The first edition of the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) will be a seven-team inter-provincial tournament played over approximately 18 days at the end of July and the beginning of August this year. The teams will play each other once, with the top four teams qualifying for the semi-finals. All the games will be played the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and the winner of the tournament will qualify for the Champions League Twenty20.

ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the seven provinces that will be represented are Basnahira, Kandurata, Nagenahira, Ruhuna, Uthura, Uva and Wayamba. Sri Lanka Cricket will select the players for each team, with domestic players likely to be allotted to their home provinces, thereby ensuring the teams have local support.

Each team will have a mix of Sri Lanka and international players with total squad sizes between 16 and 18 players. The playing XI must consist of a minimum of seven Sri Lanka players and a maximum of four international players, with one Sri Lanka player being a current Under-21 cricketer. Each team will also have its share of icon or marquee players, as well as a prominent ex-Sri Lanka player as a mentor or coach.

International players will also be assigned to the various teams by the SLC national selection committee depending on the needs of each team. In this respect, SLC's approach differs from the IPL, in which teams were sold to franchises who then bid for players in an auction. Among the international players who will be taking part are Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, Daniel Vettori, Daniel Christian, Herschelle Gibbs and Kevin O'Brien.

The SLPL has also approached a number of Indian players apart from those likely to be playing the Test series against England, and is waiting for the BCCI to approve their participation. The BCCI has already stated it has no problems with the proposed league and that Indian players are free to take part as long as there is no conflict with India's international or domestic schedule.

The league will be run by the Singapore-based Somerset Entertainment, which has bought the rights for five years. The television rights for the tournament have already been sold in Sri Lanka and the goal is to broadcast the tournament across all mediums in every cricketing nation. The matches will be played at 4 pm and 8 pm on most days, although some days will see only an 8 pm game.

7 Teams or 4 Teams or at least just 2 Teams, all I got to say is, just let Sri Lanka handle it. Don't make all the decisions even before a tournament starts. Everybody is concerned about financial matters, flops and how this ain't going to be successful. Sri Lanka is not planning another IPL, auctions, and a huge media event for cricket boards to earn money. This is an ordinary domestic tournament, a small, a unique, particular tournament. Why dig holes on the way to start? Stay away until it starts something. If somebody is becoming bored watching this league, all I got to say is don't watch, there are definitely some other people who enjoys it. Don't stand in the way and keep criticizing until it makes something out of it.

thats awesome love to see that which country will be hosting this tournament i 'd love to see it in dubai

Posted by crickstats on (May 10, 2011, 9:45 GMT)

I think what everybody should know is that SL have had tournaments successfully in the past without International players, So there is no reason that this league should not succeed. Wayamba have won both the tournaments, the only drawback was there was no TV coverage, which will happen with Int'l stars. I think it will be tougher than other T20 matches because R Premadasa is a huge ground compared to IPL grounds

Posted by sachin_vvsfan on (May 10, 2011, 8:17 GMT)

@ Genius2011 Can explain what you meant by double standard? SL has given NOCs and in turn gets 10% commission.Don't give NOC's if you want that player to be available. OTOH no player in SL is missing their international matches. Its only warmup matches right? I too dont like BCCI but at the same time dont like to see all this unwanted bashing.

Posted by STARFISH14 on (May 10, 2011, 7:52 GMT)

To make this league a successful one international stars like sachin, sehwag, akhtar, afridi, yusuf pathan, mohd yousuf, imran nazir, gul, smith, ten doeschate, kevin o'brien, ashraful,, ponting, should participate along with the home stars ALL THE BEST TO SRILANKAN LEAGUE.............................

i am eagerly waiting for the wi-pak test series!!they might not be the table toppers but test format will always attract me more than any other t20 league, ipl or spl,or epl, whatever!!the t20 has become monotonous, where u can predict the events almost every time!!last year i predicted the last 5 overs of an ipl game that ended in a tie, almost exactly right!tests always throws unusual moments that u cant predict!!just look at the level of commentary these days...they tell us during an ipl game that "its awesome, never before kind of event",when it actually is very lame and uninteresting!!today its just 1 league..5years from now there will be 5 leagues using up 10 months of the year, and only 2months of international cricket..and the players will usually take rests and breaks during those 2 months!!the fans who grew up on tests and ODIs will go away, and the 'new' t20 fans will have their plates full all round the year!!god bless cricket!!

Posted by TheShredder on (May 10, 2011, 7:02 GMT)

Too much of T20 these days. All nations wanting to have some fun? Or is Champions League the main reason for forming such Leagues? I feel that there should be lesser matches in IPL as well, plus there can also be an experiment with 4-day Test in IPL. T20 isnt everything. Think bigger. Think about Tests, not just pocketing money. 10 teams, 2 groups of 5 teams each, 20 games in group stage, and then 4 teams qualify for 5-day semis n then finals.

@ SaudSami

Agree with you. This is the best way to protect the sutainablity.

Posted by Enots on (May 10, 2011, 5:02 GMT)

With just 7 teams, don't think we would get to see many international players...with many beautiful grounds in SL, why confine it to just one?!?!?!

Posted by Mohidul on (May 10, 2011, 4:17 GMT)

I think its a nice step for Sri-Lankan Cricket. Every cricket nation should join to play cricket in Sri-Lanka and also every cricket nation should organize this kind of Cricket tournament to build new cricketer for there own.

@ Gauram Va how can u say uthappa is flop in internatinal matches...he didnt get enough chance and proper batting position..also gayle is best player from windies..rohit sharma, murali vijay and yusuf pathan made for IPL only

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 2:58 GMT)

@ Gauram Va: Sorry to go a bit off topic.... but stating that Chris Gayle cannot perform in international cricket.... hmm.... please get your facts right (More than 15000 international runs; 33 international hundreds [including two test triples] and 240 international wickets over a 11 year career are good enough testimonials for the guy's talent and effectiveness at the highest level).... He is the only recent WI player since Lara who can be blindly selected in any international team in all three formats!

end of international cricket before you know it

Looks like the only ones playing will be Sri lankans, couple from WI, some pakistanis and a couple of Indian players....LOL!! A disaster in the waiting.

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 1:23 GMT)

We saw how many spectators came to watch even neutral matches at Pallekele and Hambantota during the world cup. that's why I'm tellling SLC has to distribute the matches throughout the international stadiums exist within the country. Come on SLC, think about it! You can't expect people from Hambantota and Dambulla to come to Colombo to watch a 4-hour match! Also, Pallekele stadium seem to have fast-bowling friendly pitches unlike other venues.... so it will give players a lot of experience playing on different types of pitches. This tournament is a very good idea to find young talent and we Sri Lankans wish it to be a great success...

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 1:16 GMT)

Galye , Pollard, Rohit Sharma, Uthappa will play.. these are the guys born to play these kind of leagues .. They def. cant perform in international cricket! -------------------------------

This is bound to be a flop show. The volumes are just not there. All test nations thought and ran the numbers and it doesn't work out for them. IPL is working due to shear volume, nothing else.

Posted by MaxMaven on (May 9, 2011, 23:14 GMT)

BCCI are allowing their players to play in the SLPL only if it does not conflict with india's international schedule on the other hand they are making alot of players miss their team's international matches like Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards are missing west indies' international cricket. But more important indian players are not allowed to play other leagues during international matches because BCCI cannot make money of them.

Posted by WPDDESILVA on (May 9, 2011, 16:31 GMT)

This is too much T20. Destroying the game! Already IPL is too long and hurting Test cricket. Also it will not work in SL either because Sri Lankans are not fanatic about Cricket compared to Indians. I see a lot of empty stadiums!!

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 16:31 GMT)

@ Provenance, Players will get USD 30000 only for play 6-8 games. That's enough 4 da 1st tournament. SLC alocate plaers evenly depending on the need of da teams, so all 7 teams will be equal. it's only 18 days so it want eat the international cricket calender.

Posted by CricketPissek on (May 9, 2011, 16:25 GMT)

ignoring all the random comparisons with the IPL, talk about money, and anti-Sri Lankan/anti-Indian noise.... @Sportscityferret - this isn't franchise based. it's effectively the same inter provincial t20 tourament SL has had over the past few years but with international players participating. that's it. people need to realise T20 cricket existed before the IPL and that it's not the be-all and end-all of that format of the game.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 16:24 GMT)

Good move my SLC, There wont b any auctions, SLc will alocated players in balance way. Each player will play 6 games for only 18 days. Also under 21 player is must. 1st of all SLC need 2 get a good start, after 2/3 yrs legue will develop and player salaries will b increase. Best Regards!

"...July and the beginning of August ..."!? Players have to play with their umbrellas on. :-)

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 16:05 GMT)

PEOPLE WHO THINKS THIS IS A BAD IDEA PLEASE LISTEN- 1 its not only india which has there t20 league , sri lanka has been having this for the past few years but only domestic players played

2. this time they are planning to organise it in a better way by inviting players to play in there domestic t20 leauge and they have promoted by giving it the name slpl for promotion purposes and you cant even compare the ipl with the slpl

3.but that does not mean sl cant have a tournament, they can and it will be a opportunity to the domestic,ex international, present but dropped locals and internationals to prove them selves and enchance there skills playing in the sub continent NOT FOR MONEY for the love of cricket and enchance the skills and to promote themselves.

4 english/ausies have made there leagues attractive so sl is trying there version of it , and if internationals fail to come stil they wil play there t20 league domesticly just like west indies, bangladesh, pakistan etc

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 15:42 GMT)

@ Yolk_Eater-Iknow you might be a Indian fan who likes the game..but if you r telling that BCCI is the reason to all of this then why do some Indian fans who comments this articale acts like anti -Sri lankans? before pointin us ask from your own brother's..Yes it's ture that most of the people who commnets o the other articales acts the shame...be a part of wht u comment..don't just waste your words in to anger....

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 15:33 GMT)

People should stop comparing SLPL with IPL. SL is a much smaller market and I don't think SLPL has any intention to compete with IPL. Rather each league is different and has its place. IPL is built primarily for India, Big Bash for Aus, Friends Provident T20 for Eng, NCL T20 for BD and similarly SLPL for SL. Tomorrow if PPL comes up it is built primarily for Pak. The main objective of these leagues is to provide exposure to domestic players while giving them monetary benefits and boards earn through their domestic tournament which was earlier limited to International cricket.

Though I wonder and will be waiting to see how many players accept to play for 20 days for 30,000$ when they earn that much in one match.

Best of luck to SLPL from an Indian fan

Posted by rcjunk123 on (May 9, 2011, 14:41 GMT)

I praise and Kapil Dev for bringing ICL type of league & T20 culture to India. It was killed by BCCI because of power & money. Some media conveniently forgot ICL & Kapil's idea instead give all credit to Lalit Modi for IPL as if it's the first T20 league culture. I guess in the end the league that generates more money will survive.

Cricket being major sport in sub-continent, I guess these NBA/NFL style T20 leagues might work only in sub-continent. just like as in N.America NFL, NBA & Baseball leagues; Soccer & Rugby leagues in Europe, I think Rugby also in Australia.

Posted by AsherCA on (May 9, 2011, 14:40 GMT)

Genius where is the double standard (except in your imagination) ? Even for IPL, BCCI has required all players to get formal NOC's from their home boards and worse, get its franchisees to pay for the NOC's by way of a percentage of the player fee. The only double standard I see is - BCCI has not asked SLC how they are going to compensate BCCI for making players available.

SLC have been worse - they have issued written NOC's & then, chosen to withdraw the NOC's unilaterally.

I wonder what you reaction will be if BCCI does to SLC what SLC did to IPL.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 14:30 GMT)

give some matches 2 pallekele stadium!!

Posted by bigwonder on (May 9, 2011, 14:15 GMT)

Why SL board is so intent on having its own version of SLPL? Are they not tired of copying BCCI? Don't blame BCCI now for not allowing its player to participate in SLPL when it conflicts with India's schedule as the rest of the world has already done that (including SL) so it may be payback time.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 14:12 GMT)

Cricket's latest future is upon us!

Iirc, SL was the first to moot the idea of an IPL clone.

IPL, Big Bash, etc are products of evolving times no one is going to gain anything by opposing the inevitable. When Amateurs (Gentlemen) and Professionals (Players) split occurred in the UK, the seeds for cricket becoming a vocation were planted. ODIs, Kerry Packer circus, rebel tours to apartheid SA, IPL are all milestones in the monetisation of cricket.

teja099 asks who will Malinga represent - his home side or MI? Today such questions are not asked in EPL, La Liga etc in soccer; tomorrow they wont be in asked in Cricket's Premier Leagues.

Players are getting used to the 'new play'. Boards are learning the ropes. Fans have to adjust to the new paradigm. Loyalties have to be decided: root for Club OR Player? That will end anguish and dilemma.

Once the overkill takes its toll, cricket will either change or revert to just being a game.

Evolution or degeneration? That's an opinion!

Posted by Genius2011 on (May 9, 2011, 13:47 GMT)

Look at the second last paragraph of this article, it is one of the great example of the double standard set by the BCCI. (Indian players are free to take part as long as there is no conflict with India's international or domestic schedule.)

Posted by amitpat79 on (May 9, 2011, 13:47 GMT)

soon all nation will tournament like IPL which is not good for cricket . icc should stop all this leagues and make them play for there countries only .

I BLAME KAPIL DEV FOR THIS . IF THERE WAS NO ICL THERE WILL NO IPL

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 13:37 GMT)

I think it's brilliant! Yes, eventually who plays for whom will have to be sorted out. But for now let me say to sachin_vvsfan that you are utterly wrong! You speak only for yourself and NOT for 'most Indians' when you say that IPL is boring. WE DO NOT AGREE!

Posted by vissu295 on (May 9, 2011, 13:34 GMT)

ICC's anti corruption bureau should monitor all these leagues (including IPL) that involve international players. Recent spot fixing by pak players shows us that it's very easy to do spot fixing without anybody ever suspecting.

Posted by bobbo2 on (May 9, 2011, 13:29 GMT)

No more T20 - I love cricket but even the IPL bores me to tears. I don't even follow the IPL - would rather watch grade cricketers

Posted by Charindra on (May 9, 2011, 13:13 GMT)

It's fantastic that SLC has managed to get so many top players in on this! And it's a brilliant idea, because even though SL is a small island, there are some fierce rivalries between the provinces, seen mostly in local politics and inter-club rugby matches.

However I have two concerns. Firstly, why play only at RPS? Will the standard of the pitches be good considering the amount of back to back games that are to be played? And will there be huge crowds (it's a 35,000 seater stadium) if there are so many games at the same venue? Secondly, is the timing appropritate, considering the monsoon season in June? Although I understand that SLC had no choice with the nature of the FTP. All in all great idea, and hope it succeeds big time! :D

Posted by stevedd on (May 9, 2011, 13:00 GMT)

My only question is how much are you going to pay the top international players and if you are going to pay them a hefty sum then are you going to recover that amount?? sri lanka and sri lankans aren't so rich. look before you leap SIR!!!

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 12:54 GMT)

"all the matches in colombo,RPS "

this is wrong..I hv got the news that SLBCC will change this idea in next couple of weeks from a reliable source.. This will be wonderful stage for SL`s unbelievably talented young brigade that includes Fabulous Chandimal...,Lahiru,Pradeep & Bhanuka to show case their talent~

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 12:17 GMT)

Remember in the last champions league.. for example @teja099 If Malinga's team qualify and so do the Mumbai Indians, then the Mumbai Indians will have to pay a compensation to take him from the home team.. In the case of Pollard MI doesnt have to pay South Australia or vice verca but will have to pay if Trindad & Tobag qualifies.. the compensation can be rejected by the home team.. It was $200,000 last year.

Posted by harsh12362004 on (May 9, 2011, 11:29 GMT)

Its time to legalize the leagues and allow international player to be a part of only one such league. It seems like a joke when a single player is a part of multiple leagues like Pollard. What will he do in Champion league? play for one of the team and dump others? There are so many international players..teams should not select players who are already playing for some other team

Posted by sachin_vvsfan on (May 9, 2011, 11:28 GMT)

Yet another PL. Now this IPL itself (with 10 teams) is boring. I am watching it only now and then like many indians. TOO much T20. These money hungry organizers started IPL straight away after the world cup and i am happy that the TV ratings have fallen. I would rather prefer to watch INDIA VS SA test series. Now whats this SLPL. and what 7 teams?? But gud thing is its only 18 days. May be it will be succeed onlyl in SL and PAK. Gud luck to SL.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 11:15 GMT)

Just because some of you doesn't know how SLPL first started and getting the wrong influence, check this out. Started even before IPL. Stopped due to major involvement of club cricket in Sri Lanka. Revived in 2004. From 2011, named as "Sri Lankan Premiere League" which was first called Sri Lankan Inter-Provincial Cricket Tournament. Why international players from other countries involved from 2011, is because SEV buying rights for five years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lankan_Premier_League Not to compete against IPL, neither India, nor Indians. Annual Tournament which started to standardize the talent of Sri Lankan Cricketers.

I think the time is comming when there will few Few ODI Test and T20int.As we are having IPL toady. At That time there will be Once in an Year (If Possible) There will be International match. And rest of the time the every one will be playing for Money in Some Country in tornamnets like IPL,SLPL.So evry country will be having its own leauge. And evry one will be wanting to have there tournamnet sucess. So i think we should have a one Premier leauge conducted by ICC once in an year with schdule in Future tour Programe. And share should go to every Board. That will be good for evry one.And no one will retire before just for Money and no 1 will have clash with Board. But i think it is hard to happen because evry one want money. And that to not to share.

All matches on Premdasa? Its like a baraat camping to pick up the bride. To give some roots to the league 7 different teams must have 7 different home grounds to play on. And Home and away concept has to be incorporated sooner than later.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 10:09 GMT)

thumbs up for cricket board for start this kind of cricket in sri lanka but also thumbs down for the idea witch they are going to play only at premadasa ground. then how can other teams except wayaba get supports form their supporters.without that its going to be a good for sri lankan cricket........

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 10:09 GMT)

It will be a definite flop if all the matches are played at RPS.Mostly empty stands.Take my word..

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 10:06 GMT)

The organizers are making a huge mistake by having all the games on the same ground. Sure it will be less expensive but it will definitely hinder the success of this tournament .

Why SLPL? isn't it just as IPL which is run in Srilanka :D

Posted by reddytej on (May 9, 2011, 9:59 GMT)

@Ramesh BCCI is not rich only because there are 1 billion ppl in India it is because ppl here love cricket and also its not an obsession. If you really think population matters then why is CFA( Chinese football association) not as rich as BCCI ?? Think before you post anything dude.

@Manesha I think the above point proved the love for Indian cricket. U guys are welcomin players from afganisthan etc etc because der r no other players willin to play SLPL...the IPL is a growing platform not only for the Indian players but also for the International players...

Posted by ullasmarar on (May 9, 2011, 9:58 GMT)

Okay for a moment, let's put aside this IPL vs. SLPL debate. SLPL is exciting because it' prevents BCCI from monopolizing and also because it vests power in the hands of players. Now no board can expect its players to toe their line without question. I'm glad players finally have a voice, thanks to the T20 league(s). I hope more spring up. And to those saying there would be too many leagues, you are wrong. It would be like any other marketplace. Over the next few years, the really competitive ones will stay while the rest fizzle out due to lack of sponsorship, viewership and consequently, monetary rewards. A handful will stay up. So it can only be good.

Posted by Rajeev129 on (May 9, 2011, 9:56 GMT)

I am hoping that 7th line in this article is wrong. Premadasa is normally not good for T20, then imagine the pitch condition after about 4-5 matches. If this happens to be true then there wont be run feast, which all of us would like to see.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 9:51 GMT)

The under 21 rule is Excellent. India should follow this rule. because we need to improve our young players. team likes Mumbai only concentrate established indian players and foreign players those who are perform well in champion league (E.g pollard, jacobs). so they don;t mind abt young indian palyers. but if you add these kind of rules helps young kids. if good rules is come from anywhere, we need to accept. don't be hesitate BCCI. Again players like malinga and gayle need a loalty.but they r focusing onlt money.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 9:48 GMT)

pick up Indian and SA players as well...otherwise the league will not be as effective as IPL...They should also conduct matches in other grounds.... SL cricket needs to improve in varying the conditions and they are fond of only premadasa and SSC grounds...Thats why if they play on other grounds, they are failing....

Posted by ShikharMathur on (May 9, 2011, 9:45 GMT)

Being an Indian, I feel really happy about the concept of this league. It would really help build Sri Lankan players to gain more exposure and learning and playing with the big league guys. Plus it would mean more cricket !! :D

I wonder why i see so much animosty of indians towards srilanka and vice versa.I mean common guys this is cricket and not a war so stop this nasty comments

We need matches in Kandy as well.. Organizers pls consider it and have some matches in Kandy so that v can support our team...

Posted by Yolk_Eater on (May 9, 2011, 9:22 GMT)

i c a lot of anti-indian vibes here, not only even here, but on other posts too. People please remember, its the BCCI that keeps goofing up and playing the dictator, most of us indians even dont like it, its the BCCI, not the INDIAN CRICKET FANS. so kindly refrain from lashing out at common indian public.

Posted by pargat89 on (May 9, 2011, 9:20 GMT)

Congratulations to SL cricket for SLPL. But with upcoming cricket leagues in every country I am afraid there will be T20 leagues going on for 8-9 months in an year and players will start prefering playing for club cricket over country.

Posted by 010 on (May 9, 2011, 9:11 GMT)

thats brilliant.. but when will we get to know the squad of the 7 teams?? & wat if it rains?? heard that time colombo will experience heavy rain while kandy will be dry??/

Posted by area1985 on (May 9, 2011, 8:17 GMT)

yeah good, just saw what happen to lalith moody, the creater who self become a jorker within 3 yrs, where is he now? ipl is the most funniest tournement i ever seen, at least they don't know how to value a payer, thats y malinga has value for only 5m, he is the most valuable player of the tourment thus far from performance, not in paper, how funny whole indians jumping when malinga crashing on indian batsman's ,so funny only indians who take ipl seriosly, when whole other overseas players just come there to earn some money & have fun,lol

Posted by howizzat on (May 9, 2011, 8:15 GMT)

Prominent indian players will definitely be not available as they will be on England tour. Domestic indian players can evince interest as it is a off seaon in India. I felt all the seven provinces should have the share of playing the games at their pitches. But may be SCB must have thought of logistic reasons. Anyway best of luck and TAKE CARE OF RAINS.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 8:10 GMT)

I am not sure..but i was wondering how much money will be involved to pay the players? I mean, from my perspective, if not enough money is involved no one is gonna waste their time and effort. Rather they would take a vacation during that time. Although I hope it does well, i just feel it wont last long. The only part that is nice about this league is that it's short. However, using same ground and not having franchise will be big negative points.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 8:06 GMT)

mmmmm i think Srilanka ask al players to come srilanka to spend what all they earn in IPL

I dont agree with only Premadasa. How can the other teams other than Colombo ghet home team support if it is not moved around. At the very least their should be 50% of games fixed in another venue.

India, Pakistan and Bangladesh should jointly organize the Sub-Continental Premier league SCPL. 4 teams from Pakistan, 3 from sri lanka, 1 from Bangladesh. It will lock in the markets of 3 countries and is bound to be a financial success.

to all IPL fans... the SLPL isnt something to compete with the IPL, just a competition to advertise the cricketing talents in sri Lanka and a more popular way of getting a ticket to the champions league T20, as the inter-provincial twenty20 didnt get much popularity. i am a sri lankan and i can honestly say that the SLPL will never be as popular as the IPL, but have some respect for this league and just accept that it is only another competition. we, as sri lankans have great repect for the indian team, board and players

what about payment from SRL? may be ask BCCI to pay or PANN+PARUPPU for all man of the match

Posted by Chakra1685 on (May 9, 2011, 6:24 GMT)

Hmm... its a mixed bag.. definitely the positive thing is about local players getting the exposure.. I am happy on to see some raw talent (like malinga, mendis) discovered.... but again playing at only 1 staidum wont give the local flavour or support... SLC assiging int. players shows their intention (to make this competitive and produce good encounters)... I am happy on this... the only negative thing i could see that this might inspire other nations to hold their own league and could perhaps cause the some of best players to quit other forms of cricket... Anway need to wait and watch.... I guess its high time to get World Test championship as well... would love it..

Me being an Indian. You know, Indians are known as absaloute cricket lovers. so why are some indians themselves bailing on an opportunity for more cricket to enjoy? You guys should be ashamed for putting indians cricket love up at stake and if you dont want to watch it then just dont, stop comparing it to the IPL which is a totally different concept. Good Format. Its short and sweet. 18 days, play each other once, Team which will be decided by someone with "Cricketing Brain" rather than idiot bollywood movie stars in IPL; All is good. Though All games in one stadium is not good but of course if tournament gets the success then they can think of changing that in next season. Looks promising to me.

Common guy please be matured and Just appreciate and extend your support to others that way you guys will win more hearts and more fans for your Indian team.

We all have a great respect for Indian team and its players, but some bunch of fool's commenting negatively about other cricketing countries hurt and hamper the respect we have and this should be stopped and everyone should learn how to respect others. Specially when publishing comments on public websites. Please start thinking and don't lose the respect.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 3:52 GMT)

ha..ha..ha... Are u kidding? This kind of tournament needs a solid foundation and a proper planning and execution. From what i have read, the idea of assigning players to teams by SLC itself, all matches @ one stadium.....not a good idea. Need to wait and watch how good this would work out for them..

Posted by Vishal_Surana on (May 9, 2011, 3:50 GMT)

Thanks to the IPL cricket has become so boring I rather watch the world Curling Championships (Which I don't even know the rules of) Therefore I don't think even the SLPL would be of very much interest, to me. But what the heck, go ahead with them and more, the world needs a few more millionaires.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 3:28 GMT)

@ hashan: True enough what you says.. i ma in the same ground..! Why not select Pllekele & Suriyawewa which were built with a huge cost. Also there should be a big eye on Galle & Dambulla as well as those are prime venues in international cricket .if we say this is for Sri lanka the way does not sound like that. This should be a carnival plays at each place 5 like matches & go to the other. that will make a huge change for the future.

Posted by Provenance on (May 9, 2011, 3:27 GMT)

Congrats SLC for such a step from an Indian fan! Really happy for Sri Lanka cricket. But I also agree with Hashan Silva that matches should be played at different venues rather than only Premadasa stadium. And I completely disagree with Imran Habib when he says that it will be a bigger success than IPL! As much as I would love SLPL to succeed, this is practical to assume that with the amount of money being involved in IPL, it is difficult for any other domestic league to have more success than IPL. See yourself, the revamped Australian Big Bash is finding it difficult to attract even half the money that IPL has attracted. Moreover, there are reports that SLPL will have highest player salary as USD 30,000 - what do you take of it now? The Indian domestic players in IPL get this amount....again nothing against SLPL and I really believe that SLPL will be a success but emulating IPL will be bigger than an everest to climb....

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 3:26 GMT)

IPL is IPL none other than IPL can succeed If Top indian players are not playing who will going to see SLPL Its going to be flop If some of indian state player make mark in it it will be beneficial for them.....

Posted by Pagalavan on (May 9, 2011, 3:23 GMT)

It would be a flop.... where are the sponsors to pay the huge amounts????? Even Australia and South Africa are afrais to host the tournament like IPL just because of Money. Remember IPL was a huge success in South Africa because it has the ever growing indian corporate business support......

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 3:19 GMT)

it can't be as big and successful as IPL for sure, but as a true cricket lover i want 2 see cricket prosper worldwide.so, if pakistan, south africa, europe,US has 20-20 leagues it will be good for the game of cricket.no south american teams yet in the cricket fever.so,its good that SLPL starting!!best wishes from INDIA !!!!!

Posted by denwarlo70 on (May 9, 2011, 3:06 GMT)

I find it hilarious when they say all matches will be played at R Premadasa which is in Colombo and I quote "ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the seven provinces that will be represented are Basnahira, Kandurata, Nagenahira, Ruhuna, Uthura, Uva and Wayamba. Sri Lanka Cricket will select the players for each team, with domestic players likely to be allotted to their home provinces, thereby ensuring the teams have local support." I unquote. So, SLC expects locals from respective provinces visit Colombo, book hotels, stay at relatives, come for matches and support their respective team?? Oh Come on SLC.......

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 3:00 GMT)

All games played under a single roof and on a single ground... and wer the hell does the point of local support comes in????? "SriLanka Cricket will select the players for each team, with domestic players likely to be allotted to their home provinces, thereby ensuring the teams have local support."

Posted by CSKfan on (May 9, 2011, 2:59 GMT)

Absolutely right Mr.Hashan Silva! Playing only at RPS is a unwise move. Home and away ground policy adds more fan loyalty to the team!

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 2:49 GMT)

I totally agree with u Pawan ! The BCCI makes use of the best players of every nation but does not compensate those country's cricket boards. As a result every country will start their own T20 leagues of various sizes, and first class cricket as we see it now, which is the real foundation of quality cricket(however unattractive it is to the marketing people)wil die out. Perhaps that is what the BCCI wants in the first place.

Posted by Shafi79 on (May 9, 2011, 2:40 GMT)

ideally, in a prefect world - this idea should be scrapped and maybe the BCCI can expand on its IPL model and allow maybe one Colombo based franchise, one Dhaka based franchise and two franchises from PAK (of course then it probably wont be the INDIAN premier League). Wont it make things interesting though? That way maybe the neighbouring cricket boards too will make some money and more importantly you will have the players from all these countries fully available for the whole duration of the IPL.

Posted by cricket_for_all on (May 9, 2011, 2:20 GMT)

I don't understand the fact that all matches will be played in Colombo?. Come on we have other big cities like Kandy (Pallekelle) , Galle, and Dambulle (close to Kurunegala!!!.note for non-Sri Lankans:-- Kurunegale is bigger than Kandy). This is good time to promote some cricket in the north and east. If we can play one or two matches in Jeffna even in the day time will be a huge boost for unity and can make fan base there as well. (Remember Jaffna was the second largest city of Sri Lanka before LTTE era). I think that WICB and SLC have so many similarities on any selection issues.

"All the games will be played the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo...." This doesn't sound good. Sri Lanka has 4 stadiums with floodlights in 4 separate cities and having everything played at Premadasa will only reduce the number of spectators coming to watch the tournament... anyone can understand that. wondering why SLC can't understand such a basic thing.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 1:28 GMT)

oooh.. Now i understand wat d drama happened behind the scenes of 'SLC wanted to pull out their players from IPL early'.. and BCCI seems to be responded postive for them with their plan of own league.. Good tactics SLC.. But playing with BCCI is not good for future of SLC though..

The fun would be if Pollard qualifies with SL team. He is already in Australian, Trinidad and Tobago and likely Mumbai Indians.

This will benefit lots of local players to get experience from international stars.

not another PL, how about we merge the IPL with the SLPL and call it the APL, asian premier league and give it legitimacy and share the profits. Otherwise this is just overkill and as they say too much of any thing is good for .....

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 0:56 GMT)

good fo slpl maybe brian lara/shiv chandpal an others can get to play some t20 an not being snubbed like ipl did them. go SLPL.

Domestic Tournament- Not news.

Posted by cricraz on (May 8, 2011, 23:56 GMT)

For all those IPL and India haters, I have one thing to say. Wishing the SL premier league all the success. They have to realize it will be never be as big as IPL, because the economy does not support a tournament the scale of IPL. Everyone wants BCCI to share its wealth but did England and Australia share their wealth in the 70's and 80's. Look at English Premier league, soccer. Do they share their wealth with the south american and other european countries? Club style T20 is here to grow just like soccer. Soccer national teams play as unit no more than 5-10 games a year but are still popular during the world club. So for all those people thinking that IPL is killing cricket, think of Football!!!!

Great to see Sri Lanka getting their own league, Include the Pakistani Players so that Indian Monoply of deciding who will play and who not will be stopped. I wish it success and more success than IPL.

Posted by Finn92 on (May 8, 2011, 23:13 GMT)

Boring, another twenty20 tournament just what we need!

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (May 8, 2011, 23:13 GMT)

Well well another T20 competition, "yaawwnn". Nothing can beat the fame, glitz, and quality of the IPL.I seriously think the IPL should EXPAND and include other subcontinental teams from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. That's what made the ICL special. After all isn't the whole region called the INDIAN subcontinent ?!! the BCCI needs to spread the wealth OR else we will see lots of mini T20 comps springing from all directions. Testing times for cricket but club cricket needs to be encouraged.

it wil b a super flop mark my words

Instead of SLC running their own tournament, I think the BCCI should stop being selfish and dish out more of the cash they earn from the IPL to all the the other cricket boards.

What happens if the same players are in the teams of SLPL and IPL, and both the teams qualify to play in Champions League Twenty20?

Posted by avmd on (May 8, 2011, 21:33 GMT)

Good news, for players and for SL fans. I'm sure it will a success, as SL is a good place to visit and local crowd support is expected to be very good. I hope the 20/20 cricket is kept at domestic level for entertainment and for cricketers to make some well dererved money but when it comes to compete at international level to decide which one is the better cricketing nation, ODI and tests are the ways to go and not 20/20. Abolish 20/20 at international level, keep it at domestic level.

Hey Sri Lanka is on the way to India and India is supporting them........

Posted by maddy20 on (May 8, 2011, 20:43 GMT)

I wish the SLC all the best and I am positive the BCCI would send its first class players to participate(as India will have a tour of England going on). Though I am unsure how its gonna work out, they should give it their best shot!

Posted by luv2break on (May 8, 2011, 20:25 GMT)

i hope we see more of pakistani players in this league,we are already deprived of IPL and champions league...pakistani fans are really amazing for having kept quiet for such discrimination....please bring back cricket to us...FROM A PAKISTANI FAN....

Posted by   on (May 8, 2011, 20:17 GMT)

THERE is also talk of a PAK PL IN DUBAI.INT'L teams may have to amend players' contracts. I suppose it gives talented players, who cannot make the NAT'L team the opportunity to sell their wares elsewhere. I have no quarrel, once cricket as I know it is protected by the relevant authority. I still see TEST and 50 overs, as the principle formats of the game. MAYBE a little old fashion.

Gona go to watch all the matches!! :D

Posted by MeowCat on (May 8, 2011, 20:02 GMT)

if SPL will not have as someone as dedicated as Modi SPL will not succeed.Beleive me part of the success was because of MODIS hugee pockets

Posted by njstrnger on (May 8, 2011, 20:00 GMT)

Rather than have separate league for lets say SL or Bangladesh, the Sub Continent should take inclusive approach and one league for whole of South Asia, and send 6 teams to the champions league.
