Jayawardene quits as Twenty20 captain

  shares 271

Mahela Jayawardene has resigned as Sri Lanka's Twenty20 captain, soon after his team lost the final of the World Twenty20 against West Indies in Colombo. He said he will remain captain of the ODI and Test teams until at least the end of Sri Lanka's tour of Australia in January, and remains available for Twenty20 selection.

"I had a chat to the selectors before this tournament started. I was going to step down from T20 captaincy after this World Cup," Jayawardene said. "I personally feel that for Sri Lanka going forward we need a younger leader. It's a great opportunity for somebody to start in that T20 format. I've spoken to the selectors and they were quite happy with that choice."

Vice captain Angelo Mathews has been groomed for captaincy over the past 18 months, and is the obvious candidate to take the reins in the shortest format.

Jayawardene, 35, had given up the captaincy in all formats in 2009, but resumed leadership when Tillkaratne Dilshan quit the post in January this year. In his second stint at the helm, Jayawardene has seen himself as an interim captain until the younger crop of Sri Lanka players are ready to step into leadership. In addition to Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara has also led the side in recent years, before resigning after Sri Lanka's World Cup final loss in 2011.

"I took over till the Australia tour, so I'll assess what I want to do after that," Jayawardene said.

I think Mahela is one of da very best captains Sri Lanka had ever produced but i cant believe y he used malinga for da last few overs in da t20 world cup final wen he knew dat he was going for plenty of runs without using sum other fast bowler like thisara perera or nuwan kulasekara or even a spinner like akila dananjaya and akila dananjaya and nuwan kulasekara had one over each left i guess at dis point his captaincy was not upto hundred percent. maybe now he shuld just step down frm captaincy and give mathews to take over all da formats plz do it its for da own teams betterment we shuld now build a really gud side for da 2015 wc where it wont be a nother final faliure after failing in four finals specially

Mahela Jayawardne IS A CLASS ACT! Undoubtedly he is a GREAT LEADER. He alongside Sangakara forms a formidable duo, who have done wonders for Srilanka. T20 captaincy should be automatically transferred to Angelo Mathews, whereas Jawawardne should continue leading the odi side for 1 year, and test side for 2 years so that Mathews will get 2 complete years of captaincy before 2015 worldcup. I believe Jawayawardne has easily 2 years of more cricket in him.

As an Indian Fan, I would first appreciate the fact that Mahela is indeed a great captain and he is far better Captain then Ranatunga. Its an another issue that he couldn't able to win WC but taking the team into consecutive WC finals is not a mean achievement. I have never seen him foul mouthing opponents like Aussies. Even in victory he is a humble man and very thinking cricketer. And I happy that he would be leading my team, the Delhi Daredevil Team. We Indian Fans love and adore him. And lot of Cricket is still left with him.

@Chris Dharmaratne: The reason was that, it was to rain, and we should have at least 77 by then, whereas we had only 55 (or something like that). Same thing happened in 2007 world cup. If Mahela stayed at the crease for at least four overs more, and Sanga too just tried to stay with him, today, we are winners of T20 world cup. But, everytime at a final, weather goes against us, and our team gets frustrated, and then sacrifice the wickets. I think Angelo should have tried to hit sixes. But, it was a very bad decision to send Mathews. Because he takes a while to hit good shots. Mahela should have asked Thisara to come in. I don't know why, but I wish Thisara should come in the powerplay overs. It's true that ball swings rapidly, but at least he can connect a few balls, and push them over the in field for fours. He is the only guy who can hit a six from the beginning, of course not to yorkers, but to some good balls even.

The great leaders are not greedy of anything... Mahela, you made us proud, and we are very lucky to have a Cricketer like you, a leader like you for our national Cricket team... You are not only a gifted player, but also a gifted leader...

After your departure, I wish Jeevan Mendis become the captain. It's true that he is not a huge run maker, but I can clearly see that he has got the great qualities of a batsman... He never gives up... And he is such a nice guy who handles pressure... His school cricket is full of battles even when the other side is collapsing... Such a great character, like you... Mathews is good, but he doesn't have the expected qualities for a leader. That's my perception, and I may be wrong.

@sachin_vvsfan, prior to the Sri Lanka Pakistan semi finals, Harmony111 clearly stated that as an Indian he supported Pakistan, which is fine but that proved he is an Indian. He comments a lot on Indian articles and his Hindi knowledge simply proves he is an Indian. By the way Sri Lanka's biggest critics are Indians and other way around too. Mark my words bro I will make India my 2nd favorite team if they ok DRS. Until then although I wont die to support India, I will make every attempt not to insult India in commenting like this as you have seen how I have been.

no doubt, MJ is a great captain, has startegic, tactical and attacking skills. Problem I have with MJ and Sanga is they make all of this very political and make things very hard for administration. No man is indespensible so is MJ and Sanga. They have a pattern of resigning, SLC should drop these two and bite the bullet and re-build.

@Harmony211, Really? More hate against Sri Lanka? Look I know India is a great team, with an amazing multitude of talented batsmen, and great sportsmanship. But please don't treat a team who made it to the final of an world ICC event 4 times in the last 5 years (more than any other team) like they are minnows. And you also say Sri Lanka have bad spirit, Sri Lanka have won 2 spirit of the year awards, not many countries have done that (and in this instance bias cannot be used as an excuse, as most powerful members of ICC panels are indian) , last year Sangakkara delivered a beautfiul speech at the MCC lecture, talking about corruption in cricket, and was not afraid to pay out his own cricket system.Sri Lankan cricketers may not always win all the time but they play with passion and spirit everytime they play, they ahve a sense of unique flair that makes the game exciting. They are usually very respectful of opponents. Please do not badmouthe these players incessantly.

  • POSTED BY on | October 9, 2012, 13:57 GMT

He is a superb Batsman and a very dangerous Opener. His leadership skills are mindblowing, it is very sad to hear he gave up too early, He did a fantastic job in whole tournament. He is an asset to his team and should reconsider his Captaincy. I love him and respect him and would want him to take this place back and show the world what he really is. Lots of Love and respect from his Pakistani Supporter.

@A_Vacant_Slip: Indian fans being jealous of Sri Lanka? You got a great sense of humor. Btw, I've also heard that Bill Gates was seen ranting about me having so much money in my bank a/c. The feelings of India fans would be described as Schadenfreude, not jealousy.

@NikhilVK, we must get used to life without Mahela, Sanga and Dilshan. Angelo, Thisara, Chandimal, Thirimanne must be given experience by all means.

  • POSTED BY NikhilVK on | October 9, 2012, 11:53 GMT

Comments about droping Dilshan, Sangakkara and Jayawardene...? Just imagine what will happen if these players are dropped from srilankan cricket team... Srilanka will never reach 200 in any form of the cricket unless Kulasekara makes a 100. Such is the batting resource pool Srilanka is having for the last 5 years..

  • POSTED BY on | October 9, 2012, 9:16 GMT

@Mohamed Jaleel Ibralebbe: SL has reached the 20/20 Finals 4 times?? In which dreams of yours? SL has been to the Finals and has LOST both times. Pakistan has been to the Finals twice and won once. India has been to the finals only once but won that also. I dont know where did you get your story from!!

  • POSTED BY NP_NY on | October 9, 2012, 7:10 GMT

@SunnyFernando: "Step aside if you can't get the job done". So by that rationale all captains except Sammy should step down? Mahela or Sanga are still the best to lead SL. Angelo Matthews is not experienced enough and hence not ready. @SoulTaker: Not sure I can agree. Dhoni bats at number 6 or 7 and has averages of 38, 51 and 31 in tests, one-dayers and T20 respectively. Mahela either opens or bats number 3 and has averages of 50, 33 and 32. Overall Dhoni seems to have a better average and a better captaincy record (two world cup wins and No.1 ranking in tests for a two year stretch). I would say Mahela is more consistent than Dhoni but Dhoni has been more successful.

Mahela you are a true leader. I watched you captaining in MCG against Australia in March this year in a must win game and your leadership was admirable. If not for your leadership we would have lost the match in the 35th over however you got the act from all others. It is sad that SL lost especially for a captain like you who has worked very hard taking the team there. But thats cricket so dont worry move forward you have done enough for SL we appreciate your contributions to SL Cricket and people of SL.

  • POSTED BY mxnmxn on | October 8, 2012, 22:40 GMT

I think SL team should make themselves ready to play positive cricket. There is no need to depend on a captain. Also no point in comparing Mahela with Dhoni. Dhoni is a good player (one of my favorite ) but much overrated captain.

  • POSTED BY SunnyFernando on | October 8, 2012, 21:03 GMT

Wow, quitting after a failure has never been part of our culture even though it should. Mahela shows his leadership again by setting up a good example: step aside if you can't get the job done than clinging to it.

  • POSTED BY on | October 8, 2012, 21:03 GMT

Really great 20/20 Finals. Two great teams on display, West Indies were worthy victors. Well played Sri Lanka.

  • POSTED BY SunnyFernando on | October 8, 2012, 20:58 GMT

There is no reason for Mahala to quit over T20 Finals loss. I don't think Angelo Mathews is Captain material even though he is the next in line. The solution of SL cricket failures is simple. Make SL cricket independent of the government. Take the 7000 kg gorilla over the backs of cricketers.

  • POSTED BY stormy16 on | October 8, 2012, 20:03 GMT

SL need to stop being uncertain and give the captaincy to Mathews once and for all. This notion that the perfect time will arrive when Mathews will pass his apprentice to be captain doesnt exist in international cricket. Mathews must be given the chance and he must stand up and be counted. If he doesnt - you deal with that.

Hats off to Sri Lanka. It's a wonderful team. The loss at the final does not take away it's quality as the best team in the T20 format. It under-performed yesterday. The batting after the loss of Jayawardene mostly collapsed from nervousness. This is the only area where the team has to work. One other suggestion is that Thirimanne does not appear suited to T20 game. Chandimal or Uppul should be brought back instead. Otherwise the team is the most balanced at the present time.

Don't do that Mahela. If you really want to up lift SL cricket don't step down from captancy. As everybody knows that SL came this far in this tournament not just because of the individual cricketers talents. I think it's because of your captaincy and There is no way these yong players can do this as they are not much responsible(especially Mathews). Please Stay as captain for another couple of years and try to train someone that can do this job perfectly if you love SL cricket.

Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakara are two greatest leaders of world cricket. Both quit captaincy at their top notch, and offered youngsters a place, nevertheless no one could fill up their gap., and they had to resume again as Captain. How lucky is Srilanka that they have Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakara in them. They are role models. We love them. I appreciate their decision to give chance to juniors and let them develop maturity. Nice career, good cricket and excellent behavior. Well done! Well done.

Mahela is a great person but an ordinary captain. He failed to recognize kula, mathews, perera are more effective at the begging. Mendis, Jeevan and other spinners needed more overs. Malinga is becoming expensive. Still he would be much better than kula at the end. Mendis and Malinga can bowl last three overs. If Mendis is no longer available use a spinner or Mathews, not kula.

I think the guys complaining about Sri Lankan captains resigning after big tournaments Mahela's first resignation came in 2009 just before the T20 WC Sanga's decision was already taken at the begining of 2011 WC and Dilshan quit because he was not successful as captain. Mahela's decision this time is great I think. Mathews probably will be captain as he is the only guy at the point with enough experience and is captain material. the only guy who could have challenged Angi is Chandimal but he is not experienced enough.

  • POSTED BY ibbani on | October 8, 2012, 14:34 GMT

Such a good cricketer Mahela, he still has 2-3 years in him, I hope he plays the 2015 WC.Except that he could not lead to any win in any of the 4 finals, he has done many things right. his stye of batting is very good. There are some ridiculous SL fans just trying to promote all sorts of negative comments about Indian team. This provokes any fan. Keep playing Mahela. After you, Sanga,Dilshan retire, there will not be much flair in the team, it would only be a colts team as AUS did see when 7 of their players retired and are now recouperating.

This guy thinking that SL cant do anything further since Great Murali has resigned, thrown away his captiancy.Once Dilshan was out he hope that Selectors will come back to him but it didnt happen. And seeing the current SL playying better he will again hope for the captiancy. He the most selfish guy i have ever seen and a good actor.See his Acting skills standing near Mahela.

Cameraman has done a great work in pointing out his skill.

@yohandf1984: As if you have played truckloads of matches. Yep, we did see that he knows what to do when and this is why he played that ugly shot to get out in the finals. Your greatest player has won a dozen titles for you scoring hundreds right? Enjoy your mediocre MJ, for the rest of the world he is a player who can do well only at his home and even there can't win anything for the team - only score runs for himself. Your MJ and KS whom you call as greatest are highly selfish and nervous players. Everyone could see how nervous KS was in the finals. I pity you that you have to defend such average players and call them greats. But Hyperbole, Exaggeration, Being Average is the norm for you it seems.

One will never know why Sri Lanka did not win four out of five World cup finals they reached since their first win in 1996. IPL has everything to do with it. IPL has destroyed many a players like Malinga. Malinga should be axed from SL cricket. Indian gamblers have a lot to do with destroying our much loved game. At least SL met WI in the WC T20 final. By the way India met other teams at the airport going home.

It has all been enormous fun and great fight between two best teams in the world.Though SL sits as runners up for the fourth time in a world event, I salute whole team and Mahela for their effort. SL been a small Island archived a lot all these years after winning the world cup of 1996. Some egomaniacs has criticize the performance of Individual players and questioned the decisions which made by Mahela during the final. But remember WI was 34 runs after 10th over. They couldn't score a run from the bat till 17th Ball. That's the power SL has with their baling department. Unless WI would've smashed SL like Aussies.. Darren Sammy led them to a first world title since 1979… this is a great achievement after 33 years! Congratulations WI !!.....

SL cricket stll requires Mahela to lead the team. My only worry is that at the crucial stage after having lost Dilshan for a duck, why Mahela started his reverse shots? When Malinga was gifting so many runs why Mahela was using him for bowling? Why Dilshan was not tried instead of Malinga? No excuses that SL didn't get the toss becoz the score of WI were lower. 49 for 6 went upto 137 and this shoud have been thoroguhly thought by MJ and Sanga and should have setlled down after the loss of Dil. VC Anji too went for a lapshot at the severe crucial stage. This was like an experiment at the final match. Indeed disappointed as it was SL's cup...We had lots of hopes MJ.. All the best for your future endeavours.

In one of the previous News i came across comments about comparison between Dhoni's and Jayawardene's captiancy. Now after this final match we all know who is the better captian. Srilanka lost another world cup just bcoz of Jayawardene's captiancy. From 32/2 in 10 overs he simply allowed WI to amass 100+ runs in next 10 overs. Even after hitting 3 sixes in one over of Malinga, he continued with him in the coming overs; did not have the courage to give ball to any other bowler or toooo much trust in this bowler..Dont be over confident about Malinga that he is UN HITTABLE. We Indians already proved it otherwise many times....Whoever is the new captian this is a small tip from me.

Dhoni should learn the meaning of the word accountability from these two guys Mahela and Sanga , both better cricketers and probably not much lesser captains than him. Both voluntarily relinquished their captaincy even after reaching finals of a world cup (Sanga in 2011 and Mahela this time) while Dhoni continues with "We were so good" even after a super eight exit.

  • POSTED BY kam_uk on | October 8, 2012, 9:21 GMT

The spin friendly wickets prepared to favour the SL bowling back fired on them. I am glad this has happened, at a world event such as this there should not be low slow batting tracks. In future SL prepare decent pitches, SL as ateam were far the better side and with a decent pitch they would have won btw the way Sl would have lost to Pakistan had it been a decent pitch !

Shows his right intentions and his commitment to his country and cricket. @ALL_Fans: As a side note, cricket is supposed to be a gentleman's game, so does it stop for the players, doesn't it apply for us fans also, CricInfo's comments section off late has become a battle ground for all the fans. Everyone here needs to realize that cricket is a game and every team/captain/player will have good days and bad days. Please dont use the opportunity to bash the other teams/players or each other. It really leaves a bad taste at the end of the day. It really doesnt matter which country i belong to or which team i support. I am happy to be a Cricket fan than supporting a particular team/player.

They brought us this far so hats off Mahela, Sanga , Dilshan, jeewan, mendis, malinga, kule, metheus , thirimanna , thisara, herath and akila. You did it, whether you win it or lost it, we are with you guys. But you know we lost 4 finals, but we are the one and only consecutive Runners up for the last 5 year. Do you believe or not all the other team going up and down but we're not. We are there to give a fight to any team in any format of match. So well done guys you'll never lose anything just because we are with you as nation and we never let you down. Keep it up guys. Its just a one another final we ended as Runners up. No worries, we'll do same or beater in the next time also and that's for sure. We are Sri Lankans.

Think about the size of ur country n what u hv achieved. U promised sun moon b4 the tournaments and deliver nothing. BUT SL players never promise but deliver more than fan expect. At least SL hv mind set to reach finals when it comes to big games. Can u Indian cry babies remember the way u talk b4 the tournament thinking about winning the World cup title. now y is Jayawardane not retiring from T20 internationals and only from the captaincy? One reason. Then he wont have a platform to perform in T20 cricket and get a lucrative IPL deal.I think its time to pave the way for youngters. I think the board should ask Mahela, Sangakkara and Dilshan to retire from T20 cricket and concentrate on 50 over and tests.

but he boast a lot ...and gets excited very early and celebrates like they have won the match.. i remember him celebrating in wc 11 finals at end of the sl innings.

thats only my point of view..

apart from that he is great subcontinent batsman.. (he has very poor away record)refer to stat guru

    and very intelligent captain..

and 1 more thing i am seeing comments about his decision.. that after finals loss another captain quits..

The main two reasons for SL loss were the difficult chance of Samuels dropped by Nuwan and the totally wrong use of Malinga by Jayawardhane. Malinga was erratic in line in not only this match but quite innocuous in this series! His four overs ,with out a doubt, changed the whole comlexion of the match on this slow pitch! The WI team mightly struggling till then suddenly opened up scoring a lot of runs ,resulting in their dramatic victory.Close but no cigar will hurt the fans as well as the players a long time to come!

  • POSTED BY on | October 8, 2012, 5:13 GMT

hope new selectors change the captaincy of indian T20 team. jayawardane has resigned even after his team entered the final. dhoni is not resigning even after indian T20 team is not going ahead of super eights in consecutive 3 T20 world cups. he is not resigning from test captaincy even after 8 consecutive losses. also dhoni's form with the bat in last 2 years is also bad in T20 and test matches. he is doing good in ODI. he should be retained as captain in ODI. in T20 and test matches, he should be retained as a player.

  • POSTED BY suni550 on | October 8, 2012, 5:04 GMT

I do not feel Matthews is ready to takeover the captaincy. What cricket is he playing? I think more than the captaincy he is not worth having in the team. A player of that league should deliver more to the team. BUT the issue is who else is there? Yes, Kulasekara's catch would have had a impact but what's the purpose of having batsmen if they do not deliver their part.

It is a good decision by MJ to step-down. Leaders who could not achive targets or made blunders have stepped down in the history, whether in sports or in politics. The critiques who see resigining as quitting are wrong. The resigining gives an opportunity to someone else to rise to the task. In SL, the problem is finfinding a replacement. Anjelo name is mentioned often but has he shown any significant talent in his career so far to get the leadership position. I have lot of doubts. If MJ could not emulate Arjuna, Mathews will never do so.

@Harmony111, persistent losers? Haha we lost all games in this T20 world cup right? Stop talking nonsense! Who is the captain of excuses? Answer is Dhoni who never gives credit to the opposition. Mahela clearly admitted that West Indies were the better side. Mahela has brought plenty of honors to Sri Lankan cricket and helped us win plenty of matches.

Its a heartbreaker for the big 4 of Srilanka, MJ, Sanga, Dili and Malinga. As an indian fan I know the heartbreak of 2007 and the ecstacy of 2011. I hope for all the viewing pleasure provided by these magnificient cricketers that they get a ring before they retire. My commisserations for the lankan fans.

  • POSTED BY on | October 8, 2012, 3:46 GMT

There is no doubt that Mahela is the best captain produced by SL. But we all have to agree that he has made a few rechnical blunders during T20 final which , I believe cost us the game. Specially when Malinga was hammered all over the place by Windies batters he kept on bowling him. Rather had he used the remaining over of Akila Dananjaya , we could have kept WI score under 120 for sure. On the other hand he could have promoted Thisara to number 4 after dismissal of Sanga to have a few lusty blows , which could have brough down the required run rate to manageable level. All these were contributing factors to our loss. Anyway hats off to all the members of the team to come thus far . You made country proud guys. Learn for all these mistakes and do well next time.

That's very bad. Getting down as a Captain everytime the team loses a final. How many finals are needed to win one?

  • POSTED BY on | October 8, 2012, 3:14 GMT

He may have not won us any world cups, bt brought us to 2 finals under his leadership .to me is the best Sri Lankan Captain.he will be that captain that was underrated because he didn't have a world cup under his belt, while Arjuna will be going in the history books as the legendary captain just like a Clive Llyods for the Windies. I just hope we have our own Darren Sammy to bring us glory someday.

  • POSTED BY hasitha81 on | October 8, 2012, 2:41 GMT

I think SL should have still gone on to win the match if they kept wicket in hands. Malinga giving away too much runs was a problem but for me, fall of Sangakkara's wicket was the key. If some one was with Kula and Thisara at the end we still may have had a chance. Anyway it's gone now.

Thanks MJ for all your service to SL... You will still remain as one of the best captains SL have produced...

Good luck with your future tours in ODIs and Tests as captain. We as fans should be proud of you.

He has no problem captaining his IPL team. I wonder if he would have quit if there was no IPL and Champions league. Its the pressure of playing so much cricket due to all these leagues which is making Jayawardena and Sangakara hesitant to take further responsibility as captain.

  • POSTED BY Nadeem1976 on | October 8, 2012, 2:04 GMT

Sri Lanka don't have big hitters and finally they lost because of pressure of run rate and slow pitch. Mahela you should only play Test cricket from now on. Give this team to mathews he is going to be good captain. Believe in youngsters.

  • POSTED BY GlodenLionKing on | October 8, 2012, 2:02 GMT

Firstly Congratulations to Windies !!! Bring back the old memories. Sri Lankan will surely miss Mahela's captaincy. Unfortunately a captain can only do sooo much. Had Nuwan taken the catch (regardless how hard it was), the result would have been entirely different. Cricket is a team sport, while Mahela take all the blame, I think Sri Lanka's fortunate may have been different if we had taken the catches in 2007 (Gilly's drop catch by Fernando), Gambhir's drop catch by Nuwan, and yesterday again. These are hard catches, yet need to make a difference too. Finally I would like to thank Sri Lankan cricket team for giving the opportunity to enjoy every tournament until the end, four consecutive finals is a not a simple task. Whether you win or loose you entertained in every tournament. You folks will not be forgotten. Thanks and will continue to support and watch the games regardless of the time of the day.

With all due respect to Mahela as being great player. I don't understand, every time they loose in final their captain resigns. They simply walk away rather taking their to next level thats not leadership. Once captain is changed they have to whole team rebuilding process again.

  • POSTED BY Meety on | October 8, 2012, 1:28 GMT

Sorry for MJ to resign the captaincy in these circumstances. SL cricket needs him as captain in the other formats (Tests in particular) for a few more years yet IMO.

  • POSTED BY Ms.Cricket on | October 8, 2012, 1:27 GMT

Had Jayawardene quit before the tournament, SL could have won. Mahela was a good player but his thinking is now muddled with too much fancy theories and cliches.

  • POSTED BY on | October 8, 2012, 0:43 GMT

Malinga let him down. And the approach of couple of other batsmen appeared to be a bit irresponsible. However, this is the right decision for him as the stress is too much, especially because he takes the job really seriously. The stress showed at the CB series itself. He cannot carry the captaincy responsibilities with also having to carry the batting singlehandedly. The only fault in his captaincy was a lack of real killer instinct sometimes because of his conventional, laid back personality. Now he should relax and enjoy his special brand of batting and let the world too enjoy it.

I think Sri Lanka depends too much on Malinga. This is not the first time he had leaked runs like this in an important encounter. Perhaps Sri Lanka could have saved the match if Mahela thought of giving about two overs to Dilshan? This is where captain's sixth sense comes into play!

It is about time and I thought Mahela should never captain the T20 side. I like Mahela, Sanga and Dilshan but I think they are getting bit old for T20. I was at the match today and they just let the whole nation down. You could ask anyone who watched the game live. I just can't believe Mahela used Malinga when he was getting thrashed. Why bowl fast bowlers, when the Windies are weak of spinners? Mahela's captaincy was questionable and I felt he should resign after the game and it happened. You guys couldn't get over the line since 2007 and it proved it's getting very difficult as the age is catching up too. I hope they the board will not appoint Sanga or Dilshan. Malinga should be dropped totally. I feel SL is better off without him. There are many young talents and it's time to move on. Mahela, Sanga and Dilshan will be 37+ for next world T20 and will be 38 for next world cup, so make Angelo, Lahiru or even Jeevan captain and build a strong team for the next world cups.

Today was not his day, but making a final is no easy feat. I'm sorry he's no longer captaining a format I think he plays very well. But MJ... we really want you to lead our team to 2015 world cup

Mahela has done a magnificent job. This loss in the Final should not diminish the achivement of blending a group of experienced and novice players into a formidable outfit. Who ever takes over (it should be Angelo Matthews) will have an excellent chance of going one better in 2014 in Bangladesh. It is important that Mahela keeps going as captain for a while longer in the longer forms of the game to give Angelo time to gain experience and as importantly, the confidence of his team mates.

Glad he's accepted responsibility for the defeat in doing this. Tired to hearing his philosophy of "backing you ace bowler" despite Malinga having an off day. You do what is possible to mitigate the damage before it exacerbates. Bowling him instead of the 19 yr old spinner that the batsmen were struggling to play was one major tactical error which probably costed 10-15 runs. The other was the pathetic approach to the run chase where both him and sangakkara opted not to take risks in the first 10 overs when the fieldsmen were inside the circle. This placed far too much pressure on the other batsmen where Sammy had a licence to push the field back and play the spinners on a slow track.

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 19:37 GMT

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 19:36 GMT

Very appropriate decision, Dhoni should follow him. Today Mahila was cheifly responsible for Lanka's defeat. He batted like Misbahul Haq, never taking any risk, focusing too much on not to loose early wicket. When team play 20-20 with ODI or test match mind set then they are doomed. Pakistan was following this strategy in 20's when chasing mid range totoals and they mostly loses the match. In hindsight Lankan's should have promoted Mathews or T. Perera to open the inning in place of out of form Dilshan.

mahela's bad decision cost the match. malinga was expensive and he continued with him and why resting herath? he did the same thing in last world cup and that cost final.

Another great opportunity lost by Lankans. They have now earned this unwanted record of losing 4th time in 5 years: the 2007 WC-final against Australia, the 2009 T-20 final against Pakistan, the 2011 WC-final against India and now this one before their sweet home crowd. ... As a replica of what we've seen in past few years, Jayawardene has quit Captaincy. Ah well, I'd never say it is sensible but I'm not sure whether it's a tradition in Sri Lanka to retire from the seat of skipper after big loss. It makes no sense to deny from leading your team further when you've proudly led them to final of such a mega event. And we all know he wouldn't have done it if result had been otherwise. ... Talking about the match, one can easily point out that Lankans got caught in their own trap. You build a pitch exclusively for spinner 'one-man army': Mendis and you completely overlook misery of Malinga. What's even more surprising is that you just cannot forget the legendary spinner of enemy: Naraine

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 19:18 GMT

  • POSTED BY cravin on | October 7, 2012, 19:18 GMT

Assantha De Mel should quit for selecting too many accumulator for t20. The best t20 player in the country Kapu is not in the SL???

Hope he didn't do it because they lost the final....it wasn't his fault....Samuels just played brilliantly, backed up by good bowling. Jayas....yuh will always be a boss.

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 19:10 GMT

bad decision mahela there is no fault in ur captaincy we can't find a good captain like u

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 19:08 GMT

Individuals with extreme leadership qualities only have the guts to do this...yet Mahela's service as a captain to the SL team must be continued at least till the next worldcup.. he has the fitness and spirit and support of all.. and should not quit...

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 19:05 GMT

LOL... And then Sanga will be appointed the new captain... Déjà vu!

  • POSTED BY ForwardDefence on | October 7, 2012, 19:04 GMT

Sorry to hear that but understand the decision. He was one of the greatest captains of world cricket.

  • POSTED BY tamim140592 on | October 7, 2012, 19:02 GMT

I don't know why he is taking this kind of decision after losing the world cup final.... He should have been continue!!! Though a good chance for Matthews to prepare for the big chance

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 19:01 GMT

I really dont understand why do the losing captain always takes this foolish step. Don't they understand its part of the game and you must live with it. It takes a good amount of effort to prepare a leader and stepping down in one game make a difference. I am seeing especially with Sri Lankan team who have adopted this strategy. 2007 WC Final - Mahela did this, 2011 WC Final - Sangakkara did it and again 2010 T20 WC Final - Mahela did it....They need to realise the life does not ends here. You need to move forward...

  • POSTED BY androyuvi on | October 7, 2012, 18:59 GMT

Whats up with the Sri Lankan captains who take their team all the way to finals and step down from captaincy after losing that final.! STUPIDITY.! Their fans wont like this, they just play throw ball with with captain-position.! So who's next? Mathews? Funny, Sri Lankan captains! You are respected for what you have done so far.. Dont just give up! Anyway, who cares. Their country, their rules!

  • POSTED BY ankit_barry on | October 7, 2012, 18:59 GMT

Why??? Dilshan...Sanga now Mahela.. They are a damn good team & seeing the performance without Mahela & Sanga Sri Lanka is spineless. Hats off to you guys for making it to the finals yet again.

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 18:59 GMT

SL is a hardworking team which win due to discipline and good captaincy. but west indies, like pakistan is very unpredictable. and what i like in cricket is unpredictability. Jayawardene has done a great job after Dilshan failed to be a good leader. Thumps up to him.

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 18:59 GMT

dont worry mahela..., you are best ...>>> win or lose we love our cricket team... we wil beat next time... >> be cool

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 18:58 GMT

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 18:58 GMT

As a pakistani.... iam very upset to see sri lankan losing again in the wc final.jayawardena decision is quite strange...sri lankan team and people really want him to play as captain.

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 18:57 GMT

Sad that such a fantastic batsman and an astuite leader was not able to deliver the island nations's first world cup sinch the 1996 50 over triumph, this being Sri Lanka's 4th world cup final in both 50 and 20 over formats. These being losing finalist to Australia in 2007 in 50 over format in Barbados,20 over format in 2009 to Pakistan,2011 50 over format in mumbai to India, but Mahela Jayawardene has a heart of a lion,i hope he graces us with his batting exploits for a couple more years though.

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 18:55 GMT

I wonder y captains resigning their captaincy after losing every world cup final.. bec of their efforts they came to level of final.. improvisation s important rather than resigning.. bad luck :-(

  • POSTED BY Cricket_fan85 on | October 7, 2012, 18:54 GMT

  • POSTED BY lankavigi on | October 7, 2012, 18:54 GMT

He did well!! For me apart from the final, he's been the best captain in the world t20. There's no one to replace him!! People are saying that it's a good day for cricket, but i think it may not be. This could be the beggining of the downfall of SL cricket!

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 18:53 GMT

Good move......... Srilanka Your the most cunning team in the game of cricket that's the reason Your not getting the World cup from last 4times....................

  • POSTED BY on | October 7, 2012, 18:53 GMT
