Series/Tournaments: Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka

Pakistan's chief selector Iqbal Qasim has said the panel will discuss Younis Khan's ODI future with him after the completion of the ongoing tour of Sri Lanka. Younis was left out of the fifth one-dayer, which Pakistan lost to concede the series 3-1, after making only 10 runs in three innings in Sri Lanka.

Younis, 34, was dismissed for 5, 4 and 1 in the ODIs, falling to Thisara Perera twice and Nuwan Kulasekara once. He was part of the dramatic collapse that cost Pakistan the fourth match in Colombo, where they lost seven wickets for 13 runs. Younis had made only 67 runs in four innings during Pakistan's previous one-day assignment, the Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

"It's the duty of the senior cricketers to lead the team, to carry the team and to drive it forward, but if one of your senior players is struggling then that puts pressure on the team," Qasim told Pakpassion.net. "Let the tour of Sri Lanka finish and then we will definitely discuss his future plans with him [Younis]. Younis has of course already requested not to be selected in T20s, I don't know what he has in mind regarding 50-over cricket.

"I'm sure we will have an amicable chat about his future, as Pakistan needs him for Test cricket for the future. Experience is an invaluable commodity in cricket but you have to be out in the middle performing, which unfortunately Younis has not been doing in 50-over cricket of late."

Apart from Azhar Ali, who scored 217 at an average of 54, Pakistan's batsmen struggled to post imposing totals in Sri Lanka. Qasim said their all-round performance had also been "below par".

"It's difficult to put Sri Lanka under pressure in their conditions and the variable weather conditions did not make things easy for Pakistan either," he said. "However we should not make excuses, the overall performance of the team was below par."

Qasim said the team lacked consistency in all disciplines, their performances veering from exceptional one day to ordinary the next. In the final ODI, Pakistan were shoddy in the field, with several dropped catches and missed run-out opportunities allowing Sri Lanka to win in the last over. "This inconsistency has been hurting Pakistan cricket for many years and it's about time it was eradicated," he said. "One day the fielding is outstanding, the next game it's very poor and the boys are dropping simple catches. The same with the batting, one day it clicks, the next day it misfires.

"Mohammad Sami is an example of this inconsistency, one day he bowls very well and helps the team to victory, the next day he bowls poorly and costs the team the game. It doesn't matter what your game plan is going into the game - it's very difficult to impose that game plan onto the opposition if you are inconsistent."

Despite the defeat in Sri Lanka, Qasim said the selectors would avoid making major changes for the series against Australia in August and the World Twenty20 in September. "You cannot chop and change ahead of a World Cup. There is no point selecting a player for a couple of games and then discarding him," he said. "I think it's too late to experiment now ahead of the T20 World Cup and I would expect that most of the personnel in the T20 squad in Sri Lanka recently will be retained."

"I don't think we should panic in this format and make major adjustments to the T20 squad. I think that slowly and gradually our philosophy in both the 50-over format and the twenty over format will bear fruit, but everyone has to be patient."

Younus was never a good ODI player. Specially under stress he can't perfrom. Just look at his record of last two world cups. Its shameful. We must give chance to new players.

Posted by   on (June 22, 2012, 6:30 GMT)

In my opinion he should be given chance, because he is most experienced team member. As far as his performance is concerned.... every player remain out of form for some time....

Hammad Azam 8.) Kamran Akmal (Unfortunately due to batting) 9.) Umar Gul 10.) Saeed Ajmal 11.) Junaid Khan

Younis Khan was never a great ODI player. Neither is Misbah (poor strike rate), but he stays for now.

My PAK ODI XI: Hafeez, Jamshed, Azhar, U Akmal, Misbah (C), K Akmal (wk), Shafiq, Afridi, Ajmal, Gul, Sami/Tanvir

When there are so many players in the fringes why not try a few others? Nothing against Younus Khan, but surely there has to be a process, a system, or is the board going to persist with players until they loose all form, put themselves and the team under pressure, and then depart in humiliation? There is no reason to "kick them off" as Sonu Ilyas rashly suggests. These players are not criminals, certainly not Younus Khan that they need to be kicked. They must be allowed to depart in dignity. Having said that, I think in the case of Younus Khan I think he is still useful in the tests. I can't see many PAK batsmen with the ability to stay long at the crease to be honest.

Its too early to decide his ODI Future,I think he should decide himself whether he can fulfill demands of ODI or not,Our players must react like Aussie and English players,if u can't play just go by yourself instead of being forced by the Board !

Team pakistan will not changed watever u do..they need to detect their killing problem which is top sceret for themselve too. as their oposition teams understand wat their prob is but untill they could,nt even after high profile coaches {need to change mind set} and when select a player for its profession use it only.......this way.......

I agree with Zahidsaltan that either make Afridi captain or retain Misbah as captain for WCT20....... Hafiz is pathetic.......

He is a warrior for pakistan, the last legend of pakistani cricket,Do not waste him i know he will come back and he will ,pls let him play for pakistan ,we do not have any big potential after him.

Posted by khurramsch on (June 21, 2012, 6:48 GMT)

yes i think its time for younas to focus on test only. azhar and asad have done good & may take his place at no 3. for odi's i think best combination: misbah, hafez, ajmal, Afridi ( if he doesnt retire) + Batting keeper( bring kamran if no other can bat ) + batting medium pace allrounder to balance batting & 3rd seamer role ( hammad/razak or any 1 ) + 2 seamers from gul/junaid/sami/sohail/chema & finally 3 batsman opner or middle order from azhar/asad/umar/nasir/ahmed/

Why players dont decide themselves that they are not performing well n should give chances to young blood... thanxx you younis khan, u have served pakistant but plxxx give otherz vacancies....

It is the time to bid bye to Younis Khan and other senior players, who lacks consistency. I hope, the PCB has realized its responsibility, but, very late.

Please bring yousaf, younis should retire now, its over for him. bring Imran nazir he is good fielder as well..................

Dropping him from ODI doesn't make sense. Let him play for two more series, He might come back. Deciding his ODI future just because of his bad show at last four matches doesn't make sense.

Posted by naeemhussain on (June 21, 2012, 4:58 GMT)

I wonder if our selectors have any knowledge of the game Younis Khan was never a one day player it is not his type. Younis was playing T/20 cricket also it can happen in Pakistan only.

Posted by jtggrehhtrhtrht on (June 21, 2012, 4:20 GMT)

just bring back yousaf so pakistan can be number 1 team

Posted by   on (June 21, 2012, 3:18 GMT)

u know pak team is overhyoed.. No specilist n consistant batsman only depending upon so called allrounder. bring back imran nazir on top order, why keep ajmal out when he is world class player. got so amazed by playing eleven.. good job. Although i am not a fan of pak team but fan of some special players like najir, afridi and other. why always there is Younis? Do think and select best eleven......otherwise same history repeat again always. Young guns...wat did UMAR AKMAL did, slowed down runrate for his fifty on end of innings... isnt that considered as selfishness

Posted by Zahidsaltin on (June 21, 2012, 1:13 GMT)

Time is up for Faisal Iqbal, Hafiz, Shoib Malik, Imran Farhat and Sarfraz. I am as much confused about Sami as he has confused every one for last 10 years. Can't understand a bowler capable of bowling at 150 can't learn his line and length and some other tricks even after 100 years. In decades he couldn't develope an inswinger and overall a very little swing. SAMI how is it possible what you do???

Posted by Zahidsaltin on (June 21, 2012, 1:09 GMT)

Making HAFIZ captain will prove to be the real mistake. You destroyed his batting if there was any AND you took afridiĀ“s initiative away. AFRIDI has to be the captain of T20 team in the worldcup otherwise Misbah should be retained in the team as captain.

Posted by Zahidsaltin on (June 21, 2012, 1:05 GMT)

IT IS DIFFICULT to understand your logics. When you have no balance in the T20 team then why to keep it so. Why not accept your fault when the team has been performing poorly in T20 and ODIs for two consective series now. You need to add Kamran Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Imran Nazir and Shahzeb in the squad. Your biggest problem is that you consider Sohail Tanveer an allrounder when he is only a bowler, You consider Hafiz a batsman while he only plays because he can bowl. Afridi is considered a batsman while he is only a bowler now and has seized to score runs some two years ago and only fires every 10th innings. The Main reason for him is that the middle order slows everything down so much that he is needed to blast from word go. JUST EVERY ONE IS CONSIDERED A BATSMAN WHEN HE IS NOT. Try this team: Nasir Jamshed, Ahmad Shehzad, Afidi, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Hafiz, Kamran Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Sohail Tanveer, Umar Gul, Said Ajmal.

Posted by waxteruk on (June 20, 2012, 23:12 GMT)

Pak need change, out with the old and in with the new. I bored of hearing about the same old things with them. Always go on about talent, well then use it. You have a new coach use the seniors player to help young talent to progress and grow. Don't use old players in the team like Misbah and so on.

Posted by drdani on (June 20, 2012, 23:02 GMT)

well said qasim bhai !! really liked the way he discussed our weaknesses especially the problem of inconsistency, sami,n patience !!

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 22:34 GMT)

they should have younis play the test and he will get his form back as the longer he stays at the crease his form will improve and will have it back and have to continue playing cricket abroad when Pakistan is not playing as a nation that way the payers don't get out of touch when they play international cricket.

Posted by pintu01 on (June 20, 2012, 21:58 GMT)

Retire Misbah, Younis and drop Umar Akmal. Bring in Shoaib Malik and Yousuf.

Posted by Zeid on (June 20, 2012, 21:27 GMT)

After a successful period first under Waqar Younis and then Mohsin Khan, Pakistan are back to "normal". Unimaginative selection, poor fielding, slow over-rate, inexplicable batting collapses and may be something more. I cannot understand the selection of Mohamed Sami. He had his opportunities in which he took only 86 wickets in Tests at an average of 52. Normally, good fast bowlers average about 22 to 30 runs per wicket. When will Pakistan management understand that speed alone is useless if the bowler keeps on bowling on the leg side. Keeping in mind the next World Cup, the emphasis should have been on younger fast bowlers...it doesn't make a difference, as Pakistan are loosing badly over the last few series...so it is better to lose while grooming young players. Pakistan gives an impression that they find 'fielding' a burden rather than a 'fun'. Unless attitudes change, I am afraid, we will see many matches slipping away.!!

Posted by MWaqqar on (June 20, 2012, 20:46 GMT)

If Pak is going to T20 World Cup with the team that played T20 in SL, then I think they would be lucky if they beat either NZ or BD

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 19:55 GMT)

I don't think Pakistan has agood enough batsman to replace an experienced player as Younis and neither can Pakistan risk to make a new captain because Pakistan has suffered a lot previously because of frequent change of captain and a part of one or two series Misbah has done a very good job as a captain!.

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 19:37 GMT)

It is time to lose some games after wining continuously without future plans. i agree with some comments because it is new generation now. Senior players must create the future to keep the quality of the game of cricket if they love the game

@getsetgopk...no bro check the ICC rankings he's now ranked 2nd and ajmal is on 3rd and agreed with u that we can't expect afridi to fire in every game, hafeez have to take a stand and score some runs but tell me one thing misbah is 39 already afridi is also showing signs of retirement from one day cricket and now if u drop hafeez then whose gonna lead pakistan??and now don't tell me that gul or ajmal are gonna lead the side coz they are experienced enough!

@AmjadZork: brother, in which world you are living right now the biggeest Bounded is S. Afridi more thah Y.K. he is taking place of talent cricketer such as S. Ajmal and you are talking about S. Afridi as a captain, He is the headech of Pak team and he is most defensice captain in Pak history. if pak team wants a balance in team at first they have to through S. Afridi from ODI team.

Posted by short_cover on (June 20, 2012, 16:51 GMT)

Younis need to reevaluate his limited over game and make a decision. He cant go on like this. However, another BIG issue is how Pak is un-knowingly causing so much damage to Saeed Ajmal's career... even he might no know it. First, dont know why Pak is sticking with Hafeez as opener. If he can be selected as a spinner then do it that way and bring a batsman on top. Otherwise, Ajmal doesn't see the ball until the entire bowling line-up go through it first; pacers, spinners (hafeez/afridi). So he doesn't get chance to get wickets since he is usually bowling at slightly easier conditions to bat on (old ball). The pace of the ball is gone so unless he is having a great day with spin/dosra, he becomes just a bowler to contain the innings. This is not how you treat the 'Primary' spinner in the team. If we call him the main spinner, then he should be given the ball like it. (Look at India, Harbajan didn't last a year when they also started doing this)

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 16:39 GMT)

The biggest problem Pakistan is facing at the moment, like always, is that they cant drop the senior players. Now you cant have Azhar Ali, Muhammad Hafeez, Younis Khan, Misbah Ul Haq and Asad Shafiq in an ODI team. Time has now come for Younis Khan to concentrate on his test career as he is one of the finest test players Pakistan has ever had. His ODI form recently has been below poor. Younis is a wonderful fielder and has taken blinders in slips but even his fielding abilities cant keep him in team now. Its the right time for him to quit limited overs cricket.

Posted by ProdigyA on (June 20, 2012, 15:30 GMT)

Pakistan will loose their best fielder :(

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 15:26 GMT)

pakistan can be no.2 test side if they can win the series 2-0 coz the table will be updated again and the defeat in 2009 test will be cut

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 15:18 GMT)

misbah and younus khan are great players but now its time for them to step down from limited over cricket. haris sohail, imran nazir ,nasir jamshad ,usman salahudin , ahmed shahzad should be given chances . Pakistan require a bating line up which can score 300 runs on any given pitch so in next tournaments we could come with great batting aand good bowling. Hope so it happens soon . Inshallah

Posted by getsetgopk on (June 20, 2012, 15:15 GMT)

@Asian_Cricketer: Hafeez is ranked 4th in ODI rankings but who is going to bat in this Pak team? Unless you think Afridi is going to score runs in each and every game Pak will never succeed, Hafeez bowls well but bowling is not our problem, we need someone to score runs first before we can defend it. Why is Hafeez so interested in bowling anyways, why isn't he focusing on his batting, score a century for a change.

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 15:04 GMT)

Bring back IMRAN NAZIR for T-20's!

Posted by Nadeem1976 on (June 20, 2012, 14:57 GMT)

It's time for younas to retire from ODI for the sake of country. His ODI average in last two years is 20 and how many chances selectors are going to give to sami. I know he is fast bowler but he just lost the last match without any reason. 15 runs in last over not acceptable. Give chance to new blood and let go the oldies and also Misbah should Quit ODI too.

Posted by Ghori303 on (June 20, 2012, 14:51 GMT)

In my opinion this is a right time to make changes for T20 WC. My Team of 15 final players for T20 WC is as follow:

Mohammed Hafeez (c), Imran Nazir, Imran Farhat, Ahmed Shahzad, Nasir Jamshed, Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razaq, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal (wc), Hammad Azam, Sohail Tanveer, Saeed Ajmal, Umar Gull & Junaid Khan.

How many of you will agree with my team?

Posted by pkcricfan101 on (June 20, 2012, 14:51 GMT)

Pak odi future doesnt look good unless they can find consistent new comers. Misbah is 38 and has atmost one more year left. Younis might not be selected because of his form. Shahid afridi is considering retirement. Mohammad hafeez the future captain is out of form and captains need to lead from the front. Azhar ali and umar akmal are positives but they have to show consistency. Pakistan needs to try new comers like Babar Azam, Afaq Raheem. There is also fawad alam. The criteria of which selectors should look for is consistency and commitment to fielding as these are the things pakistan has been lacking for a long time.

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 14:44 GMT)

I think Younus has atleast 2/3 of cricket in him. We need him for the 2015 worldcup. Putting him on the sidelines on the basis of a few matches isn't the way forward. Same about Afridi, he also needs to play until 2015.

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 14:41 GMT)

Let it should be decided after test series

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 14:31 GMT)

Time for new blood....agressive, positive and confident

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 13:46 GMT)

Younis should concentrate on test matches as he is world class test player but in the incoming test matches after the bann on misbah we are one batsmen short and selected squad has not a credible replacement . We should call yousaf immediately to replace misbah in first test because i cant expect much from taufiq hafeez faisal iqbal & farhat as test batsmen . Sami should be given one chance as he has got pace alongwith gul ajmal & abdurrehman . Pity is we have not a good keeper batsmen .Kamran akmal should be called upon as soon as possible .

@Manee94, as a Lankan I feel Pakistan must start grooming Usman Salahuddin and Babar Azam to be the future batting stars. Babar Azam can even be an excellent all rounder.

well younus khan is not the only culprit in this pakistani one day side, mohammad hafeez, younus khan, umar gul, sarfaraz, saeed ajmal, afridi, were all failures.fieldind was also below standard. misbah ,imran farhat, azhar ali were criticized by most of us earlier , but in the end they were the successful players. some of our our senior players like younus khan ,should now say good bye to one day cricket.but the problem is our players don't go that easily.

Posted by bddhika_harindat on (June 20, 2012, 12:54 GMT)

Mr Qasim, In your assessment about Pakistan's defeat here, you should not foget that PK won against SL in UAE was mainly due to sudden batting collalpses of SL players, otherwise it could have been the same result.

pakistan need new young blood in all department. but always select old rejected players

Posted by IKISM on (June 20, 2012, 12:52 GMT)

Younis Khan is a brilliant example of inconsistency and so is the case with Imran Farhat. I think Pakistan should give players like Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali a chance at fixed slots like opening and No.3 because they have the right attitude. The professor who specilisation is in DUCKS should be dropped down the order. And if Nasir Jamshed is passed fit he should be given a chance and not to be kept on sidelines. Also consider giving Junaid Khan a regular chance because he has the temparament.

Posted by Extraz on (June 20, 2012, 12:47 GMT)

@RANA1610...true hafeez is not performing with the bat but he is giving his best in almost every game with the ball and don't u remember that he is ranked 4th in best odi bowlers ranking!

Make Afridi Captain of T20 & ODI, i bet the same team will perform good under Afridi's pressure...

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 12:43 GMT)

I agree with Qassim when he says that Younis Khans batting form is far below standard expected from him.The time has come to think of replacing him with a younger batsman who would be able to strengthen Pakistans batting line up.I strongly feel Kamran Akmal should be given a chance in One Day and T20 matches as he is the only wicket keeper around who can also contribute with the bat consistently and effectively.

Posted by fohsiess on (June 20, 2012, 12:33 GMT)

this the problem with Pakistan cricket...they continue on with players like younus and burn the youngsters, it's time for him to step down himself...hafeez he is doing the same thing which got him kicked from the team back in 2007 i.e. get ducks in every match...for akmal i think we should some leniency towards him as he is the only pak player in top 15 in both t20s and ODIs

Posted by Manee94 on (June 20 2012, 10:33 AM GMT) :- If this average of Baber Azam is true, then why is he being delayed. Stop wasting time with Younis Khan and get in agressive younsters.

Posted by JBerger on (June 20, 2012, 11:39 GMT)

Younis has always been a below par ODI player, I wonder why they keep picking him up! Even Misbah himself is not a good ODI player all he does is slow down the pace so much that put pressure on the rest of the team. Instead of Misbah & Younis they should trust Azhar & Asad while the Opening slot should be takien by Imran Nazir or some young players like Ahmad Shazad. Shoaib malik could also be a good middle order option.

Posted by Farrukh.91. on (June 20, 2012, 11:37 GMT)

giving such sort of comments before the test series isn't a wise move, this will get these players under pressure in the test series!

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 11:32 GMT)

I think this is time to change pak team. One YK, WKeeper and Sami. These players must be leave the side and give a chance to youngster. and opener hafees not good in one day and T20. I think give a chance to Imran nazeer and he is middle order to hafees. fast bowler Junaid khan is better choice for Aus tour.

Posted by joseyesu on (June 20, 2012, 11:30 GMT)

So the scapegoat is YK.YK is a proven player and a team man. It is absolutely the confidence, selectors and team has to give and that is what going to do good for the team. No point in playing test also, if there is no confidence on him. Depending on 1 player is always going to have a havoc to the team(say ajmal)

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 11:23 GMT)

good move here.....Younis is a warrior, and we must save him for test matches, Hafeez is not an opening batsmen, he should be brought down the order, he is a good fielder and his bowling has been more then useful, ,,,,dont pakistan have any decent opening batsmen since Anwar and sohail??? its a disgrace! WHy is azar mahmud not in this team?? look at his performances!! he is the next best replacement for RAzzak medium pace and good hitting ability! ...I think the PCB should hire moi :P

i dont know if you guys remember but what happened to Iftikar Anjum the last time i saw him bowl for the team he was very consistent and economical..Mohammed Sami has always been inconsistent and very expensive. Azhar Ali should replace younus as no.3 batsmen

My best possible advice to YK is to retire gracefully in ODI's & continue only Test cricket in future !!!!!

It's unfortunate on behalf of the player and sad on behalf of the selector to issue such statement. In the English, SA and Australian set up, the player are wise enough to NOT give a chance to selectors to open up their mouths by volunteer and brisk retirement announcement either from all formats or from any particular ones. Paul Collingwood is a good example.

Now Hafeez will be the captain of Pakistan who is a specialist in Duck's.

while selectors are diisscussing for YK ODI future I think they should the cricket future of him. Every player has his time to show his talent also during his carrier bad patches always come but if a player work hard and try its best to come out of bad days than he is lucky one. But some time its too late and he has to take desion to call his retirement and give a chance to some .young player to take his position Youns played wonderful cricket scoring thousands of runs, but the time has come he should considered for his retirement before he might be kikes out

I think one of the most sensible comments from a PCB official after a loooong time. Iqbal Qasim made a lot of sense in his comments. I hope this selection panel will, over a period of time, be able to achieve a fighting unit.

Babar and Hammad Azam need to feature more often in international cricket. Sidelining Hammad Azam from the T20s was inexplicable.

Will Hafeez be continuing with one after one DUCK and under 10?

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 10:53 GMT)

Give him a chance at least against the Aussie's. Because the youngster's don't have temperament to face the Aussie. Azhar Ali is a good find for Pakistan But he need to be consistent in his batting. Although he is very cool customer.

Why dont you guys plan to play him against India? We have a reputation of bringing players back to form! Ricky Ponting will surely agree.....

What about Duck Specialist Hafeez.

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 10:48 GMT)

He should only play test matches for now. hes not in a good form in ODI cricket.

I mean Babar Azam, average of 57 in list A...impressive enough

Posted by Manee94 on (June 20, 2012, 10:31 GMT)

Am I the only one who think Habib Azam looks like a really good prospect and should be tried?

Posted by Philippe on (June 20, 2012, 10:25 GMT)

He should have been kept aside till now.. especially after 2011 WC.. He doesnt show the attitude to play ODIs.. better for pakistan to give chance to youngsters.. country is full of talented lads.. why to waste a position for someone below average like younis khan..

Posted by   on (June 20, 2012, 10:23 GMT)

i think YK should retire from ODIs now and focus solely on Test cricket...hes a valuable test batsman but his form & style is lacking in ODIs..
