Chandimal to lead SL Board Presidents XI

Dinesh Chandimal will captain the Sri Lankan Board President's XI against the touring South Africans on Wednesday, ahead of what may be his first match as ODI captain against South Africa on Saturday. As the vice-captain of the national team, he could be in line to take the reins from Angelo Mathews, who has been suspended from the first two ODIs courtesy an over-rate offence.

Chandimal is Sri Lanka's Twenty20 captain, but his ODI form has been poor in the last 16 months - he has averaged 18.19 and hit only two fifties in 28 matches. He was dropped from the limited-overs sides during the latter part of 2012, though he retained his place in the national squad, and has been granted an extended run in the XI after assuming the vice-captaincy in February. Although he is viewed as a future leader, a promotion to acting captain may not be automatic, in light of recent results.

Both Dimuth Karunaratne, and Angelo Perera, who are in contention for ODI debuts in the series, will also play in the warm-up match, as will Thisara Perera, who was dropped from the national squad for the West Indies tri-series.

South Africa play five ODIs and three Twenty20 internationals during their three-week tour.

President's XI squad: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Kusal Perera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Mahela Udawatte, Angelo Perera, Sachithra Serasinghe, Chaturanga de Silva, Jehan Mubarak, Thisara Perera, Dhammika Prasad, Vimukthi Perera, Madura Lakmal, Seekkuge Prasanna, Ashan Priyanjan

Did you think Tisara can do difference in that hard pitches to bat?? he will not be last for 10 diliveries even! Those pitches are not flat tracks! nobody can come and slog! he will try to slog to leg side and will gave a catch and get out! Thisara please you are a kind of player we looked for long time! please come back with good batting techniques! forward defece and cover drive, cut like shots

surely sl win series by 4-1 or 3-2 but clean sweep they wont do it

Thisara is a frustrating player to watch. Loads of talent but very little utilization of it. He was dropped primarily due to lack of form stemming from poor shot selection. He's better than the simple brute that he has been portrayed as, but teams heave become wise to his preferred method of destroying over pitched balls straight down the ground. He has to evolve and make meaningful contributions to the team. Hitting the odd 20 here and there is not a meaningful contribution. In Dilshans absence an extended run as an opener for Kushal would be ideal, pairing him with Karunratne would give something for the selectors to evaluate. Upul tharanga is a solid player who was essentially cast aside but I think his time has passed if SL is to build towards the next world cup. If Chandimal continues to strugle, it's time for him to go as well. He has played almost 60 ODI's wih a 30 average and only 2 centuries, that doesn't cut it for someone hoping to play at 3 or 4.

Thissara would definitely have made the defference if he had played in the TRi series. I do not understand why he wasn't picked. I think he should play in all formats of the game. So far Chandimal, Kushal, and Jeevan Mendis have not earned their inclusion in the team.

Kithruwan Withanage and Akila Dhananjaya are playing for under 23 SL cricket tournament. I don't agree with Chandimal's selection as a vice captain to SL team. He has failed many times when we compared to other top players in the side. He is getting too much favours to be in one of the best team in the world. Politics works in SL as usual........

What Happened to well experience talented all-rounder F. Maharoof . Selection committee, asses his performance in past one year domestic. Its a Shame this committee also try to bring Mubarak,Media player Rabukwella, may be Kapu in near future. What is the power behind this? pl think of Sri lankan cricket rather than favours.

  • Suranga on July 17, 2013, 0:07 GMT

I think Suranga should play if Kulasekara not playing. Akila need more match practice too. Everyone knows Mubarak n prasad s days r over but selectors. prasad will play 1 -2 match n then hv to stay out of the game for another6-12 months for his injuries. n Last chances for Chandimal n Kushal too. They need to know where they batting and whats their job if selected to 1st 11. without knowing it there's no point of playing them as there more new talent to test.

i think this team will play today..:P 1.Kusal Perera,2. Dimuth Karunaratne,3. Dinesh Chandimal (capt), 4. Angelo Perera, 5. Sachithra Serasinghe, 6. Jehan Mubarak 7. Chaturanga de Silva, 8. Thisara Perera, 9. Dhammika Prasad, 10. Seekkuge Prasanna 11. Vimukthi Perera

  • Dummy4 on July 16, 2013, 22:53 GMT

If Thisara Perera had played in the tri series, it would have been a different result. SL selectors goofed-up pretty badly by dropping Thisara who could bowl a few overs and get a handy few runs.... much better than our 'middle order'......

    what happened to Akila Dhananjaya???

  • Sam on July 16, 2013, 21:59 GMT

    a) I want to see Thishara Perera in SL team. He's an extra-ordinary player. He was axed for no reason. Remember his contribution in WC 2011 final ? b) Where is Akila Dananjaya ? Exception talent. He also should make SL side c) Jehan Mubarak failed in international arena. SL should move on from him & select a potential young player.
