Edward van der Merwe was a superb allround sportsman who represented his university at rugby, football, athletics and cricket, going on to play cricket and rugby for Transvaal. A competent wicketkeeper, he toured England in 1929 and Australia and New Zealand in 1931-32 as understudy to Jock Cameron. His two Test appearances were six years apart - the first against England in 1929 and the second in Australia in 1935-36.
