New Zealand in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 2nd ODI

Sri Lanka v New Zealand

Sri Lanka won by 14 runs (D/L method)

2.20: Kiwi Andrew isn't sounding optimistic: "The team looked weak enough without Guptill (and to an extent Bracewell), and now with no BMac in...weak, weak, weak." Guptill will be here for the Tests.

Anushan: "Sri Lankan selectors and the captain always talk big about introducing new faces and giving chance to youngsters. This series is a perfect platform to try out some new players. But can't see that happening. They should have at least played Eranga, who is supposed to be Sri Lanka's next pace spearhead."

Andrew Fernando yesterday did a lowdown on the weather in Sri Lanka at this time of the year and the flawed scheduling.

Toss, 2pm: New Zealand have won the toss and they will bat first. SL have left out Chandimal, Dananjaya, Eranga and Tharindu Kaushal.

New Zealand have left out Brendon McCullum because of a stiff lower back. BJ Watling will keep wicket. The others left out are Jacob Oram Ronnie Hira, and Adam Milne.

The teams will be updated shortly above. Sri Lanka have gone with a balanced attack with three allrounders in Mathews, Perera and Jeevan Mendis.

1.45pm: We'll begin with the good news. The sun is shining at Pallekele. After all the rain we've seen and grown to love and hate, this is a welcome change. Looks like we will have a prompt start.

This will come as a big relief to some of the younger players from the NZ squad especially, looking to impress ahead of the South Africa tour.

Marcus: "It was interesting to note your earlier comment about the pace of the game. I must admit, I have actually enjoyed the more attritional and tactical nature of one day cricket of late, especially with the introduction of two balls. I like being able to enjoy the nuance of test cricket in a shorter format, with the added bonus of a guaranteed result, rather than ODIs just feeling like over sized T20s with under sized run rates. I personally think the format has found a happy medium, and long may it continue."

49.3

Malinga to Ellis, no run, Ellis stands outside leg and tries to wham that over the on side, well disguised slower ball and the ball just sneaks past the off stump, swing and a miss

49.4

Malinga to Ellis, 2 runs, slower ball and he times the chip really well and the ball clears midwicket, the sweeper cuts it off

49.6

6.15: 250 may not look massive but it certainly looks competitive. New Zealand didn't begin strongly and it was hard work out there for Watling. The aim was to preserve wickets and accelerate towards the end .It allowed Taylor to open up and after a quiet Powerplay NZ picked up the pace. Franklin wasn't as aggressive as he should have been. Sri Lanka will be tested against Trent Boult early. Should be an interesting chase since this is the first proper game we've had on this tour. We don't know yet how the wicket behaves later in the evening. Join us at 6.45.
