What's Marcus Stoinis' background?
He represented Australia U-19s at the 2008 World Cup in Malaysia, part of a team that included Steven Smith, James Faulkner, James Pattinson and Josh Hazlewood. He made his debut for Western Australia as a 19-year-old but struggled for a regular spot so decided to move to Victoria for the 2012-13 season. The following year he made 170 in the Sheffield Shield against Tasmania which remains his only first-class hundred although last season he averaged 49.06 six in the Shield with a best of 99.
But he hasn't played much T20
Indeed, his international debut against England in Cardiff will be just the 10th T20 match of his career. He was ruled out of last season's Big Bash due to injury and although he secured an IPL deal with Delhi Daredevils he did not play a match.
What's his recent form like?
He had recently been on an A tour to India where he chipped in with a couple of useful performances, including 77 in the first four-day game. His selection for this tour is to help fill the gap left by Faulkner's unavailability due to the suspension handed to him after his drink-driving offence while playing for Lancashire this season.
The stats suggest he is more of a batsman who bowls a bit
After his selection, Stoinis said how he enjoyed the bowling side of his role but the numbers show batting is the more developed area of his game at the moment. He has taken the No. 3 berth for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield, has a first-class average of 39.20 and List A figure of 27.73 compared to averages over 50 with the ball. There has been some recent evidence of his boundary-clearing capabilities, too, when he struck six sixes in an over while playing for Australia's National Performance Squad in July.
Has he any experience in English cricket?
He spent a season playing club cricket for Peterborough Town Cricket Club in 2012 and in the same year played for Kent 2nd XI where he scored two hundreds in two 2nd XI Championship matches against Middlesex and Glamorgan. Sam Billings, who is likely to line-up for England in the T20 and the one-day series, was part of the Kent 2nd XI at the same time.
