Uday Kaul and Sumeet Sharma struck solid half-centuries to inspire India Under-19s to a fine 82-run victory over Pakistan U-19s in the first one-dayer at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday.
India posted 250 in the allotted 50 overs after Riaz Kail, the Pakistan captain, won the toss and opted to field first. Pakistan, after a good start collapsed and were all out for 168 in 39.4 overs as the Indian bowlers broke the middle order with some hostile bowling.
Kaul was the top scorer with a quickfire 67 laced with seven boundaries and, together with Sharma (65) added 119 runs for the fifth wicket, bailing the side out of trouble as they were 4 for 31 at one stage. Sharma hammered three sixes and two fours in his 75-ball knock. Piyush Chawla (43), the captain, and Ravi Jadeja (32) were the other notable contributors for India. Mohammad Naved, the medium pacer, was the most effective bowler for Pakistan, picking up two wickets and conceding just 27 runs off his ten overs.
When Pakistan batted, they recovered quickly after losing the first wicket at nine as Jamal Anwar (39) and Fazal Subhan (33) added 71 for the second wicket. But as soon as the pair was dislodged the home side were in trouble, losing wickets without any meaningful contributions from their otherwise reliable middle-order batsmen.
Chawla, the legspinner, took 3 for 38 in eight overs, while Jadeja, the offspinner, captured two wickets.
