Stanford Super Series, Stanford Superstars v Middlesex at Coolidge, Oct 30, 2008
Stanford Superstars won by 58 runs
30 October 2008 - day/night match (20-over match)

5.25pm ECT We are just a few minutes away from the start. The word is that this pitch should be a bit better for batting, which is good news. This tournament really needs a match where 180 plays 180.

4.55pm ECT Middlesex have won the toss and will field...and here are the teams.

Superstars 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Andre Fletcher (wk), 3 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 4 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 5 Sylvester Joseph, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Lennox Cush, 9 Darren Powell, 10 Rayad Emrit, 11 Dave Mohammad

Middlesex 1 Andrew Strauss, 2 Ed Joyce, 3 Neil Dexter, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Dawid Malan, 6 Tyron Henderson, 7 Ben Scott (wk), 8 Tim Murtagh, 9 Shaun Udal (capt), 10 Alan Richardson, 11 Steven Finn

So Gayle is back for the Superstars but Jerome Taylor doesn't make it, not sure if it's an injury concern. Lennox Cush, who has played for the USA, gets a game. For Middlesex there's no Murali Kartik and Udal says that's why he has decided to field first this time.

4.45pm ECT Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the penultimate match from the Stanford Super Series, which pits together the Superstars and Middlesex. It's the last chance for the Superstars to warm up for Saturday's US$20 million match against England, while Middlesex want to put in a good show after two defeats.

The tournament has certainly been making plenty of headlines in recent days - and not all good ones - so what is really needed is two cracking matches to end the week. Some pace in the pitch and a quicker outfield would help.

We'll bring all the team and toss news as we get it so stayed tuned

0.1

Murtagh to Gayle, no run, full length, defended into the covers

0.2

Murtagh to Gayle, OUT, gone! great start for Middlesex, this one shoots along the deck and traps Gayle plumb in front...so much for a better pitch. He had no chance, it pitched short of a length and didn't get above ankle height.

CH Gayle lbw b Murtagh 0 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

0.3

Murtagh to Chanderpaul, no run, that could have been a run-out had it hit, but the ball zips by at the non-striker's end as Chanderpaul changed his mind about a single

0.4

Murtagh to Chanderpaul, 3 runs, flicked away, in the air, but doesn't quite reach the boundary

0.5

Murtagh to Fletcher, no run, good length, outside off stump, prodded into the gully

0.6

Murtagh to Fletcher, no run, full length to finish, speared towards middle and defended. Quite a start for Middlesex

    • ADS Fletcher 0 (2b)

    • TJ Murtagh 1-0-3-1

1.4

Richardson to Chanderpaul, no run, down the pitch and defended to mid-off

1.5

Richardson to Chanderpaul, no run, tight line and full length, pushed into the covers

2.1

Murtagh to Fletcher, no run, tight line again

2.2

Murtagh to Fletcher, no run, offering nothing, defended with soft hands in front of middle

2.3

Murtagh to Fletcher, SIX, swished, emphatically, over deep midwicket. The left leg moves out of the way, a full swing through the line, and into the WAGs enclosure

2.4

Murtagh to Fletcher, no run, good bounce on off stump, and defended with a bit of a flinch. This is a bit of a two-paced wicket. Three, or four-paced even

2.5

Murtagh to Fletcher, 1 run, aims another swish over mid-on, but can't clear the man

2.6

Murtagh to Chanderpaul, no run, tucked off the hip, but can't find space

3.1

Richardson to Fletcher, SIX, hold that pose! What a strike from Fletcher, huge drive through the line, keeps the bat in position for the cameras for a full five secs, and that's a maximum

3.2

Richardson to Fletcher, no run

3.3

Richardson to Fletcher, FOUR, full toss, on the legs, and you can't bowl there. Fletcher doesn't actually time it, but he does the biz regardless. One bounce over deep midwicket

3.4

Richardson to Fletcher, no run, into the leg side again

3.5

Richardson to Fletcher, no run, outside off, and a swishing cut, but no contact

3.6

Richardson to Fletcher, 1 run, Fletcher keeps the strike with a sneaky single, and that's an expensive over

Steve Finn returns. Arguably he should have played against T&T

4.1

Finn to Fletcher, no run, on the money straight away, using his height well

4.2

Finn to Fletcher, SIX, thwack! Not a whole lot wrong with the ball, but Fletcher opens his stance and drives handsomely over long-on. A bit of a statement this ...

4.3

Finn to Fletcher, 1 run, back of a length, dabbed to midwicket, and Chanderpaul comes onto strike

4.4

Finn to Chanderpaul, OUT, a big swish and a definite noise, was there an edge on that? Asad Rauf opts for a referral, and if anything it was an under-edge ... not clear from the first replay, so here's Hot Spot - but that's not conclusive. But he's been given all the same!

S Chanderpaul c †Scott b Finn 6 (18m 9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

Well, that's a surprise. Odd use of technology ... I thought the benefit of doubt was meant to go to the batsman

4.5

Finn to Sarwan, 1 run, on the pads and worked to square leg

4.6

Finn to Fletcher, 1 run, into the covers, and that's the end of a breakthrough over

5.2

Henderson to Fletcher, no run, a big booming drive but no contact on this one

5.3

Henderson to Fletcher, no run, tidy start from Tyron. Fletcher can't open his shoulders to that length

5.4

Henderson to Fletcher, no run, open face, and steered to the gully

5.5

Henderson to Fletcher, no run, a fraction shorter, and pushed calmly into the covers

5.6

7.2

7.3

Henderson to Fletcher, 2 runs, full length again, and a drive through the line comes off an inside-edge and flies out to midwicket

7.4

Henderson to Fletcher, 2 runs, banged in, and pulled solidly through backward square leg

Malan to Sarwan, 1 wide, misdirected, down the leg side

9.1

Malan to Sarwan, 1 wide, and again, not the ideal start

9.1

Malan to Sarwan, 2 runs, driven with the spin, into the leg-side, and that has prompted a field change and an extra man at midwicket

9.2

Malan to Sarwan, 1 run, turned off the hips and down to short fine leg

9.3

Malan to Fletcher, 1 run, rotation of the strike, and another single to midwicket

9.4

Malan to Sarwan, 1 run, full toss, and that could have gone anywhere - instead it goes on the bounce to deep backward square

9.5

Malan to Fletcher, 1 run, driven down the ground

9.6

Malan to Sarwan, SIX, another full toss, and this time it's middled over midwicket. I think that's enough from Mr Malan for the time being

11.1

Malan to Fletcher, no run, much better, on the stumps at least
