New Zealand in Sri Lanka Test Series - 1st Test

Sri Lanka v New Zealand

Sri Lanka won by 10 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

Mike digs up the school archives: "Dimuth, Angie and Thisara all played together in 2 big matches against St.Peters I think. In one of those games Dimuth and Thisara had a partnership of about 170 within 25 overs. Dimuth scored a century while Thisara made a quick fire 90. This was done after the team had lost about 4 or 5 wickets for about 150."

Pitch: Hard pitch, dead grass and will turn from day three. The rain hasn't affected the pitch preparation.

Thilan Samaraweera was just talking to Russell Arnold and when asked about the reduction in Tests for the following year, this is what he said: "Very disappointing. I'm not a big fan of two-Test series. I prefer three or four, but this is not in my control." You have to feel sorry for guys like Samaraweera and Paranavitana, when you know your next Test is a painful wait.

Carvalho: "If he was to survive the morning blist rather than the evening storm why don't we call him the morning watchman."

Toss, 9.30: New Zealand have won the toss and they will bat first. Dimuth Karunaratne will make his debut as an opener. Shaminda Eranga is preferred over Chanaka Welegedara. Karunaratne is from St Joseph's College, Colombo, which has also produced Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera. So a big moment for everyone at Darley Road.

The teams are being updated above. Kula, Eranga and Mathews are the three seamers for SL. Herath and Randiv the spinners.

For New Zealand, Bracewell joins Boult and Southee as the three seamers. Patel is the spinner. No major surprises or debuts for the visitors. However, there's no place for Chris Martin.

9.15am: Good morning everyone and welcome to the coverage of the 1st Test in Galle. "It's looking beautiful with blue sky and the sun shining," tweets Roshan Abeysinghe. So that's some good news to get things going. However, expect some rain in the afternoon, they say. That's been the pattern in the lead-up.

The confirmed news from yesterday is that Dimuth Karunaratne will make his debut as an opener. He was just handed his Test cap by Charith Senanayake, the SL team manager and a left-handed opener himself.

Kris: "NZ should've debuted Todd Astle as well as using Patel. Franklin might be a better batsman but is pretty average as a 4th seamer which is what he will also be used as. And really why even bother have Martin in the squad if you aren't using him especially as Boult is also in the squad...He's been a good servant to NZ but his time is up."

Rob disagrees with Kris: "I disagree, yes an extra spinner would have been handy, but Franklin's batting talents are too vital for us to leave out, our batting line up is too brittle for us to have someone like Astle in instead of Franklin, who is known to save us in collapses (which are frequent)."

McCullum has done well to let his guard down and Flynn has been putting away the bad balls as and when. Join us at 12.40.
