Pakistan in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 2nd ODI

Sri Lanka v Pakistan

Sri Lanka won by 76 runs

We are ready to go. Overcast in Pallekelle. Upul Tharanga has been promoted to open the innings. Brings back the pair of Tharanga and Dilshan

2.25pm Meanwhile, when cornered by Tony Greig about the cramped schedule of cricket, Kumar Sangakkara wriggles out by saying they are professionals and this is the reality and that they need to make sure they give their best whenever they play. I am okay with whatever he says to the media, but I hope when it comes to influencing decisions, he shows more care and thought for the game of cricket. Five minutes to go to the start

2.20pm There has been a bit of talk about the SL batting order, and whether their best three batsmen should bat together at 1, 2 and 3. And also about Pakistan, if they should strengthen their batting a bit, because their bowling looks robust and can perhaps take a hit. However, it seems - as of now - neither of them have made a change. Pakistan for sure, and Sri Lanka's batting order we will soon find out

2pm It's overcast but not dry at the moment in Pallekelle. Mahela Jayawardene has won the toss, and on the same pitch at the same ground, he has chosen to bat again. Mahela is hoping for a better track: it hasn't rained yesterday so less moisture, he hopes. Sri Lanka have picked the same XI, but doesn't promise the same batting order.

Even Misbah-ul-Haq. feels the pitch is drier than two days ago. Poor news for Pakistan: Mohammad Sami is out with a thumb injury. Left-arm quick Rahat Ali gets a debut. Misbah says he gets extra bounce, so watch out. By the looks of it, another quick from the unending supply from the conveyor belt of quicks in Pakistan

1.45pm Hello and welcome to ODI action on a Saturday. Looks like the wet Edgbaston means this will be the most-followed cricket this weekend, unless there is a double forfeit in England. Back to Pallekelle, though, Pakistan have now won nine of their last 11 ODIs against Sri Lanka. They need to find a way to loosen this grip of Pakistan's. Getting out of T20 mode could be a start.

While we wait for the toss, which is 15 minutes away, you could watch highlight of the first ODI here. Not available in US and Canada, though

0.1

Umar Gul to Tharanga, 1 run, short of a length, just outside off, pushed between cover and extra cover for one

Two slips in place

0.2

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, Dilshan makes a watchful start, which is good to know. Leaves this alone outside off. Not too wide, mind you

0.3

Umar Gul to Dilshan, FOUR, strays on the pads, and Dilshan will like this. Fullish, on the pads, and he accepts it with glee by flicking it over square leg. That's what you need when you are out of form

0.4

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 run, short of a length, gives him the width, and Dilshan slashes it to third man for one

Two slips for Tharanga too

0.5

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, short of a length, pitched on off, angling away, left alone

0.6

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, beauty. Length ball, on off, looks like one that will swing in, but leaves him upon pitching. Lucky to not edge it

End of over 1 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 6/0 (RR: 6.00)
WU Tharanga    1* (3b)      Umar Gul    1-0-6-0
TM Dilshan    5* (3b 1x4)

Sohail Tanvir to take the second new ball

1.1

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, (no ball) FOUR, and even Tanvir provides Dilshan a freebie. Half-volley on the pads, dispatched right of midwicket. And it's a huge no-ball too

Free hit now. Dilshan must be lovin' it

1.1

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, 1 run, slower ball, short and wide, and Akmal misfields at point to allow them a single

1.2

Sohail Tanvir to Tharanga, 2 runs, short of a length, just outside off, seaming in, nudged past midwicket, and Tharanga comes back for a lazy second. Hafeez's throw misses by six inches. He was gone if it had hit. Mahela grimaces in the dressing room

1.3

Sohail Tanvir to Tharanga, no run, length ball, on off, defended to cover

1.4

Sohail Tanvir to Tharanga, 2 runs, nicely played. This is shaping in towards middle and leg, and he just provides it direction between midwicket and mid-on

1.5

Sohail Tanvir to Tharanga, 1 leg bye, a much better delivery. Heavy ball. Short of a length, outside off, seaming in, beats the bat, hits the back leg in front, but the extra bounce saves him

1.6

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, length ball, just outside off, left alone with the angle

End of over 2 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 17/0 (RR: 8.50)
TM Dilshan    10* (6b 2x4)      Sohail Tanvir    1-0-10-0
WU Tharanga    5* (7b)      Umar Gul    1-0-6-0

2.1

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, short of a length, Tharanga pushes to cover, takes the general two steps down the pitch, but Dilshan charges up. Comes back in time, though

2.2

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, loose drive from Tharanga. Length on off, slight seam away. Tharanga doesn't move his feet, and pushes at it. Beaten

2.3

Umar Gul to Tharanga, FOUR, that's better from Tharanga. Similar delivery, slightly closer to Tharanga, which is why he connects with the drive, and places it between point and cover-point

2.4

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, length, on the pads, defended to short midwicket

2.5

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, bouncer from Gul, on the stumps, Tharanga ducks under it

2.6

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, dug in again, chest high, middle and off, Tharanga keeps it down

End of over 3 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 21/0 (RR: 7.00)

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, short of a length, on off, Dilshan pushes at it, and is beaten by the seam

3.3

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, extra bounce and seam here. Slightly shorter than the previous one, on leg stump, Dilshan plays at it, and is beaten. Sarfraz collects this in front of his chest

3.4

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, fuller, stump to stump, Dilshan is forward in defence

The sun is out now

3.5

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, another heavy ball, hits him on the thigh as he looks to work it to leg

3.6

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, short of a length, just outside off, left alone

Good comeback over from Tanvir after he began with a no-ball that went for four. The first maiden of the innings

End of over 4 (maiden) Sri Lanka 21/0 (RR: 5.25)
TM Dilshan    10* (12b 2x4)      Sohail Tanvir    2-1-10-0
WU Tharanga    9* (13b 1x4)      Umar Gul    2-0-10-0

4.1

Umar Gul to Tharanga, FOUR, beautiful punch shot. Short of a length, in front of off, and he just meets it. No intent to hit it. Just a connection. Through extra cover it flies

Second slip moves to short cover

4.2

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, Gul comes back with a beauty of his own. Pitches on leg, hits the seam, and moves away, beating the bat in front of off stump

Tharanga not happy with movement behind the bowler's arm, but that movement is happening about 50 feet above the sight screen

4.3

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, length, on off, defended off the front foot

4.4

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, short of a length, no room, pushed to cover

5.1

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, length ball outside off, allowed to angle away

5.2

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, yes, no, no... short of a length, pushed to point, Dilshan wants a single, but Tharanga sends him back rightly

5.3

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, 2 runs, length ball, pitched outside leg, flicked away nicely past square leg

Got to like Dilshan's approach today. Waiting for the loose ball. Finally respecting the conditions and the format

5.4

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, 1 wide, big wide down the leg side

Slight rain around

5.4

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, short of a length, no room, hits him on the thigh pad

2.58pm It has passed already. The covers are going off, the batsmen being called back. The Pakistan fielders in a huddle at the edge of the boundary. The batsmen are back

2.57pm It's heavy now. We are walking off. The covers come on. Looks like a passing shower

3.01pm So about four minutes lost to that passing shower

5.5

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, short of a length, outside off, allowed to pass through, dies at Sarfraz

Bounce on this pitch hasn't been as menacing as the other day

5.6

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, FOUR, fuller, driving length, and also on the pads, and Dilshan has crashed this right back past the bowler

End of over 6 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 32/0 (RR: 5.33)

WU Tharanga    13* (19b 2x4)      Umar Gul    3-0-14-0

"This actually reminds me of my childhood when I asked my teacher, what would be English of "Baarish hote hote ruk gyi". He told me: It stopped while raining or, simply, it couldn't rain." Priceless, Mazher Arshad

6.1

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, short of a length, on the pads, pushed to midwicket

Tharanga again asking people to stop moving, but they are in the first tier, well above the sight screen

6.2

Umar Gul to Tharanga, FOUR, another lovely punch from Tharanga. Short of a length, on off, and without seeming to hitting it, he has blasted it between cover and extra cover

Meanwhile Ramiz Rambo Raja says they used to call Paul Reifell "Paul Bandook". Gul goes round the stumps

6.3

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, cramps him up with the angle this time, pushed to cover

Just one wide slip in place. And a short cover

6.4

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, headed for top of off, nicely defended by Tharanga

6.5

Umar Gul to Tharanga, 1 run, short of a length, this one stops at him a little, and Tharanga hits it uppishly to the left of mid-on. Doesn't carry to Afridi

A slip and a leg slip

6.6

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, wide length ball, Dilshan goes for the booming drive, and is beaten as it holds its line

WU Tharanga    18* (24b 3x4)      Sohail Tanvir    3-1-17-0

7.1

Sohail Tanvir to Tharanga, OUT, Tanvir strikes. This is a length ball, outside off, lands on the upright seam, holds its line, and takes the edge of the pushing bat. Tharanga walks

WU Tharanga c †Sarfraz Ahmed b Sohail Tanvir 18 (33m 25b 3x4 0x6) SR: 72.00

Dil Dil Pakistan by Vital Signs being played at the ground as Kumar Sangakkara walks out. Two slips now

7.2

Sohail Tanvir to Sangakkara, no run, short of a length, moving in, defended in front of off

"Tharanga looks such a different batsman in sub-continent as an opener than what we saw him in Australia as an opener....though Mahela has a brilliant record as opener, but bringing back tharanga at the top looks like the right decision for team's sake...but is it the right decision when u think abt the next World Cup (In Australia)?" Brilliantly put, Arif

7.3

Sohail Tanvir to Sangakkara, FOUR, too straight, and Sanga punishes him. Just short of a leg, just leg side of middle, and he glances it fine after moving across a little

7.4

Sohail Tanvir to Sangakkara, 1 leg bye, too straight again, but this time Sanga is beaten by the movement, and gets just a leg-bye

7.5

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, Dilshan opens the face, soft hands, and this lands short of second slip

7.6

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, length ball, outside off, watches it into Sarfraz's gloves

8.4

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, bouncer from Gul, over the top of off, and Dilshan sways out of its line

8.6

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, fuller, on off, Dilshan drives, and gets a thicker inside edge, towards midwicket

End of over 9 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 47/1 (RR: 5.22)

9.1

Sohail Tanvir to Sangakkara, 2 runs, short of a length, seaming into the pads, worked to the right of fine leg for two

9.2

Sohail Tanvir to Sangakkara, 1 run, Wrong end. Steered square, Akmal dives full-length, outstanding save. Dilshan and Sanga are at the same end - Sanga ball-watching. Akmal, though, throws at the same end, and misses. Sanga survives. Had he lobbed this to the bowler's end, Sanga was a goner. The back-up throw had a chance too, but it missed from short mdiwcket

9.3

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, 2 runs, pushed with an open face, between cover-point and point, timed well enough to get two

9.4

I can hear Ali Azmat being played at the ground. A true rockstar. Meanwhile Hafeez comes back. Breakthrough man he is

16.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Sangakkara, OUT, and a breakthrough he provides. Who could have guessed this? A flat, straight loosener, Sanga goes back to punch this. Does it stop a bit? Perhaps. Perhaps not. However, he ends up lobbing this off the toe end, back for a soft catch to Hafeez. Don't shake Hafeez's hand any time soon. You might turn to gold

We now have a situation where if all of Ajmal's overs have to be bowled, he will have to bowl seven of the upcoming 16 overs. Too many eggs in his basket? Sri Lanka take the batting PP. This should bring Ajmal back. Yes. Misbah takes the ball from Afridi's hand, and hands it over to Ajmal. Long-on, deep midwicket and deep square are out. Ajal to bowl round the stumps

Saeed Ajmal to Dilshan, 1 run, Has Tanvir missed a run-out here? MJ is late to start as Dilshan dabs this to short third. Tanvir is slow, too, and fires in a half-volley throw. As Sarfraz hits the stumps with his gloves, MJ is out. The bails come off in the next frame - and there is a huge lag, we are working with a slow frame rate here - and by then MJ is in, only slightly in. The correct decision given the technology available. Had Tanvir been slightly quicker, though, Pakistan would have had their man

Shahid Afridi to Jayawardene, 1 run, MJ wants the late-cut now, from inside the gloves of the keeper, but it also hits MJ's glove, so the ball doesn't travel, and he gets just a single

41.5

Shahid Afridi to Dilshan, 2 runs, into the pads, worked away for a two to deep square leg, and Afridi is not happy with the deep fielder

41.6

42.4

Umar Gul to Jayawardene, 1 run, angling into the pads, helped away for a single to fine leg

42.5

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, oh oh oh... Sharp short delivery from Gul, Dilshan wants to run this down, but the extra bounce nearly gets him. Dilshan withdraws from the shot at the last moment

42.6

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 run, short again, straight too, and he has pulled this to deep square. Leaps high in the air, then Dilshan glances up towards the sky, removes the helmet and accepts the applause. Gets a pat on the back from Gul too. A responsible innings after the much-earned criticism in the first match

End of over 43 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 219/3 (RR: 5.09)
TM Dilshan    100* (120b 11x4)      Umar Gul    7-0-38-0

43.3

Saeed Ajmal to Dilshan, no run, slower through the air, Dilshan early into the flick, gets hit on the pad

43.4

Saeed Ajmal to Dilshan, 1 run, doosra, it starts outside leg, and is swept away for a single

43.5

Saeed Ajmal to Jayawardene, 2 runs, Mahela makes room, gets a short delivery, and cuts it in front of square for two

43.6

Saeed Ajmal to Jayawardene, no run, How is that not out? MJ has moved right across in front of the stumps to try to lap this fine. Ajmal fires it in full and straight, and hits him flush on the pad. Is it the angle from round the stumps that has saved him? Pitched outside leg. Top decision there

End of over 44 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 224/3 (RR: 5.09)
DPMD Jayawardene    40* (39b 5x4)      Saeed Ajmal    8-0-30-0

44.1

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 run, short, on off, punched away to sweeper-cover for one

44.2

Umar Gul to Jayawardene, no run, slog across the line, and this short-of-a-length delivery beats him. Slightly early into him

44.3

Umar Gul to Jayawardene, FOUR, slower ball, 116ks, but on a length and turning into middle and leg, and MJ makes room to thrash this past midwicket

44.4

Umar Gul to Jayawardene, FOUR, top delivery that goes for four runs. Gul digs this in short, and it moves in sharply and hits Jayawardene's glove to go between keeper and third man

End of over 45 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 235/3 (RR: 5.22)

DPMD Jayawardene    49* (43b 7x4)      Saeed Ajmal    8-0-30-0

45.1

45.2

Saeed Ajmal to Dilshan, 1 run, short, pulled away to deep midwicket for one

45.3

Saeed Ajmal to Jayawardene, FOUR, reverse-seeps this from well outside leg, all along the ground, past point, and the sweeper-cover has no chance. A fitting way to reach fifty in an innings full of innovation and premeditation

45.4

Saeed Ajmal to Jayawardene, OUT, bowled'im. MJ shimmies down, plays for an offbreak, looking to go inside out, but this one doesn't turn and hits the top of off. Ajmal shows emotion through a fistpump

DPMD Jayawardene b Saeed Ajmal 53 (62m 45b 8x4 0x6) SR: 117.77

TM Dilshan    105* (127b 11x4)      Umar Gul    8-0-49-0

Tanvir comes back now. Round the wicket

46.1

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, SIX, he has smoked it. Slower ball, in the slot, on a length outside off, angling in, Dilshan plants the front foot down and smashes it over midwicket

46.2

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, short, wide outside off, looks to pull it, and it hurries onto him. Ends up hitting it back to Tanvir

46.3

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, 1 run, short again, Dilshan pulls, mis-hits, which is just as well because this one doesn't carry to deep midwicket

Over the stumps for Perera

46.4

Sohail Tanvir to Perera, FOUR, length ball, middle and leg, drilled down the ground, all along the ground, and beats long-on. That' some shot

46.5

Sohail Tanvir to Perera, 1 leg bye, comes back with a short ball that beats the pull, hits him in the rib cage, but still goes for a leg-bye

46.6

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, no run, length ball, angling in, driven to mid-off

End of over 47 (12 runs) Sri Lanka 252/4 (RR: 5.36)

47.1

Saeed Ajmal to Perera, no run, short, outside off, looks to cut it, gets a bottom edge into the pitch

47.2

Saeed Ajmal to Perera, FOUR, quicker one, full, and this has gone back at ten times the speed off the bat. Boy that has rocketed back all along the ground to long-off

47.3

Saeed Ajmal to Perera, 1 run, slower this time, short too, punched to sweeper-cover for one

47.4

Saeed Ajmal to Dilshan, 2 runs, length ball, turning into the pads, worked between deep midwicket and deep square, and comes back for two

47.5

Saeed Ajmal to Dilshan, 1 run, that's the one that doesn't turn, and goes off the leading edge through cover for one

47.6

Saeed Ajmal to Perera, SIX, Perera is providing a nice finishing touch to this innings. Length ball, no flight, on the pads, and he clears the front leg to loft this over long-on

Impressive figures from Ajmal considering he bowled six overs in Powerplays, and against set batsmen, but I'd rather use him as a wicket-taker as opposed to one who is used to contain batsmen once things have gone wrong

End of over 48 (14 runs) Sri Lanka 266/4 (RR: 5.54)
NLTC Perera    15* (8b 2x4 1x6)      Saeed Ajmal    10-0-49-1

48.4

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 run, full toss on the pads, Dilshan misses out, and gets just a leg-bye

Dilshan is struggling there. On his haunches after every run, and not moving well. It has been a sapping effort

48.5

Umar Gul to Perera, SIX, boy that's exciting. Batsman with no fear, bowler looking to put him in his place with a bouncer. Perera is surprised, his head falls away, he is not looking at it, but the bat comes up with perfect timing, as he has timed this for six over square leg

48.6

Umar Gul to Perera, no run, slower ball, Perera slashes at it, and misses by a long way

End of over 49 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 275/4 (RR: 5.61)

Last over coming up. Sri Lanka will be happy with this effort. Batting is not Pakistan's strong suit. Nobody has ever chased more than 240 against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. Tanvir goes round the stumps

49.1

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, 1 run, another run-out missed. Slower ball, pulled straight to square leg, Dilshan gives up half way through, but Azhar Ali misses again

49.2

Sohail Tanvir to Perera, 1 run, slower again, pulled to long-on for one

49.3

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, 1 leg bye, yorker from wide of the crease, dug out for a single

49.4

Sohail Tanvir to Perera, no run, wide yorker... well bowled. He knows Perera is backing away, and bowls this yorker away from his reach but inside that white line

49.5

Sohail Tanvir to Perera, 1 run, slower ball on off, he pulls with head falling away, gets a single to deep midwicket

49.6

Sohail Tanvir to Dilshan, 1 run, full toss on the pads, inside edge onto the pads, and he gets just a single - a good final over with just five off

6.05pm It is not often that Dilshan bats through an innings, and ends up with just 119, that too out of a total of 280. But this was exactly what Sri Lanka needed against a quality attack on a testing pitch, and especially coming off a 130-run effort. Dilshan was determined today, waiting for the bad balls, and respecting the conditions, bowling and the format. The others revolved around him, and they seem to have enough on the board now. Remember no team has ever successfully chased more than 246 against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, and Pakistan batting is not exceptionally strong. Join us for the reply in half an hour

End of over 50 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 280/4

NLTC Perera    24* (14b 2x4 2x6)      Umar Gul    9-0-58-0
