Bill Barron was almost 30 by the time he made his first-class debut immediately after the Second World War, but between 1946 and 1950 he scored good runs in a side struggling for form. Although he played for Northamptonshire, his first-class debut was for Lancashire against Yorkshire in August 1945. A No. 3 or 4 batsman, Barron passed 1000 runs twice, in 1946 and 1947, and the highest of his six hundreds was 161* against Cambridge University in 1948. He lost his place in the side after a wretched start to the 1951 season and did not play again. Barron was also a talented footballer, with spells at Wolves and Charlton Athletic before he went to Northampton Town on a free transfer in 1938, managing one season before the War. A natural forward, he became a left back when football resumed and continued with Northampton until he retired in 1951.
