Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting will enter hospital in Sydney on Thursday 9 March for surgery on his injured right ankle, which was damaged in a fielding mishap during the second final of the Carlton & United Series on 4 February 2000.
Ponting will have arthroscopic surgery on the injured ankle to repair cartilage damage. At the same time the surgeon will remove a bone fragment from the ankle and repair the damaged ligaments.
Ankle surgeon, Martin Sullivan, who will perform the operation, said that the surgery was necessary given that the injury had not responded to preliminary treatment.
"Ricky has sustained a high-energy injury. The ankle was given the opportunity to progress through physiotherapy but hasn't responded making this operation necessary," said Dr Sullivan.
Ponting said that he wanted to get back in time for the series against South Africa in August.
"The Australian team has a four month break coming up and while no-one looks forward to being operated on I just want to get the problem fixed to make sure that I'm back playing for Australia as soon as possible," said Ponting.
