South Africa in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 1st ODI

Sri Lanka v South Africa

Sri Lanka won by 180 runs

Bright and HOT at the Premadasa as the Sri Lankan openers walk out, it is that old firm again, Dilshan & Tharanga. Morkel has the first new ball, and there are two slips

2.05pm South Africa win the toss and will bowl first

Chandimal would also have bowled, hmm. Nine of the last 12 games, starting from 2011, have been won by the chasing side on this ground

Hashim Amla has some stiffness in his neck and is not playing, Tsotsobe isn't as well, but Morne Morkel is in. Jehan Mubarak will play his first game for Sri Lanka in four years. Sri Lanka are playing one specialist spinner, Herath, but South Africa, as they had indicated, are playing two, Peterson and Phangiso. Both left-armers, but five of the Sri Lankan top eight are left-handers, too

Russell Arnold says the pitch is hard but there are some cracks around which the soil is a bit loose. Bat first, and make around 260, he says, which is of course slightly different from what AB thought

Aryan: "I have no idea why jayasuriya gave a chance to mubarak,we have seen his failure,do not they have any younger player to give a chance. why him again? Ajantha Mendis should be in SL team specially when they play in RPS"

1.50pm Right then, for the first time in nine years, the South Africans will play an ODI in Sri Lanka. Whoever said there was too much cricket going on? Toss in ten minutes, from the R Premadasa Stadium, which is hosting its first ODI in a year. Some big names in the last ODI these two played in Sri Lanka, in August 2004. Three of them batted one after the other in the order for the hosts, and they are still around - Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Dilshan. So is Herath. The only South African still around from that XI - Duminy.

For now, the raging issue is how long can Sri Lanka continue to rely on the three senior batsmen? They need runs from the young ones, which includes their youngest ODI captain - Dinesh Chandimal. Our Sri Lanka correspondent Andrew Fernando aka the man who's never used any form of transportation other than Apparition, has apparated to the Premadasa, and he tells me Tsotsobe and Morne Morkel are warming up. Both are carrying injuries, which is why this is positive news for the South Africans. Andrew has also written up this match preview, and it is all yours to read just before the toss. And while he was at it, our man also came up with this series preview

MrGarreth is ready with a sledge back: "Sudarshana, welcome Sri Lanka, the team that NEVER loses in a final. (ie. the ultimate choke)"

"I think this is the biggest match after 9 years in Sri Lanka" Now clearly, that is a massive exaggeration, Rimon, or you are polishing your sarcasm skills in the run-up to the game

Sudarshana Bandara delivers an early sledge: "Welcome Proteas, THE CHOKERS in big games and Sri Lanka."

Morkel to Sangakkara, FOUR, now he goes over midwicket, slightly short slower one, and he is waiting with the full swing of the bat

43.6

Morkel to Sangakkara, no run, he walks outside off and tries to scoop it fine, Morkel sends it far down leg, but umpire Kettleborough does not wide it, too harsh, on the batsman, Sanga is not impressed

End of over 44 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 243/3 (RR: 5.52)
KC Sangakkara    118* (115b 11x4 4x6)      M Morkel    10-2-34-2
HDRL Thirimanne    12* (26b)      JP Duminy    6-0-34-0

44.1

Duminy to Thirimanne, 1 run, he jumps out, JP goes wide, Thirimanne reaches out and drives to the sweeper

44.2

Duminy to Sangakkara, FOUR, as palpably as Thirimanne is struggling to pick them, Sanga is finding gaps with insane consistency, now he picks it from outside off and slog-sweeps to the deep midwicket boundary

44.3

Duminy to Sangakkara, SIX, no need to pick the gap this time, this is going over, swept from off stump, swept behind square, swept in the air, swept all the way, what a champion

44.4

Duminy to Sangakkara, FOUR, he had so much time he could have done anything, waits on a slow, flat, and short one, and swat it over extra cover's jump in the end

Adnaan: "why does AB always suffer with his over rate"

44.5

Duminy to Sangakkara, 1 run, follows him as he backs to leg with a 103.7 kph dart, Sanga chips it to long on

44.6

Duminy to Thirimanne, 1 run, he is still not timing it, what must be going through his mind seeing the legend go bonkers at the other end, comes down the track, manages a thick inside edge square to leg

End of over 45 (17 runs) Sri Lanka 260/3 (RR: 5.77)
HDRL Thirimanne    14* (28b)      JP Duminy    7-0-51-0
KC Sangakkara    133* (119b 13x4 5x6)      M Morkel    10-2-34-2

45.1

McLaren to Thirimanne, 1 leg bye, he went outside leg, but McLaren followed him with a full one, Thirimanne can;t get bat to ball, but gets off strike as the ball rolls to leg

45.2

McLaren to Sangakkara, 1 run, after about a millenium, he mistimes one to long on even as he makes room outside leg

45.3

McLaren to Thirimanne, 1 run, slower short ball, Thirimanne dabs it in the air, but there's not much behind the stroke, and third man gets around

45.4

McLaren to Sangakkara, 1 run, top delivery, Sanga gets a yorker angled in to leg stump, gets some bat on it, they go for the single, AB dives and lows, misses, Thirimanne would have been gone had he hit

45.5

McLaren to Thirimanne, 1 run, yet another yorker, fine over this, Thirimanne opens the face as he brings bat down on it

45.6

McLaren to Sangakkara, 1 no ball, gone this time, uh oh, wait, umpire Kettleborough is calling a no-ball, even as McLaren has hit the stumps on the full after Sanga walked outside off and missed the scoop

That is so harsh on the bowler, apparently there were five men outside the circle

45.6

McLaren to Sangakkara, FOUR, Sanga connects this time, walking outside off again, the ball is full at his pads, but he gets the bat down in time, and fine leg messes up at the boundary

AB talks to the umpire, presumably about the no-ball, but the harm is done

End of over 46 (10 runs) Sri Lanka 270/3 (RR: 5.86)
KC Sangakkara    139* (123b 14x4 5x6)      R McLaren    8-0-45-0

46.1

Morris to Thirimanne, 1 run, Thirimanne gets off strike early with a single to point off a full delivery

46.2

46.3

Morris to Sangakkara, FOUR, and again, same region, four more, comes down the wicket, McLaren goes full, Sanga seemed to open the face as he went after it

46.4

Morris to Sangakkara, no run, drills a full delivery straight to point,

Now Morris has lost the ball as he runs in, AB must be counting the seconds

46.5

Morris to Sangakkara, 1 wide, sets himself up for the scoop, but Morris pings it down leg, and this time it is wided

46.5

Morris to Sangakkara, FOUR, 150 for the first time in ODIs for Kumar Sangakkara, with another walk outside off and a boundary fine down the leg side, stood open, feet wide apart and lapped it on the full

46.6

Morris to Sangakkara, 1 run, keeps strike with a single to third man

End of over 47 (15 runs) Sri Lanka 285/3 (RR: 6.06)

Sanga has contributed 100 to this stand now, Thiri has 17

47.3

McLaren to Thirimanne, OUT, Thirimanne's contribution will stay 17, he's heaved a full toss to midwicket, hopefully he doesn't allow this innings to dent his confidence

HDRL Thirimanne c Peterson b McLaren 17 (68m 33b 0x4 0x6) SR: 51.51

47.4

McLaren to Sangakkara, no run, moving several feet outside leg, swings the bat and the thick edge goes on the bounce to short third man

47.5

McLaren to Sangakkara, 2 runs, charges out and heaves, it loops over midwicket and Perera races for the second

Duminda Nishad: "I have never missed a singe ODI innings batted by Sanga. To be honest, I have never ever seen this gentleman timing the ball this well. He is easily clearing the boundaries today, 5 of them so far."

47.6

McLaren to Sangakkara, 1 run, he might as well be playing a T20, another walk outside off, another meaty connection to the lap shot

End of over 48 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 293/4 (RR: 6.10)
KC Sangakkara    160* (133b 18x4 5x6)      R McLaren    9-0-53-1

48.3

48.5

Phangiso to Sangakkara, OUT, he;s gone for a big pull from outside off, but mishit one for once, and long on's settled under

NLTC Perera    1* (2b)      AM Phangiso    9-0-50-1
LD Chandimal    0* (0b)      R McLaren    9-0-53-1

49.1

McLaren to Perera, FOUR, full and wide, but Perera's swinging blade reaches it, and it disappears over point

49.2

McLaren to Perera, FOUR, boom, overpitched on middle, and Perera cracks it over the infield to the wide long off rope

49.3

McLaren to Perera, 1 run, went short into the left-hander, Perera swivelled and pulled very hard, but fine leg is there

49.4

McLaren to Chandimal, 1 run, high full toss pushed to long on, and Chandimal is off the mark on captaincy debut

49.5

McLaren to Perera, no run, yorker, leg stump, Perera digs it back

49.6

McLaren to Perera, SIX, misses the length, it is full, and Perera has sent it soaring miles over long on with a massive golf swing

South Africa have overshot the scheduled close by 20 minutes. How much of that was due to the time it took to fetch all those Sangakkara hits from the boundary? This was a day where Sanga backed away to leg and connected with almost everything he tried. He built and built, and then rained boundaries on South Africa. They have arrived here with hopes of building a settled one-day outfit, and the start has been rather unsettling. The relaid ground has tended to favour the chasing side, but 300-plus has still never been chased at the Premadasa, and there have been only four successful chases of 250-plus.

End of over 50 (16 runs) Sri Lanka 320/5
NLTC Perera    16* (7b 2x4 1x6)      R McLaren    10-0-69-1
