Pakistan in Sri Lanka T20I Series - 1st T20I

Sri Lanka v Pakistan

Sri Lanka won by 37 runs

Sohail Tanvir will start off with the new ball. Dilshan and Mahela will open for Sri Lanka. Two slips in place

Amin: "I understand that Hammad Azam is a replacement of Abdul Razzaq but you don't have to treat him like you treated Razzaq. Let this poor guy prove himself."

6.55 pm Time for the national anthems

Angelo Mathews says these games are good practice for Sri Lanka as they are scheduled to play their group games in the World T20 in Hambantota

Faisal: "Why on earth Abdur Rehman not in the squad ? Is Pakistan still playing in the sandbox with few months away from World T20?"

Gareth: "I'm looking forward to this entire series. Pakistan will be excited to play some good tough cricket, and Lanka will be excited to play any team that isn't India." Their excitement will last as long as the last week of July then, when they are scheduled to play another series against the neighbours from across the Palk Strait.

6.45 pm Dav Whatmore, Pakistan coach, says that separate teams for separate formats is the way forward for Pakistan, despite there being lots of talk about it back home.

6.40 pm Russell Arnold doing the pitch report on air says that it is hard, has a few cracks, but there are some patches of concern for the captains. He says they have been patched up, and thinks that the pitch behaviour might be unpredictable

Kanishkaa, our man at the ground, informs us that it is quite a sparse crowd at the moment, slowly filling up, but to expect a full house would be very optimistic.

6.30 pm Mahela wins the toss and Sri Lanka will bat first

Mahela: "Looks like a good wicket, might slow down later on. Pakistan keep producing a lot of talented players, we have to be on our guard." Senanayake, the offspinner, and Lokuarachchi, the legspinner, are making their T20I debuts. Lokuarachchi last played for Sri Lanka in 2007.

Hafeez: "Captaincy is the biggest honour you can get as a player. I am honoured." 33-year old Shakeel Ansar is debuting as a wicketkeeper-batsman. And that man Mohammad Sami, who you can somehow never write off, is back

More from Kanishkaa: "Lasith Malinga bowling off a 2-step run-up on the practice wicket. Now won't Pakistan wish for that?" You bet

6.25 pm To say that the new ground in Hambantota is in a remote location is an understatement. This is what Kanishkaa Balachandran, our man at the ground, has to say. "This ground is an oasis in the jungle. Very similar in appearance to the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Swap the sand for trees."

Pakistan have a new captain, Mohammad Hafeez, and these two games are more important than just a preparation for the World Twenty20 for them, says Kanishkaa in his series preview.

6.15 pm Less than six months after Pakistan and Sri Lanka played a full series in the UAE, they will clash with each other in the island nation in two T20Is, five ODIs and three Tests over the course of this month and the next. The T20Is, usually devoid of much significance, acquire importance this time as the World Twenty20, to be played in Sri Lanka in September, approaches closer. Both the T20Is will be played in Hambantota, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, and Mahela Jayawardene says that Sri Lanka will use these two games to find the right combination ahead of the world event
