John Slack is one of a small band of players who scored a hundred in their first first-class match, in his case for Cambridge University against Middlesex at the start of June 1954. He followed up with 63 in his second game - against Surrey - and 86 in his fourth at Worcester. He won his Blue that summer but his seven outings for Cambridge in a five-week spell constituted his entire first-class career. He was offered a contract by Middlesex but turned it down to pursue a legal career which culminated in him being appointed a circuit judge. He went on to play for Buckinghamshire and captained them to the Minor Counties Championship in 1969, and he also represented Middlesex at rugby.
