Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 1st Test, Galle, 3rd day June 24, 2012

Looked to tie the batsmen down - Randiv

Offspinner Suraj Randiv's four wickets in Pakistan's first innings in Galle have set the match up nicely for Sri Lanka; the plan, Randiv said, was to keep the Pakistan batsmen in check.

"We have been trying to bowl a good length and line because, normally, Pakistanis don't like to be tied down," Randiv said at the end of the third day's play. "Especially in the longer games they want to hit boundaries, so we tried to block the boundaries and bowl good line and length.

"With my height I don't think I need to bother about the flight, what is important is my line and lengths, which I am trying to improve all the time. I am trying to bowl all six balls in one spot, and then try to add a little variation as well."

Playing with Sri Lanka's senior spinner, Rangana Herath, Randiv said, has taught him a lot. "Herath is our No. 1 spinner. With him, we [the other spinners] discuss a lot of things like strategy and the weak points of batsmen, and try to use [his advice] in matches."

Randiv had spent much of the IPL 2012 on the sidelines, not getting a game for his franchise, Chennai Super Kings. He had used the spare time to fine-tune his bowling in the nets, he said. "Before I left for the IPL, I had trained with my spin-bowling coach, Piyal Wijetunga, for two days. After the England Tests [in March-April, during which Randiv took seven wickets in four innings], there were some shortcomings in my bowling, so I worked with my coach and started with the basics.

"My coach told me what I should do to regain my normal rhythm. I kept that in mind, and although I didn't get an opportunity to play any IPL matches I had the time to practice what my coach had told me. So I don't think my time at the IPL was wasted."

12 wrong decisions ( 9 vs pak 3 vs SL ) in just 3 days very poor & it makes more poor when they came from 2 very experienced elite panel umpires. Icc should take notice to this. & yes agree if SL has it for england home series why not for here? ok if technology is expensive, they could still allow reviews as in this match most of decsions can be rectify by simple replay. or icc should allow 3rd umpire to overturn simple once by simple replays on spot. you want on time finish or right decision? & there should b a ranking system for umpires , each bad decision to minus some points & after certain limit remove them from elite pannel.

the problem with Randiv is consistency, as someone pointed out earlier.

Sachithra Senanayake,Seekuge prasanna, Sajeewa Weerakoon were lucky to play for SL....they were just first class materials who could not turn a single delivery and its very disgusting to call them spinners....Randiv was and is the best spinner we have in SL after murali...he was hard done by in dilshan era where he was left out after a 5 wicket haul Vs Australia...this was the reason for his inconsistency in the England series as he was low of confidence....Hopefully he will continue his good form from now on

Suraj Randiv is no good. There are far better bowlers in Sri Lanka and they include Sachithra Senanayake, Jeevan Mendis and Roshan Jayatissa as their bowling averages suggest.

Herath the number one bowler? Ranidv is not even Sri Lanka's second best spinner. He's lucky to be getting so many chances. Let's see how he plays outside Galle.

Spinners win matches, that's why Australia are going to struggle in upcoming series. Well bowled sir...

Randiv is a good bowler, but he's not consistent enough. In SL's last tour of england, Randiv was brilliant in the 1st test but was awful in the 2nd test. I hope he does well because he would be a very useful bowler for the 2015 World cup. His height will help him get some extra bounce in Australian pitches.
