Return of form not enough for North and Western Australia

Marcus North's return to form was not enough to save the Western Australian Second XI from outright defeat in Hobart.

Western Australia lost the ACB Cup clash by seven wickets and remain fifth on the ladder and out of contention.

WA batted first in the four day match and made 293. North cracked an even 100 in 206 minutes from 154 balls with 16 boundaries.

The elegant right-hander has struggled for form in recent months but his ton shows selectors he is back on track.

All WA batsmen made a start on the flat Bellerive pitch but only North passed 30.

Ex-Western Warrior Shane Jurgensen took 3-77 from 23 overs.

In their first innings the Tasmanian Second XI openers put on 93 before Sean Cary made the breakthrough.

South African born Christopher Bassano produced an exquisite century from only 126 balls with 17 fours and a six. Bassano has played extensively in the English County system.

Cary was WA's top bowler with 4-69 from 32 overs. WA made 308 in their second innings with North making a half-century.

Jurgensen ripped through the line-up with 5-66 from 27.2 overs.

This left the Tigers a target of 214 for victory which they achieved with the loss of only three wickets.

Bassano produced another century cracking 113 from 105 balls. Cary completed an excellent double to claim 3-48.

This was WA's fifth ACB Cup outing this season.

They lost outright to South Australia then had first innings victories over the ACT and Victoria in rain marred encounters before an outright victory over NSW.
