Probably no player has ever debuted for his state against such exalted opposition as Rob Quiney did in October 2005. He found himself called in to the Victoria team for the warm-up game against the ICC World XI at Melbourne's Junction Oval. He faced up to a bowling attack that featured Shoaib Akhtar, Shaun Pollock, Muttiah Muralitharan, Daniel Vettori and Makhaya Ntini.

Quiney can brag that none of them dismissed him but he has little else to boast about from that match, as he was run out for 3. In 2006-07, he broke into Victoria's one-day team and missed only two games, and the following season his most amazing display came against a star-studded New South Wales at the MCG, when he hammered 89 from 57 balls. Facing Brett Lee for the first time in his career, Quiney did not take a backward step and repeatedly pulled and hooked him for boundaries. He produced his maiden first-class century in 2008-09 - 127 against Queensland - and enjoyed a solid summer that also featured a brilliant 91 from 56 balls in the Twenty20 final. That helped him earn a contract with Rajasthan Royals, and he also won a surprise call-up to Australia's Twenty20 squad that took on New Zealand in February 2009, although he couldn't break into the starting line-up.

A talented left-hand batsman, Quiney followed up a below-par 2009-10 season, in which he was in and out of the Victoria side in all formats, with a solid Sheffield Shield showing in 2010-11 - he was in particularly fine form against Tasmania, scoring two hundreds and an unbeaten half-century against them in four innings. He had just one major highlight in the 2009-10 season: a career-best 153, also against Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield.

Quiney signed with Auckland for New Zealand's domestic Twenty20 tournament in 2010-11, and following the side's triumph in the competition, travelled with them to India for the Champions League T20 in September. A powerful, clean striker, Quiney needs only to add consistency to his game in order to take the next step.
