Pakistan in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 5th ODI

Sri Lanka v Pakistan

Sri Lanka won by 2 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)

More interesting changes. Imaran Farhat has replaced the in-form Azhar Ali at the top, and not Mohammad Hafeez who is picking ducks faster than Walt Disney did

2.25pm As we wait for the start of the game, Kanishkaa informs us, "Dilhara Fernando does a leisurely jog around the boundary. Must be wondering what it takes to get a game." I hope he doesn't overstep

And Abdul Aziz asks what has age got to do with it: "In response to Shehroze...Abdul Razzaq rarely is given the chance he deserves. In 20 of the 40 games he has played in the past 3 years he has been given 5 or less overs only. In the games where he has more than 5 overs, his record reads 26.16 per wicket, economy 4.22."

2.20pm Ramiz Raja, meanwhile, has been in rare, near-poetic form on Twitter today. Look at these: "My youth was taken over by Zia's martial law, my kids youth by Musharaf's My burhapa & my kids jawani by democratic load shedding.DARK AGES"

Very Ali Azmat-like from Ramiz - "Mainoo bijli de, maino pani de [Give me electricity, give me water]"

"How long are we going to dwell over Razzaq? He's past it. He's not the bowler he was and definitely not a fielder to depend on. Its time to move on and give Hammad Azam a proper chance." Shehroze, meanwhile, has an eye on the future

2.10pm First reactions on Pakistan's changes: Waqar Younis is not impressed at all. "How can you drop the one and only Saeed Ajmal who is the man who wins you matches?" It would be true generally, but Misbah has used him in a perplexing manner: he bowls six overs in Powerplays, another two or three at the death, and thus bowls flat and flatter, fast and faster. Ajmal has been forced to use his energies at containment rather than striking wickets

And what about Younis? Is that a statement for the future too? Sri Lanka has not been a happy place for him. I remember, in 2009, how despite his best efforts he was the losing captain in two Tests, thanks to inexplicable collapses. Is Misbah, very much a part of those collapses, feeling the same pain now?

"How much are Pakistan missing a seaming all-rounder. Razzaq isn't picked. Absolute nonsense from the selectors? No balance to this team," Neil Mulligan picks out the elephant not in the room

Misbah-ul-Haq has won the toss, and Pakistan will bat first. He says 250 is a good total. Two interesting changes. Younis Khan is "rested due to his form" (Misbah will make a good politician, looking at his skill for not using the dreaded word, but sending the message across). Saeed Ajmal is rested too, making way for Mohammad Sami. Imarn Farhat comes in in place of Younis

Sri Lanka have made a change too: Jeevan Mendis replaces Sjaeewa Weerakoon, who came across as an honest trier but not a strike bowler

1.40pm Hello all. This is the last ODI of the series. Sri Lanka can't lose the series now. Pakistan, who came back from behind to level the T20 series, will be looking to do the same with ODIs too. One eye will of course be on the sky. It rained in Colombo this morning, but stopped about an hour ago. The covers are off too. Toss is due in 20 minutes

0.1

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, Malinga starts with an accurate outswinger, shaping into Farhat's pads. Worked away to square leg

Just the one wide slip in. Strange

0.2

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, full outswinger, shaping in towards middle, driven to mid-on. Not the sweetest of connections

Kanishkaa informs: "Very thin crowd at the moment even though tickets for the 3rd ODI can be re-used today"

0.3

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, half-volley, just outside off, a better drive, but straight to mid-off

0.4

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, short of a length, rising towards the chest, fended with an open face, keeps it down

"People need to relax. Its ok to rest Saeed Ajmal for a game. And Sri Lanka havent really been struggling on spin in this series. Its the fast bowlers that troubled them in the 1st one day and Sami did a fairly good job in it." Ahmed Zawar might have a point

0.5

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, tucks him up with one into the ribs, Farhat uses the wrists to keep it down, and play it to square leg

0.6

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, yorker, on off, nearly slips through, but the think inside edge saves him

End of over 1 (maiden) Pakistan 0/0 (RR: 0.00)
Imran Farhat    0* (6b)      SL Malinga    1-1-0-0
Mohammad Hafeez    0* (0b)

"Imran Farhat? Where's Nasir Jamshed? Did he not score that run-a-ball hundred against India in the Asia Cup? He and Hafeez were a really great opening combination!" Ahmad asks another pertinent question. Hafeez is on a hat-trick of ducks

1.1

Kulasekara to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, big inswinger, and nearly the hat-tricks. Beats him comprehensively, but it is swinging down the leg side

1.2

Kulasekara to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, another inswinger, Hafeez is off the mark with a nice clip off the pads. Past square leg. That should relieve Hafeez

1.3

Kulasekara to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 leg bye, Hafeez walks down to counter the inswing, is beaten by it, but takes a leg-bye

"Nasir Jamesh is out with a broken finger. Sohail Tanvir was his last minute replacement." Thanks Atta. I should have known that

1.4

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, length ball, middle and off, punched down the ground to mid-off

1.5

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, full, outside off, swinging away, left alone

1.6

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, Beauty. Almost a fast offbreak. Pitches on a length, in front of leg, makes him play. Farhat makes allowance for movement, but this one surprises him, and beats the edge

End of over 2 (3 runs) Pakistan 3/0 (RR: 1.50)
Imran Farhat    0* (9b)      KMDN Kulasekara    1-0-2-0
Mohammad Hafeez    2* (3b)      SL Malinga    1-1-0-0

2.1

Malinga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, outswinger, on a length, in front of off, defended

2.2

Malinga to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, another outswinger, slight width available, steered away for a single to third man

2.3

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, dug in short, outside off, left alone

2.4

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, outswinger, full and straight, driven nicely, but straight to mid-on

2.5

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, length ball, on off, played with an open face, to point

2.6

Malinga to Imran Farhat, 1 run, yorker, middle and leg, dug out by Farhat

"Have patience guys we are on our way for the game with3rd ODI tickets. Caught up in the snail pace traffic." Petrine Alexa reassures us there will be a crowd in

End of over 3 (2 runs) Pakistan 5/0 (RR: 1.66)
Imran Farhat    1* (13b)      SL Malinga    2-1-2-0
Mohammad Hafeez    3* (5b)      KMDN Kulasekara    1-0-2-0

3.1

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, short of a length, moving away after pitching middle and off, and Farhat goes after it. A little late too. Beaten

3.2

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, 1 run, short of a length, middle and off, pushed between cover and mid-off for a single

3.3

Kulasekara to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, nice inswinger, shaping in towards off, defended by Hafeez

3.4

Kulasekara to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, short of a length, nipping in, worked away for a single to deep square

3.5

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, 1 run, short of a length, not too wide, Farhat gets close to the line and cuts it to square third man

One slip and one leg slip in

3.6

Kulasekara to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, Hafeez picks one that holds its line outside off, and steers it wide of third man for a couple

End of over 4 (5 runs) Pakistan 10/0 (RR: 2.50)
Mohammad Hafeez    6* (8b)      KMDN Kulasekara    2-0-7-0
Imran Farhat    3* (16b)      SL Malinga    2-1-2-0

4.1

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, slower ball, 123ks, half-volley outside off, but driven straight to cover

4.2

Malinga to Imran Farhat, no run, dug in short, outside off, sways out of its line

4.3

Malinga to Imran Farhat, FOUR, Uppish drive, but there is no extra cover. Farhat drives at a length ball outside off, doesn't bother about keeping it down and it goes between mid-off and cover

Farhat seems to have chipped his bat. Replacements coming on

4.4

Malinga to Imran Farhat, FOUR, Shot. That's something we have not seen from Pakistan so far in the series. Shots played in anger. SHots that will make the bowler think. Superb square-drive here. Short of a length, outside off, he moves across, gets close to the line, and drives with an open face. Between point and cover-point it goes

4.5

Malinga to Imran Farhat, 1 run, overcompensates this time, and pitches up on the pads. Farhat will be disappointed he has found fine leg with that flick

"Actually feel for Imran Farhat. He's quickly becoming the most hated man in the team (as far as the general public is concerned) because of allegations of nepotism in the selection committee and vested interests. Nothing short of a hundred will satisfy millions of his detractors!" Reza speaks of another elephant in the room

4.6

Malinga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, short of a length, shaping away from off, defended by Hafeez

End of over 5 (9 runs) Pakistan 19/0 (RR: 3.80)
Mohammad Hafeez    6* (9b)      SL Malinga    3-1-11-0
Imran Farhat    12* (21b 2x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    2-0-7-0

5.1

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, inswinger, starts in front of off, left alone

5.2

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, 3 runs, just short of a length, and he rocks back to pull it past midwicket. Intent being shown here

5.3

Kulasekara to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, this is the one that holds its line outside off, and beats the cut shot

5.4

Kulasekara to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, left alone outside off this time

5.5

Kulasekara to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, walks down the wicket, is beaten by an inswinger, but he has got outside the line

5.6

Kulasekara to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, Hafeez's horror tour continues. He has played completely down the wrong line. Falling over too. No feet movement. Pitched up just outside off, Hafeez drives, away from the body, presenting the gate. The inswinger bursts through that gate, and hits the off stump

Mohammad Hafeez b Kulasekara 6 (28m 13b 0x4 0x6) SR: 46.15

End of over 6 (3 runs) Pakistan 22/1 (RR: 3.66)
     KMDN Kulasekara    3-0-10-1
Imran Farhat    15* (23b 2x4)      SL Malinga    3-1-11-0

Azhar Ali is in now, but Farhat is on strike. Mathews replaces Malinga who has bowled his three overs with the new ball. That's what he usually does

6.1

Mathews to Imran Farhat, no run, length ball on off, defended towards cover

6.2

Mathews to Imran Farhat, no run, another length ball, 129ks, no movement, defended in front of off

6.3

Mathews to Imran Farhat, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, steered away for a single

6.4

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, now the outswinger, outside off, leaving him, left alone

6.5

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, another outswinger, wider still, left alone again

6.6

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, length ball, into the pads, defended towards mid-on

End of over 7 (1 run) Pakistan 23/1 (RR: 3.28)
Azhar Ali    0* (3b)      AD Mathews    1-0-1-0
Imran Farhat    16* (26b 2x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    3-0-10-1

"Where's Dilshan - The bolwer? I have observed that he has been used less frequently once he opted out of captaincy." Nisarg, he seems to have a hairline fracture on one of his fingers. And don't forget, he opened the bowling in two of the finals in Australia

7.1

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, FOUR, short, moving away, hence the width, and smashed away wide of point. Aggressive stuff from Farhat

7.2

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, fuller now, in front of off, defended to cover

7.3

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, FOUR, lovely flick now. Length ball, on the pads, uses his wrists to beat square leg with the shot, and it is timed well enough to go for four

7.4

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, pitched up outside off, swinging away, left alone

7.5

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, short of a length, middle and leg, pushed back to him

7.6

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, FOUR, third boundary of the over. That's what attacking batting can do, make bowlers bowl loose deliveries. Kula has been trying to not give him any room, and has strayed on the pads again. Glanced fine, fine of fine leg

End of over 8 (12 runs) Pakistan 35/1 (RR: 4.37)
Imran Farhat    28* (32b 5x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    4-0-22-1
Azhar Ali    0* (3b)      AD Mathews    1-0-1-0

8.1

Mathews to Azhar Ali, FOUR, Azhar into the act too. Full, into the pads, Azhar moves forward, and wrists it wide of mid-on

Younis Khan, who could easily be sulking inside the change room, is in the dugout, and applauds that shot

8.2

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, left alone outside off as Mathews tries to keep this away from his pads

8.3

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, wide outside off again, left alone as it holds its line

8.4

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, short of a length, wide again, left alone

8.5

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, left alone outside off again

"It is always handy to have a left handed batsman in your lineup to mess up bowlers line. Pakistan were missing that till now with only Sohail Tanvir who bats left handed but does so at number 9." That's a strong point, Atta

8.6

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, another delivery wide outside off, and Azhar lets it go again. One fruitful shot followed by five leaves. Now that's what a tree looks like

End of over 9 (4 runs) Pakistan 39/1 (RR: 4.33)
Azhar Ali    4* (9b 1x4)      AD Mathews    2-0-5-0
Imran Farhat    28* (32b 5x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    4-0-22-1

9.1

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, length ball on the pads, finds square leg with the flick, and is sent back after instinctively setting off for a suicidal single. Thirmanne hits direct, but Farhat is back in time

9.2

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, length ball, on the pads again, pushed to mid-on

9.3

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, short of a length, just outside off, punched to mid-off

Goes round the stumps

9.4

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, and the change of angle almost works. A beauty too. Short of a length, outside off, Farhat plays for the angle, but the ball holds its line, and beats the edge

9.5

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, this one comes in with the angle, defended with an open face

9.6

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, another ripper from Kula. This is on a length, close to off, and Farhat has to play. He plays for the angle, but it straightens off, and beats the edge. Lovely comeback from Kula after having been hit for three fours in his previous over. Good on Mahela for persisting with him

End of over 10 (maiden) Pakistan 39/1 (RR: 3.90)
Imran Farhat    28* (38b 5x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    5-1-22-1
Azhar Ali    4* (9b 1x4)      AD Mathews    2-0-5-0

10.1

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, that's a sixth straight leave from Azhar. He has to do something. Can't let Mathews keep bowling the seventh-eighth stump line outside off

10.2

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, Azhar now jumps out of the crease, and flashes at this outside off. Beaten

Azhar needs a gear in between the first and fifth

10.3

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, length ball, outside off, angling in, driven to mid-off

10.4

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, walks down the track, Mathews keeps on a length outside off, defended again

10.5

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, another leave outside off. This is wide enough to play a regulation cut, but Azhar doesn't

10.6

Mathews to Azhar Ali, FOUR, he finally goes after a wide delivery, driving it on the up, through extra cover, in front of sweeper-cover. So last 12 balls from Mathews to Azhar: boundaries off the first and last, and 10 dots in between

End of over 11 (4 runs) Pakistan 43/1 (RR: 3.90)
Azhar Ali    8* (15b 2x4)      AD Mathews    3-0-9-0
Imran Farhat    28* (38b 5x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    5-1-22-1

Kula continues round the stumps

11.1

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, FOUR, Farhat disturbs the rhythm of the bowler again. Slightly straighter than the three previous deliveries, so Farhat feels safer attacking. Clears the front leg, and lofts him over mid-on. One bounce for four

11.2

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, outside off again, and defended again

11.3

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, FOUR, Farhat goes again, and benefits again. Short, into the body, and he pulls. This gets a bit big on him, and even though Farhat is pulling in front of square, he goes ahead with it. And it goes over mid-on again

11.4

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, FOUR, width outside off. There is a sweeper-cover in place, but he can't do much. Short of a length, wide, he punches it, using his wrists to place it square of the man in the deep. Chandimal's dive there is not enough

11.5

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, no run, holds its line outside off, and Farhat doesn't go after it

Goes back over the stumps

11.6

Kulasekara to Imran Farhat, 1 run, Farhat punches again, but this time straight to sweeper-cover. A rare single now. Thirty-two runs have been scored since the last time they ran a run

End of over 12 (13 runs) Pakistan 56/1 (RR: 4.66)
Imran Farhat    41* (44b 8x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    6-1-35-1
Azhar Ali    8* (15b 2x4)      AD Mathews    3-0-9-0

12.1

Mathews to Imran Farhat, no run, short of a length, tucks him up with the leg-stump line, hits the thigh pad

12.2

Mathews to Imran Farhat, FOUR, too straight now. Farhat has set in the fear of the cut, and Sri Lanka are dead scared of bowling outside off. This is pitched outside leg, and Farhat moves inside the line, and glances this fine for another four

12.3

Mathews to Imran Farhat, 1 run, on the pads again, worked away for an easy single

Waqar Younis talks of Farhat's father-in-law, who was a member of the selection committee. He says now that Mohammad Illyas is not a selector, it seems to have lifted some pressure off Farhat. He is referring to all the not-so-subtle talk of nepotism

12.4

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, left alone outside off

12.5

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, well wide again, and left alone again

12.6

Mathews to Azhar Ali, no run, bowls six inches inside the wide line again, and Azhar shoulders arms again

End of over 13 (5 runs) Pakistan 61/1 (RR: 4.69)
Azhar Ali    8* (18b 2x4)      AD Mathews    4-0-14-0
Imran Farhat    46* (47b 9x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    6-1-35-1

Under pressure as a bowling unit for the first time in the series, Sri Lanka turn to TM Dilshan, the middle finger of whose left hand is taped

13.1

Dilshan to Imran Farhat, no run, pitched up, on off, pushed back to him

13.2

Dilshan to Imran Farhat, no run, near run-out. Thick edge towards point, Azhar wants the run, it's his call, but there is no single available. Dilshan hardly had any time to get back and collect the throw from Mendis. Azhar survives

13.3

Dilshan to Imran Farhat, 1 run, driven to long-off for one

13.4

Dilshan to Azhar Ali, 1 run, pitched up on the pads, worked away to deep square for one

13.5

Dilshan to Imran Farhat, 1 run, flighted just outside off, pushed between point and cover for a single

13.6

Dilshan to Azhar Ali, 1 run, short, into the pads, worked away for an easy single

End of over 14 (4 runs) Pakistan 65/1 (RR: 4.64)
Azhar Ali    10* (20b 2x4)      TM Dilshan    1-0-4-0
Imran Farhat    48* (51b 9x4)      AD Mathews    4-0-14-0

14.1

Mathews to Azhar Ali, 1 run, Azhar walks down the track, gets a leading edge to a length ball outside off, and it flies between cover and point

14.2

Mathews to Imran Farhat, 1 run, length ball, on the pads, worked away for an easy single

14.3

Mathews to Azhar Ali, 1 run, loopy little length ball outside off, 123ks, driven wide of mid-on for one

14.4

Mathews to Imran Farhat, no run, short of a length, outside off, opens the face to play to point

14.5

Mathews to Imran Farhat, no run, looks to run this down to third man for the single that would get his fifty. A little extra bounce, and he is beaten

14.6

Mathews to Imran Farhat, no run, length ball, on off, placed wide of point, and this time Azhar refuses a legitimate single. Imran is five yards down the pitch, with his arm raised in question

End of over 15 (3 runs) Pakistan 68/1 (RR: 4.53)
Imran Farhat    49* (55b 9x4)      AD Mathews    5-0-17-0
Azhar Ali    12* (22b 2x4)      TM Dilshan    1-0-4-0

Round the stumps to Azhar

15.1

Dilshan to Azhar Ali, no run, length ball, pitched outside leg, Azhar early into the flick, and misses

15.2

Dilshan to Azhar Ali, 1 run, similar delivery, and this time he has placed it wide of midwicket for one

15.3

Dilshan to Imran Farhat, 1 run, full, on the pads, worked away to deep square leg to bring up his fifty. Farhat looks up towards the sky, pumps his fist. Younis Khan is the first man to applaud. What an inspired selection Farhat's has been. Just what Pakistan needed

15.4

Dilshan to Azhar Ali, no run, full, on the pads, played back to Dilshan

15.5

Dilshan to Azhar Ali, no run, shimmies down the track, and plays the resultant half-volley back to Dilshan

15.6

Dilshan to Azhar Ali, no run, length ball, on the pads, can't place it wide of midwicket

Perera comes back. One slip in

16.1

16.2

Perera to Azhar Ali, 1 run, length ball, wide outside off, driven to sweeper-cover for one

16.3

Perera to Imran Farhat, 1 run, drop and run. Well done. Length ball, on off, played with soft hands, towards mid-off, and he steals a single

16.4

Perera to Azhar Ali, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, worked wide of mid-on again for a single. This is better stuff from Pak

16.5

Perera to Imran Farhat, 1 run, another tip and run. Pakistan have had something good to drink. Fourth quick single in the over. Dropped towards point, and the soft hands help them. Farhat applauds Ali's response

16.6

Perera to Azhar Ali, 1 run, chips down the track, gets inside the line of the ball, works it away for a single to deep square

End of over 17 (6 runs) Pakistan 76/1 (RR: 4.47)

17.1

No bowling Powerplay yet. Pakistan have, for the first time, forced Sri Lanka to look for Plan B

17.2

Dilshan to Imran Farhat, 1 run, short, widish, cut away for a single

17.3

Dilshan to Azhar Ali, 1 run, length ball, on the pads, driven to long-on for another single

17.4

Dilshan to Imran Farhat, 1 run, short again, punched to long-off for one

17.5

Dilshan to Azhar Ali, 1 run, length, on the pads, worked to the left of short fine for a single

17.6

Dilshan to Imran Farhat, 1 run, short of a length, into the pads, worked around the corner for another single

Twelve straight singles. Never thought I'd be saying the same in a Pakistan innings

End of over 18 (6 runs) Pakistan 82/1 (RR: 4.55)

Bowling PP now taken. One wide slip in place

18.1

Perera to Imran Farhat, OUT, against the run of play. Farhat has thrown it away. Have Pakistan let Sri Lanka back in? First ball of the Powerplay, short and straight, and Farhat has pulled it about 10 feet to the right of the only man deep on the leg side. Chandimal accepts it gleefully at deep midwicket. Perera's touch of gold continues. Nevertheless a good innings from Farhat

Imran Farhat c Chandimal b Perera 56 (80m 63b 9x4 0x6) SR: 88.88

Will Pakistan promote Umar Akmal to keep the momentum going? No. It's Asad Shafiq again. Akmal could do with more responsibility. It does wonders sometimes

18.2

Perera to Azhar Ali, FOUR, short and wide, and this time Azhar doesn't let it go harmlessly away. He cuts this to the left of point, and to the right of third man

18.3

Perera to Azhar Ali, no run, similar ball, and he lets it go this time

18.4

Perera to Azhar Ali, 1 wide, that's too wide. Azhar need not play at it. First wide of the innings

18.4

Perera to Azhar Ali, 1 run, nice shot, driven to sweeper-cover for one

Shafiq to face for the first time

18.5

Perera to Asad Shafiq, no run, length ball, outside off, defended off the front foot

Mendis to Umar Akmal, 1 run, Akmal down the wicket, not to the pitch of it, and hence pushes it to long-off for just a single

40.3

Mendis to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, short and flat, pulled to long-on for a single

40.4

Mendis to Umar Akmal, no run, short of a length, tries to run it down fine, but there is no pace to work with. Ends up paying it to point

40.5

Mendis to Umar Akmal, no run, Akmal gives him the charge, Mendis bowls full and down leg to cramp him up. Inside edge into the pad

40.6

Mendis to Umar Akmal, no run, tries the cut again, but again the lack of pace means he can't go finer than point

Good over. Just three off

End of over 41 (3 runs) Pakistan 194/4 (RR: 4.73)

Perera has four overs to go. There is a possibility he might not bowl all of them. He is back now

41.1

Perera to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, guided to third man for one

"Its a good idea they have introduced reserve day for the last 2 matches. It never rains when you carry your raincoat." So true, Kalai. That's why I never carry one

41.2

Perera to Umar Akmal, SIX, Bang. Akmal has been lining this up for a long time, but at times he has not got the pace, at others the length. Now he gets a perfect delivery. On a length, middle and leg, gentle pace, and he is down on a knee to slog him well over deep midwicket

41.3

Perera to Umar Akmal, no run, slightly shorter, on off, defended back to him

41.4

Perera to Umar Akmal, no run, length ball again, just outside off, Akmal goes for another slog, but the ball stays low, and beats him

We now have a deep midwicket. Third man comes up

41.5

Perera to Umar Akmal, 1 run, short of as length, outside off, takes a single to short third man

41.6

Perera to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, length ball, pushed to mid-on for a single

End of over 42 (9 runs) Pakistan 203/4 (RR: 4.83)

Mendis gets another. Surely Perera won't bowl all 10

42.1

Mendis to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, short, flat, punched down to long-off for one

42.2

Mendis to Umar Akmal, 1 run, googly, Akmal charges and swings nonetheless, and the mis-hit means it doesn't carry to deep midwicket

42.3

Mendis to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, short, outside off, pulled down to long-on for one

42.4

Mendis to Umar Akmal, no run, flighted on middle and leg, solid forward-defensive from Akmal

42.5

Mendis to Umar Akmal, 1 run, picks the google, sweeps this to deep square for one

42.6

Mendis to Misbah-ul-Haq, OUT, slog-sweep, and caught at deep midwicket. Mendis has bowled really well. Doesn't give them any pace to work with. Bowled at 73ks, Misbah has to wait and wait, and doesn't get the timing right. Caught at deep midwicket

Perera to Umar Akmal, 1 run, short of a length, on off, punched to long-off for one

Shahid Afridi has scored 12 golden ducks. Behind only Murali and Akram. This stat courtesy Ten Cricket

43.2

Perera to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, no golden duck here. Punches this down to long-off for a single. All along the ground

43.3

Perera to Umar Akmal, SIX, Akmal is lining up Perera's length balls at 125ks. Slogs again, gets a lot of height, but clears deep midwicket with ease

43.4

Perera to Umar Akmal, 1 run, another length ball, driven down to long-on now for a single

43.5

Perera to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, poor delivery. Down the leg side with fine leg up. Afridi plays it smartly, glancing it fine, fine of the man

43.6

Perera to Shahid Afridi, no run, short of a length, outside off, punched away, but finds the straight extra cover

End of over 44 (13 runs) Pakistan 220/5 (RR: 5.00)

Mendis gets another over. Mahela playing with fire here, but Mendis has done well so far

44.1

Mendis to Umar Akmal, 1 run, googly, picked early, and worked to leg for a single

44.2

Mendis to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, legbreak, starts from outside leg, helped away for another single

44.3

Mendis to Umar Akmal, no run, well bowled again, doesn't give him the driving or slogging length. Nor the room. Pushed to cover

44.4

Mendis to Umar Akmal, 1 run, follows it up with a googly, worked away for a single

44.5

Mendis to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, flat, into the pads, just the single to deep midwicket

44.6

Mendis to Umar Akmal, 1 run, again short of a driving length, and fuller than what can be pulled. Gets a single to long-on. Another good over from Mendis. Will he get another?

Malinga has three overs to go. If he has to bowl them all, he needs to come back now. And come back he does

45.1

Malinga to Umar Akmal, no run, length ball, on off, 136ks, driven back to him

45.2

Malinga to Umar Akmal, no run, slower ball outside off, he tries to run it down, but misses. He has picked it, but is trying to run it too fine

45.3

Malinga to Umar Akmal, 1 run, yorker, dug out, the ball is on the pitch, but Afridi calls him through for one. Akmal reaches fifty. Does the sajda. Kisses the badge on the helmet. Acknowledges the response from his team-mates

45.4

Malinga to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, slower ball, outside off, played with an open face, gets a single to deep point

45.5

Malinga to Umar Akmal, no run, picks the slower ball again, plays the slog-sweep, but can't beat midwicket

45.6

Malinga to Umar Akmal, no run, well bowled. Inswinging yorker, in front of middle and leg, dug out. Lovely over. Just two off

End of over 46 (2 runs) Pakistan 227/5 (RR: 4.93)

Kula is back

If Mendis gets another over, that'll mean Kula won't bowl his all 10. Pakistan have got 33 off their last five. Not bad from Sri Lanka. Given their history of collapses, not bad from Pakistan either

46.1

Kulasekara to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, Afridi wanted to his this one back to the hotel, but gets an inside edge onto the boot for one

46.2

Kulasekara to Umar Akmal, no run, slower ball, he picks it again, but t never arrives and beats the cut shot. That's bowled at 94ks

46.3

Kulasekara to Umar Akmal, 1 run, another slower ball, 95ks, no room either, punched to point for one

46.4

Kulasekara to Shahid Afridi, OUT, full toss, and Afridi has picked out deep midwicket to perfection. This is a poor result for Pakistan. This is exactly the delivery you want at death, but Afridi has hit it off the lowest fourth of the bat, and Mahela doesn't have to move an inch at deep midwicket

Shahid Afridi c Jayawardene b Kulasekara 9 (15m 8b 1x4 0x6) SR: 112.50

The last 2.4 overs have been good for Sri Lanka: nine runs and a wicket. Tanvir is promoted ahead of Sarfraz. Sensible move. But Akmal is on strike

46.5

Kulasekara to Umar Akmal, 1 run, on the pads again, worked away for a single

46.6

Kulasekara to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, length ball, outside off, nicely driven to sweeper-cover for a single

End of over 47 (4 runs) Pakistan 231/6 (RR: 4.91)
Sohail Tanvir    1* (1b)      KMDN Kulasekara    9-1-50-2
Umar Akmal    52* (54b 5x4 2x6)      SL Malinga    8-1-39-0

47.1

Malinga to Sohail Tanvir, no run, short, just outside off, 143ks, wants to guide it fine with an open face but makes no contact

47.2

Malinga to Sohail Tanvir, FOUR, the rare loose delivery. On a length, on the pads, and he has flicked it over square leg, never mind the slower delivery

Fine leg comes back. Square leg goes back

47.3

Malinga to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, another slower ball, outside off this time, run down to third man for one

47.4

Malinga to Umar Akmal, no run, well bowled, he guesses Akmal will back away, and bowls full and wide, just inside the wide guide line. Akmal can't reach it

47.5

Malinga to Umar Akmal, no run, full, yorker, outside off, Akmal wants to slog it to leg, and misses it completely

47.6

Malinga to Umar Akmal, 1 wide, another wide length ball to counter Akmal's movement away from the stump, but this time he has gone a touch too wide, and is called

47.6

Malinga to Umar Akmal, no run, well bowled. Akmal is one-dimensional, and proving easy to outdo at the death. Any bull full and outside off is beating him because he is looking to slog everything over midwicket. Smart bowling from Malinga

End of over 48 (6 runs) Pakistan 237/6 (RR: 4.93)

Kula to bowl out

48.1

Kulasekara to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, full, on off, driven to long-on for one

48.2

Kulasekara to Umar Akmal, no run, charges at him, Kula bowls the slower ball, and despite all his power he has hit it back to Kula

Six off the last 16 balls for Akmal

48.3

Kulasekara to Umar Akmal, 1 run, another slower ball, 93ks, no room, gets a single to point

48.4

Kulasekara to Sohail Tanvir, no run, yorker outside off, hit back to Kulasekara. This is a smart finish from Sri Lanka so far

48.5

Kulasekara to Sohail Tanvir, no run, another yorker outside off, a low full toss really, hit down the ground, Kula leaps in his follow-through, and fields overhead

48.6

Kulasekara to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, low full toss again, wide outside off, driven down to long-on

Good finish from Kula. Just three off his last over

End of over 49 (3 runs) Pakistan 240/6 (RR: 4.89)
Sohail Tanvir    8* (8b 1x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    10-1-53-2

This is so un-Pakistan-like. They are batting first, they have wickets in hand, but they are struggling to go at more than a run a ball at the death. Just 15 off the last four

49.1

Malinga to Sohail Tanvir, 2 runs, slower ball, too good for Tanvir, gets a leading edge, but Tharanga has dropped a sitter at long-off. two extra runs conceded

49.2

Malinga to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, full and outside off, gets a single to extra cover

49.3

Malinga to Umar Akmal, 1 run, full and wide, Akmal has backed away, and hardly reaches it, gets a single to cover

49.4

Malinga to Sohail Tanvir, OUT, another leading edge from Tanvir, this time Tharanga runs in towards the 30-yard circle and takes the catch

Sohail Tanvir c Tharanga b Malinga 11 (14m 11b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Akmal has been one-dimensional. Staying back, deep in the crease, backing away a little, cutting out the off side, and Sri Lanka have exposed him there. He has managed just eight off the last 18 balls he has faced. Not good enough for a batsman who has almost all the shots in the book. A frustrating finish for Pakistan. Can they get to 250 off these last two balls?

49.5

Malinga to Umar Akmal, 1 run, more premeditation. He is moving across this time, Malinga bowls a wide yorker again, and he somehow gets some bat on it to take a single

Akmal will finish just nine off the last 19 balls he has faced. Gul to face the last ball

49.6

Malinga to Umar Gul, 2 runs, wide length ball, and unlike Akmal, Gul goes over the off side, and gets a couple over point. Thirimanne, who has been superb in the field, gives chase from sweeper-cover, and makes a diving save at the boundary

6.20pm We are 20 minutes over time. Some work for Chris Broad there. And we have seen authorities have got stricter and stricter with time. An interesting innings then, which has resulted in an in-between total. Imran Farhat proved to be an inspired choice at the top, scoring a quick 56, making Sri Lanka bowlers think. However, he couldn't carry the advantage through. Jeevan Mendis proved to be an equally inspired pick, especially given his fielding at point in Dilshan's absence. He bowled nine overs for 30 runs and two wickets. Umar Akmal threatened to run away with a typical Pakistani finish in the end, taking apart the medium pace of Perera, but the spin of Mendis and finishing skills of Mainga and Kula pulled him back. In the end Pakistan managed less than six an over over the last 15 overs, Akmal scored nine off the last 19 deliveries he played. What results is a beautifully set-up chase. Pakistan have the bowling to defend this, but Sri Lanka's batting is decidedly superior to Pakistan's. Join us soon for the chase
