India in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 4th ODI

Sri Lanka v India

India won by 6 wickets (with 46 balls remaining)

2.20pm Alpine Walker: "Rohit and Rahane move, I think is called the discovered check in Chess. It can back fire." For non-chess experts, here's what a discovered check is.

Joe Toran: "Please ask Fletcher/Dhoni ... What about giving Rahul Sharma a decent run with the ball? Why is the long rope reserved for just batsmen?" Good point.

LOL: "Classic Indian compromise. Dhoni wants to keep Rohit but is under pressure to play Tiwary. So he plays both and drops Rahul Sharma. Sad but not surprising."

As usual, Rohit fans are a minority among our readers. Here's one of them. Gokul Sundar: "Kudos to Dhoni for persisting with Rohit Sharma. Reminds me of what he did with Kohli in the Australian series. Might be regarded as a landmark decision down the lane."

Theories getting more and more bizarre. Pramod MJ: "Could it be that Tiwary finally made it to the team on the back of his bowling skills?? Seeing that its a leg-spinner for a leg-spinner swap."

2.05pm Toss Sri Lanka chose to bat. Lahiru Thirimanne comes in for Sanga. Nuwan Pradeep in for Udana.

Mahela still wants runs on the board first, on this flat track, especially with Sanga out.

Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary both playing. Rahul Sharma left out, so the bowling is a bit thin. What is the thinking here? You just successfully chase 287 and decide to strengthen the batting. The five-bowler strategy has been shelved and that means Sehwag, Raina, Rohit and perhaps Tiwary will have to share 10 overs.

Have you read Aakash Chopra's piece on Rohit Sharma and his troubles at the international level?

Ravi: "You can also Kohli to the list. I think each one of them is good enough to bowl 2 overs at least don't you?" Dhoni can chip in too.

Top observation from Raghuveer: "R.Sharma is out, no no.... its Rahul not Rohit."

1.45pm Fifteen minutes away from the toss, fifteen minutes away from finding out the latest installment of the Rohit v Tiwary debate.

Kumar Sangakkara, who has been in terrific form recently, is out of the series injured, and that could lead to a shuffle in the batting order. Should Mahela stay at No. 5, or will he and Chandimal both move one place up in the order.

Make what you will of the update from Abhishek Purohit: "Manoj Tiwary is bowling legspinners on the side pitch, while Rohit Sharma is practising slip catching." Is he India's best slip catcher in the nets?

1.35pm Hello all, game four of Sri Lanka v India coming up. Here's our preview for the game. India haven't lost an ODI bilateral series in Sri Lanka since 1997, and a win today will extend that run.

Our man in Colombo, Abhishek Purohit, takes an in-depth look at Sri Lanka's schedule and the impact it has had on their players. Sri Lanka have already played 17 Tests and 43 ODIs since the World Cup, the highest of any team in each format.

43.6

Tiwary to Thirimanne, 1 run, helped along to long-on for a singe to end the over

Sid: "By bowling the spinners, I think Dhoni is trying to finish his overs within the 3.5 hours and request the ICC to use the saved up time for the next game." India on course to finish well ahead of time, for a change.

End of over 45 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 213/5 (RR: 4.73)

45.1

Tiwary to Mendis, OUT, third for Tiwary! Mendis looked to reverse-sweep, he's bowled by a flighted legbreak, Tiwary can do no wrong here, send him up the order today when India bat, this is his best bowling figures in ODI and domestic one-dayers as well

BMAJ Mendis b Tiwary 17 (14m 16b 2x4 0x6) SR: 106.25

45.2

Tiwary to Perera, 1 wide, spins down the leg side

Not the best timing for this comment, given Tiwary's figures. "If G Boycott would have been a commentator for this series, he would have said following abt Tiwary's bowling " His bowling is just utter rubbish. Even my mother could have hit that". I'd agree with Sameer, Tiwary has hardly looked threatening

45.2

45.6

Tiwary to Perera, OUT, Tiwary's day gets better and better, he's got his fourth now! Perera looks to clobber the ball into orbit, he hits it high but not long enough, Raina gets under it at midwicket, and does well to pouch that one, he had plenty of ground to cover, judges it perfectly

NLTC Perera c Raina b Tiwary 2 (3m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

End of over 46 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 218/7 (RR: 4.73)

46.6

Ashwin to Thirimanne, OUT, bowled 'im, Sri Lanka's implosion continues, Thirimanne charges down the track and looks to force the ball through the off side, the ball went straight on, doesn't spin away, he misses and that crashes into the top of leg stump

HDRL Thirimanne b Ashwin 47 (105m 69b 0x4 0x6) SR: 68.11

End of over 47 (1 run, wicket maiden) Sri Lanka 219/8 (RR: 4.65)
     R Ashwin    10-1-46-2

47.1

Tiwary to Herath, no run, flighted ball is worked to short fine leg

47.2

Tiwary to Herath, no run, could have had a five-for there, that pitched on middle on leg and spun towards off, Herath went for the sweep, misses and is struck on the thigh pad, height was not a problem, but the umpire probably though that was missing off, close call that, looked heading for off

47.3

Tiwary to Herath, 1 run, whacked to midwicket for a single

47.4

Tiwary to Malinga, SIX, Malinga shows how to hit them, clobbers a pitched up ball over midwicket, Mathews and Perera tried but holed out

48.2

Sehwag to Herath, 1 run, worked to extra cover this time

48.3

Sehwag to Malinga, 1 run, overpitched ball, cramping up Malinga who is looking to swing every ball now, squeezed towards the leg side

48.4

Sehwag to Herath, 1 run, full ball is defended to the leg side, Sehwag goes up in appeal for the lbw, Dhoni is quickly after the ball as the batsmen sneak a run, Dhoni's throw is way off target though

48.5

Sehwag to Malinga, 1 run, swiped towards deep square leg for a single

48.6

Sehwag to Herath, 1 run, pitched up and a tailender's slog towards deep midwicket

Just 18 overs of pace in this innings, though India have only one specialist spinner and three specialist quicks

End of over 49 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 233/8 (RR: 4.75)
HMRKB Herath    6* (11b)      V Sehwag    8-1-38-1

Tiwary to finish off the innings

49.1

Tiwary to Herath, no run, Herath again looks to swipe, misses and is struck on the pad, the ball rolls back towards Dhoni

49.2

49.3

Tiwary to Herath, 1 run, in the air again, swept again, the ball lands short of the man in the deep, three more deliveries, can he get a five-for?

49.4

Tiwary to Malinga, SIX, Malinga murders that to the midwicket boundary, he charged out, Tiwary sent it short but that doesn't stop Malinga, who swings it for six

49.5

Tiwary to Malinga, 1 run, down the track and clubbed towards long-on

49.6

Tiwary to Herath, SIX, whoah! that is the shot of the innings, Herath finishes off the innings in style, he's a great tailender to watch, skips down the track and demolishes that one over wide long-on for another six, an expensive final over but that isn't going to wipe the smile off Tiwary's face

Sri Lanka finish on 251. Not sure that is enough against a deep Indian batting line-up? It is a slower track than the one used for Saturday's game, so shot making is a little tougher.

Dhoni's risky strategy of dropping a bowler and bolstering the batting has paid off so far. Manoj Tiwary's first India game in eight months is a success even before he has got a chance to bat. The last time he batted for India, he made his highest List A score, and now he has his best List A figures. He was one of only two bowlers to bowl their full quota.

Sri Lanka made a steady start, and gambled by taking the Batting Powerplay early. Both openers fell soon after, but the innings seemed on track as Chandimal and Thirimanne put on a measured stand. Chandimal holed out to a half-tracker from Tiwary, and after that Sri Lanka couldn't find any momentum, till Herath and Malinga had some fun at the end.

What's more India have finished five minutes ahead of schedule, not a common occurrence.

Aditya Saxena: "3 words - 'Poor Rahul Sharma'" Aayush Agarwal: "Tiwary is now the leading wicket taker for India in this series !!" Aniruddha: "After watching Tiwary's bowling, Rohit Sharma must be more nervous than Sri Lankans."

James: "" His bowling is just utter rubbish. Even my mother could have hit that". Not quite Sameer.

Boycs would actually have said: "It's roobish, is this. Me Granma could 'it that wi' stick o' rhubarb"."

Abhishek Jain: "Did anyone notice that Thirimanne did not score a single boundary in his innings??" I hadn't.

Vinod: "Tiwary's bowling reminds me of a "Great" West Indian legspinner called Rawl Lewis.. Does anyone remember him?" Yes, he makes an appearance in today's Ask Steven column. As does a man making his debut today, Nuwan Pradeep.

Siddhartha Talya is finishing up the innings report, take a look. I'll be back in half an hour or so, around 6.30pm

End of over 50 (18 runs) Sri Lanka 251/8
