Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir has been retained for the ODIs in Sri Lanka and will replace the injured opening batsman Nasir Jamshed in the squad. Tanvir impressed in the two Twenty20s in Hambantota, bowling economically and taking four wickets. He also picked up the Man-of-the-Series award.

On the request of team management, chief selector Iqbal Qasim in consultation with the National Selection Committee has recommended the inclusion of Tanvir in the ODI Squad for the series. The chairman of the PCB has approved the replacement.

"In view of the request from the team management and keeping in consideration the current form of Sohail Tanvir, the selection committee has decided that he may be retained for the ODIs in Sri Lanka." Qasim said.

Jamshed, who was originally named in the ODI and T20 squads, was ruled out before the team left for Sri Lanka due to a fractured left index finger. The PCB hadn't named a replacement back then.

Tanvir, who was named only in the Twenty20 squad for the current tour, last represented Pakistan in ODIs during the tour of Bangladesh in December 2011 where he played two matches but failed to pick up a wicket. He will miss at least the first two matches of this season's Friends Life t20 after signing up with English county Worcestershire.

The five-match ODI series starts on June 7 in Pallekele.

Nasir jamshed with imran nazir will be best partnership.

@prasadGunawardane-totally agree with u !! tanvir is a dangerous bowler in swinging conditions, especially when the batsmen r eager on hitting...his batting skill also earned him a spot in odi, although his feilding is terrible...otherwise tanvir n sami r not a threat to any oppositon...apologies to all sami fans but i think sami n naveedulhassan r the two bowlers who have everything-speed,style,rhythm,action,aura-but they just loose that something special when they play for the national team....as for fawwad alam's supporters-no comments :D

ITS SEEM TO BE GOOD BCZ OUR OPENNING WILL BE BETTER

what about our Mohammaed Aaamer

Posted by Z.Saleem on (June 6, 2012, 7:37 GMT)

Bowling attack looks good now, Sohail T, Sami, Afridi, Ajmal and Hafeez. Now the question is will they play Gul? and I think they should to keep the balance right!

Posted by pkcricfan101 on (June 6, 2012, 3:14 GMT)

Glad to see sohail tanvir is back in good bowling form, he will be useful with the bat in a brittle lower order as well. A very pressing matter is Umar Gul's inconsistency it seems like he loses his rhythm and only comes back in form near the end of what ever series he is playing. Pakistan should really try out the new comer Rahat Ali in Gul's place. Pakistan needs to bring up their pace bowling back to the standard it used to be because spinners are not going to win them matches in next years tour of south africa!

Posted by Iddy on (June 5, 2012, 17:46 GMT)

Someone out there, please bring Imran Nazir to the odi and the t20 team and play Hamad Azam aswell. These 2 players are perfect for our team. Also please get Nasir Jamshid fit and ready ASAP.

mohammed sami umar gul and sohail tanvir!!!

Posted by PrasadGunawardane on (June 5, 2012, 13:54 GMT)

Well, as per my view Tanvir won't be that awkward for Sri Lankans in coming ODI series as he was in T20s. Reason would be, batsmen do not need to be hurry like T20s and Tanvir become less dangerous in the waiting game. However in Pakistani perspective, selection of Tanvir would be really fruitful with his swinging ability as Sri Lankan conditions are completely different to what you can see from other sub-continent nations. Particularly at night games. When it comes to Sami, he does not seem to be that dangerous even though he managed to trouble the Lankan lower order in that difficult chase with that conditions. Whoever the seamers are introduced to the Pakistani team, the main role will have to be played by the two main spinners in coming D/N ODIs.. That's for sure..

Posted by khurramsch on (June 5, 2012, 12:43 GMT)

Pakistan seriously need a batting medium pace allrounder if there is no razak or hammad then find some 1 else. sohail may be good bowler to fit in as 3rd seamer but serioulsy batting is not that much.

Posted by Asif_Iqbal on (June 5, 2012, 11:54 GMT)

Muhammad Sami would be better choice

Posted by putki on (June 5, 2012, 11:45 GMT)

I still think yasir arafat should be in the odi team.that will make balance of the team.Apart from afridi and Umar Akmal i don't see any big hitter in the squad.so if they have to chase over 260 plus run they will be in trouble.

Posted by   on (June 5, 2012, 10:57 GMT)

We need to see the current form of a plyer and not the stats. So Sami and Tanver should have to be retained in the side. Also Ahmed Shahzad is a good player but unfortunately can not do much when losing wickets from the other end. so he should be in the ODI team also. Best of Luck Pak Team.

Posted by   on (June 5, 2012, 10:56 GMT)

Its good to see players who we thought have passed their prime, making a comeback and hopefully a sustained impact, for example Mohammad Sami and Sohail Tanvir.

Posted by   on (June 5, 2012, 9:30 GMT)

what about shahzaib hasan???he is a very good batsman....he is a natural striker....

Posted by   on (June 5, 2012, 9:20 GMT)

yes very good sign sohail Tanvir include the ODI against srilanka Sohail Tanvir very good Form T20's and I think good Decision and more Strength bowling department

Posted by AmjadZork on (June 5, 2012, 8:30 GMT)

My T-20 World Cup team would be Hafeez, Imran Nazir, Umar Akmal, Shoaib malik, Asad Shafiq, Afridi, Hammad Azam, Shakeel Ansar(wk), Sohail Tanvir, Ajmal, Sami...

Posted by   on (June 5, 2012, 7:52 GMT)

whats wrong with Fawad Alam he is a excellent player but doesn't use properly in the team he is the man who played his first test match and scored 168 runs against srilanka in srilanka.....and in odi's sending him in 6 position at bating which is very unfair he should be bat at no. 4 and MR ZULFI says he was perform only in pakistani pitches just go and look at his record mr. zulfi he is perfoming in australia and england where our senior batsmens are failed. I think he is a very usefull player good middle order batsmen (not lower order), part time bowler and excellent feilder as well.

Posted by   on (June 5, 2012, 6:44 GMT)

fawad alam is only for test games....however sami should be remain in the team bcoz he is a good pace bowler just notice his speed....his speed moslty over 145......and trust me it's really easy to play pace bowler but sami was doing gr8 out there.......

Posted by   on (June 5, 2012, 5:52 GMT)

lol @ all fawad alam supporters ...

@ all guys against sami : He is a changed bowler altogether now ... don't make assessment on his stats ...

1) he performed in domestic 2) only genuine pace available 3) He looks so passionate about his game

Leave him alone for the time beign

Posted by zulfi43 on (June 5, 2012, 5:40 GMT)

All fwad alam lovers watch fwad alam,s video in england last time how was he falling down when play sweep short , he can perform good only in Pakistani pitches

Posted by CricketinChina on (June 5, 2012, 5:40 GMT)

Ahmed Shahzad and Imran Farhat, both are same caliber batsmen. They don't have foot work and time the bowl badly. They should be remove from the team. In the 1st T20 against SriLanka, Ahmed Shahzad played selfishly without considering what the team required from him, he was making his place in the team. He missed a lot of balls because of which the whole team came into pressure and the required run rate increased. In T20, Imran Nazir and Owais Zia should open the inning. We can still try Abdul Razzak in onedays.

My 15 for T20 world cup:-

Mohammed Hafeez Abdul Razzaq Saeed Ajmal Abdul Rehman Imran Nazir Fawad Alam Shahid Afridi Umar Gul Hammad Azam Azhar Mahmood Ahmed Shehzad Rahat Ali Junaid Khan Sohail Tanvir/Aizaz Cheema/Wahab Riaz

Posted by Desihungama on (June 4, 2012, 20:46 GMT)

@Malik Muhammad Umer - I think Fawad Alam can really be an asset. If PCB wants to discard someone, they usually put the person in a format he simply does not excel. That's what they did to Fawad. He is not really a Twenty20 players, basically a Test and can play ODI too. But PCB mostly gave him chances in 20/20 and based on that mediocre performance, thus he was discarded.

Posted by DaDaL0G on (June 4, 2012, 20:13 GMT)

I guess Tanvir is Better Option Along with Muhammad Sami as replacement of Umar Gul in Bowling Department because there no use of Gul he was master of tail enders but if we see his performance in some previous matches tail enders out classed him and he turn out to be a very expensive asset of Pakistan bowling, But well see how they perform together.

Posted by Stark62 on (June 4, 2012, 19:31 GMT)

How may opportunities will this loser be given?

The ODI squad looks absolutely horrible with only THREE youngsters!!

I guess this is a very nice way to prepare for the next WC with soooo many 25+ year olds in the team and only one young fast bowler has been included but there are many talented, young batsmen and bowlers available.

Haven't the selectors heard of: Shezhad, N. Yasin, Fawad (ODI's and Tests only), H. Sohail, Salahuddin, SADAF, Talha, Bhatti and N. Abbas.

I've already mentioned 9 young players with a very good FC average, off the top of my head.

KING OF AY-PEE-ELL RETURNS!

Posted by Desihungama on (June 4, 2012, 19:07 GMT)

I agree with this decision as you should only retain people who currently in form and not trying to find form during a game. I didn't think I would say that but Pak badly needs Kamran Akmal and Imran Nazir for their twenty20 campaign. Discard Umar Akmal, have Kamran keep and either get Awais Zia in or another hard hitter.

Posted by   on (June 4, 2012, 17:09 GMT)

@ sayed haider raza ....... Such a shame what people are expecting from SAMI .... Look at his test AVERAGE and maybe u will feel what u r saying ... His average is 52 in the test... And if some one look at yasir arafat stats in domestic why they don't play him ??? He is much much better alrounder at the moment 5 centuries and 34 fifties ... And this is good move for sohail tanvir ...as I played with him also he is such a nice alrounder and good hitter ... Many people maybe don't know his hitting skills ...but I know as I played with sohail tanvir in tenes ball cricket ...he is a nice player ...

Posted by   on (June 4, 2012, 15:41 GMT)

fawad alam has the talent to be Pakistan's most valuable batsman if they use him probably. He can be used in all three formats, especially tests and odis. He did not get enough test experience even though he did score a century.

Posted by Nadeem1976 on (June 4, 2012, 15:41 GMT)

Finally the selectors are thinking in a better way. Thanks selectors for retaining man of the series player for ODI.

Congrats Tanvir.... :) Real Jackpot for you.... Good Decision by PCB

NO ahmed shAhzAD nO Fun:(

Posted by Sinhaya on (June 4, 2012, 15:17 GMT)

Whatever Pakistan's batting flaws are, they simply proved their credentials by being able to be named as the team that last beat England in a test match in England. Ever since that August day in 2010, England has been a fortress for England in tests.

Hats off to Inzy..... In the country known for chopping and changing, he respectfully played and captained and retired and more importantly, stayed retired

Imran nazir ..with Ahmad Shehzad ..It can be great opening Partnership..

Posted by   on (June 4, 2012, 14:21 GMT)

Yes Wahab Riaz 's talent is being wasted so is too much experimenting. We need Hamad, Ahmad Shazad in both odi and t20 teams with umar, malik and Afridi they can win you matches with Asad Shafiq and Sarfaraz in the mix you can have a very solid limited over team. Also Khalid and Haris never got a chance to show their talent. Sami am happy about that finally he is the almost best pace bowler in the curent Pakistan squad when clicking he can be unplayable. Tanvir hater should rest. He has proven to be match winner u can't argue with success. He had a lot to prove, his fitness and mental toughness and he was on a song. Lankans couldn't play him and he was same in t20 world cup win.

Posted by   on (June 4, 2012, 14:06 GMT)

his good performance in both the t20's has earned him a place in the one day side. wishing him luck.

Posted by avmd on (June 4, 2012, 14:04 GMT)

Sohail got lucky and the decision doesn't make any sense. No performance over the years and seven good overs and some luck made him leap frogging overs many who have been performing well in domestic circuit. I agree, some batsman should have replaced Jamshed. With this move, now we have no choice left other than Farhat to open ??

Good move by Pakistani Selector!

Great decision he should be in test team too to swing more the red bowl

Posted by   on (June 4, 2012, 12:44 GMT)

Such a shame , how people keep on blaming and cursing SAMI after his super performance in last 2 matches, people still dont understand we needed Pacer right after the retirement of shoaib akhtar and SAMI is the one quickest in the bench and he is in his super form , his performance in domestic as well as in BPL was superb. so instead of looking at where he is from people should look at his performance and he is good in slapiping on the face of his critics.

Posted by Muttee on (June 4, 2012, 12:32 GMT)

Tanvir played well and it sure indeed is a jackpot for him to get selected given we have so many other options. But main point which works for him is his bowling action, which confused the batsmen so much that they just couldn't score off of him on the slow pitches of Hambantota. A little bit of unorthodox-ness (I doubt that is a word) always helps. Plus in Sami's issue, the only point that I give in his favour is that he still has the pace and current bowling lineup of pakistan, we could actually use a real paceman. When he is bowling on target then he is almost unplayable. that is what we saw in the second match. So let's give him a few more chances, who knows, our bowling might again get strong on the pace front which we have been lacking of late. Good luck to Pakistan for the ODI's. It is just the matter of selecting the right team (which apparently is the hardest thing to do for our selectors) and all will be good InshAllah.

Good decision and why Imran Farhat in ODIs and Tests :@

Posted by   on (June 4, 2012, 11:35 GMT)

why ahmed shezad not replace pcb replace tanvir very poor desision.

Posted by   on (June 4, 2012, 11:13 GMT)

I dont understand why they dont select Fawad Alam. He is not a hitter but its very difficult to get him out. He can play a role like Hussey and Bevan. His average is more then 45 and 50 in domestic one day and test.

Posted by Sinhaya on (June 4, 2012, 11:12 GMT)

Tanveer is the best Pakistani fast bowler cos he can bat too. He should play the 3 tests as well. Surprised why he is not used for tests when he can bolster the Pakistani tail which is really weak!

Posted by ThePakKiwi on (June 4, 2012, 10:38 GMT)

It's so funny how Pakistan's suddenly feeling like it's unstable without Misbah. Yet people still believe that he is not good for the team, "yeah like anybody else could create harmony in the team so that they could whitewash ENGLAND!!!!" Has every body forgotten that??? I haven't and never will!!!

Posted by Stark62 on (June 4, 2012, 10:34 GMT)

What about Sadaf Hussain, Mohammad Talha or even Bhatti?

They are far superior to him and younger but I really hope to see Rahat get a chance ahead of anyone in the line up, plus Sami and Tanvir are just not good enough for ODI's but Tanvir should only be kept for T20's and Sami removed permanently for Talha.

Posted by MAK123 on (June 4, 2012, 10:24 GMT)

While poor Wahab Riaz is busy playing third-rated tournament at Rashid Latif Cricket Academy in Karachi, an extremely ordinary bowler in Sohail Tanveer has hit a jackpot. These PCB guys are beyond us. When will they stop insulting our intelligence.

Posted by Afaq_Pervaiz on (June 4, 2012, 10:10 GMT)

Well Ahmed shahzad should also be retained becz we dont want Imran farhat to play in starting 11.

Posted by   on (June 4, 2012, 10:06 GMT)

Tanvir will show him that he is best.....

Posted by Alikhan.dxb on (June 4, 2012, 9:59 GMT)

I dont understand PCB and the team managment .......... how come they always replace bowler with batsman or batsman with bowler. Jamshed should be replace with batsman not bowler..........

Posted by msq3761 on (June 4, 2012, 9:57 GMT)

PCB, please stop your insanity and bring back Shoaib Malik and Abdul Razzaq in the ODI squad. If a player like Abdul Razzaq was in any other team of the world, he would never have been dropped. It's just heart-breaking to see that we play with our B-Team when we can easily play with our A-Team. Just look how Wahab Riaz is treated. Just sad...

Posted by ExplicitPlatinum on (June 4, 2012, 9:57 GMT)

No! Ahmed Shehzad should have been selected for ALL formats of the game. He is a fantastic talent alongside Umar Akmal.

Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (June 4, 2012, 9:55 GMT)

Hammad azam is better choice but his bowling speed is too less.. if he can improve his speed then he could be a regular team memeber.. but trust me tanvir is very ordinary. Nasir jamshed is being very unlucky. He could have cement his palce as a regular opener and among new guys he seems to be best choice with hafeez. i think they should have given a chance to Ahamad shahzad as replacement in odi,s.

Posted by   on (June 4, 2012, 9:29 GMT)

Tanvir will be a real danger for the Srilankans to handle!!!!!!!!!
