A talented middle-order batsman and useful offspin bowler, Rory Hamilton-Brown made his debut for Surrey against Bangladesh A in 2005, but it was his 2008 move to Sussex that revived a career that was threatening to fizzle out. But few could have imagined the next turn when he was brought back to Surrey by Chris Adams and handed the captaincy at just 22 years of age, becoming the youngest Surrey captain for 138 years.

In 2011, Hamilton-Brown led Surrey to the Cyldesdale Bank 40 League title. His 78 from 62 balls helped Surrey to a five-wicket win over Somerset at Lord's. A week earlier, he led his side to promotion back to division one of the County Championship after a three-year absence.

Hamilton-Brown, whose godfather is Dennis Amiss, made his second XI debut in 2004 as a 16-year-old, scoring 84 against Sussex, and was selected for the England Under-19 tour of Bangladesh. Although a dreadfully disappointing tour for England, who lost all 11 matches, Hamilton-Brown performed well enough to earn a place at the Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka in February 2006.

He was named England U-19 captain for the 2006-07 winter tour of Malaysia, but couldn't play because of shoulder surgery - and then was on the brink of skippering them in the first Test against Pakistan in summer 2007, but was banned on the eve of the first Test then reinstated for the second.

A talented sportsman, he also played rugby union for Harlequins and England juniors and broke the batting record at Millfield school aged 16.
