Joseph Massey made his mark in the northern leagues immediately before and during the Great War, and afterwards he performed well for Littleborough and then Rochdale in the Central Lancashire League and finally with Blackpool where he played for 20 seasons. In 1933 he made his first-class debut for Sir Lionel Parkinson's XI against West Indies, scoring 11 and 20, and in 1935 for the same side against Leicestershire where he made 9 and 25. After a spell with Leyland Motors he became a publican at the Black Bull in Great Eccleston where he stayed for 41 years.
