Jason Haynes, the Barbados first-class opener, has been appointed the team's captain for the regional one-day domestic tournament starting next month. Dwayne Yearwood and Nikolai Charles are the new faces in the squad.
Haynes, 27, was part of Barbados' first-class campaign last season but hasn't played List A games since 2004. "It's an honour and a privilege," Haynes told the Barbados-based Nation. "It is a job that I can [get] accustomed to. I know there are going to be high expectations but I am confident I can deal with the pressure." Haynes was also part of the Guyana President's XI that played a warm-up game against the touring Sri Lankans earlier this year.
Tino Best, the former West Indies fast bowler who played for ICL, will also turn out for Barbados in place of Kemar Roach, called up to the West Indies squad. "Best was with us for just one season," an ICL spokesperson said.
Corey Collymore, who led Barbados last season, will play as the side's leading fast bowler along with Pedro Collins; the two mediumpacers are Kolpak players in the England county circuit and though they can't play for West Indies, they can represent Barbados at the regional level. Courtney Browne, the Barbados chairman of selectors, said Collymore and Collins were looking forward to the new season.
"When you are looking at developing a team and you have young players in the team, you cannot afford to leave experienced guys out of the team," Browne said. "Here we are looking to build a Barbados team to go forward. We have to start from a strong position and we, the selection panel, felt that Pedro Collins and Corey Collymore still have a lot of cricket to offer Barbados, especially when it comes to moulding the young players."
The allrounder Yearwood, a constable by profession, scored heavily and took lots of wickets in local tournaments. Charles, a legspinner, performed consistently in division-one matches.
Squad: Jason Haynes (capt), Ryan Hinds, Alcindo Holder, Kevin Stoute, Jonathan Carter, Dale Richards, Dwayne Smith, Dwayne Yearwood, Kenroy Williams, Patrick Browne (wk), Nikolai Charles, Corey Collymore, Pedro Collins and Tino Best.
