Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

Bad news even before we start. Adnan Akmal is off for an x-ray on the ring finger of his left hand, and Taufeeq Umar is keeping wicket. In Dilshan's absence, here is Chandimal opening with Paranavitana who has had a mediocre series. Pakistan will want to apply pressure here. Umar Gul to open. Three slips, a gully, a short leg

0.1

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, 1 run, short of a length, moving in towards the pads, worked away for an easy single

Four slips, no gully and a short leg

0.2

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, more outswing for Gul, left alone outside off

0.3

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, another outswinger, but full and wide, and left alone

0.4

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, closer to off, but still not close enough to make him play

0.5

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, short of a length, wide outside off, left alone again. Gul yet to warm up

Taufel has a word with Gul because he is encroaching onto the danger area. No official warning, though

0.6

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, short of a length, outside off, pushed to cover-point

End of over 1 (1 run) Sri Lanka 1/0
LD Chandimal    0* (5b)      Umar Gul    1-0-1-0
NT Paranavitana    1* (1b)

Junaid Khan gets the new ball ahead of Sami. Bowled really well at SSC. Both Junaid and Cheema have proved to be excellent dead-wicket bowlers

1.1

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, no run, starts on a length, just outside off, left alone

1.2

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, no run, length ball outside off, left alone again

1.3

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, no run, a peach. Short of a length, Para plays for the angle, but this one leaves him a little. Luck to not edge it

Three slips, a gully, short leg

1.4

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, 1 run, this one moves in towards the stumps, and he drops and runs, gets a single towards cover-point

1.5

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, no run, nearly edged. Length ball, on off, Chandimal pushes at it, and is beaten by the angle

1.6

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, 1 run, Chandimal off the mark. Length ball, on leg, angling towards off, pushed wide of cover

End of over 2 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 3/0
LD Chandimal    1* (7b)      Junaid Khan    1-0-2-0
NT Paranavitana    2* (5b)      Umar Gul    1-0-1-0

Thirteen overs to go. We are definitely going into overtime here

2.1

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, short of a length, wide again, and left alone again

Gul yet to bowl a good ball

2.2

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, first good ball and they appeal for a catch. Short of a length, nipping in from just outside off, caught at short leg, but off the thigh pad

2.3

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, this one moves away, but again starts wide outside off, and is left alone

2.4

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, length ball, angling in towards top of off, defended off the front foot

2.5

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, short of a length, on off, pushed back to mid-off

2.6

Umar Gul to Chandimal, 1 run, length ball, on off, drives away from the body, gets a thick inside edge for a single

End of over 3 (1 run) Sri Lanka 4/0
LD Chandimal    2* (13b)      Umar Gul    2-0-2-0
NT Paranavitana    2* (5b)      Junaid Khan    1-0-2-0

3.1

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, 1 run, length ball, on the pads, takes the easy single

3.2

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, no run, huge shout for lbw, but I think he has got an inside edge. Short of a length, seaming in from outside off, goes past the inside edge, so no edge, but it has hit him on the thigh. Can't give them

3.3

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, no run, left alone outside off, swings after passing the stumps, done well by the makeshift keeper Taufeeq Umar

3.4

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, no run, another good take from Taufeeq. This one seams in, deflects off the pad, and takes a full-length dive from Taufeeq who appeals too. More in excitement, I think

3.5

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, no run, short of a length, nipping in again, gets an inside edge onto the pad, but it dies down. Nearly a replay of his SSC dismissal

3.6

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, no run, lovely bowling. He has peppered him with movement in all over long, and gets this one to go away. Everything right about this delivery except that it doesn't take the edge

End of over 4 (1 run) Sri Lanka 5/0
NT Paranavitana    2* (10b)      Junaid Khan    2-0-3-0
LD Chandimal    3* (14b)      Umar Gul    2-0-2-0

4.1

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, length ball outside off, left alone for Taufeeq to collect it waist high

4.2

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, short of a length, angling in, pushed to mid-on

4.3

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, short of a length, outside off, doesn't need to play at it

4.4

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, goes wide of the crease, short of a length, in towards off, defended well

4.5

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, length ball, on off, Chandimal is well forward in defence

4.6

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, that's a special delivery. Short of a length, just outside off, making him play for the angle, then leaving him. Chandimal is lucky he has not edged it

End of over 5 (maiden) Sri Lanka 5/0
LD Chandimal    3* (20b)      Umar Gul    3-1-2-0
NT Paranavitana    2* (10b)      Junaid Khan    2-0-3-0

5.1

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, no run, length ball, on off, defended square on the off side

5.2

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, 1 run, short of a length, nipping back in, he gets an inside edge onto the pad, but gets a single to get away from the strike

Goes round the stumps already. He does well from that angle

5.3

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, no run, already some shape away against the angle, nicely push-driven to cover - 142ks

5.4

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, no run, this one nips back in, beats the bat, but hits him on the thigh

5.5

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, no run, Wasim Akram, are you watching this?. Short of a length, on off, has to play at it, and then the ball seams away, and misses the edge. How do you play them? You have to be really good to edge them

5.6

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, no run, O boy. This is lovely bowling. Highly skilled. Pitches this up, drawing him forward, and then again it moves against the angle. Misses the edge. Top-class bowling

End of over 6 (1 run) Sri Lanka 6/0
LD Chandimal    3* (24b)      Junaid Khan    3-0-4-0
NT Paranavitana    3* (12b)      Umar Gul    3-1-2-0

6.1

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, 1 run, too straight, allows Para the soft single and a ticket to watch the action from the other end

6.2

Umar Gul to Chandimal, no run, length ball outside off, left alone, and the first miss by Taufeeq. He wouldn't want to do the same when they do manage an edge

6.3

Umar Gul to Chandimal, FOUR, short of a length, on off, gets a little big on him, takes a thick edge, wide of gully for four

It might be time for some Sami from this end

6.4

Umar Gul to Chandimal, 1 run, length ball, into the pads, clipped away in the air but well short of long leg

6.5

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, no run, appeal for lbw as this one swings in a touch, but there is a thick inside edge to save him

6.6

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, 1 run, length ball on off, drops and runs, cover not alert enough to it

End of over 7 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 13/0
NT Paranavitana    5* (15b)      Umar Gul    4-1-9-0
LD Chandimal    8* (27b 1x4)      Junaid Khan    3-0-4-0

7.1

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, 1 run, swinging in, takes the thick inside edge to long leg

7.2

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, no run, nearly. This angle is troubling Chandimal. Short of a length, outisde off, holding its line, Chandi follows it, and is beaten

7.3

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, OUT, he gets his man. Smart bowling. He shows he has not just the skill but the brain too. After getting balls to leave Chandimal from round the stumps, he gets one to go with the angle. Chandimal nowhere close it. Hit on the roll, on the crease, in front of middle and leg. Steve Davis takes his time before raising his finger. Clipping leg, I would say

LD Chandimal lbw b Junaid Khan 8 (33m 29b 1x4 0x6) SR: 27.58

So a tough innings for Chandi comes to an end. Not sure he has ever opened in serious cricket, and this was against a highly skilled bowler. Speaking of highly skilled, here is Kumar Sangakkara

7.4

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, half shout first ball as this one seams in, but is sliding down leg

7.5

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, huge huge shout, and my word, that is close. Close to off, seaming in, hits him on the roll in front of off. That's plumb for me. But I think Steve Davis went with not out, because of the two sounds that came form the ball hitting both the pads

7.6

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, OUT, never mind the lbw, this one has damaged the wood work. Sanga registers his first duck against Pakistan. This is a superb spell from Junaid. Similar delivery, but this time Sanga is stretching away from the body, and the ball squeezes in through the gap after pitching on a length, just outside off

KC Sangakkara b Junaid Khan 0 (3m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

End of over 8 (1 run) Sri Lanka 14/2
     Junaid Khan    4-0-5-2
NT Paranavitana    6* (16b)      Umar Gul    4-1-9-0

Mahela Jayawardene comes in to face the music, and right now it will sound to him as ugly as that horn. Para to face, though

8.1

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, no run, it's a shout a minute here. And isn't Para lucky to survive? Short of a length, no extra bounce, swinging in from off, caught on the back foot, on the crease. Saved by height, I suppose

8.2

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, 4 byes, extravagant swing down the leg side, and Taufeeq couldn't have done much with that

8.3

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, no run, short of a length, outside off, nipping back in, left alone

8.4

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, FOUR, wide half-volley, and well done by Para to not stay stuck in defensive mindset. Takes toll, and drives it through extra cover

8.5

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, no run, that inside edge. Length ball, on off, swinging back, but the inside edge saves him again

8.6

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, no run, another inside edge. This time he drags this full delivery from just outside off, but the pads are there as the second line of defence

End of over 9 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 22/2
NT Paranavitana    10* (22b 1x4)      Umar Gul    5-1-13-0
DPMD Jayawardene    0* (0b)      Junaid Khan    4-0-5-2

"I love test cricket....why don't we have wickets like this in all the test matches...boy am i loving it!" You can say that again, Farhan.

Mahela to face Junaid from round the stumps. I am sure he won't be padding up here

9.1

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, and nearly a wicket. Mahela follows this outside off, the ball holds its line, beats the bat

9.2

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, 2 runs, Class is class. Junaid tries the one-two trick, seams this in, and coolly Mahela clips this wide of mid-on

9.3

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short of a length, well wide of of, Mahela has no problem leaving it alone

9.4

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, wide again, left alone by Jaya again

9.5

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, top delivery. Short of a length, closer to off. Surely this one is angled too much to seam away? No sir, this holds its line too. Mahela's bat is straight. A lesser batsman would have got a leading edge

9.6

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, 2 runs, wide length ball, driven through cover

End of over 10 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 26/2
DPMD Jayawardene    4* (6b)      Junaid Khan    5-0-9-2
NT Paranavitana    10* (22b 1x4)      Umar Gul    5-1-13-0

"Aamir in Asia: 3 tests,,avg:43.5,, Junaid in Asia: 7 tests,,avg:24.86" Ali Zafara, Junaid and Cheema are two of the best bowlers on unresponsive pitches. No Sami still

10.1

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, 1 run, Gul gives him the width, but cut not wide enough of point, and gets a single

10.2

Umar Gul to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, pushed wide of cover for one

10.3

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, no run, length ball, middle and leg, swinging in a little, Para's bat comes down in time

10.4

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, 1 run, half shout again, but Para has got the bat down in time again, taking a single to fine leg

10.5

Umar Gul to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, length ball, middle and leg, pushed to mid-on, Para runs off to nowhere, just about makes it back

10.6

Umar Gul to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short of a length, on off, defended solidly

End of over 11 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 29/2
DPMD Jayawardene    5* (9b)      Umar Gul    6-1-16-0
NT Paranavitana    12* (25b 1x4)      Junaid Khan    5-0-9-2

Four more overs to go. I will be upset if Sami doesn't bowl two of those

11.1

Junaid Khan to Paranavitana, 1 run, seaming in towards middle and leg, clipped away for a single

Stays over the stumps to Jayawardene

11.2

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, length ball, on the pads, pushed to mid-on

I like how Mahela's bat face has stayed straight throughout, no matter how far they stray. Back round the stumps now

11.3

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, holds its line after pitching off, takes the edge, but soft hands mean it dies immediately, and flies between slips and gully

11.4

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, 4 byes, this one seams in from middle and off, and Tuafeeq is nowhere close to it

11.5

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short of a length, outside off, left alone

11.6

Junaid Khan to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, full, swinging in, pushed wide of mid-on for a single

Sami fields that ball, and he keeps it

End of over 12 (10 runs) Sri Lanka 39/2
DPMD Jayawardene    10* (14b 1x4)      Junaid Khan    6-0-15-2
NT Paranavitana    13* (26b 1x4)      Umar Gul    6-1-16-0

Time for Mohammad Sami to well and truly get into his 14th Test comeback. He'll get a maximum of two overs tonight

12.1

Mohammad Sami to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 wide, the Sami start. All's well with the world. Short, wide, moving away, called a wide

12.1

Mohammad Sami to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, length ball, outswinger, MJ plays in front of off, with soft hands, gets a single before midwicket can get in

Three slips, a gully, a short leg

12.2

Mohammad Sami to Paranavitana, no run, length ball, outside off, 141ks, left alone, collected in front of chest

12.3

Mohammad Sami to Paranavitana, no run, angling away outside off, left alone

12.4

Mohammad Sami to Paranavitana, no run, short of a length, seaming away, most of the movement, though, is posthumous. Taufeeq struggles with the collection

12.5

Mohammad Sami to Paranavitana, no run, short of a length, just outside off, left alone

12.6

Mohammad Sami to Paranavitana, no run, left alone outside off, 141ks, and good carry, Taufeeq fumbles again

End of over 13 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 41/2
NT Paranavitana    13* (31b 1x4)      Mohammad Sami    1-0-2-0
DPMD Jayawardene    11* (15b 1x4)      Junaid Khan    6-0-15-2

Saeed Ajmal replaces Junaid Khan for the last over from this end

13.1

Saeed Ajmal to DPMD Jayawardene, 2 byes, offbreak well down leg, difficult for Taufeeq to collect these

13.2

Saeed Ajmal to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, offbreak again, turning in towards off, defended by MJ

13.3

Saeed Ajmal to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, flatter offbreak, MJ stays back to defend

A slip and a short leg. MJ ties his shoe laces. Will that make sure this is the last over? One minute to go, I think

13.4

Saeed Ajmal to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, full, on off, defended back to him

13.5

Saeed Ajmal to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, length ball, into the pads, turned away around the corner

Round the stumps. A slip, a leg gully, a short leg in

13.6

Saeed Ajmal to Paranavitana, no run, full, on off, defended solidly. Para wants to walk off, Davis waits for Taufel to walk to the bowler's end, and the clock has not yet turned over. So we will have another over. All those tricks come to nought

End of over 14 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 44/2
NT Paranavitana    13* (32b 1x4)      Saeed Ajmal    1-0-1-0
DPMD Jayawardene    12* (20b 1x4)      Mohammad Sami    1-0-2-0

So Sami to bowl the last over

14.1

Mohammad Sami to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short, outside off, left alone

14.2

Mohammad Sami to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, full, on the pads, shaping towards middle, defended to square leg

14.3

Mohammad Sami to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, sharp outswinger, on a length, just outside off, hits the bat hard, but goes right into the ground

14.4

Mohammad Sami to DPMD Jayawardene, OUT, Mohammad Sami, we have been expecting you. Whatmore smiling inside the players' gallery. Not for the first time he slips in the yorker from out of nowhere. MJ didn't want to play this over, and now he will have to wait for a full innings to play another. Yorker on middle and leg, past the inside edge, onto the toe. Mahela immediately turns his back towards the umpire, as if to suggest he is not bothered about the appeal. Nice try, says Simon Taufel before raising his finger

DPMD Jayawardene lbw b Mohammad Sami 12 (30m 24b 1x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Mohammad Sami will begin the day's events. He has two deliveries left in his second over, after he dismissed Mahela Jayawardene with a yorker with what became the final delivery of day one.

Thilan Samaraweera is the new batsman at No. 5 and he will be on strike. Tharanga Paranavitana at the non-striker's end. Three slips in place, and a gully.

Day 3, 9.40 am Good morning, I'm a little late but I have good news. The weather is rather fair in Pallekele and play will start on time, in five minutes. They will aim to play 98.2 overs today, weather permitting, but the forecast seems good.

***

3.10 pm That's all, folks. Play has been called off for the second day. They will attempt to start at 9.45 am on the third day, fifteen minutes early. On the brighter side, because 13 wickets fell on the first day, a result is quite possible in this Test, provided the weather over the next three days isn't ghastly.

Thank you for your emails and your patience today. I'll be back tomorrow, and hopefully with better news. Cheers.

3.05 pm The umpires have made an appearance, they are meeting with the curator near the pavilion, where there is little danger of drowning. The rain has stopped but it is still cloudy.

2.45 pm More of the same in Pallekele. Raindrops keep falling on their heads. An appropriate time for this verse then,

"So I just did me some talkin' to the sun, And I said I didn't like the way he got things done, Sleepin' on the job, Those raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin."

James: "Coffee half full? No, 2 cups downed already. Probably accounts for the ridiculous optimism."

2.30 pm "One day's rain won't necessarily ruin the chances of a result in this match. In fact, based on the first day's play, it could make the game more exciting, by bringing time into the equation," says James, whose cup of coffee is half full this morning.

"How do comments appear in between cricket commentary." Like this, Umair.

2.15 pm The carrot's gone. It's drizzling again and getting heavier.

Hasan: "Perhaps on rainy days, the game could be decided by playing book cricket! Remember that anyone from the school days?" Did you dog-ear the six and four pages, as well?

At least one Sri Lankan team is playing cricket. The A team is in South Africa and faring fairly well. Dimuth Karunaratne's just scored 150 but that match looks like it's going to be drawn.

2.05 pm Here's another carrot. "The rain has stopped and it has brightened up," says Kanishkaa. No sign yet of the umpires. No movement from the ground staff yet either.

Ammar: "Mother Nature is trolling all of us!"

1.50 pm Kanishkaa says that the umpires will decide at 2.00 pm. Brace yourselves folks.

Sajid: "I'm just 5 minutes away from Pallekele. I have given up hope of seeing any play today. I think all people here should take my word for it & go do something more productive ..."

1.30 pm "The way this pitch is playing, I don't think it makes a difference if we lose a day," says Abdul. "If Pakistan secure a lead, and pile on 150 odd runs, Sri Lanka won't survive the 4th innings. If Sri Lanka take the lead, Pakistan won't survive their 2nd innings. Either way, the match won't go to day 5." Assuming we don't lose too much time to the weather over the next few days. It's still raining by the way.

Here's a good one from Aafaq: "Sami overs usually take long to complete but this one is getting really long."

1.00 pm I don't have any good news. It's raining hard in Pallekele and it now seems like a matter of time before the weather forces an abandonment. Unless something changes dramatically, like in fairy tales.

Faridoon: "Imagine what effect this must have on the players. All revved up to play cricket and then 4 hours of rain drain. I wonder what they get up to, play video games, watch videos of their old innings, get extra strategy sessions in with coach or just lounge around, sip tea, eat snacks. Can anyone venture a guess to what they think their favorite players do?" I'd like to believe that Jonty Rhodes used to catch flies with his fingers to improve his reflexes.

Gav: "@Faridoon: Probably the same thing I do. Play minecraft. And then hope the cricket doesn't resume."

12.30 pm Right, it's pelting down again. Farhad: "I think Sri Lanka are going to be in trouble after play resumes because three fast bowlers are looking very dangerous, pitch and conditions will also help them." That's looking like a pipe dream for the moment.

12.05 pm "Stopped again. Sun just came out. That sort of day man," says Kanishkaa. Well don't read too much into it. Nothing to do but to keep calm and carry on.

The groundstaff just came out to check the covers. I'm assuming they found lots of water. This is what the ground looked like a while ago.

11.55 am It's started drizzling again. If you didn't know already, it's going to be that sort of day.

11.45 am Do you like carrots? Because here's one. "Rain has stopped ... it's a bit brighter," says Kanishkaa from Pallekele. "The hills are starting to appear. But we need some proper sunshine urgently. The covers are waterlogged."

"Ahhhhh! I was so desperately relying on the a decent first session of cricket to get me through the Monday morning blues at work ..." says Fayyez. A sure shot way to avoid Monday-morning blues is to work on Sunday.

11.40 am Status quo in Pallekele. "It's interesting how for the first time in this Test series, we get a pitch that isn't a motorway and the first day of the match turns out to be the most enthralling of the series," says AM. More wickets always makes for more interesting viewing. Better pitches, with balance between bat and ball, will solve most of cricket's issues.

11.15 am "Any idea on when are we going to start?" asks Ali. Well I'd say that if you are putting off important things in hope that the cricket will start soon, don't. Relentless rain in Pallekele.

Shehzan: "This relentless rain and wait kill me. How excitedly I got a burger and other edibles from a nearby canteen for my breakfast intending to enjoy the match but I had to finish my breakfast as I couldn't wait anymore!!!" A burger for breakfast, seriously?

Babar: "It's only Pakistan where it is not raining I guess, and unfortunately it's only Pakistan where International cricket is not being played."

Shaafay: "Man, it's 2 am in Canada and I stayed up to watch Pakistan put on a good show, when will this rain stop? I hate time zones.."

11.00 am "Another downpour," says Kanishkaa from Pallekele. "Chances are bleak."

Dr. Tam: "It looks like that the only cricketing place where it's not raining is here in Darwin where cricket season is at its full bloom. Even Tim Paine has come to play the club cricket with Tracey Village all the way from Tasmania."

10.45 am "Rain will help Pak seamers more," says Mohsin. "This ball is just 15 overs old. And moisture and dampness on the pitch will cause more swing and seam Specially to Junaid and Gul."

Dr. Tam: "@Mohsin: This is what Mahela thought yesterday after winning the toss on a wet morning but Pak still managed to post a reasonable total."

10.30 am Eusha: "Looking at 13 wickets in the first day, I am positive that we would not need 5 days for a result. So I'm not worried about rain causing loss of play." Perhaps, but here's hoping for play soon. Still no good news from Pallekele, I'm afraid.

Adam: "Forecast doesn't look good; thunderstorms to continue for the next few days."

Bismilliah: "I agree with Mohsin in that rain will help Pakistan bowlers. But looking at the forecast, I have this pessimistic feeling that the rain will ultimately have the final say in the result of this test i.e. a draw and deprive Pakistan of a deserved 1-1 series result."

10.00 am Mohammad Sami should have been completing his over now, after dismissing Mahela Jayawardene with a searing yorker to end the first day. Instead, we have covers protecting most of the ground from the rain that is quite heavy at the moment.

9.35 am Good morning and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the second day's play in Pallekele. I'm afraid I'm a bearer of bad news. After a full day's play on day 1, an enthralling day's play in fact, we have rain this morning. The scheduled start is 25 minutes away but that's almost certain to be delayed.

The good news is that because so many wickets - 13 - fell on the first day, the Test has progressed quickly. So even if some time is lost, there's plenty left for a result.

***

That will also be stumps. Pakistan have staged a good comeback after being 56 for 4. It's been a lovely day of Test cricket with the ball seaming around. Sri Lanka made an inspired choice by picking Thisara Perera, and also opening the bowling with him. Perera responded with four top-order wickets. Shafiq fought hard for Pakistan, taking them past 200 with a composed 75. And then a highly skilled show with the ball by Pakistan. Junaid Khan was exceptional, and Sami provided a nice finishing touch. With Sri Lanka 44 for 3 and two of their best batsmen back, this game is in the balance, and will make for exciting viewing tomorrow too. This is Sidharth Monga, saying goodbye for now. 18.5

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, FOUR, he's lucky this time, had done a good job leaving it go the previous ball but was done in by the sharp inward movement this time, tried to drop his hands there and it darted back in to take the back of the bat and fly over the slips for a boundary

Ishaan: "SriLankan batsmen got it wrong. The best defense in this ground is offense. Mahela had it right until he faced a brilliant yoker. it was a good ball. not the fault of the strategy . The way these 2 are going will only add up score board pressure. they should move their feet and score some runs, singles would be ideal. Being THIS defensive won't help them on this sunny day, on a grassy pitch."
