Tharindu Kaushal, a 19-year old offspinner, has been named in Sri Lanka's squad for the Tests against New Zealand, while left-arm seamer Chanaka Welegedara returns to the side after missing two Tests against Pakistan due to a shoulder injury.

Kaushal is in Sri Lanka's squad for the ongoing ODIs but is yet to play. He has not played any first-class or List A cricket either but was part of the Under-19 squad for the World cup in Australia. "Kaushal has a lot of potential and we have included him in the squad to allow him to get a feel of being in the presence of senior players and for him to train with them," Sri Lanka's chairman of selectors, Ashantha de Mel, told ESPNcricinfo. "We will see how the other offspinner Suraj Randiv bowls in the first Test and then decide whether we should take a gamble with Kaushal."

Fast bowlers Dhammika Prasad and Shaminda Eranga were also picked in the 15-man squad, displacing Thisara Perera and Nuwan Pradeep. Perera had taken four wickets and made 75 in the only match he played in against Pakistan.

Eranga had been overlooked for the Pakistan series after coming back from a nerve-related back injury earlier in the year, but had found places in Sri Lanka's World Twenty20 and limited-overs squads for the New Zealand series. He played one Test against Australia last year and took five wickets in that match. Dilhara Fernando had replaced Welegadara in the Pakistan series, but was left out.

Swing bowler Nuwan Kulasekara retained his Test spot after a successful series against Pakistan, in which he was Sri Lanka's best fast bowler, with eight wickets at 36.37. The top order was also unchanged, as Tharanga Paranavitana kept Lahiru Thirimanne out of the Test opener's spot.

Sri Lanka also named an unchanged squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs against New Zealand in Hambantota. They lead the series 2-0. "We were hoping to change the squad after the first three ODIs if Sri Lanka had taken a winning lead, but due to the bad weather we had to retain the same squad of 15 players for the remaining two one-dayers," de Mel said. "Winning the series is important, that's why we named the same squad for the remaining two ODIs, but if we win tomorrow we will give an opportunity to the players who have not got a game in the series so far in Monday's match."

De Mel also said that opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, who is suffering from a strained back, would miss the final two ODIs to give himself time to recover for the Test series. Mahela Jayawardene is likely to open in Dilshan's absence, with Dinesh Chandimal batting in the middle order. Chamara Kapugedera has been called in to the squad to replace Dilshan.

The first Test begins in Galle on November 17.

Test squad: Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Angelo Mathews (vc), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Paranavitana, Kumar Sangakkara, Thilan Samaraweera, Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), Tharindu Kaushal, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Kulasekara, Dinesh Chandimal, Chanaka Welagedara, Shaminda Eranga, Dhammika Prasad.

Squad for remaining ODIs: Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Angelo Mathews (vc), Chamara Kapugedera, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera, Jeevan Mendis, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Shaminda Eranga, Upul Tharanga, Rangana Herath, Akila Dananjaya, Tharindu Kaushal.

Tharanga paranavithana is the best test opener in sri lanka now, see domestic seassons last 3 years, he will do some thing in this time

Give a chance to youngsters. series is now won by us. it's time to youngsters have a go. at this will be good test to Mathews too lead the Sri Lankan side for the first time. So my playing XI for tomorrow (1)Tharanga (2)Chandimal (3)Thirimanna (4)Kapugedara (5)Mathews* (6)Jeewan (7)Thisara (8)Kulasekara (9)Eranga (10)Kaushal (11)Dhananjaya I know there is a one batsman short. but we have give a chance to all of them.

Why didnt give a chance to Upul Tharanga???? Paranavithana got too many chances.....

Posted by   on (November 10, 2012, 20:15 GMT)

Tharanga Paranavitana and Chanaka Welagedara have been given too many chances. I do not understand the selection of Tharindu Kaushal and leaving out Lahiru Madushanka the highest wicket taker for sri lanka in the under 19 world cup.

My playing XI

Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dinesh Chandimal, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Thilan Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews (vc), Prasanna Jayawardene (wk) Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Kulasekara, Shaminda Eranga

What I can't understand is that these selectors keep on talking about Dinesh Chandimal's talent and see him as the future Sanga / Mahela, but not giving him any opportunities to play in any formats? Well Tisara Perera not in the squad after taking 4 wickets & 75 runs. What is the selection policy? Only reason I can imagine is that they made this decision based on his current bowling form in ODIs. Nice to see Shaminda Eranga in the squad (at least) who I believe should be our main strike bowler in tests. Selectors have finally forgot Suranga Lakmal :), but when will Paranawithana?

Posted by   on (November 10, 2012, 5:20 GMT)

what about upul tharanga, he has done nothing in 2012, and next world cup will be held in aus and nz, so its almost certain that we gonna need to find an opening batsmen, im pretty sure dilshan, mehala and sanga will play 2015 wc, so mahela must be thinking to be the opener if tharanga fails, but if he wanna be the opener in the wc, why not he start now, drop tharanga, an get youngsters to middle order and put mahela and dilshan at no1,2., right now

Posted by   on (November 10, 2012, 4:19 GMT)

Based on his performance in the last test we played, Thisara Perera may consider himself unlucky not to get picked. But in that match he was struggling with fitness in the second innings. This indicates he has some problems with his stamina in lasting a 5 day test in the sub continent. His previous test appearances had been all away from home. The first choice pace bowlers will be Welagedara and Kulasekara. Shaminda Eranga might get an opportunity if they decide to play an extra paceman at the SSC. The selectors should have made a statement on the condition of Ajantha Mendis. Probably they do not want to risk playing him with the Australian tour coming up next month.

Posted by sl_blood on (November 10, 2012, 3:07 GMT)

to all the guys who think akila dhananjaya should be named , u guys have no idea about the stamina the physical fitness needed to play a test match ..Akila has yet to feature in a set of one day intenationals yet and his physical statue and stamina is clearly not enough to play 5 day cricket...he has a long long way to go..Im not saying bringing in another 19 year old is the solution .But atleast the selectos think that he can cope with the demands of test cricket..Hopefully he can grab the opportunity given.randiv is too overrated as a spinner.

Kapu ??? ph please ! no way !

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 22:49 GMT)

Agree. Welagedara should be given an another chance. Unfortunately SL fast men are not quick enough to trouble international top order batsmen. The three quicks from Australia yesterday did not trouble AMLA and KALLIS in BRISBANE. Kapu is a very lucky man. Who is next? Chamara Silva or Mubarak? I am glad that they are trying to bring new young spinners. This should be our strong point and we must encourage spin bowling. Perhaps a bowling coach from Pakistan would not be a bad idea.GOOD LUCK SL. Love to see you guys at the "G".

Looks like sri lanka is treating this series like a trial as a build up to the australian summer. A tad disrespectful to NZ but i guess putting a string of wins together is the only thing that earns you respect and unfortunately NZ have been stumbling for a long time now

So Kaushal just walks in ahead of Dananjaya? Wow.

Posted by Yasi_Gee on (November 9, 2012, 19:54 GMT)

I don't understand Sri Lankan selectors. Perera was our best test player against Pakisthan test series. I hope they'll give a chance to Chandimal. Good luck Sri Lanka.

Posted by anuradea on (November 9, 2012, 19:46 GMT)

It is difficult to understand how Akila Dhanajaya did not make the test squad as he has flight and all the variations needed for test cricket. He is a bowler who can buy wickets with his flight and turn. When we have a bowler who can bowl, off and leg spin and can have a 2 in one bowler, why opt to play the others. He has already shown what he can do to international batsmen. Paranavithana can put the whole upper middle order under pressure by his inability to score at a reasonable pace. Why not have Dinesh chandimal to open with Dilshan for the tests as he has already shown us what he is capable of. Given the chance he will adopt and get the necessary stats we need. We really need to find some new fast bowling options as what we have now is very up and down and these guys will get pulverized in Australia. Why can't we get Malinga and manage him with short spells so that he will not be taxed too much. De Ma and his team has done a good job so far with what is availabe to them.

Posted by WTEH on (November 9, 2012, 18:05 GMT)

I'm not sure what Kapu has done in the previous life. Must be something really good, when you think about all the opportunities he's getting to be in the side. This must be a world record being the best backdoor pick ever for a national side for any sport.

Posted by Prabhash1985 on (November 9, 2012, 17:11 GMT)

Sri Lanka should better give a chance to another selector instead Asanta. It will be a pressure cooker! Crazy!!! Why Thisara is out? He should be in. What I see is that they do things to create pressure. With pressure, you get nothing. Take Upul Tharanga in. Good that Kapugedara is in. Synthesized pressure cooker cricket!!! Crazy!!!

Posted by UN_Jonty on (November 9, 2012, 16:59 GMT)

for tests... 1.chandimal,2.dilshan,3.sanga,4.mahela,5.thilan,6.mathews,7.prasanna,8.kule,9.herath,10.eranga,11.randiw.... no more paranawithana & welagedara....

Posted by sameeratharanga on (November 9, 2012, 15:49 GMT)

Why dont selector give a chance to Munawwera to open the batting in the absence of Dilshan ? Munaweera is the ideal man to replace Dilly. not kapugedara..

Also Thisara Should be in the Squad.he is better than prasad & welagedara.

Posted by Htc-Android on (November 9, 2012, 15:33 GMT)

This series is utter nonsense. Thirimanne is yet to bat. chandimal, dhananjaya, eranga, kaushal are yet to get a game. and whats the use of picking kapugedera when there are already 4 youngsters sitting on the bench?

Posted by sajhera on (November 9, 2012, 15:23 GMT)

Everybody knows why asantha's favourite Kapu & Mubarak send to Honkong sixes?? kapu Came to ODI squad from the back door again for replace Dilshan. Asantha & selectors select his pet player without selecting an very youung talented informed opening batsman Dimuth karunarathne. .Compare maharoof & kapu??its a shame for sri lankan cricket, very good talented players like chinthaka Jayasinghe quite from SL cricket because of this muffot selectors

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 15:00 GMT)

Ishan Hannan: You seems to have a short memory. It was the top order batting collapse triggered by Chanaka Welagedara which led to our historic test win against South Africa in the Durban test. He was a very consistent performer in tests before he broke down with injury. Please go to cricinfo archives and check the records. I basically agree with the selected test squad knowing very well that some of them in there are unlikely to play unless there is some injury to a regular player. We need to use this series to make preparations for the tough series ahead down under. Afterwards we could try out some youngsters against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. The main concern is Dinesh Chandimal who is in all squads without getting a single game to play. Hope he will replace injured Dilshan in last two ODIs.

Posted by yorkslanka on (November 9, 2012, 14:24 GMT)

how does a player who is uncapped, walk straigh into the squad for the full national team??isnt that what A teams are there for? Also, i dont understand how and why thisara has been dropped..He is a great option for a third seamer and a useful lower order batsman..another silly move by the many other have said, why is ajantha mendis STILL being frozen out, he cant be injured for this long..

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 14:07 GMT)

Tharanga should open the inning with dilshan or Thirimanna and chandimal should play in the middle , And Thisara should play as the all-rounders.. Since malinga dont play test there should be the replacement. Should play 5-2-4 formations.. We will have a grate chance to WIN the series .. Good luck LIONS .. ROAARR \m/

what is this every time they give lots of chances to old players, give young guys more and more chances to get some experience.see munaweera played only 3 matches in last T20 he couldnt continue because of the how can he show his talent, given less matches

Here we go again - every Tom, Dick and Harry and their dog giving advice on team selection. Guys, the selectors know better than you. These are the selectors who have brought SL to the finals of three world cups over the last few years. So, please keep your opinions to yourself.

Posted by PadMarley on (November 9, 2012, 13:20 GMT)

Bowling remains a concern for Sri Lanka... no one near filling gaps created by Vaas and Murali. Herath is the only bowler to rely on... and no support bowler or no one to takeover when he has a bad day ..

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 13:11 GMT)

Kapu ??? ph please ! no way !

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 13:03 GMT)

what a joke..Welagedara,Tharindu kusal and Dhammika prasad???Can some one tell me has Welagedara or prasad ever won a match for Sri lanka or a note worthy contribution ever??? Compare to the T20 and ODI selection this test squad is an absoulute joke..I strongly believe we are playing a hand full of test matches onlt to keep the people happy and the board and senior members not interested at all in test cricket and that's the reason the selectoon commitee is not taking interest in searching for a solid test squad!!!!!!!

Posted by 21tu on (November 9, 2012, 12:05 GMT)

The team srilanka can give more oppertunities to the young players. But its time they say GOOD BYE to the senior players.when its test definitly Tilan is there. But you have to give a chance to the young ones.So its time you make Tilan as the Captain is one of the series and say Good Bye for the wonderfull service done.He is a good middle order dependable batsmen.A batsmen like Mawan/Rahul Dravid. To groom a new player of his caliber you need a spot in middle order. Its high time SL cricket replace one by one in the batting order since we have new commers like Mandis,Akila,Tharidu to take the spot of Murali. Also you need time to find a replacement for Sanga and Mahela cos in one or two years time they will not paly international cricket.

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 11:07 GMT)

Paranawithana is not good enough at this level..he should be replaced by Dimuth..Samaraweera and Mahela should have taken a rest and includethirimanne and chandi at no 4 and 5..but these money eaters in SLC do nothing other than cancelling tests and destroying the country`s cricket.

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 11:06 GMT)

What is going on with the non-selection of Ajantha Mendis? Is he still injured or has he been over-looked for the one dayers and Test matches? Where is the reporting on this? If he misses out on selection for the Australian tour, the selectors will be bananas. He is the most feared bowler by Australia and many others. What other bowler can capture 6 for 16 against them?

Posted by ooper_cut on (November 9, 2012, 10:54 GMT)

Seems like a Test cap is very easy to get in SL.

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 10:42 GMT)

Thirimanne should be in for Para

Posted by stormy16 on (November 9, 2012, 10:30 GMT)

I am all for youngsters but what happned to Dananjaya? Surely he should be the obvious choice. Also what happened to Perera? He offered alot in the last test V Pak with runs and wickets and they drop him - that makes no sense to me at all. SL have been searching for a player of Perera's calibure for along time and when he delivers something - he is dropped. Prasad is now a tried, tested and failed talent and I would much rather have Perera ahead of Prasad. Eranga is a welcome selection as is the ommission of Fernando! Also wondering when guys like Samaraweera and Paranawithara last play any form of cricket?

Posted by chapathishot on (November 9, 2012, 10:20 GMT)

This proves that the resources are really weak in Srilanka and they are trying to find out the next murali by giving chances to the youngsters and ruining them also. The same thing happened in India after Kapils retirement and many good bowlers were lost because they were given premature calls to the team

Posted by Sanga2014 on (November 9, 2012, 10:14 GMT)

I thought Munaweera will get chance over Tharanga and Kapu will come back to side. But it was just a hope

Posted by Udendra on (November 9, 2012, 10:13 GMT)

drop the useless Dammika prasad and bring in Thisara perera.

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 10:04 GMT)

these who dont know about tharidu the under 10 Asian cup held in earlier this year he is the leading wicket tacker in the tournament.he is also a old rounder and he got the ability to use fast off spins and dosras without a problem.

Posted by buncers on (November 9, 2012, 9:42 GMT)

Crazy stupid muppets!

Eranga should be given a run. Wela is just not world class.

How could you NOT put Perera in the squad. He is a very capable all rounder and should take up the 3rd seamer spot. We all know that Angelo can't or won't bowl much in Tests.

Also Perera needs more batting exposure in the longer form to refine his skills.

Posted by anver777 on (November 9, 2012, 9:21 GMT)

Unseen & with no 1st class experiences at all, Tharindu Kaushal's inclusion for tests is a big gamble by De Mel & co.... I wonder this is not Mahela's discovery !!! anyway my good wishes to this young offie !!!!

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 9:13 GMT)

How come dananjaya isnt in the test squad and they chose this new guy?

Posted by vj_gooner on (November 9, 2012, 9:12 GMT)

No List A or First-class appearances?

This looks like a good logic! Pick an unknown spinner for every series, by the time the team starts reading him the series will get over!

Posted by DilumSL on (November 9, 2012, 9:09 GMT)

test squad is ok. but i feel thare are some better bowlers than chanaka and prasad. and paranavitana also a big concern he better do something in this sereis. But what is the change in the ODI squad for the last two games. They should have include some new players coz we have already won 2 games. otherwise we will be in a huge trouble when Sanga, Mahela and dilly retires.

Posted by anver777 on (November 9, 2012, 9:07 GMT)

Thank God Dilhara is not there for this series !!! welcome back Chanaka, but Thisara is a better choice than Prasad, specially after his allround skills against Pak. Dropping him after taking 4wkts & scoring 75runs is a very strange decision by SL selectors. If this effort is not sufficient then, what more you can expect from a low order allrounder ????

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 8:59 GMT)

I wish South Africa would be like Sub-continent cricketing countries where unknown promising youngsters are given opportunities at the highest level right away. In SA it's highly unlikey that a 16 year would make his international debut as was case with Sachin Tendulkar. 25 year olds are considered youngsters here while in Asian countries such players are veterans of international cricket.

Posted by denwarlo70 on (November 9, 2012, 8:53 GMT)

Hmmm, what can I say? Well, no. I won't say anything because they (Selectors) know what is best. But then again on the other hand, is this the best they could do? Fingers crossed, probably because Vaas is some adviser or something to team NZ, the selectors may have turned to lesser known faces, who knows....

Posted by rajithwijepura on (November 9, 2012, 8:48 GMT)

Para is failing consecutively in past 5-6 test matches. I think some young talent like Dimuth Karunarathne or Some experience like Upul Tharanga should be given chance. I prefer Dimuth. Coz we need someone for back Dilshan when he retire from Test cricket.

Randiv is a one day specialist , dont know why selectors keep on putting him in the Test squad

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 8:32 GMT)

Can de Mel justify the inclusion of Dhammika Prasad and Tharanga Paranavithana? I'm not sure about Tharindu Kaushal?

my XI - Dilshan / Chandimal / Sangakkara / Mahela / Samaraweera / mathews / Prasanna / Welagedara / Shaminda / Randiv / Herath.....Angelo to be the third seamer and expecting few offies from Dilshan. Openning with Chandimal can be a risk but i'd take it.

Posted by Test-is-the-best on (November 9, 2012, 8:29 GMT)

This Selection committee too has got a history of making poor decisions. One of them is about the openers spot. Paranavithana has got a ordinary after 30 test matches , 2 centuries, 33.09 run per inning. Whats wrong with Dimuth Karunarathna after a very good tour in South Africa recently?. He could have won the spot since he would be good investment in the forthcoming Australian tour. Suraj Randiv too have an average career as a test bowler. The chance should have been given to Sachithra Senanayake instead . Omission of Thisara Perera is debateful. However he could been overlooked to keep 4 specialist fast bowlers.

Posted by CricketPissek on (November 9, 2012, 8:24 GMT)

the selectors seem to either choose proven failures or complete unknowns instead of giving opportunity to hard working players who have been getting runs and wickets consistently in the A team or domestic league. the only solace is that Chamara Silva wasn't picked :)

Posted by Vivek.Bhandari on (November 9, 2012, 8:22 GMT)

They may have some logic in removing Thisara from the team after such a decent performance in his last match; but still that logic is worth nothing and would also shatter his morale more than anything else. But good to see another young spinner making the ranks in Sri Lanka. We Indians would love to have a couple of Sri Lankan spinners and a couple of Pakistani fast bowlers.

Posted by   on (November 9, 2012, 8:19 GMT)

These selectors and SLC officials are generally taking idiotic decisions, the worst being the postponement / indirect cancellation of test matches. Ashantha de Mel is known for goofing up and he is living up to his reputation. However, Tharindu Kaushal may be a player with some outstanding skills, justifying his inclusion even in tests. When Akila Dhananjaya was picked there was so much criticism, saying he had not even been picked to the U19 side but now everyone knows that selection, in hind sight, was very much justified.

Posted by Greg-Willson on (November 9, 2012, 8:13 GMT)

Could be a masterstroke like Daniel Vettori being picked with no first class experience

Posted by sujanm on (November 9, 2012, 7:50 GMT)

This is a Pathetic Selection. After the strong performance in Sri Lanka A tour to South Africa I was expecting Dimuth Karunarathna would challenge Paranavitana for the openers slot. And after a strong performance in the last Test played Perera gets dropped where as Prasad one of the most inconsistent bowlers get selected. And how can you justify the inclusion of Tharindu Kaushal who haven't played a single 1st class or List A game. May be he is talented but to play test cricket you have to prove your self in the 1st class arena. Feel Jeewan Mendis should get a chance in the test level as well. Everyone in Sri Lankan cricket is dragging the sport behind rather than lifting its standard. Even the most loyal supporters are loosing their spirit.

Posted by sonu77 on (November 9, 2012, 7:48 GMT)

75 runs & 4 wickets in his last game, but still no place for country's next test. Mr. De mel, you beauty !

Posted by Perera32 on (November 9, 2012, 7:42 GMT)

Displacing Thisara Perera is the right choice because his bowling will be ineffective in Galle and SSC. We need Thisara to be fully fit for the Australia series too. However the inclusion of Dhammika Prasad is pathetic because his batting is better than his bowling, SLC should've picked Akila Dananjaya for the test series.
