Sri Lanka 320 and 282 (Sangakkara 59, Jayawardene 54, Wahab 3-76, Ajmal 3-89) need three wickets to beat Pakistan 332 and 127 for 7 (Sarfraz 38*, Herath 4-46 )

It is hard to imagine what Pakistan would have felt in the morning when Saeed Ajmal got one to kick up from length on Kumar Sangakkara and had him caught at short leg. There would have been the elation of seeing the back of one of the world's most prized wickets, out for just five runs on the day, after a threatening 107-stand. There would have been a resurgence in belief that Pakistan could, somehow, sneak up on Sri Lanka, cause an upset to square the series and disrupt Mahela Jayawardene's farewell party plans. Somewhere, there would have been a worry too. About Rangana Herath, who had run through their batting order to pick up nine wickets in the first innings on a flat pitch.

The approach of the Pakistan openers as they set out to chase 271 suggested they wanted to take whatever they could get off the seamers, before the inevitable arrived. Ahmed Shehzad and Khurram Manzoor possibly underestimated the quicks and did not hold their strokes back, sometimes playing and missing. Both were dismissed by Dhammika Prasad before Herath came in to bowl. And his first ball turned and bounced almost chest high for the wicketkeeper, leaving no doubt that the batsmen had little chance. As expected, Herath drove away any thoughts of a Sharjah-like chase by breaking the back of Pakistan batting - Azhar Ali, Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan - within his first six overs.

A lot depended on the three batsmen if Pakistan were to put up a fight. Azhar was the hero of the chase in Sharjah while Younis and Misbah have excellent records in fourth innings, both boasting of averages in excess of 50. But Azhar did not have a chance against one that turned away and took the outside to Jayawardene, neither did Misbah, who, too, was snapped up at first slip again, taking Jayawardene's catch-tally to 205. Younis had seen the dismissals from the other end and the turn would have played on his mind, but he was done in by the arm-ball, trapped lbw as he missed a sweep.

Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed have had success against spin during this tour and were nimble-footed during a 55-run sixth-wicket stand that prevented total capitulation. But Shafiq missed one as he stepped out to give Herath his 22nd wicket in the series. With effectively two wickets remaining - Junaid Khan was ruled out - Pakistan were left facing a big defeat.

Run-scoring had been difficult all day and there were more animated reactions from the bowlers than scoring shots. Under grey skies, the three-man Pakistan attack worked tirelessly and found generous help from the SSC surface. Ajmal, who bowled unchanged through the day, dismissed Sangakkara in his second over of the day. He followed it up with Mahela Jayawardene's wicket - the 10th time he dismissed the batsman in Tests - in his next over before beating Lahiru Thirimanne with a doosra to collect three wickets in a 46-over slog. Wahab Riaz also picked up three wickets with the old ball.

There was no way past Angelo Mathews' bat though. His unbeaten 43 included plenty of nudges and expansive shots hardly made an appearance - he hit just two boundaries. But his runs - and his partnerships with Niroshan Dickwella and Prasad - were critical in the context of the match as Sri Lanka lost last eight wickets for 96 runs to post 282.

Thus, the role of the Jayawardene-Sangakkara stand had been extremely important. It was the 19th time the two had added more than 100 in Tests, making them the second-most prolific pair behind Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

The Sunday crowd that had settled in early for Jayawardene's last Test innings rose to its feet in the second over of the day as the batsman swept Ajmal to the fine-leg boundary and reached his 50th Test half-century. It turned out to be the penultimate scoring stroke in Jayawardene's 11814-run wide Test canvas as the batsman soon miscued a lofted shot to mid-on off Ajmal.

He walked back acknowledging the applause from all, leaving the future of Sri Lanka's batting, and of the current Test, with the new generation. That Sangakkara also waved his bat to the stands on his walk back to the pavilion raised speculation of it being his last Test appearance in Sri Lanka. As the two left in quick succession, batting suddenly turned into a difficult job.

I don't think Khurram Manzoor is good enough to play test cricket. Pakistan have a much better options than him in the likes of Taufeeq Umar and Fawad Alam. Pakistan should have one or two left handers in the batting line. With all the right handers we saw that they struggled against a very good left arm spinner.

A fitting end to an era. Not only was he himself one of the modern greats, his partnerships with Sanga were second to none.

please kick out thirimanne, give chance to Dickwella and tharanga in the ODIs,and welagedara looks useless too despite that fact that he got the sarfraz wicket, bowlers for ODI should be malinga,kulasekara,lakmal,herath,mendis..do not include prasad, welagedara or eranga for ODI,they are even more useless in ODI

Time and again SL has influenced in creating SL specialist overseas players who has only performed well against SL. Examples like Dhoni,Ashraful in the past and Azahr Ali, Junaid Khan and Safraz Ahamed in present. I wonder what is the secret.

Asad, misbah, khurrum and myk have really disappointed. Azhar and shahzad haven't been good either. Myk scored big in first innings on flat track after getting 6 lives. Misbah and khurrum have failed . Shafiq has no place in the side. They should have an all rounder at that position. Shafiq averages 27 in his last 10 test matches. 5 of those in uae/lanka.7 of those against srilanka or Zimbabwe. At number 6/7 He comes to bat hiding under myk and misbsh. This is ridiculous . Why not bring in uakmal, sohaib, taufeeq , sami aslanm or inamulhaq.

Sri Lanka have done magnificently well during the course of this test match with a positive approach in all departments of the game to have the strong Pakistan team on the hop. Hopefully the weather gods will be kind today to ensure that SL can wrap up the series comfortably. Herath continues to be Sri Lanka's best strike bowler and has reaped a good harvest in the recent past with his dedication and commitment which others should follow and bring in the desired results in the future. We also salute Sanga & Mahela for their continued and dedicated contribution to Sri Lanka cricket and will miss their services in the future. Only Mathews seems to have taken on the responsibility of steering the team through many a crisis amongst the younger players and it is high time the others prove that they are good enough to be playing for Sri Lanka in the future.

Posted by   on (August 18, 2014, 3:55 GMT)

Thanks MJ for your great services to SL. Win will be a nice note to your test retirement. It is hard task pak to charge the situation. Some concern area for SL in middle order batting as well. Good luck both teams for odi series.

Posted by cric1965 on (August 18, 2014, 3:52 GMT)

Dickwella is better than Thirimanna. Should give Kusal perera a chance in test team.

Posted by katch47 on (August 18, 2014, 3:48 GMT)

Should Thririmanne be given more chances? I think SL has to move on because he has been given enough chances already. He struggled against pace in fast tracks, he struggled against spin in slow tracks, his presence in the middle gives negative influence so the opposition can induce pressure to Mathews and the rest of the lower half of the batting list

Posted by ksquared on (August 18, 2014, 3:29 GMT)

The main problem with Pakistan is their batting. It's been their Achilles' heel now for quite a long time plus the Sri Lankan batsmen have played Ajmal a lot better and Rehman has been a passenger in the team. Ajmal may have doosras, theesras and god knows what else but Herath has shown that flight, guile and a bit of turn could take you a long way if you are smart enough.

Posted by   on (August 18, 2014, 3:16 GMT)

@CricketingStargazer, Sri Lanka were favourites against South Africa and are a good team, that result was actually disappointing considering Sri Lanka has dominated South Africa at home. I guess they are very much under rated

Posted by osteo on (August 18, 2014, 3:03 GMT)

come on Pakistan what are u doing same team lost test and odi to sa in home ground

Posted by   on (August 18, 2014, 2:46 GMT)

Yunus has scored his quota of runs in 1st inning of the 1st test so dont expect anything from him for the next few series. Can't understand why they keep Umar Akmal in the team such a waste of talent...

Posted by   on (August 18, 2014, 2:41 GMT)

I found its really pathetic to see many criticized Sri Lankan pitches as flat tracks for last 4 test matches (obviously not on the 5th day but on 1, 2, 3rd days) while 3 matches will definitely have results and the remained was decided by the rains which reduced 20-25 overs while SA managed to a draw with their last 2 wickets. I really don't understand why some readers just need to criticize Sri Lankan pitches and imply that runs scored there have no values, either they are extremely jealous of Sri Lankan cricket or have no knowledge on the cricket matches playing around now or in the past.

Posted by   on (August 18, 2014, 0:46 GMT)

i dont understand is khuram manzoor the only opner they have he is the worse batsman i have ever seen in my life shaan masood is mutch better or fawad alam and one more thing i wana mension here why cant our tale anders atleast block the bal pakistan tale anders batting averge is even lower then afghanistan i should say

Posted by   on (August 18, 2014, 0:45 GMT)

Guys don't be in a hurry, until Safraz is out Pakistan is not lost. India was leading 1-0 in the series and ..... . Better for Sri Lanka to take the wickets as early as possible. Mathew should attack starting from the 1st ball.

Posted by Sinhaya on (August 18, 2014, 0:42 GMT)

@Priyantha Gunaratna, well but the impact of feeling one specialist bowler down in cricket is really high. I agree with you, but sudden injuries like the ones suffered by Eranga and Junaid Khan require quick solutions. At the moment, Pakistan are down to 10 men which is not really fair. I guess in cricket it is way too complicated if a substitute is allowed to bat or bowl.

Posted by Bobby_Fox on (August 18, 2014, 0:27 GMT)

Please drop thiri and bring back chandi...he is way far better than thiri. even chandi scored 2 centuries and couple of half centuries in his tour game against eng and NZ A team this month. he deserves the place.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 20:39 GMT)

Herath is the only difference between the two teams besides Sri-Lanka having better fielding.

Posted by CricketingStargazer on (August 17, 2014, 20:31 GMT)

Maybe Sri Lanka are just a bit better than we all had thought before the start of the summer? Since beating England, they have made South Africa work hard to hang on - just - for a series victory and are now on the point of whitewashing Pakistan.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 20:26 GMT)

@Big_Chikka

Look at what SL did to a struggling Eng side. That same side lost to India in the first test at Lords. That side has significantly improved. SL would've lost had the faced this side.

Posted by zzby on (August 17, 2014, 20:00 GMT)

Pakistan played well and being unlucky due to Junaid injury otherwise they would have been chasing 170. I think the criticism by fan is just anger the only thing they would have done positive in the future is to take Zulfiqar baba and Atif Maqbool baba in tests both are in mid 30's.

Posted by shaalim on (August 17, 2014, 19:37 GMT)

Can any of selector justify Why Fawad Alam is not in the squad.... Just because he is talented and committed.... I am 100% sure that Sarfaraz will not get value too after that series.... PCB and selectors are combination of people who loved journey only... not committed with the team and merit.

Posted by wapuser on (August 17, 2014, 18:56 GMT)

I think pak should say by by toAjmal and Rehman baba and search fresh young spinners. look at Herath 9 wikts. why not ajmal take. pak players always think themselves big herooos but thy are xeeeeros.

Posted by fr600 on (August 17, 2014, 18:48 GMT)

Saw this coming, SL is much stronger than PAK.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 18:42 GMT)

Idris Shafi - i do understand you're anger and frustration but keep in mind only very few teams beat SL in last 8 to 10 months, apart from Shaja and Galle test lost we beat England in England won the WC, won the Asiia Cup and almost dominated the world cricket in this year or so. Also do understand Pakistan dont get many matches and that's one reason they struggle, give them enough matches and they will be a tough team to beat, players like Younis deserve more, much much more

Posted by Big_Chikka on (August 17, 2014, 18:23 GMT)

i rate this SL team look at what england did to india, and then think of what sri lanka did. this is a tough side, not the most attractive cricket, but a damn fine side.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 18:01 GMT)

Wish an other century by Sarfaraz Ahmed. Sarfaraz wish U all the best.

Posted by dasithds on (August 17, 2014, 18:00 GMT)

I can understand when the Indian fans are mad at India for playing horrible cricket (it happens too often, however, I don't condone pelting players' houses) while they get far too many good opportunities to play test cricket. Pakistan on the other hand do not. Them losing this series is quite understandable. Yes, their 2nd inning displays have been bad but, after finding Safraz, I think they've plugged the biggest leak they had -- a decent wk-batman. They truly provide some entertaining cricket, along with the Proteas. For a Sri Lankan fan, I appreciated both the cricket and the good-heartedness of the players in their send-off for Mahela. And I am really glad to see a test series without the usual off field shenanigans.

Posted by samcric7 on (August 17, 2014, 17:33 GMT)

Well played SL, Herath made the difference in both the innings . @ tommytuckerSuffa - comments disappeared on 5th day at Galle, no comments since 2nd day at SSC . Busy commenting on Eng- Ind match . Well played mate!

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 17:06 GMT)

SL needs 2 balls to all out Pakistan to win series 2-0. Credit should be given to Herath for winning both the matches. Congrats Herath and SL

It seems that Safrass the only one who can stand against victory of Sri Lanka.

Posted by Htc-Android on (August 17, 2014, 16:33 GMT)

We may win or lose this test. but one thing I will be happy about is I have watched Sanga and Mahela bat together for one last time. Thanks to Mahela for all the great memories you gave us during your days and best of luck to you in your future.

Posted by Blade-Runner on (August 17, 2014, 16:16 GMT)

@ Sheikasif; Dude, its not a flat track. It offers a lot of spin and bounce. Learn to give credits the opposition. The gulf between these two teams is a big one. So, 2-0 was always expected.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 16:10 GMT)

well played guys..if there was eranga we could have finish this game today.. Chandimal is the only 1 who can fill mahela's void at least half! Thirimanne needed to be dropped and Kithruwan also has to go! replace those two by Danushka and dimuth or ashen

Posted by KavindaSalgado on (August 17, 2014, 16:04 GMT)

@Lenard_Fernando: I agree, in SL we definitely need a proper change in our VISION before MISSION... to give due credit where it belongs... irrespective of personal preferences or glamorous hype of some selectively privileged.! Unfortunately, most of our hierarchy in cricket, media & some SL fans who are still emerged in this mess would always see through this partial lenses & invert reality according to their mindset! This is really counterproductive to Future.

Rangana Herath (36 yrs) has 3-4 yrs remaining as a spinner, depending on fitness. But, Upul Tharanga (29 yrs) as an experienced Opening batsmen who had already scored over 5000r in ODIs, has plenty of playing years (at least 9 yrs more) to come in his career! When you consider the future of SL Cricket beyond Sanga, Mahela & Dil... obviously you have to admit Tharanga is the only certain choice among all those youngsters tried out so far! Chandi, Thiri, Dimuth, Kaushal, Kusal, Vithanage etc. nowhere near him in STATS or ACTS!

Posted by Sheikasif on (August 17, 2014, 15:57 GMT)

Only Pak has the capability to fold in a flat track. Well done boys. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha....................

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 15:54 GMT)

i do not blame the entire team is lack of test matches and international odi,s. they play may be one test and one day series a year. i believe if they play like india south africa or england with busy schedule they can be a top team.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 15:46 GMT)

Sinhaya: The substitute use rules as in instant games like soccer and Rugby cannot be applied in a long duration game like cricket. Firstly all teams playing test cricket must ensure that they are not only fielding the best XI but also the fittest XI. Then regarding unexpected injuries, teams should ensure that they have certain safeguards within the playing XI to cover up that like having a fifth bowler. If substitutes are allowed to bat and ball, that situation can be exploited. When a team looses a bowler, if the bowling strength is not the biggest concern team may substitute a batsman who can bowl a bit and exploit the situation by using batting skills of the substitute.

Mahela's gesture towards the Nalanda OBA tent , the first of his gestures when he got out today, shows he never forgot his roots and his undiminished appreciation great.....absolutely a fantastic player! Good luck in your future endeavors mahela and thank you immensely for the memories!

is sanga going to retire in December?

Posted by Sinhaya on (August 17, 2014, 14:40 GMT)

Herath you beauty. I am sure you have another 2 years of cricket in you. Hope Sanga too will play test cricket only for another 2 years. I was worried by his reaction after he was dismissed today.

Well Sri Lanka has now won 4 tests this year and should we win this tomorrow, it will be 5 test wins for the year after a 9 month test match drought. Well our batting is a worry. Dickwella has proven himself with the gloves. Tharanga and Kaushal Silva are ok as openers. Thirimanne must be dropped. Need Vithanage and Dhanushka Gunathilake in the test team when we tour NZ in December.

Bowling well, we are missing Lakmal for sure. Cant have Welegedara at all in the team. Worry is that Lakmal, Eranga and Pradeep are too injury prone. Would like to see Prasad take all 3 remaining Pakistani wickets tomorrow. Important not to be complacent as Safraz Ahmed is in prime form.

Posted by Sinhaya on (August 17, 2014, 14:32 GMT)

I know it hurts to see Pakistan lose 2-0 from the perspective of a Pakistani fan. Well high time ICC changes test match rules to allow substitutes to bowl. See the loss Pakistan suffered due to Junaid Khan's absense? Like in soccer and rugby union where substitutes are allowed, it should be made possible in cricket. Had Junaid bowled, Sri Lanka might have been all out for 220. Well going on that basis, had Eranga bowled against SA in Galle, SA may have scored less too.

I thought Misbah Ul Haq my favorite ever Pakistani cricketer will score but sad he did not. Hope he will get a chance to impress against Aussies. Well Aussie bowling as we know is far better than SL so hope Pakistan can work on their batting in time for the UAE series.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 14:26 GMT)

Mahela J, thank you very much for brilliant service rendered to Sri Lankan Cricket Fans. All the best for the future. Still got work to do in ODI....

Sanga, the way you waved the bat around after being dismissed...is not a good gesture...cos you got easily 02 years of Test's, Sri Lanka could not afford to lose the two GREATS in the same season...noway....must try to reach Sachin T's record.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 14:25 GMT)

While keeping in mind "No match is lost until it is won", this will most likely be a 2-0 series win for SL. I feel sorry for Pakistan but credit should go to SL team ably led by Angelo Mathews for an excellent show. The pending man of the series Rangana Herath thoroughly out played his opposite number Saeed Ajmal. Ajmal lacked support from his fellow spinning partner Raheman. The loss of Junaid was a big blow but these things do happen in test cricket and it is advisable that all test teams have a 5th bowling option in their ranks. Sri Lanka suffered a similar fate in the Galle Test against South Africa when Eranga had to leave the field after bowling only 9 overs. Other than Herath, Angelo, Sanga and Mahela were main contributors while the openers also played their part. Dickwella seems to have cemented wicket keeper batsman place while Dilruwan can be expected to get better with time. Pacemen did not have conditions to their favour, therefore it is not fair to judge them.

Posted by 4_Best_Cricket on (August 17, 2014, 14:20 GMT)

Wake up Pakistan...what's going on? Pak players need to practice a lot playing the spin. Admire Herath for what he has done for his team and exposed Pak batting weaknesses. Does Pakistan even deserve a Test nation status with such a batting on the sub-continent? I think Pak players need to learn from Sarfaraz and if you substract Sarfaraz contribution, you see where Pak really stands. Sarfaraz should try to retain the strike as much as possible and fight the lost battle. You never know the tide may turn the other way as cricket is such a funny and unbelievable game. Good luck to Mahela!

kind plea to thirimanne-please resign without spoiling our middle order as selectors will never drop you however you perfrom,at least you can be hero that way like chandi did in the t20 WC

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 14:00 GMT)

Well done Mahela and Sanga to bring competitive second innings score. I do not think SL can depend on young players they are still struggling. Compare to Schin Thandukas retirement Mahela can play another two years. Mathew has matured enough to play according to the demand and he is going to be a another great caption for SL. There are players went on retirement and come back and still playing. I think until SL find suitable replacement for Sanga and Mahela , they should continue playing test cricket. VC Threemana still not showing any improvement his batting technique. SL should try D.Karunarathna at lower order. Young wicket keeper batsmen Dikwella is a good replacement for Chandimal.

Posted by getsetgopk on (August 17, 2014, 13:56 GMT)

What more do you get from a three man attack, 105 runs and 8 wickets. Hugely impressed by Wahab Riaz, I think he is quickly getting into international cricket very nicely, hard fought by the three bowlers but only if our batsmen could show even one tenth the courage our three bowlers showed, it would have been a different story. A great test match nonetheless.

Guys! Game out of our hands so be a sportsmen and give standing ovation to one of classy test cricketer from the Emerald Island. Not much to say about team Pakistan because it was on the cards, Sri Lanka learnt their lesson from the Sharjah test and improved themselves from that point, on the contrary what Pakistan took from their that victory? #Shame Let there be merit in team selection and not on #PlayerRatings

Everyone wanted Younis Khan even in one day team. Now tell me what is he doing in the team? Its the consecutive third inning he failed. He can only score on flat tracks, he is too old to play cricket.

It is a fitting farewell for MJ, thanks to the massive efforts of a couple of players Rangana Herath & Upul Tharanga.

Left-arm spinner Herath's record making 9 + 4 = 13 wickets harvest & Upul Tharanga's superb 92 + 45= 137 Runs "Top-of-the-List" batting contribution on that difficult run-making wicket made it possible. Only Sarfraz Ahmed managed 4 runs more (141 runs) on that hard-to-score deck.!

Unfortunately, unlike some other, these 2 SL Work-horses rarely received any appreciation or rewards they deserved for the silent but decisive match-winning efforts they rendered in numerous occasions, throughout their careers! They were grossly Ignored, Underestimated /Criticized, Underutilized & Unappreciated in SL cricket scene during the past.!

This is how SL batters contributed in 2nd Test:

Tharanga - 93 + 45 =137

Mathews -39 + 43*= 82

Sanga - 59 + 22= 81

Mahela - 53 + 4 = 58

Kaushal - 17, 41= 58

Dikwellka - 24 + 21 = 45

Thirimanne- 20, 10 = 30

I'm more than taken up by Pakistan's gentleman way of handling pressure situations even when Mahela not given out caught behind after the review there were no remonstrations & bad language when the stakes were very high usually you see in this age. Mahela and Sanga batted so well for that partnership. It was a dead crucial moment of the game and it is the real difference maker. Otherwise Pakistan would have been chasing a score around 200. These two are the greatest batting duo in the world cricket today. Can't ask anything better than a 100 run stand in this farewell test! Hats off for both legends!

Pakistan 127/7 and a certain defeat is on the cards. The so called SSC highway is assisting bowlersl! This Pakistan team played absolutely poor cricket in this series. Well done SL and hopefully the will climb up in the rankings and deserving so as they played very well in tests during last 2 years..

Wha ta a great send off for legendary Mahela Jayawardhane..one of the best players in the world and the best captains for SL! Ends his career with a 50 and with 50+ average. Well Done Maiya.... You didn't let others ask why you don't just retire... you retired when everyone was asking you to stay! That's who a true legend is!

its all over for pakistan. some poor cricket by them. looked like some teenagers who dont even know how to hold bat. they had chance in 1st test and lost it because of their own mistakes. they had chance in 1st innings to get a lead but played poor. top 3 thrown their startsaway with poor shots. SL's last 3 bolwers scored 59 on their own after last recognized batsman in 1st innings but pak had sarfraz till end but not much support.

it was bad luck for pak, they lost juniad. without junaid, this attack is nothing. still an excellent effort by 3 bowlers to get 10 wickets. junaid's absence was the difference. 270 was never easy on this wicket but required better game. khurram needs to go. just a waste. sarfraz was a plus point. by far the best batsman but cant win alone.

well played by SL. superb by herath and good batting by mahela, sanga and mathews. by far the best team. we have seen a great of game last time. mahela will surely be missed.

Im a SL fan ..but this match is still can not be predicted bcz ahmed is still on the crease..and they have plenty balls to bat on..but SL has the upper hand cz they only need 3wickets..junaid is injured..so 2wickets may do the job..go on SL,.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 11:44 GMT)

Sarfraz and Shafiq should play aggressive cricket if they want to make some chances, otherwise its all srilanka..

Posted by cric1965 on (August 17, 2014, 11:07 GMT)

Now 72/5. Sri Lanka need one more wicket to rattle tail enders.

Pakistans last hope at the crease. Battle of the two best spinners in the world and Herath has won it hands down.

2-0 on the way. What a way to send off Maiya.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 10:20 GMT)

There is no come back for PAK. They were in a good position in first test and lost the game. But here it's all but going down 2-0. Great team work by SL.

SL was on top untill today morning, when they just threw away the advantage by loosing the last eight wickets for105 runs, and two runouts in that, dissapointing batting from dilruwan getting out for 2 ducks,i feel that pakistan might win this now..

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 9:37 GMT)

2 down. looking harder for pakistan. khurram manzoor needs to be kicked out now. such a poor shot. not done much since that 146 vs SA.

Pakistan collapse started if possible match will be over today. Congrats SL for victory. No one can save Pakistan from defeat now.

Thirimanna should be dropped from all the formats . This lad's issue is not about how many runs he scores . He makes the others batting with him uncomfortable .

Posted by karthik_ig on (August 17, 2014, 9:11 GMT)

This is turning out to be terrific test match and a great series..Having all flavours of test cricket..waiting for the pakistan's chase..People who dont love test match..watch this one..

Wow and Mathews remains unbeaten on 43,imagine how much difference 25-30 more runs from him would have made,a target of 300 would have given them huge psychological advantage

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 8:49 GMT)

SL ahead. good comeback by Pak bowlers today.

The difference was junaid khan. good effort by 3 bowlers attack though to get all wickets. Pakistan badly missed Junaid khan in this innings. All 3 bowlers looked clue less yesterday and wasted a new ball.

Still a good score on this wicket and more importantly against herath. Top 3 should take responsibility and score big. Not throw their start away like 1st innings and pak lost the initiative which they had after 1st session. That made difference.

Well played by Sanga, Mahela and Mathews. We have seen a legend last time. SL will surely want to win it for Mahela and Herath will be dangerous . The issue will be though that SL need others bowlers to support herath well.

It is a bit different than UAE match. This wicket is different and more importantly SL's attitude in that game was different.

Hope we have an interesting finish.

Pkistan only won 3 times after scoring more than 270 runs in tests. According to crumbling SSC pitch Pakistan will end up with 2-0 defeat.

What an excellent game of cricket. Enjoying it immensely!

Game on... AGAIN... so many twists and turns, Wonder how the test is going in England if someone is silly enough to turn away from this classic, let us know.

BEST of luck mr. Mahela. You are a true leader

Posted by chucking_thug800_wickets on (August 17, 2014, 8:07 GMT)

life never fulfills once expectation completely. .I hv bn waiting down under for one more trip of mahela. .with Mitch Johnson blood in his eyes..goin full throttle at mahela at gabba..I wd hv loved to see fear in his eyes..with canon bombarding at 150kmph. anyway. SL selectors are showing lots of faith in this chap thirimanne..I think after mahela I wd love to see fear in his eyes . so.when are you coming, boy!

Posted by Cricketlover54 on (August 17, 2014, 7:40 GMT)

What a wonderful welcome Pak gave to Mahela. Such a delight to see for a cricket fan. Pak bowlers are playing brilliantly, wont be surprised if they chase the target with ease.

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 7:37 GMT)

Can anyone tell me why is Mathews playing this way when SL is in driving seat?Their same approach handed them defeat against Pak in UAE recently...his body language suggests that we are 1-0up and are satisfied with it

Posted by priceless1 on (August 17, 2014, 7:25 GMT)

Thirimanne failed again , dont know who will score runs for the SL team when Sanga too retired from Test

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 7:24 GMT)

I think it is almost out of pakistan's hands out. will be very hard to save it. Junaid's absence has hurt them badly. though ajmal pulled a bit back but he is not at his best and rehamn and wahab are just inconsistent. That is the drawback of going with only 4 bowlers. And tells the importance of all rounder in the team which paksitan badly need in all formats.

Hatts off to a legend. We have seen him for the last time in tests..

Posted by   on (August 17, 2014, 7:18 GMT)

I don't know what the sl cricket board by having a passenger in cricket team, Thirimanne . As I told earlier. He should be dropped and allow him to practice more at club level. Give way to another youngster once mahela leaves test cricket. I 'm sure there ample of players to replace mahela( why why only thiri and chandima for this place). BCSL is responsible to find good players.

Posted by Diaz54 on (August 17, 2014, 7:16 GMT)

I agree unless Pakistan can find Lara or Amla in the batting line up which is no!

Posted by Resultpredictor on (August 17, 2014, 7:10 GMT)

Excellent batting from Mahela and good time to retire from tests. SL are well placed to win this match. Mathews is on crease and set to play long innings to tire Pakistan spinners. SL already won this match when lead past 200, so SL won this match and series easily. Difference between two sides was Herath. Herath will take one more 5 wkt haul easily. CONGRATS SL FOR VICTORY.
