Sri Lanka have recalled allrounder Jeevan Mendis and seamer Dilhara Fernando to their ODI squad for the home series against Pakistan starting in June. Also included in the squad is fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep, who toured South Africa late last year with the national team but had to head back home due to a hamstring tear. Rangana Herath, who didn't play in the Asia Cup, is back as well while allrounder Farveez Maharoof and Ajantha Mendis do not find a place.

Sri Lanka's limited-overs squads

  • ODI squad
  • Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekera, Sachithra Senanayake, Lasith Malinga, Rangana Herath, Upul Tharanga, Nuwan Pradeep, Dilhara Fernando
  • T20 squad
  • Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara (wk),Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Kaushalya Lokuarachchi, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekera, Sachithra Senanayake, Lasith Malinga, Chamara Kapugedera, Upul Tharanga, Isuru Udana

Jeevan Mendis, who also bowls leg-spin, has played 19 ODIs for Sri Lanka, picking up 14 wickets and averaging 19.18 with the bat. He last played for them in the ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE in November 2011. Since then he's played on the domestic circuit, representing Tamil Union, chipping in with handy contributions in the middle order and taking wickets in all three formats.

Pradeep hasn't played an ODI for Sri Lanka but went wicketless in his only Test, against Pakistan last year. After having to leave from the tour of South Africa, he had a three-month lay-off. Returning to domestic cricket in March this year, he's played a first-class game and three Twenty20s.

Fernando played two Tests and an ODI on the tour of South Africa and was named in the provisional squad of 30 for the upcoming series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Ajantha Mendis, who was part of that squad, has also been left out. Ajantha Mendis hasn't played competitive cricket since January following a back injury.

Sri Lanka play two Twenty20 internationals, five ODIs and three Tests against Pakistan. For the Twenty20s, they brought back left-arm seamer Isuru Udana - who last played for the national team in the 2009 World Twenty20 - and legspinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi, who hasn't played for the national side since 2007.

im a still sure dat they are goning 2 lose..,.... very poor selection maharoof who was consistent in the CB series...ho was the best bowler after malinga in dropped. And wheres suraj randiv...1 of the main future spinner 4 SL...kapugedara should be in the odi squad

Posted by ameen85 on (May 27, 2012, 8:29 GMT)

Another comedy peice from SLC selection... No reason to drop Maharoof who did well in CB series. Why not Ajantha and Randiv who should can be in all 3 formats if possible. We can win all matches if both chamaras and Dilhara are in all 3 formats.. I still cant understnad why on this earth they play cricket still.... God saves SLC

Posted by RyanHarrisGreatCricketer on (May 27, 2012, 8:24 GMT)

cant believe that lakmal is not in the team. he is sl's next fast bowling star in the making. he has not set the world on fire . but neither have the other bowlers. at least he is a penetrative bowler

good Luck Pakistani team....our prayers are with you....hope Misbah and Co will show gud performance there....and good luck to Srilankan team also

Posted by ---lasitha--- on (May 26, 2012, 13:24 GMT)

they would have given a chance thilina kandamby for odis and jeewantha kulathunge for t20s who is a great stoke maker, a mush better player than dilshan

Posted by ---lasitha--- on (May 26, 2012, 13:21 GMT)

@Priyantha Gunaratna- very true mate, he should have played in the south african odis, but this dilshan guy definitely had something against him

Posted by Srimal11 on (May 26, 2012, 13:18 GMT)

Maharoof should have been picked instead of Dilhara...

Posted by   on (May 26, 2012, 9:49 GMT)

If you select truly on merits final 15 would be Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Lahiru Thirimanne, Upul Tharanga, Dinesh Chandimal Chamara Silva ,Angelo Mathews, Lasith Malinga, Dhammika Prasad, Rangana Herath, Sachitra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera

Posted by   on (May 26, 2012, 9:34 GMT)

This will be a disaster for Sri Lankan cricket selecting again Dilhara Fenando SL compensate 2007 world cup final because of him now aging going to lose the Pakinstan series.Other point could not understand is inclusion of Kapugedara ahead of Chamara Silva I believe the final 15 should include Ajantha Mendis, Dammika Presad and inform Chamara Silva

Posted by Kyle_Jones235 on (May 26, 2012, 7:57 GMT)

Why would they bring back Dilhara Fernando? Do they want Sri lanka to fail? Shaminda Eranga was easily the best choice, the only excuse for not picking him would be injury. If not Eranga, Maharoof should have been picked... What happened to Randiv? Overall bowling in both squads looks very weak.

Posted by WickyRoy.paklover on (May 26, 2012, 7:45 GMT)

I m 4rm pak! I gues ajantha deservd a chance as he z stil decent,dilhara frnando=imran farhat,two similarities,1.both dn,t perform,2.both r selectd time n again OMG,kapugedara has nevr done justice to his talent,bst of luck to both teams

Posted by Hareendra on (May 26, 2012, 7:17 GMT)

Hmm... need a few more changes to make it perfect. Include both Chamaras into both formats. Get Dilhara into T20 as well. Then, we can truly test the strength of the opposition (by how many runs they score off Dilhara and how cheaply they dismiss the Chamaras)

Posted by boundryhiter46 on (May 26, 2012, 4:46 GMT)

Thirimanne cant pace the inning with big boundaries. So it is not a good choice to pick him up in the T20 innings. In ODI s also Kapugedera is far better than him.So Thirimanne should be replaced with Kapugedera. At least this should be done in the ODI s of Indian tour.

They Should Have Selected Ajantha Mendis

Posted by AB-14 on (May 25, 2012, 16:26 GMT)

is it fun, after every one series i see the name of fernando

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 15:43 GMT)

Dian007- Kapugedara had an opportunity to permanently seal a position in test team. But he was inconsistent. There is no excuse for his batting position in tests when he was playing. Usually newcomers bat down the order and slowly moves up as they establish themselves. He must be scoring heavily in domestic cricket. But there is a huge difference in standard between SL domestic cricket and international cricket. Same applies to Chamara Silva who has scored heavily in the past season. I do not judge a SL cricketer based solely on his performance in domestic cricket. Selectors should keep a close look at potential candidates. It is not how much they score and how many wickets they take only that matters.

Posted by priceless1 on (May 25, 2012, 14:46 GMT)

Dilhara will be the only one who will truly test the pitch . he will test each and every inch of the pitch by bowling over pitch deliveries, Half Trackers, leg side wide's off side wides ..u name it, he got them all ...:)

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 13:55 GMT)

kapugedera will have to bat top of the order in t20..unfortunately he missed out in odi..he is the sri lanaka"s best big hitter and best he must be in the odi as well

Posted by Mandernew on (May 25, 2012, 13:41 GMT)

Good selection. But except one... Dilhara fernendo. Can anyone explain me one fair reason for him to be picked instead of Shaminda Eranga? instead of that selection other 14 selections are almost perfect.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 13:38 GMT)

I am so Happy for the inclusion of DILAHARA my darling fernando. Splendid and Solid CHAMARA Kapugedara. I am so soooo sad why Another promisisng talnted and most valuable CHAMARA match winning Silva is not there. this is the scandelous selection. I need Mahinda rajapakse investigate this . cos this is unfair, when chamara kapugedara . dilhara fernanado there and CHAMARA silva is not

Posted by ---lasitha--- on (May 25, 2012, 13:23 GMT)

@Chandana fonseka-chamar slva, the most consisitant player??? is it irony or are you serious???? Im not saying he is the worst but 'most consistant" is too much of a strong word huh!!

Posted by Mathu. on (May 25, 2012, 12:49 GMT)

Lahiru Thirimanna is yet to be performed to include as a regular player of the team. We do not see batting performance of Angelo Mathews up to an all rounder. Sanga is out of form, Dilshan doesn't time the ball only Mahela has done sothing with the bat in recent pass. What is wrong with SL team..? where is the team sprit and individual talents they had. They are no more a dangerous and unpredictable team to beware of. In front of poor balling unit after MM's departure despite LM's reputaion as a toe crushers.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 12:45 GMT)

SLC and Fernando is like Arsene Wnger and Arshavin

Posted by sajhera on (May 25, 2012, 12:38 GMT)

Maharoof and Chinthaka jayasinghe must include at least to T20 squad both are good all-rounders. Dilhara & kapu are not a good choices. selection committee must think young talents like Bhanuka, Anjello etc.we know only 14 can select but think of a proper method for selecting the national side without political or any other personal favours. Good luck for sri lankan Cricket

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 12:20 GMT)

Thirimanne for T20s?? you must be kidding! And what is Kapugedara doing in the squad again?

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 11:22 GMT)

comments of fans not important.because their knowledge limited to International matches.and they support their heroes.but best 11 inform should play.not popular 11 of public.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 10:48 GMT)

That is very unfair not included Chamara Silva & Chamara Kapugegara in ODI squad.both played well and in form now.but Lahiru Thirimanna who failed to perform recently, included.

Posted by Malaka1979 on (May 25, 2012, 10:17 GMT)

Dilhara Fernando again.... he should retire graciously

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 10:16 GMT)

Lasitha: I fully agree with what you have suggested and would have been done in South Africa ODIs when Thilan was in terrific batting form. Instead it was reported that "Senior Players" discussed and agreed to let go Thilan to give opportunity to younger player like Thirimanne. Idea is not bad. But I would like to know who those Senior Players are? Isn't Thilan himself belongs to that category? The reason why Thilan was initially dropped for the 3rd test against Aussies at SSC last year and later overlooked for PAK series had nothing to with his form. True he scored only 86 runs in 4 innings against Aussies in first two tests. But what about continuous failure of Dilshan since England series? Then Mahela failing in last 3 consecutive overseas test series? What about Sanga's failure in last England series? Have we applied same criteria to retain them in spite of these failures? Dilshan's IPL heroics has nothing to do with tests and this time he has a point to prove or quit test cricket.

Posted by Dian007 on (May 25, 2012, 10:02 GMT)

Kapugedera yellers, you know he is more than deserved to be in the T20 team, you know in the last NCC match, coming as the number 3 or 4 batsman, he hit 8 sixes...

If you guys do not know how to raw talent of a cricketer, please do not comment and criticize players like this, these people are the future for sri lanka cricket, he has only got a problem with the patience and temprement and fear of peer pressure., he will get mature with expperience, and he needs to bat well up in the order atleast no - 4, against his talent., most of the times he had come to bat no 7...

Kapu I am with you..

Posted by virajfree2 on (May 25, 2012, 9:36 GMT)

I think udana has shown his colors last season. He deserved to be in squad.

Posted by burner1985 on (May 25, 2012, 9:02 GMT)

@Chandana fonseka, Chamara Silva the most consistent player we have? Consistent in what? Failing, yeah sure. And how can you justify Kapugedera's selection just because he got an isolated 50 in one match? Just look at his record, its rubbish. The one day squad looks pretty good apart from Dilahra, would rather have shaminda eranga, even for tests.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 8:35 GMT)

where is shaminda Eranga ?

Posted by randhira on (May 25, 2012, 8:35 GMT)

Great to see Jevan Mendis in the team. He is much more better cricketer than some of the other players like Kapugedara.... I think it's high time to Jevan to perform at that level. Statistics does not show everything. Jevan is a good team player and Sri Lankan team needs more players of his calibre. Good Luck !

Posted by ---lasitha--- on (May 25, 2012, 8:25 GMT)

thranga and thirimanne for t20s??????????????

Posted by ---lasitha--- on (May 25, 2012, 8:12 GMT)

now that mahela is opening, we need to have an experienced, technical very sound batsman like THILAN SAMARAWEERA in the middle order to stabilize the inning if wickets fall early. If one has to go out to make room for the youngsters, it should be dilshan even for the odis. I dnt think many would agree with this but he is just an average 'hit or miss' kind of player.I dnt think he has what it takes to be an international player my odi 11: 1.mahela 2.dilshan 3.chandi 4.sanga 5.thirimanne 6.samare 7.mathews 8.jeewen/thisara 9... 10... 11....

Posted by anver777 on (May 25, 2012, 7:13 GMT)

Oh no !!!!! once again Dilhara comes in.. BIG ???? I'm sure SL have better bowlers than Dilhara & this is the time to introduce few new young fast bowlers to the scene. over to SL selectors !!!!!

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 6:16 GMT)

It's a joke to include a player like Lahiru in to a T20 squad, I was looking forward in seeing a player like Bhanuka Rajapakse in T20's, and playing Isuru Udana again ??? seriously ???

Posted by siri1234 on (May 25, 2012, 6:08 GMT)

i thing not selecting ajantha mendis is a very very bad decision from the selectors.i dont know wat logic they have applied to not select ajantha mendis.i mean he was a extraordinary bowler wen he debuted and in the meanwhile his form dipped and he got demoted from an extraordinary bowler to a good far as i remembered he did well in the worldcup but the selectors didnt give him fair chance after the worldcup.can someone tell me why?i think wen he was new he should hav bowled like 10 overs 36-0 rather than creating havoc in the opposition by taking 3-4 wickets so the selectors shouldnot hav dropped him.

Posted by CRIC_or_CRIC on (May 25, 2012, 5:50 GMT)

Chamara Silva has been the most least performing batsman during the past 3 years & Yet is still given a chance. It is better to play Prasanna Jayawardena in the ODI team even as a full time batsman & drop Silva.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 5:49 GMT)

where is Eranga? he bowled pretty well against AUS last time in ODI and test match. he even got first wicket of first delivery..i don't understand why he is not selected ...

Posted by randikaayya on (May 25, 2012, 5:26 GMT)

And Kapu should be batting higher up the order, its about time SLC make proper use of their investments in him or just forget him and move on. Batting lower down the order in limited overs cricket isn't his forte and he makes loads of runs in domestic season batting higher up. In addition he has a much better record in test and first class as he is (contrary to popular belief) not a slam bang hitter but a proper batsman who was the best batsman on view during his last two schools seasons

Posted by randikaayya on (May 25, 2012, 5:22 GMT)

Shaminda Eranga and Suraj Randiv should be in the squad. We need a good pool of young fast bowlers and by sticking to Dilhara we are going backwards. And personally I would prefer to leave Malinga out to show him that no one man is bigger than the team or country..!!!

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 5:08 GMT)

No selection committee can please everyone in picking a squad. Personally I do not care who plays in T20s which is simply carnival stuff and not real cricket. Bringing in youngsters as part of T20 team is not the best start that can be given to them. If anyone bats in the middle order he will get to face few deliveries and if he is lucky to connect them he might earn few boundaries or otherwise might perish trying for big hits without getting well set. Those younger players can be brought in to the team in ODIs against weaker teams so that they will have opportunity to spend some time at the wicket. Kapugedara's fifty in last ODI he played does not give any indication that he has regained his batting form at international level. Since we lost early wickets he could forget about run rate and build an inning at more or less test match pace. When he tried to accelerate he got out. Had he gone on to score a hundred for which he had ample time that would have counted positively for him.

Posted by DVindula on (May 25, 2012, 4:55 GMT)

No place to Ajantha?? Truly awesome. Even in the T20 squad?SLC must pick him as his performance in T20 is perfect. He is a top ranked T20 bowler.I also think that Chamara Silva should get a place in test squad.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 3:54 GMT)

chamara kapugedera should be in the odi squad as well..bcz he is a better player more than lahiru thirimanne..scored half century in last odi n scored unbeaten 86(38) including 8 sixes in last he should be there..

Posted by Test-is-the-best on (May 25, 2012, 3:47 GMT)

No Dhammika Prasad in ODI squad?...He is better than Dilhara and IPL specialist Malinga....

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 3:35 GMT)

@Stark62, like they did in UAE.. you will see who will win don't worry..

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 2:57 GMT)

for the t20 y the selectors didnt include young player like bhanuka insist of including sanga.sanga is great batsman, but for t20 he is not in form according to ipl.therefor selectors should consider young tallented player insist of sanga,u will see my comments after t20 matches

Posted by Sinhaya on (May 25, 2012, 1:23 GMT)

@Bruisers, what nonsense! Forgot how great is Upul Tharanga, Dinesh Chandimal, Prasanna Jayawardena, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath, Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera??

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 0:16 GMT)

The SLC board has made another error in selecting the teams..where is the future, because if you don't give them opportunities now, how can they raise the game and perform if they are pushed against the wall. The squad should have had the likes of Angelo Perera, Bhanuka Rajapakse,Chathura Peries, Charith Jayampathi, Denuwan Rajakaruna, Shehan Jayasuriya etc along with some better performing seniors from the domestic league.

It doesn't matter whom you recall or drop. This SL team is and always will be entirely dependent on their {FAB} 4 - Mahela, Sanga, Dilshan & Malinga.

Dilhara???? Kapugedara????? wish it was me with my son ... it will not make a diference..... he he i can bowl a decent over below 10 runs im sure and my son could hang around 7 or 8 bolls without making a run....

Maharoof is out. can any one justify it he is not even in the T20 team.

Posted by 3rd_man on (May 24, 2012, 17:44 GMT)

I am expecting major changes to the T20 team after World cup. I mean all these old guys should give chance to youngsters. guys like Mahela, Sangakkara & Dilshan. T20 is a format where selectors can experiment with young guys like Bhanuka, Angelo perera, ARS silva, Kaushal Perera ect..look how IPL help some of the young indian talent come good. same thing we should try in SL. then these youngsters good enough they can play ODI 's or even Test cricket. I am worried about young Bhanuka though. he is aggressive player, but not consistent enough. yes , he bat low for SSC. hope he is not become another Mubarak for SL. may be he should think to play for smaller team which help him to bat higher in the batting order.

Why Maharoof is replaced by Fernando? and why so much shuffeling. Fernando's time is over. Maharoof is consitent and should deserve a place. Meddling with bowlers is not good for the SLC future. No one will and want to be a bowler. Board needs to change this attitude.

Its time the selectors start giving talented youngsters like Bhanuka Rajapaksa,Angelo Perera,Kushal Janith Perera,Sohan Boralessa,Sachithra Serasinghe and Ashen Silva a chance. Kapugedera,Dilhara Fernando, Jeevan Mendis,Thisara Perera,Lokuarrachi etc have been given enough chances and they have all flopped at the international arena.

what? fernando again. I have to say the squad is not good enough, could be better where is chamara silva, eranga. The batting looks alright but we could have given 1-2 young batsmen ago, maybe i'm wrong. the spinners are good, but off the paceman fernando and pradeep, not sure if they will perform. i know a lot of u guys like jeevan mendis, he'll definetly get runs but i don't think he can stay and get big score, but again i might be wrong. hopefully these guys perform and and all will be forgiven.

I grew up in the late 90's, so still have fond memories of Aravinda De Silva, Jayasuriya, Arjuna Ranatunga etc. I still remember when Del Silva, came to NZ to play for Auckland and the hype he generated mainly because Sri-Lanka just had won the world cup earlier. Personally, when I look back I feel Cricketer in the 90's were the best. They were superstars who made Cricket exciting to watch and play. I don't know, if it is due to nostalgia or simply missing watching my favorite childhood Cricketers in action. Anyway, good luck to Pakistan and Sri-lanka in the upcoming series.

I don't agree with the T20 squad, cause Upul tharanga have been added. this is joking, he should be replaced with an old rounder such as Jewan Mendis.

SL should trash Pak in both ODI's and T20's but I can't see them winning the Test series.
