Kandy's Asgiriya Stadium is set to be replaced as an international venue by a new one at Pallekele, near Kandy.
The new stadium is expected to be ready by 2011 when Sri Lanka co-host the World Cup along with India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
"We will try and play first-class cricket on the ground as soon as it is ready to host matches," said K Mathivanan, the Sri Lanka Cricket secretary. "A pitch, outfield and other infrastructure needs to be constructed."
The SLC would invest money and the work was expected to start after the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies, he said. The cost of the project is still unknown.
Asgiriya Stadium, which is a school ground, has hosted 19 Tests and 6 one-day games since it was first used for international cricket in 1983.
