Champions League Twenty20 - 1st match, Group B

Lions v Mumbai Indians

Lions won by 9 runs

5.30pm Alviro Petersen and Jonathan Vandiar, the Lions openers, stride out. Ryan McLaren to start for Mumbai.

"Batsmen are you ready?, Sachin are you ready?, scorers are you ready? South Africa lets start Super League Twenty20," says Rudi Koertzen, managing to forget what tournament he's standing in.

5.25pm For those of you asking, IPL teams can have a maximum of four overseas players in their XI.

Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating. We're nearly set for the start, the umpires are walking onto the field right now.

This is Siddarth Ravindran bringing you the commentary, Sanjay Murari is the scorer.

5.15pm Still 15 minutes away from the first ball. Check out Sidharth Monga's match preview.

Nick from UK: "I can't believe the Lions have left out Jean Symes. His batting style is ideal for T20." My mailbox flooded with people complaining about the line-ups.

5.10pm Enrique Iglesias, the star of the opening ceremony, is treating the crowd to "Just wanna be with you" (at least that's what I think the song is called).

Ajay from India sends in the first feedback of the tournament: "Surprising to see Ali Murtaza in place of Saurabh Tiwary! Is Abhishek Nayar not available?" Abhishek Nayar isn't in Mumbai's 15-man squad.

And now Iglesias is belting out "I like it" which is the tournament's theme song. Meanwhile, Pakistan have made a solid start to their chase in Chester-le-Street, reaching 43 for 0 in the ninth over. Click here for ball-by-ball description of that match.

5.00pm We are getting set for the toss. President Jacob Zuma is on the field.

Sachin Tendulkar: "It's a fabulous experience, we look forward to the tournament, since we meet all the top teams in the world."

Alviro Petersen: "The boys are ready for the tournament, we have spent a lot of time preparing for the event. We'll hopefully bring our A game today. We stuck to the same team that played in the final of the Pro20."

President Jacob Zuma flips the coin, Mumbai Indians win the toss, a loud roar from the crowd on hearing that. Mumbai to bowl.

Tendulkar: "We were forced to leave out Sourabh Tiwary since he has a niggle."

Lions 1 Jonathan Vandiar, 2 Neil McKenzie, 3 Alviro Petersen (capt.), 4 Richard Cameron, 5 Vaughn van Jaarsveld, 6 Zander de Bruyn, 7 Thami Tsolekile (wk), 8 Robert Frylinck, 9 Shane Burger, 10 Aaron Phangiso, 11 Ethan O'Reilly

Mumbai Indians Shikhar Dhawan, Sachin Tendulkar (capt), Ambati Rayudu (wk), JP Duminy, R Sathish, Kieron Pollard, Ryan McLaren, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Lasith Malinga, Ali Murtuza.

4.50pm Mumbai have plenty of guys coming back from injury - Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Kieron Pollard - so it will be interesting to see how they perform.

I'm told the average first-innings total at the Wanderers is 153, but there might be some assistance off the pitch early on.

Ten minutes to go for the toss.

4.40pm It looks like a bit of a mismatch looking at the squads - Mumbai crammed with big stars while Lions have only a few names most readers will recognise. Lions captain Alviro Petersen has said all those big names means the pressure will be on Mumbai. Also, the Lions will know the pitch at the Wanderers inside out, and the IPL teams didn't do particularly well in the inaugural CLT20 which means an interesting game lies ahead.

It's early summer in South Africa, the outfield has a tinge of green and the pitch may not be as quick as the traditional Wanderers track.

4.30pm Hello and welcome to the second Champions League Twenty20. The first game is between the Mumbai Indians and the home team, Highveld Lions.

Thanks Sid R. Frenetic start here.. Malinga comes on, can he make a breakthrough?

10.1

Malinga to van Jaarsveld, 2 runs, searing yorker, slightly mis-directed ended on the left-hander's pads and he clipped it nicely to deep midwicket.. a little uppish, but safe

10.2

Malinga to van Jaarsveld, 1 wide, goes for the bouncer, hurls it very short and it goes high and down the leg-side, rightly called a wide by ump Koertzen

10.2

Malinga to van Jaarsveld, no run, slower ball, 120.1 kph, and pitched up on off stump line, the batsman picked it, waited for it and opened the face but could not get it past point

10.3

Malinga to van Jaarsveld, no run, again very fullish on the toes, crunched down the ground but straight to mid on

10.4

Malinga to van Jaarsveld, OUT, seeya later! Malinga has made a crucial breakthrough, sending back van Jaarsveld here. Pitched up on off stump line, the batsman took up the challenge and looked to launch it down the ground, but ended up scooping it straight up and high.. When it came down, Ryan McLaren was under it.

11.3

Sourav 'Dada' Ganguly in the commentary box, and he sounds eerily similar to Russel Arnold.. Ho hum.

Kieron Pollard to bowl.

12.1

Pollard to McKenzie, 1 run, slow and short, finishes on the pads and it is pulled down to square leg.. could have done more damage with that

12.2

Pollard to Vandiar, 1 run, tucked away off the pads towards lon leg, another single for Vandiar

12.3

Pollard to McKenzie, FOUR, shot! A rare non-violent boundary in this foimat. Short and just wide outside off, McKenzie waited, rose with the bounce and cut it between point and cover and it raced across the turf for four

12.4

Pollard to McKenzie, 1 run, slow and short outside off, 110 kph, McKenzie taps it in front of point for another single

12.5

Pollard to Vandiar, 1 run, Vandiar drives into the off side for another single into the covers. Good recovery from an indifferent start for the Lions, 100 is up.

12.6

Rajagopal Satish to bowl his medium pacers..

13.1

Sathish to Vandiar, 1 run, begins on Vandiar's pads and he tucks it towards midwicket to pick a single

13.2

Sathish to McKenzie, 1 run, good line, back of a length outside off, McKenzie taps it expertly behind square on the off side to turn the strike

13.3

Sathish to Vandiar, SIX, Up, up and oooover!! Vandiar picks the length early, it was a nothing ball well wide outside off and Vandiar launched it over extra cover, smooth, elegant flow of the arms, reminiscent of Ganguly who is in the commentary box. That's his fifty!

13.4

Sathish to Vandiar, 2 runs, played between long on and midwicket for a couple.. Good innings this and ominous.

13.5

Sathish to Vandiar, 1 run, slower ball on off, and he gets something on it despite not picking the lack of pace.. single straight to point

13.6

Sathish to McKenzie, FOUR, whoa, very slow from Satish and still McKenzie was late on the hoick-swipe to the leg side.. Gets a top edge that flies very fine towards third man for four

14.1

Pollard to Vandiar, FOUR, shot! Vandiar reminds me of two left-handers - Alistair Campbell and Chris Harris - and there were shades of both in that shot.. He hops out of the crease to full ball, converts it into a half-volley and lofts it confidently straight over Pollard's head. Supa shot.

14.2

Pollard to Vandiar, 1 run, shortens the length, wise decision, Vandiar opens the face and runs it behind point for one

14.3

Pollard to McKenzie, FOUR, the Lions are-a-roaring! Poor ball from Pollard, short and standing up - McKenzie tucks in greedily, pulls it expertly and along the carpet in front of square and it scurries over the ropes at midwicket

14.4

Pollard to McKenzie, 1 run, slightly fuller outside off, McKenzie cuts it in front of point for one more

14.5

Pollard to Vandiar, 1 run, on Vandiar's pads, and he does not seem to be the kind that cashes in on those.. just works it off the legs for one

14.6

Pollard to McKenzie, 1 wide, whoa, McKenzie was moving about in the crease, Pollard saw him and followed him, but ended up pushing it wide down the leg side, Rayudu jumps across like a goallie to save it

Koushik sends a fair comment. "wonder why SRT is rotating with all his part-timers when his frontline bowlers still have their quota of overs. Zak n Slinga have 2 overs each and Mclaren has 3 !!" Even I am befuddled, friend.

Zaheer comes on.

15.1

Khan to McKenzie, no run, super yorker to begin proceedings, McKenzie tried to bring the bat down at the last moment, but he was late on it.. Good for him that it was not directed at the stumps, just outside off

15.2

Khan to McKenzie, 2 runs, a hint of room outside off, McKenzie reaches out and drives behind square, Satish fumbles at point and concedes a couple. Fifty stand up, well played!

15.3

Khan to McKenzie, no run, another yorker and again McKenzie can't do much outside off. Expert stuff from Zaheer

15.4

Khan to McKenzie, 1 run, goes for yet another yorker, finishes a slow fulltoss on middle and leg, McKenzie manages to dig it out and Zaheer can't stop it.. Single to long on

15.5

Khan to Vandiar, 1 run, pacy short ball, 137.4 kph from Zaheer and Vandiar was hurried into the pull, just about saved it from crashing into his midriff and picked a single to midwicket

15.6

Khan to McKenzie, FOUR, well played Neil McKenzie! He has struggled to deal with Zaheer's yorkers, but this time he was waiting for it.. Just a hint of room on this yorker outside off, McKenzie stayed his ground and opened the face to redirect it to the third man fence.

16.1

Malinga to Vandiar, 2 runs, whangs it full and fast but outside off, crunched out straight to Pollard at point who goes for a direct hit at the bowler's end and misses.. And ythey pick the overthrow!

16.2

Malinga to Vandiar, SIX, 1..2..3..4..5.. and it lands! It stayed in the air for five full seconds by my reckoning and covered 87 metres in the process! Malinga was looking for the yorker but eneded up serving a half-volley on middle, Vandiar picked it, and with one violent swish of the wrists, sent it halfway to the moon, before it landed miles behind midwicket. SHOT!

16.3

Malinga to Vandiar, OUT, and gone! Another half-volley on middle stump, Vandiar generated tremendous power with his carve, but could not get it past Tendulkar who pouched it without fuss. Super knock comes to an end.

16.5

Malinga to McKenzie, 1 run, attempted yorker finishes a low fulltoss on McKenzie's middle and leg.. he calmly redirects it with a flick to square leg

16.6

Malinga to Frylinck, OUT, Vandiar for the main course, Frylinck for dessert.. Malinga finishes a delicious over with another inch-perfect yorker and Frylinck perishes as he tries to make room to the leg side and steer it to the offside.. Good that he made room, his toes were saved.

Murtaza to McKenzie, FOUR, top shot! Fuller outside off, McKenzie makes room enough to crunch it out through the covers with great timing, and Dhawan ran across from third man and put in the dive, but no luck saving that

17.3

Murtaza to McKenzie, 1 run, shortens the length, he taps it out to mid off and picks a single

17.4

Murtaza to de Bruyn, no run, good ball, full and fast on middle and off and de Bruyn can't do much with it.. Played back to the bowler

17.5

Murtaza to de Bruyn, no run, and again, he is retrieving this over which started quite badly.. another full and fast ball and the new batsman can't get it past the bowler

17.6

Murtaza to de Bruyn, 2 runs, finally gets it away, through the off side for a single.. Murtaza misses the return and they steal an overthrow.. Mumbai are not fielding too well are they?

End of over 18 (11 runs) Lions 158/5 (RR: 8.77)
Z de Bruyn    2* (3b)      AG Murtaza    4-0-28-1
ND McKenzie    38* (22b 6x4)      SL Malinga    3-0-22-3

18.1

Malinga to McKenzie, 2 runs, Another overthrow, this is embarrassing from Mumbai! Harbhajan throws needlessly, no one is backing up and McKenzie loots a second run to reclaim strike

18.2

Malinga to McKenzie, 1 run, this time he plays it off the pads to the leg side for a single

18.3

Malinga to de Bruyn, 1 run, low full toss, finishes on leg stump, and de Bruyn times it pretty well down to long on off the backfoot for a single

18.4

Malinga to McKenzie, FOUR, Smashed! Malinga is going for the high-risk option of yorkers and so far it has been a mixed return.. this time it was a half-volley and McKenzie is waiting for these. Jumps at it once he sees it is in the hitting zone and scythes it high over midwicket. Four more

18.5

Malinga to McKenzie, 2 runs, better from Malinga, even better from McKenzie! Gets the yorker in on middle and off, McKenzie's minimal footwork commits nothing and he deftly opens the face ot send it towards third man to pick two more

18.6

Malinga to McKenzie, 1 run, finishes with a better yorker, McKenzie is up to the task of flicking it square to take a single and retain strike for the last over

End of over 19 (11 runs) Lions 169/5 (RR: 8.89)
ND McKenzie    48* (27b 7x4)      SL Malinga    4-0-33-3

Zaheer to bowl the last over!

19.1

Khan to McKenzie, SIX, BRUTALIZED! Zaheer bowls it short and though it is angling across, McKenzie's initial movement suggests he is always waiting to play the pull. Plays it really well this time, goes in the air and sends it flying into the Jo'burg night!

19.2

Khan to McKenzie, 1 run, picks a single and turns the strike over..

19.3

Khan to de Bruyn, FOUR, de Bruyn this time! Zak misses the yorker, and de Bruyn staying well back, and backing to the leg side converts it into a hanf volley and drills it straight down the ground. Four more, Lions are flying away here!

19.4

Khan to de Bruyn, 1 run, looks to move across and play the shovel scoop, but Zak keeps it full on off stump, and de Bruyn can't do much except pick a single to the leg side of the pitch

19.5

Khan to McKenzie, 1 run, full on middle and leg, McKenzie lashes it to the leg side but can't evade Tendulkar at short midwicket

19.6

Khan to de Bruyn, FOUR, Nailed by de Bruyn! Lions have finished with a flourish here, 132 kph poor length ball from Zaheer, this is a forgettable comeback for him.. de Bruyn was hoping it won't be the yorker and was setting himself up for something off target.. and he got what he wanted, it was in his zone on leg stump and he thumped it over the infield between long on and deep midwicket for four.

Sid Ravindran will take over commentary for the first half of what promises to be an intriguing chase. Meanwhile Sid Monga is typing out the thrills and spills of the innings and he bulletin should be up shortly. And this is Sid Mallya's new blog.

Right, Mumbai will be very disappointed with the way that innings panned out. They had Lions on the ropes early on, but Vandiar and McKenzie turned things around with alarming ease. This will not be an easy chase under the Bullring lights.

End of over 20 (17 runs) Lions 186/5
Z de Bruyn    12* (7b 2x4)      Z Khan    4-0-45-0
ND McKenzie    56* (30b 7x4 1x6)      SL Malinga    4-0-33-3
