, as in the Pak series, and lift the trophy.

Posted by Nampally on (July 23, 2012, 0:51 GMT)

Indian batting saved the day. But putting all eggs in batting is not the way to go as the England & Australian tours proved. In the second ODI, there should be some changes in the bowling department. Yadev & ojha were both disappointing in bowling. Parhaps these guys are not ODI players where economical bowling along with wicket taking ability are equally important.Rahul Sharma was very good in T-20 with both these attributes. Dhoni should try him. He can bowl his quota with <5 runs/over. Dinda is also an economical seamer with under 5 runs/over. A good slip fielder was also missing in the Indian line up. Is Rahane the right guy to field in the slips? Indian fielding especially catching needs a significant improvement. It was amazing that SL nearly chased 314 runs falling short by just 22 runs!. Indian XI is not cast in gold. So there is adequate room for experimenting. Why not Dhoni try at least 2 or 3 changes in ODI 2?

@Sinhaya on (July 22 2012, 17:33 PM GMT)..:) :)Ok. Thank you brother. You may be right in analyzing Srilanka team there. But i also think Mahela's captaincy is going defensive against India. I am not sure though, because you people can analyze it better than me. He is your captain and you people know more better i feel .Eagerly waiting for second match.

Posted by kc69 on (July 22, 2012, 21:28 GMT)

Even though i'm an Indian i like Sanga's batting its not his fault that others didnt support and Hats of to Kohli he's a gem. @sonyajones there isn't any India's tour of england atleast in 1 year but england and aus tour of India(where we will hammer them). Agree that india as a team didn't do well in past but i believe at home(sub-continent) we are still unbeatable. As of now i believe only SA is a team which can play well under any conditions(not even Eng and Aus)

Posted by Sinhaya on (July 22, 2012, 17:33 GMT)

@praveen4honestremark, I hope Dhammika Prasad will be called. He is the best as you may recall Dhammika Prasad's partnership in Perth this year in the CB series game against Aussies in Perth where we just fell short by 5 runs. By the way Dhammika Prasad should check his family tree. Who knows, he may be related to Venkatesh Prasad, haha kidding! I have to admit that our mindset and planning has in ODIs has been the poorest against India than any other team.

Posted by puntertakeson on (July 22, 2012, 16:46 GMT)

I think Indian bowling attack is better than Sri lanka. Apart from Malinga they don't have good bowler to contain or take wicket. In that front India is having advantage. Now Indians started to play malinga very well.

@lion69sl: Now this England Vs Ireland Analogy is even better....hehehehe...awesome dude...keep it up :)

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (July 22, 2012, 15:33 GMT)

I think you should not provoke and make sound if you even have won. Yes, we have won and i, we should be proud of that. But some people are provoking, teasing, making too much fun of loosing team is what is bad. I am not trying to be good here. Even i know, it is discussion panel but making fun of some one is bad . Srilanka played well and they gave us tough fight. They are tough opposition to play with; it's our time, we won let's be happy but not insult them. It's like this " Empty vessels make too much noise". So i suggest to few who are too much being bad towards opposition that, come on guys; leave it.

Posted by lion69sl on (July 22, 2012, 11:28 GMT)

the mistake D@ sri lanka did was when mathews got out they should better sent in thisara perera ahead off thirimanne as it was batting powerplay..then we might have seen a different story.jeewan mendis should include instead of herath next time..thirimanne should get chance to bowl 3,4 overs..shaminda eranga will be a good replacement for kula.

Posted by Sinhaya on (July 22, 2012, 11:26 GMT)

@praveen4honestremark, he is Shaminda Eranga and type the name on google. He took a wicket on his first ball in test cricket against Aussies last year. He is currently suffering from a back nerve injury meaning he is out of cricket till end of this year from what I recall.

@lion69sl.....loll.....funniest comment i hv ever heard of...i agree that my team India has been very disappointing since the world cup..nd i hv no shame in admitting it...but how can u say that S. L looses only to india nd they r world champions, when u hv lost to england, australia, pakistan, south africa, asia cup..u hv won only 1 series against pakistan since the world cup...really funny...even ur fellow sri lankans will laugh at ur comment

Posted by GreenGoat on (July 22, 2012, 11:07 GMT)

guys, credit where credit is due. india batted and bowled better than us... it remains a mystery why we are SO bad against india in recent times.... maybe we play too often and they cracked our styles better than we have theirs..

interesting that this is only sanga's 2nd ODI 100 in SL (and his worst 100 IMO)... whts up with that?!?! i think the thinking of having one set batsmen score slowly for xx overs is foolish, if batting is tough in a pitch, its the set batsman's responsibility to turn over the strike and make sure additional pressure doesnt fall on the new guy... we shud have the mentality of mid 2000s aussie teams where they will score at the required rate (or a bit less) whoever is at the crease until everyone gets out.

Posted by lion69sl on (July 22, 2012, 10:59 GMT)

i think shaminda eranga is the best swing bowler that srilanka has.he has the pace & the ability to swing the ball both ways..only he need is experience..unfortunately he has some injury problems..

Yadav bowled ok till his last over, where he gave 16 runs, he got the important chandimal,Sanga wicket. pathan got the more important Pereira wicket. Credit to Pathan and Yadav for the win.

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (July 22, 2012, 10:44 GMT)

With 2nd match also played on same venue, it would be interesting contest this time as both teams having played here once and now can analyze each other strengths. I feel SL might go for a spinner in 2nd ODI in place of Kulasekara. Some SL's were talking about Eranga. Not sure who he is, tried finding...Srilankan friends is he possible replacement as far you know??

Posted by g.narsimha on (July 22, 2012, 10:35 GMT)

INMDIA BAAL- I Cant stop myself of laughing on u r coments , CHINA is not playing cricket , here the team which conceded 300+ CAN BE TERMED AS WORSE than the team defeded it , whether u followed this match i dont know but untill last few overs indians bowled beatifully not allowing SL batters even SANGA could not go as per the required run rate , there is no point in criticising for thev sack of critcise ,

Posted by lion69sl on (July 22, 2012, 10:29 GMT)

Sri lanka are defenetely the best team out of these 2 teams, but when it comes to sl vs ind tour ind are playing better against us,that's because we are palying too much against each other recentely.indians used to our tactics and players.that's why they shehwag n kohli playing better against us,bt i should remember this to all indian fans,sl beaten very badly in the 1st ODI in the recently concluded PAK series n they went on to win the series 3-1..

PARRERA32-It is always branded as weak bowling than how could we are winning matches if u r bowling is that much great than how could u r team conceding 300+ most of the time against us, if our bowlers are rubbish than how could u r batters failing every where to chage down the targets , really it was u r teams bowling which led the defeat, u r 2 strick bowlers MALINGA, HERATH were just treated as club levels ,u r playing in u r own wickets & i believe SL will defenitly bounce back , both the teams are blessed with few great strok makers , its really a treat to watch these teams , better luck for SL in the next game .

SUMANTO DEY-- it is not that indians bowled badly in this match THE PLUS POINT IS R.ASHWINs BOWLING SURLY HE WAS BETTER BOWLERS FROM EITHER SIDE in this match . Y adavs bowling figures were spoiled by MALINGA in the last over otherwise he too was impressive till that piont but inthe last few overs of SL innings IND team took it lightly assured of a comfortable win , they shouild not have been coplacent other wise match would have been won by 50+ margin .

@Sonya Jones..such a one sided comments,u want india to tour eng or aus to get thrashed yet forgetting that ur team was thrashed in the so called flat pitches time and again..just few months back ur team lost 0-3 in UAE,lost in india ever since,y cant ur team manages to play well in these flat pitches??y u want india to play in ur picthes?cant ur team d the same in our pitches?oh yea the only way u can beat any team is by playing at ur own track especially against the subcontinent teams thats y u want india to play at ur pitches..forgot the 5-0 thrashing in odis last october??yea it happened in the same flat pitches, come again and this time we will strip u from ur top4 rankings as well..since reaching no.1 ur team lost 4tests and won just one, did'nt managed to win any series since then..and now struggling against SA..so better take care of ur own team rather than boasting here

@ Harmony111 .. OMG ! I just couldn't agree more. U r indeed a fine debater. Last time when India toured Lanka for 3 Match test series; In one of the matches, SL batsmen scored tons of runs in 1st innings, Everyone (including comments during Live commentary on cricinfo itself) praised SL batsmen, bashed Indian bowling attack, no one talked about pitch BUT when Indian batsmen scored more runs than SL in their 1st innings, everyone started discussing how FLAT the track is. I know our bowling attack is NOT so great but I just hate double standard-people.

@ian_ghose: Hard for me to guess where you come from so I will fill the entire canvas for you. If you are English then have you forgotten your 0-5 ODI whip in India, 1-6 ODI whip in Oz and 0-3 Test whip in UAE? If you are Oz then have you forgotten your 0-4 ODI whip in UK of late and your 47 a.o.? If you are Pakistani then have you forgotten your 0-4 ODI and T20 whip to Eng in UAE? It is unlikely but if you are BD then boy you have been the fav whipping boy since the big bang and it is yet to end for you so no question of BD forgetting it. And I would bet my tooth that you are not a Kiwi or WI or Zim - those people are way too gentle. Finally, IF YOU ARE A SL by any means then you actually mocked at your own team while you thought you were being sarcastic on India. A SL fan saying that SL is the only team India can beat - Ha Ha Ha. This reminds me of a dialogue in the Hindi Movie DHAMAAL - "If you hit me then it is fine but don't hit my dear boss Else ---- (another slap to the boss)".

@Mayura Prasad..it was not SL who kicked out india from the CB series bcoz SL won just one game against india in that series,it was australia who ousted india out of the final bcoz india did'nt managed to handle aus team

excuses from SLfans started pouring in as is/was the trend..sehwag was given not out bcoz the camera views were inconclusive and from one angle it was showing ball touching the ground, with or without DRS the camera is still the same,so the result wud have been the same..and SL fans conviniently forget that sanga was given not out when he's clearly run out and the camera was showing his bat on the line..regrading mathews bowling to raina, the hawkeye clearly showed that the ball pitched outside the line of leg stump, for god sake stop giving silly excuses for ur loss...fans r so biased that they can see only their side..

@Sonya Jones:Oh yeah, unquestionably India will get thrashed in their ''upcoming tour of England''...will you be kind enough to enlighten us as to when this tour of England by India will be taking place?? Because it seems like i have been living under a rock for quite a while because i had no clue that India will be touring England in the near future...and forgive me if i am wrong but i do believe that Eng will be touring Ind shortly and not the other way round..as far as Eng ''Thrashing'' India in India is concerned, well hold your horses because Eng will get their chance shortly to do just that...lastly,the performance of both Aus and Eng in India have been no great shakes either...so please stop posting hypocritical comments for the sake of it....

@sonya jones, lol have u forgot the whitewash that eng team faced when they visited ind last year and hav u forgot the whitewash aus faced when they came to india for 2 test series.no team is good when they go to overseas.eng don't deserve to be no.1 side.they were thrshed pak in test series and now they are getting tonked by sa.ind will thrash eng later this year..

Well done India. The bowling department is still a big worry though. I can't believe the SL fans are complaining about Sanga! If you know cricket, you can't seriously expect a one-down batsman to go at a higher strike rate when 28 is the top score among the other six batsmen at the top! Sanga atleast gave SL a chance, which no one else did.

Posted by cricfan100 on (July 22, 2012, 7:37 GMT)

"Sangakkara and Upul Tharanga did add 77 for the second wicket, but the stand ate up 105 balls and by the time the latter fell to Ashwin, the asking rate was approaching seven-and-a-half." This beatifully sums up why sri lanka lost. This is why we need an attacking opener replacing tharanga. you can't have both tharanga and sanga playing safe in first 15 overs especially against india in flat tracks. that puts immense pressure on rest of the batting line up. I really think bhanuka should be opening. He is not a slogger. Has a decent technique to cope with the new ball and very aggressive. Though I want sri lanka to win, with this batting line up having thranga and sanga playing along side each other, chances are very thin. No doubt tharanga is a good player, but sanga tharanga partnership drags us backwards. If this is continued i won't be surprised sri lanka loosing the series 4-1.

2 things we learned from the past 5-6 matches ..# india's bowling in the slog is becoming worse ... the lose against bangladesh , and other occasions in cb series and asia cup .. being continued...STILL IRFAN ..DID THE BEST !!! ... #India doesnt find any trouble in making a 300+ .. Viru, sachin, gauti, kohli, rohit all rising to occasions ...but the big credit goes to raina and msd for making this look simple in all these games .. .

@ Bruisers.. you may be correct on what your saying.. but what I'am trying to say is, its high time to go for DRS system by getting rid of this conclusive & inconclusive stuff which doesn't have any proper acceptable method.. With this current system, lot of decisions given as out / not out are wrong .. not only in this match but even in the series between SL vs PK this was a clear issue....

India's 314 is their 16th 300-plus score against Sri Lanka and their third such score against Sri Lanka in 2012. It is also the most number of 300-plus scores India have made against any team.

@bMike - whr r u? don't hide buddy!!! Flat track bullies dig your side on the home soil. hahahahaha........Nice to see most of the SL fans are crying with some lollypop explanation. Whatever you say India is always better than Sri Lanka. How many match do you want to prove that? In WC final, CB series, ASIA Cup and now in the home ground. Keep in mind that Indian team is playing with full strength in this series. Strong Batting, Bowling & Young side. So it will be a big headache for Sri Lanka team to face. You have already seen in WC final. In CB series & ASIA cup, India is not a not an strong side especially in the bowling dept., but they managed to play till in the end of the tournament with competitive game. But this time it is totally a different side. Bowling department is looking so strong with Pace with Zak return, Umesh, Irfan, & Spin with Ashwin, Rahul Sharma & Ojha & don't forget the part timers Sehwag, Raina, Rohit, Kohli etc., So let's wait to see the rest of the contest.

Indian team is well balanced except for one spot. Rohit Sharma being in the team is hurting team. Some people here and commentators saying Rohit is more talented than Kohli. People who are saying that, do they really understand what is talent?? Rahul Dravid said talent is not that only stroke making and foot work, because many good players like Kambli have not been successful in cricketing career even though having talent in having skills, but you should also have temperament, discipline, dedication, good management, patience etc. If all come together then you can become a good player, not alone by skills. So Rohit as we are seeing from some years is just a stroke maker with out many of other characters in him. He doesn't have good temperament,Lazy elegance .If he changes all in him he will be suited for International cricket. Manoj tiwary need to be taken in place of Rohit. Now, in case of bowling it was okay performance altogether. But special, good performances were Irfan, Ashwin.

Good win for India...although I still feel that they allowed the SL innings to drag on a little bit longer than necessary...the Indian bowlers need to be far more clinical and finish off the opposition better once they have them on the mat...SL were behind the eight ball from the time they conceded 300...and although they did manage to reach 290.. India were able to win rather comfortably...

Have to agree with all of the plaudits for Kohli - he was clearly the best Indian batsmen in all formats on their losing tour of AUS - he just had so much composure and time to play his shots, and he scores at a good clip in Tests as well. Sangakkara is pure class & consistency, just hope SL can bounce back and win game 2. I think a few of the Indian fans are a bit over-confident. Malinga is ineffective against any opposition on his day, not just India. He seems to have far too many games with an 8+ econonmy rate in ODI's for my liking.

Posted by QingdaoXI on (July 22, 2012, 4:53 GMT)

Nice win for India, Once Yuvi is back India should Always Have Yuvi and Irfan in Playing XI for One days and T-20, they both are geniune allrounder which India is searching from long time. Whether they fail in 1 or 2 matches but they can compensate in other dept. So if India is thinking to defend the title in 2015 this 2 players name should always be there on the sheet. So we will have 4 left handers batsmen in playing XI. Gautam, Suresh, Yuvraj and Irfan and for bowling we can play 2 fast/fast medium bowlers and 2 spinners and have lot of option. And for Sri Lankan fans, you always single-out Indians Fans, but the real thing is that your thinking is not good against India, but it is only India who helps Sri Lanka to come out of crisis. Eg. this series was the test series but Sri Lanka change it to limited over cricket only to generate revenue. So be clam and try to appreciate the win or loss of your neighbours.

Posted by LillianThomson on (July 22, 2012, 4:46 GMT)

No wonder India and Sri Lanka are about to plummet so low in the Test rankings: 600+ runs for 15 wickets, what a boring run-fest! Sooner or later they need to learn that bowlers have to get people out, which requires more sporting pitches and better bowlers.

Posted by Harmony111 on (July 22, 2012, 4:34 GMT)

Prior to this match the SL fans were saying that SL will thrash India "As they had thrashed India in the Asia Cup and in the CB series lol". Prior to this match the SL fans were saying that India's past wins over SL have been due to lucky toss wins. They said India won the WC final cos there was dew in the2nd innings but hello, it was SL that had won the toss. They said India's chase 321 in 37 overs was a mere one-off thing. They said that India's prev wins in SL were all due to winning the toss since they believe that if India bat first then the pitch becomes difficult to bat in the 2nd innings and if India bowl first then the pitch is helpful in the 1st innings and flat in the 2nd innings. All in all, SL fans were like India never win due to their own skill. Prior to this match, SL fans had said that NOW THE PITCHES HAVE BEEN REMADE AND TOSS IS NO LONGER IMP but now their refrain is that India won cos the pitch was difficult to bat on in the 2nd innings. ROTFL.

Posted by siriherath on (July 22, 2012, 4:29 GMT)

Kohli looks like he will play for India continuously until he's old and tired. He is sure enough a very talented test bat too. He's lucky to get into the Indian team just after his heroics as the captain of the under 19 outfit, while other equally or more talented youngsters are still languishing at the door. Unmukt Chand is a player who deserves a shot at the earliest before he joins scores of other talented youngsters as a has been ending up scoring 100s in the interstate matches.

have anyone noticed the change in irfan's action from the cb series or asia cup where his bowling arm was high but now remodelled his action back to the old.irfan's strength is swing and even if you eae his hat-trick balls the pace is not there..may be irfan has got back the swing he once had .

Posted by India_boy on (July 22, 2012, 4:24 GMT)

@all Indian and SL fans who think that Sanga's century cost them the match - Dont forget that for some teams no.3 plays the role of sheet anchor, just like Dravid used to do. When Dravid(no offence to him, he is my most fave player) used to score a slow century we used to say he played the part of anchoring perfectly. But the problem here is that SL doesnt have consistent big hitters like India had in Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Raina etc. to cover up for Dravid's anchoring. sanga played his part in an almost perfect manner. he was tied between accelerating and providing anchoring around falling wickets. Most of the blame lies on Tharanga, Mahela and Chandimal.they were supposed to go for runs around sanga and they didnt. Dont blame sangakkara, whatever respect and ranking SL has at the moment is because of him

Posted by AussieGreek on (July 22, 2012, 4:07 GMT)

Kohli is the new Ricky Ponting, he has done a great job for India batting at number 3 the last 2 years and should take Dravids spot at number 3 in Test matches. I think he would have similar success at 3 as he is very good at playing short pitched deliveries as compared with other Indian batsmen. His hooking and cutting is as good as a younger Ricky Ponting. This may allow Raina another opportunity to play tests lower down the order and face an older ball and more tired fast bowlers.

Posted by bMike on (July 22, 2012, 3:59 GMT)

India is so lucky this time. Even though they won the match don't forget that SL played with only 10 players more than halfway of the match. If Kulasekara was able to bowl 10 overs India's maximum score would be 290 & if Kulasekara was able to bat at no 9 SL would definitely chase down that target in 49 overs. But don't forget that luck doesn't work every time. SL will thrash India for sure in the next match & I feel terribly sorry for Indian fans

Posted by siriherath on (July 22, 2012, 3:58 GMT)

Sri Lanka's number one problem in matching up to the top five teams is unquestionably its bowling. SL sadly, have neither the pace or spin to an imposing level realistically, to question top class batsmen. The odd win here or there thanks mostly to errors and misjudgments of the silly kind of the opposing batsmen, cannot hide the glaring holes of the feeble bowling activity (attack is not the right word here).Nor will they transform SL to a fighting bowling force. SL needs to do something quick to nurture a pool of young bowlers who shows promise and potential to stand up to world class batsmen. The era of Vaas, Nuwan Zoysa and Murali is but a memory. The future bowlers need not be exact replications of these greats, nevertheless they need to be there or thereabout in skill, and creativity to outsmart top batsmen. Because SL and its magnificent, followers of cricket cannot afford to carry on just wishing and hoping at each match.

Posted by basophil on (July 22, 2012, 3:42 GMT)

why is everyone blaming sanga's slow batting? if you saw the sri lankan innings, you'd see that there was some swing on offer in the first 12-13 overs and both irfan and zaheer exploited it well - irfan's first spell was 6-1-20-1 and zaheer's first spell 6-0-20-1. people also need to stop criticizing india's bowling as horrible since we bowled well throughout but admittedly our death bowling needs some working. all in all, it was the tight bowling from irfan, zaheer, and ashwin that put the target way beyond sri lanka. also, i think rohit should be given a longer run though i would really love to see rahane in the side since he did well in the odis in fast pitches of england; he needs to be honed for the 2015 world cup. i also feel bad for manoj tiwary - one reason that yuvraj coming back might not be the best thing

Posted by cjchanaka on (July 22, 2012, 3:37 GMT)

Normally sanga is not a good chaser and also malinga is not threatening at all against india. It is a very bad effect from IPL. Jeewan should enter instead of lahiru, right arm leg spinner can be useful against india. SL should definetely find a way to tacle kholi. He is in good form recent past. Although indian batsmans are not technically sound , they are pretty dangerous in dry deadly pitches. I think SL will win the next game, good luck.

Posted by   on (July 22, 2012, 3:30 GMT)

Yawn. Both teams are ordinary and can only play on flat wickets. Wait till they play England or Australia, especially on their wickets. Another thrashing will take place, especially for India in the upcoming tour of England.

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (July 22, 2012, 3:28 GMT)

I feel sorry for Sangakkara(i am not Sanga fan). Yes, he doesn't have arm power as likes of Dhoni's to hit, but he can hit fours easily. I don't understand why some Srilankan's are not understanding that real problem lies with strategy and their captains thinking. I never saw any good captain opting for a draw when he has chance to win. I am referring to Mahela's captaincy in last test match against Pakistan and that sort of negativity if continued he will be a player of excuses. That negativity extended into this game too. In this game should have realized that batting order need to be shuffled according to situation and team demands, but lot of excuses at the talk during presentation ceremony. You see in Indian cricket where Dhoni, Raina, and middle order shuffles giving less clue to opposition. You can see that happening in WC 2011 final against you Srilankans. Even Srilanka can do that. The immediate thing you can do is remove Mahela or tell him to change his thinking.

Posted by Romenevans on (July 22, 2012, 2:36 GMT)

Kohli, just one word, CHAMP! Well done! Whats up with "Rohit The Super Talented Failed To Deliver Sharma"...i mean how many chances he will be served in a silver platter? Just because of him players like Ajinkya Rahane and Manoj Tiwari are not getting enough chances. I have seriously no idea how Rohit manage to get in the team after scoring once in a blue moon type of an Inning in IPL. Ridiculous to say the least!

Posted by   on (July 22, 2012, 2:31 GMT)

india should change rohit sharma he was not good in consistence batting, give a chance to Ajinkya Rahane at rohit's place he can bat well then rohit.

No.4 spot is going away from Rohit Sharma....and it will go once Yuvi makes his comeback....Balaji should be given a chance to play..he is a class bowler, someone who youngsters like Aaron and Yadav can learn from. And Sehwag man, wth?!

Posted by jlkasdh on (July 22, 2012, 2:26 GMT)

It is to say that India however manages a win through the likes of virat kohli and very rare hard hitter and genius virender sehwag but to see in the sri lankan cricket team side that kumar sangakkara is always scoring runs for his country in real i need to appreciate him though he is a sri lankan ..... but in our team all players in INDIA is always concentrating to play good cricket in IPL not for Team India.... bowling is not a mode for indian cricket team i insists that all the cricket fans in our country should not support for ipl and to pray that our team to develop in the bowling format

Posted by   on (July 22, 2012, 2:18 GMT)

By the time we wake up (beyond the influential powers) that Rohit Sharma is a waste, it would be too late for another fitting youngster. I have no doubt that he is able to survive one-off successes in every tour due to backing from some effective quarters only and not by his abilities or capabilities

@fr600 just seeing the scoreboard isnt enough , nxt time watch the match sanga has cost you the match with his very slow tortise like batting till 35th over

EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED BY DEATH OVER BOWLING BY INDIA . OUR BOWLERS SHOULD NEED TO FINISH THIS GAME MUCH QUICKER . UMESH NEEDS TO CONTROL RUN FLOW .

Posted by   on (July 22, 2012, 1:57 GMT)

classic way to victory for India, putting on 300 plus. Virat kohli, man, its exciting to watch every match of india, because this man is gettng one step closer to the century milestone of tendulkar, and kohli is not even selfsh, the best part about his game , is his ablity to adapt to a situation and turn it into a win, whether he is chasing or helping set up a score. Irfan you are just great, the most Underated player on the indian team, seriously love dhoni, but i hate the fact that he has discriminated against pathan in the past, hopefully he understands the importance of having him in the team. no need to kick him off because one day he bowled bad, i am sure he willl make up for it with the bat, thats what makes him a great player. i cant wait to see yuvi come back, and we will have one more solid player in middle order.

Posted by PKosgoda on (July 22, 2012, 1:41 GMT)

We could do better if we had concentrated more on spinners rather than these half bowlers, We should give opportunities to true spinners in the Country such as Ajantha Mendis, Sachithra Senanayake, Dulanjana Mendis, Malinda Pushpakumara,...without sticking with henchmen. Any aging cricketer may have control & accuracy over his bowling but the Country badly needs spinners with good strike rate who can spin (without the help of bowlers' foot-holds) have more variety in their bowling. We also need batsmen that has total control over their stroke play because when the top-order start playing false (play&miss), edgy & lofted strokes from the very 1st bowl, they are never in position to demoralize a bowling attack. SLan officials responsible for picking players appears to be taken advices from from unorthodox batsmen.

Posted by Prem2248 on (July 22, 2012, 1:24 GMT)

One can't bat for himself at this position.TheNo3 is meant for stroke filled batters with total control over their stroke play, can perform on all surface. If we had the kind of s'ctors that of Eng & SA, these reckless-hitting senior front-liners would have been dropped long time ago. It is total ignorance of officials responsible, that we don't see any viable constructive planning has been made for the continuity of the Game. When the Country has quality batters the class of Rosen Silva (a top batter in the YouthWC 2007) Khausal Silva, AngeloPerera(Best Schoolboy batter of 2009)AshenSilva, Bhanuka(Best Schoolboy Cricketer of years 2010&2011 and a top batter in the Youth WC 2010)Maneshan,...who carry 1st Cl Ba Av around 50,there is no need of flat track bullies. You can't groom players for the future by asking them to watch & learn from reckless hitting seniors rather than allowing them to perform at top level. The s'ctors seems to have no clue what's required of a frontline batter.

Improving further the form and team strength after winning a match is difficult and Iam happy to find some comments on improvement. Bowling has been a weakness since last 2 years once kumble retired. spin has been a challenge where the continuous failure of the second spinner will be a big trouble.

what Dhoni can do if he replaces bleeding ozha with yadav and he goes for moe worst.r 300plus laboured by batsmen looks easily achievable for other team. and when batsmen fail we are nothing better than lot of mediocre teams.

our problem is in India everyone wants to become a great batsman, loves to plunder 4s and 6s. We do not churn out like our neighbour the fast bowlers. High time BCCI should think on developing fast bowling interest in Indian aspiring players.

its a big challenge and we are losing out on time and generally we bask under wins and totally shattered when start losing rather than learning our loopholes.

Hope all realise for the better

@ahmed hussain,,,then y u are bothered watching this series,,u can stick to bangladesh-ireland series

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (July 22, 2012, 0:29 GMT)

The game was with intense fight from both sides. Like that.Sangakkara was a bit slow until his 60's but you cannot blame him completely. The main problem with Srilanka is lack of game plan to counter India. Where was the game plan to go with required run rate when Dilshan got out?? Tharanga and Sanga are left handers and both almost play same; building innings is their role. So Chandimal or Jayawardene at that position would have been good who can counter attack. Negative body language by Mahela these days when he plays India so that's why he goes into grove while planning tactics. So, Srilanka worry is their tactics. They should get things in order before 2nd match.Hard luck Srilanka this one day.India may have won but the mistake of Dhoni not going for catch in slips of Sanga's bat in Yadav's over luckily didn't cost us game. Dhoni should learn to take those catches or talk with Sehwag clearly on slip catches before match on who should go for that. Well played team India. Team work :)

Classy India !! @randikaayya - Always complaining. Think you understand cricket?

Posted by piyo_thanda_jiyo_thanda on (July 21, 2012, 23:56 GMT)

@Ahmad Uetian -- That's what everybody was saying about Virat Kohli also before Aus series. You just wait and watch buddy. Rohit has an AMAZING amount of talent. Only his temperament needs some tweaking. And once he does that, he (and India) will be unstoppable.

Posted by maddy20 on (July 21, 2012, 23:55 GMT)

Rohit Sharma, Pragyan Ojha need to be sacked with immediate effect. There are a lot of good spinners in our U-19 team and Ranji teams. Iqbal Abdullah, Shahdab Jakati to name a few who have great variations in their armoury. Atleast Amit Mishra is better than Ojha and he has the experience to do well in foreign conditions. If persisted with, Ojha's length balls are gonna cost us a lot of games, now and in future!

Posted by   on (July 21, 2012, 23:52 GMT)

sanga and tharanga batted so poorly and didnt go for runs...otherwise SL should have chased this

Posted by piyo_thanda_jiyo_thanda on (July 21, 2012, 23:51 GMT)

Top class performance from India. Never let Lanka into the match even for a second. I think we all know now which way the series is going to go. Way to go world champs !!

Posted by Nampally on (July 21, 2012, 23:50 GMT)

India need to toghten up the runs/over given to SL. Yadev & Ojha both were very expensive @> 7runs/over. Even ZAK was not his usual self. Is it rust showing ZAK? However Yadev & ojha need to bowl much tighter length. If Ojha does not tighten up, Rahul has a much better economy rate. He deserves a chance instead of warming the bench. Irfan was the best bowler but bit unlucky. Rohit Sharma is playing himself out of the XI thru' his poor batting. He needs to realize that there are many competing for his spot. India needs a reliable #4 bat. India cannot have such inconsistent batsman at #4. On the whole it was a fine overall effort although fielding & bowling left lot to be desired. As usual the batting carried India thru. I am sure Gambhir will bat much better in the next ODI. India played well for for a well deserved Win.

Posted by Singh_81 on (July 21, 2012, 23:50 GMT)

A tipical batting display and also tipical bowling performance, inorder to be Worldclass you have t0 be good in both department not just batting.Shame for india that they never look to improve there bowling.Pace for umaesh no accuarcy , Irfan Bit of accuracy in this match, No PACE and you never no that whats going to happen with the accuarcy for Irfan tomorrow, Eratic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Virat Kohli you little champion !!! What a player this young man is turning out to be. He's surely got Sri Lanka's number on his back lol. A bright future for India is ahead, at least in the ODI format. They played like world champions. Bad luck to Sanga and team. What a magnificent innings by Sanga. It was breathtaking. The wicket of Mahela cost them the game. It was bad to see Kulasekara walk away with injury but these things happen in sports. Still, very happy to see India win. I hope this continues into the next game as well. Good luck.

Good win but bowling is a huge concern for India going into T20 WC later this year.

Posted by param_johal_96 on (July 21, 2012, 23:00 GMT)

Can somebody tell me why BCCI insist on putting players like Rohit Sharma in the team. Its so frustrating, because he can potentially be blocking somebody else's chance of getting in to the team. Yes, he has potential- but so do many others, and he has shown he cannot back his ''ability'' once at the crease for India. This also was the case for Mark Ramprakash for England, he had undoubted potential, and showed it consistently at first class level. However when given multiple chances to prove his worth to the national team, he failed to do so. India, should move on unless his performances show otherwise in this series and look for a reliable, consistent performer who is worthy of the spot.

Posted by JustIPL on (July 21, 2012, 22:28 GMT)

Umesh Yadav had very nearly lost it for India. I am sure he will be instrumental to make India lose crucial games if he is still persisted with. On the other hand Irfan has come good in this match but we all know how inconsistent he has been in the past. SL have to get out Kohli, Sehwag and Dhoni cheaply if they have to win comprehensively.

Posted by   on (July 21, 2012, 22:28 GMT)

I am just wonder about Indian batsman are too good to play. If there bowling can support their team then India would be a great team...in contrast Pakistan has a great bowling talent if they have batsman like India's than it will be different thinks. Now in the world their is now super power team after the Australians got down from their standard.....In average Sri Lanka always maintain a good standard in their playing....

Posted by   on (July 21, 2012, 22:03 GMT)

So how many runs our NOHIT SHARMA made this time? Its unbeleivable how many chances he has gotten till now. This guy is a pathetic sight on pitch. Clean bowled to a straight delivery and you think he is India's next big hope. Selectors must be kidding by selecting him again and again... Shameful..

Posted by dheerajshetty on (July 21, 2012, 22:01 GMT)

Rohit Sharma looked terrible, And the break Ajay Jadeja said that Rohit Sharma was more talented than Virat Kohli, bUt Virat Kohli is a hardworker hence has been better than Sharma, seriously how is talent measured?, its beyond me, time and time again Rohit Sharma keeps getting oraising no matter what.

Posted by dheerajshetty on (July 21, 2012, 21:56 GMT)

@randikaayya: Then what about Sangakara's run out, replays clearly showed that he was out, his bat was on the line when the bails were dislodged, but 3rd umpire shockingly ruled it out towards SL's favour which gave SL a chance, and Sangakara went on to hit 133.

Posted by   on (July 21, 2012, 21:53 GMT)

Posted by cool2cool on (July 21, 2012, 21:51 GMT)

@Rajith Gunawardena : How the DRS would had changed the outcome of this match? Even with the DRS, umpires would have the same camera angles to judge whether Sehwag's catch was clean or not. And how did you forget Sanga's run-out?

I enjoy every match that these two teams play. Always good cricket and ups & downs. I don't get why many posts complain about too many matches between Ind and SL. As the final score confirms, the result could have gone either way. Well played SL! You will get a chance to make up next game!

Posted by maddy20 on (July 21, 2012, 21:14 GMT)

@randikaayya First up Sehwag was not out. See the picture in "Kula out of the series article" The third grab shows the ball touching the ground and his fingers on top of it. If it was me I would be embarssed to claim the catch in the first place! And we all saw how well SL have done after getting Sehwag out for a duck in WC final!

Posted by balajeev on (July 21, 2012, 21:11 GMT)

India won. Great. But is there any point in this series ? Why do India and Sri Lanka play each other so often ?

Posted by randikaayya on (July 21, 2012, 20:37 GMT)

The Author in his excitement seemed to have forgotten the repreive India got when tow birds were felled by 1 stone. Kula caught Sehwag and in the process injured himself. The outcome was that SL lost their bowling spearhead while Sehwag was given not out by the umpires in a cruel twist of fate. Outfield catches being disallowed because the cameras failed to focus properly is a real shame.. In this case match could have ended up quite differently too!

Ind v SL shd now be classified as Domestic rather than Internationals!

Posted by sysubrceq0 on (July 21, 2012, 20:23 GMT)

@ Mark2011 - Have to say only one thing...

" 35.5 - Mathews to Raina, no run, Huge appeal for lbw, Mathews can't believe it has been turned down, struck Raina dead in line as he moved across but it may have pitched outside leg stump, if it did you can't give those out. We did see one replay but without the pitch map, hard to tell from there

We now see a replay with the pitch map, it just pitched marginally outside leg stump. So the decision was correct " this is from Cricinfo commentry.. So Raina was not out and the umpire decision is correct.

Posted by Perera32 on (July 21, 2012, 20:17 GMT)

Why are people saying Sanga was selfish??, He kept wickets for 50 overs and batted for almost 50 overs. He played the anchoring role but no one supported him. Sri Lanka batted pretty well after a poor fielding and bowling effort. 120 and 130 was easily defended in the t20's vs Pakistan last month, Batting is very difficult in the 2nd Innings in Hambantota so I think Sri Lanka did well getting up to 290. Kohli played brilliantly and deserved to be MoM. However I think India's bowling is still very weak and Im sure Sri Lanka will bounce back.

Posted by   on (July 21, 2012, 20:14 GMT)

@mark2011 HAWKEYE proved umpires right in all the appeals. DRS won't have made any difference like some people claim.

Posted by suve on (July 21, 2012, 20:11 GMT)

@Bruisers: Mate a little bit of the bat was past the line, it was not out. Sehwag's catch was clean, both angles didn't show the ball touching the ground and Players like Kulasekara are honest players and wouldn't appeal for a catch if he thought he'd dropped it.

Posted by   on (July 21, 2012, 20:09 GMT)

I m Pakistani and sad to know the caliber of our batsmen.....Pak was finding it so difficult to even make 200 on these pitches where india Made 300 easily.....

Posted by ranilranathunga on (July 21, 2012, 20:05 GMT)

Its bcoz of Sanga we lost the match, his batting was too slow and was putting so much pressure on the other batsman. So other batsman didnt have time to settle down, His strike rate was 60-65 for most of the time, which is really slow, Even commentators were saying this. Most of the time Sanga Scores in a one day, we lose.

Posted by maddy20 on (July 21, 2012, 19:47 GMT)

While the bowling was good enough, the fielding was sloppy. They should have had Sanga when he was less than 10. Sehwag is no longer a reliable slip fielder. Its better to have someone like Gambhir(who is used to fielding at short leg and has sharp reflexes) to stand in the slips. Otherwise it was a pretty solid performance and Sl never looked like getting close. Some late fireworks from Malinga reduced the margin a little but all in all a decent show from team coming back from a 6-week break! With Kulasekara out of the series things are gonna get a lot worse for SL unless Fernando replaces him. @Rajith Gunawardena That was already referred to the third umpire. Replays were inconclusive and I personally thought that the ball hit the ground through Kula's fingers. A valiant effort but the third umpire ruled it infavor of the batsman, which is fair enough. Its funny that the Sri Lankan fans have to make silly excuses to hide their embarrassment after predicting 5-0 and what not

Glad Irfan got his chance over Vinay Kumar. I am sure if Vinay kumar was bowling his dibbly dobblies, the result would have been different. Sanga played an amazing innings on this difficult pitch. No one of the top order did support him. Dilshan is as usual an easy prey to swinging deliveries on the stump. Mahela is out of form, Chandimal is mediocre, Mathews failed. Too much was left for Perera.

Posted by mark2011 on (July 21, 2012, 18:32 GMT)

Abhishek you have misseed to mentioned the LBW turned down off the Mathews bowling for Raina,it might have done difference in the final score. also i dont think it is fair to say Dilshan coudn't capitalise on drop catch, it was the next over first ball he got LBW, it was good delivery and nothing wrong Dilshan did, because he didnt thru his wiket away. clearly pitch was behaving totlay conrast to how it was when Ind batting, swing & turn were both there, clearly batting second is difficult.anyway India batted well and SL didnt bawled in wel middle of inning, just allowed batsmen to score freely.they score 6-7 run p/ovr thru 2s&3s. and whenSL batting they waited too long, letting RR to go up 8-9, beyond control, Sanga cound't accelerate when required. actualy this is big problm in SL now, if the first wiket goes early then immediately SL goes to defence thru sanga's bating then RR start climbing, i think SL need chnage this approach.SL were attacking team, now gone to defensive aproch

Yet another thrashing for Sri Lanka at the hands of India....First the World Cup final, India easily chasing down 330+ in 36 overs in the CB series, Asia Cup thrashing and now this.

Posted by Harmony111 on (July 21, 2012, 18:09 GMT)

When SL gave India a target of 321, Kohli scored 133 of 86 balls, a SR of 154 and India won in 37 overs with ease. When India gave SL a target of 315, Sangakkara scored 133 of 151 balls, a SR of 88 and SL lost and frankly never looked like winning the match. Kohli has 12 100s in only 86 matches while Sangakkara has 14 in 331. This puts into perspective the huge chasm that exists between Kohli's talent and Sangakkara's talent. How are the SL fans feeling today? They were all so charged up that SL will make mincemeat of India huh? My question to all SL fans is that why should Sangakkara not be called a selfish player for his batting in today's match. The last time he scored a 100 against Indian then too SL had lost.

Posted by Sinhaya on (July 21, 2012, 18:09 GMT)

Kulasekara's injury and missing 5 of his overs proved a costly loss for Sri Lanka. Probably Thisara Perera should have come up the order rather than coming too low down. Thisara's bowling today was too wayward and hope he bowls better on Tuesday. Well done Sanga but 315 seemed too much and we were too slow early on leaving too much to the latter part.

Dhoni.. Like your hitting always but not the decision... Still u support the useless Jadeja... Don't even think inn the dream that Jadeja would be replacement for Yuvi... Comparing to Jadeja Yusuf Pathan is much much better who can hit better and bowl well too.. Don't spoil Indian team just by keep on giving chance to the useless Jadeja.. What is the deal between u and him behind ur continuous support..
