Champions League Twenty20, 4th Match, Group B: Lions v South Australia at Centurion, Sep 12, 2010
Champions League Twenty20 - 4th match, Group B
South Australia won by 11 runs
12 September 2010 (20-over match)

Bandor retaliates to the discussion on team names: "How about Cricinfo Chatterboxes!" Enough already! Time for action. Klinger walks out to open the innings with Harris, Coetsee has the ball so spin straight away.

12.56pm We are close to the start here, time for introductions. Sid Monga is on the bulletin, while Gopi Rangarajan is on scoring duty. The commentary is being shared between myself, Nitin Sundar, and Sid Ravindran.

Both teams are sporting red jerseys - doesn't happen too often in our sport does it?

Ian Bishop reports on the pitch: Early season here, so it is not so firm as it can be, but it should be a decent T20 pitch.. The outfield was used as a camping ground during the football World Cup, so there are some rough patches. The toss has not been very crucial in the past - evenly matched between teams batting first or second.

12.50pm I also long for the day when we can have more out-of-the-box names for these franchises. The Polar Possums.. The Timbucktoo Tapirs.. The Desperate Door-handles.. The Kolkata Knight Riders.. No wait.. Oh, whatever.

12.41pm Piyush Sharma starts with the zoological references. "Lions will certainly want to eat some Kangaroo curry!!" Sunder responds: "Kangaroo's kick can even kill a lion." Mike joins the party with more etymology: "Piyush, it should be remembered that the Lions are not playing against Kangaroos but against Redbacks, which are deadly Australian spiders, whose bite can kill a man. Not sure if they can kill a lion...but I suppose we will find out tonight."

Well, personally I can't wait for the day when the Lions go up against the Central Districts "Stags". Violence assured.

12.39pm Meanwhile Pakistan's tour of England goes on.. Pakistan's top order is not doing too badly in the second ODI. Gnasher McGlashan is on the report from Headingley.

Toss: Lions win and Alviro Petersen elects to bowl. The big news is that Shane Burger, the man who hit the stumps of Sachin Tendulkar, and then yorked Kieron Pollard the other night, is injured and misses out. Guess we will have to settle for pizza tonight. Werner Coetsee, the offspinning allrounder comes in for him.

Michael Klinger, the Redbacks captain: "Happy to bat first. There has been a lot of competition for spots.. there is a good spirit in the side."

12.27pm Graham Manou, the wicketkeeper who has played a Test and 4 ODIs for Australia, plays for the Redbacks. The other familiar name in the side is the batsman Callum Ferguson who has featured in the shorter versions at the highest level. Their Big Bash run was helped by two huge overseas signings - Kieron Pollard and Shahid Afridi - who are not playing for them here. But then, Twenty20 is not a format that needs big names. Or as Suresh Raina said yesterday, "In T20, anything can happen".

12.15pm Welcome to Game 4 of the Champions League - the Highveld Lions who made a fine start to their campaign in the opening match of the tournament, take on the South Australia Redbacks in Centurion. SA finished second in the Big Bash, losing to Victoria in the finals, and come here with a young side. The biggest name in their ranks is Shaun Tait, and it should be fun to see him up against that man, Jonathan Vandiar, who blasted Mumbai to all corners the other day. Toss coming up in 15 mins. Meanwhile do check out Abhishek Purohit's preview to the game.

Coetsee to Harris, no run, length ball turns in from outside off, defended into the covers

Coetsee to Harris, no run, and that's that for sighters! Down the track and looks to heave across the line, gets an inside edge down to short fine leg and nearly runs himself out, but back in time

Coetsee to Harris, FOUR, over-pitched outside off and crunched out by Harris who picks the gap at cover for the first four

Coetsee to Harris, 1 run, over-pitched on middle and flicked uppishly between mid on and the bowler for one

Coetsee to Klinger, no run, works it with the spin towards midwicket..

Coetsee to Klinger, no run, almost holes out to mid off! Klinger comes out of the crease, gets too close to the pitch and off-drives uppishly.. lands a couple of feet in front of mid off

End of over 1 (5 runs) South Australia 5/0 (RR: 5.00)

    • M Klinger 0 (2b)
    • DJ Harris 5 (4b 1x4)

Frylinck comes on

Frylinck to Harris, no run, hits the deck nicely outside off to begin with, batsman shapes to cut but makes no concact.. good carry, no movement

Frylinck to Harris, FOUR, errs on the fuller side and Harris shows his cover-driving prowess once again.. Timed very well, found the gap in the off side and it scurried along the turf for four

Frylinck to Harris, no run, more like it, shifts back to back of a length outside off and gets disconcerting rise as Harris looks to cut.. Two slips watch it closely as it passes into the keeper's gloves

Frylinck to Harris, no run, comes down the track this time, but the length is still too short for the drive.. Harris tries to play through with the hands, but no contact

Frylinck to Harris, no run, smart change of pace, 115 kph and not there to be driven.. Beats Harris as he gets into the shot early and makes no contact

Frylinck to Harris, 1 run, on a length this time, Harris presses across into the square cut and gets it down to third man

End of over 2 (5 runs) South Australia 10/0 (RR: 5.00)

    • DJ Harris 10 (10b 2x4)
    • M Klinger 0 (2b)
    • R Frylinck 1-0-5-0
    • WL Coetsee 1-0-5-0

Another bowling change - O'Reilly comes on.

O'Reilly to Harris, no run, good line, skids into the right-hander, cramping him for room to drive and the length is not there for the flick. Played to the leg side safely

O'Reilly to Harris, no run, and more disconcerting bounce, that takes off from a length and Harris' attempt to cover drive without reaching the pitch of the ball does not work

O'Reilly to Harris, 2 runs, flat-batted away like he were swatting a fly! Short again, banged pretty short outside off but Harris was pushing out and went through with it.. Airy, but safe and straight down the ground

O'Reilly to Harris, 1 run, and again, Harris is committing to the front foot compulsively here, and the bowler is keeping it short, so the pull shot is going nowhere.. This one bobs up and lands just in front of mid on

O'Reilly to Klinger, FOUR, ah hard luck, O'Reilly is bowling a good line outside off, Klinger fishes nervously outside off and gets a thick edge away from the slip

O'Reilly to Klinger, no run

End of over 3 (7 runs) South Australia 17/0 (RR: 5.66)

    • M Klinger 4 (4b 1x4)
    • DJ Harris 13 (14b 2x4)
    • E O'Reilly 1-0-7-0
    • R Frylinck 1-0-5-0

Frylinck to Harris, no run, another good ball from Frylinck, back of a length outside off and Harris is looking a little clueless when it is not pitched up

Frylinck to Harris, no run, advances this time to reach the pitch, but Frylinck sticks to his guns and keeps it short. Eases it out without much timing towards point

Frylinck to Harris, no run, Nearly sold him the dummy there! Frylinck goes for the very full ball, but Harris was stuck in the crease expecting another short one and plays the kind of shot you would expect from a deer caught in the flashlights.. Nothing drive, no contact and it goes right through him.

Frylinck to Harris, OUT, well, this was on the cards. Frylinck bowls the same length, very full, and again Harris is concerned that it will be a short one and is caught on the crease. This one was straighter and rapped him in front. Looked plumb.

DJ Harris lbw b Frylinck 13 (12m 18b 2x4 0x6) SR: 72.22

Manou comes out.

Frylinck to Manou, no run, another full one from Frylinck, angles into Manou who works it off the toes to midwicket

Frylinck to Manou, 1 run, smart little offcutter, 113kph outside off and gets the inside edge as Manou comes forward to drive. Thuds into the pads and runs into the off side and they get a single

End of over 4 (1 run) South Australia 18/1 (RR: 4.50)

    • GA Manou 1 (2b)
    • M Klinger 4 (4b 1x4)
    • R Frylinck 2-0-6-1
    • E O'Reilly 1-0-7-0

O'Reilly to Manou, no run, very full and a hint of away swing outside off, sucks the batsman into the cover drive and then darts away and misses the edge

O'Reilly to Manou, no run, pulls the length back marginally, but it is that McGrath line, and the batsman wisely lets it go

O'Reilly to Manou, no run, driven out with more assurance to mid off, but Manous still can't get off the mark

O'Reilly to Manou, no run, motions out of the crease, but O'Reilly is keeping it back of a length, and that was pacy too - 140 kph - Manou pushes it out to cover

O'Reilly to Manou, 1 run, big forward and across press to work the ball around his pads from the off stump line towards midwicket.

Ravi does not like monochrome: "Both Lions and Redbacks are wearing red jearseys. Why can't the teams have 2 jerseys of different contrasts (like they do in Football). This way we can ensure the teams have jerseys of different contrast"

O'Reilly to Klinger, no run, short ball outside off and another out-of-position pull that misses.. Swishes at thin air as it goes through to the keeper

End of over 5 (1 run) South Australia 19/1 (RR: 3.80)

    • M Klinger 4 (5b 1x4)
    • GA Manou 2 (7b)
    • E O'Reilly 2-0-8-0

Nervous start for the spiders. The big cats have called the shots so far. de Bruyn comes on.

de Bruyn to Manou, no run, pitched up outside off and the right-hander reaches out to drive, but can't elude cover

de Bruyn to Manou, 1 run, more desperation from Manou, he comes out towards off stump and shover pulls it towards mid on for a single

de Bruyn to Klinger, SIX, and finally, one flew over the cuckoo's nest. It was over-pitched and Klinger latched on with palpable relief and in his joy hit that really high. It had the distance too and landed well behind the straight boundary

de Bruyn to Klinger, 2 runs, shorter and wider outside off, mindful of the drive. Klinger is up to it and cuts it square to pick a couple

de Bruyn to Klinger, 1 run, even shorter this time, and it is taken head high by Tsolekile standing up to the stumps. Kilnger was trying to dab it to third man, and picks a single

de Bruyn to Manou, FOUR, Smarts! Manou motions across again and takes it from the middle stump line. It was very full and he could redirect it fine past the short fine-leg fielder for four.

End of over 6 (14 runs) South Australia 33/1 (RR: 5.50)

    • GA Manou 7 (10b 1x4)
    • M Klinger 13 (8b 1x4 1x6)
    • Z de Bruyn 1-0-14-0
    • E O'Reilly 2-0-8-0

Phangiso to Klinger, FOUR, airy cut shot, but he finds the gap just about as it turns away from outside off. A little air and width from Phangiso, enough for Klinger

Phangiso to Klinger, 1 run, fuller on middle and he drives it down to long on to turn the strike

Phangiso to Manou, 2 runs, back of a length on the leg stump and Manou taps it very deftly towards the vacant square leg area to steal two

Phangiso to Manou, no run, steps out, Phangiso saw him coming and pulled it back a tad, drives out to the covers

Phangiso to Manou, 1 run, straighter one, hurries on from middle stump line and he cuts it against the break towards cover for one

Phangiso to Klinger, 1 run, on middle and leg to finish off, worked away softly towards mid on

End of over 7 (9 runs) South Australia 42/1 (RR: 6.00)

    • M Klinger 19 (11b 2x4 1x6)
    • GA Manou 10 (13b 1x4)

End of the Powerplays.. Redbacks have recovered a bit, but need to push on.

Cameron to Klinger, 1 run, back of a length outside off, really slow too - 104 kph - and pulled down to wide long on

Cameron to Manou, 1 run, fuller on off stump line and driven down to long on for another single

Cameron to Klinger, 1 run, over-pitched outside off stump and it is square driven nicely, but not placed too well. Sweeper cleans up.

Cameron to Manou, 1 run, on middle and leg, length ball at 118 kph, and it is flicked away to cow corner. More urgency required.

Cameron to Klinger, FOUR, that's what I am talking about. There isn't much pace on these balls and Klinger finally places one of those pull shots, taking it from outside off and bisecting the midwicket boundary

Cameron to Klinger, 1 run, slower ball, if you may, he is bowling really slow to begin with, on the pads and driven down the ground for a single

End of over 8 (9 runs) South Australia 51/1 (RR: 6.37)

    • M Klinger 26 (15b 3x4 1x6)
    • GA Manou 12 (15b 1x4)
    • R Cameron 1-0-9-0
    • AM Phangiso 1-0-9-0

Phangiso to Klinger, 1 run, fired in on the pads and deftly flicked away square for one

Phangiso to Manou, OUT, talk about digging your own grave! Manou had decided early to walk away to the off side, expose his stumps and play the paddle scoop. The ball was outside off and short, so not the best delivery for the shot he had chosen. But Manou was not going to change his plan - went through with a backfoot paddle scoop, and ended up getting a leading edge that landed in short third man's hands. That was funny!

GA Manou c Cameron b Phangiso 12 (16m 16b 1x4 0x6) SR: 75.00

Phangiso to Ferguson, 1 run, flighted on middle and off, leans out and drives it to mid off for one. Ferguson is away.

Phangiso to Klinger, 1 run, and again, driven out cautiously down the ground for one

Phangiso to Ferguson, 1 run, on middle and leg this time, and driven off the front foot to long on for one more

Phangiso to Klinger, 1 run, short and outside off, goes for the cut and picks a single to the sweeper

End of over 9 (5 runs) South Australia 56/2 (RR: 6.22)

Coetsee comes back on.

Coetsee to Klinger, no run, offie turning in from back of a length outside off, delicately worked to short third man and they think of a naughty single before changing their minds

Coetsee to Klinger, SIX, Bham! Klinger waltzes down the pitch and gets to the pitch.. It was flighted outside off, so he had the room to flex his muscles and shovel-swept it high over midwicket. He's playing well now, the skipper

Coetsee to Klinger, 1 run, taps a single down to long on to turn the strike over

Coetsee to Ferguson, 1 run, Length ball on middle and off, Ferguson turns it with the spin towards midwicket

Coetsee to Klinger, no run, strange.. forward defensive to a length ball turning in from outside off

Coetsee to Klinger, 1 run, over-pitched on leg stump and worked away wide of mid on for one

Coetsee to Klinger, 1 run, driven all along the ground towards long-off for a single

Coetsee to Ferguson, 1 run, Ferguson also tries the reverse-sweep, he has better connection than Klinger, the ball runs towards short third man

de Bruyn to Ferguson, FOUR, length ball just outside off, Ferguson prefers this moveing away from legstump policy, this gives him enough room to loft the ball over cover this time, picks up a boundary

de Bruyn to Ferguson, FOUR, attempted yorker gone wrong, turns into a full toss on legstump, easy put away for Ferguson, sent to the fine leg boundary

de Bruyn to Ferguson, FOUR, three in a row for Ferguson, Petersen looks a bit worried, it was a full ball on legstump, Ferguson backed away and got it past the short fine leg for four, deep backward square leg ran across and dived but couldn't cut it off

Ferguson surveys the field

O'Reilly to Ferguson, FOUR, again he back away, it was very full and just outside off, Ferguson had to reach across to get that one, he bends and carves it behind point for four more, nice placement there

O'Reilly to Ferguson, no run, short ball this time, again Ferguson wasn't exactly in a good position to play that after moving away to leg, an ungainly tap towards the off side

O'Reilly to Ferguson, FOUR, a power forehand that wouldn't be out of place in the US Open, he absolutely hammers that short one past mid-off for four

O'Reilly to Ferguson, 2 runs, gets this only down to long-on for two more, Ferguson piling on the runs here

Frylinck to Ferguson, 1 run, full and on legstump, flicked towards deep midwicket for a single, Ferguson has galloped to 46

Frylinck to Klinger, SIX, Klinger joins in the fun, with a humungous hit over deep midwicket, it wa poor delivery that, a juicy full toss on legstump

Frylinck to Klinger, SIX, Frylinck bounces it this time but its the same result, Klinger dispatches it flat over deep backward square leg

Frylinck to Klinger, 1 run, whipped towards the man at deep midwicket

Frylinck to Ferguson, 1 wide, a slow bouncer angling into the batsman's body, Ferguson takes his eyes off the ball as he look to swipe that one, misses

Frylinck to Ferguson, 1 run, OUT, is that the breakthrough Lions desperately needed? yorker outside off, Ferguson moves way outside leg, punches the ball towards long-off, batsmen decide to zip back for the second, the throw wasn't exactly over the stumps, but at a good height for the keeper's left, he break the stumps and Ferguson's last-ditch dive isn't enough to save him

CJ Ferguson run out 47 (34m 27b 7x4 0x6) SR: 174.07

Frylinck to Christian, FOUR, first ball for Christian, he thumps it over the bowler's head for a boundary, nice way to get the eye in

Gareth from Australia says: "It's great to see Ferguson back in the limelight. Talentend young man who's injuries have kept him out of the national side of late. Deceptively strong too!"

de Bruyn to Klinger, SIX, Klinger gets his front leg out of the way and sends the full ball on legstump way over long-on for six more, what a recovery from South Australia this is

de Bruyn to Klinger, OUT, what a stunning catch to end Klinger's innings, he hammers it off the backfoot towards long-on, it was a flat hit, Petersen leaps about a yard inside the boundary to latch onto that one, he falls awkwardly after taking the catch but the ball remains safely in his left hand

M Klinger c Petersen b de Bruyn 78 (67m 48b 6x4 5x6) SR: 162.50

de Bruyn to Christian, 1 run, low full toss on middle and leg, driven firmly to long-off

de Bruyn to Borgas, 1 wide, the slow bouncer outside off, deceives the batsman who has to change his shot, he looks to uppercut it but misses, it's a wide anyway

de Bruyn to Borgas, 1 run, full on the pads, clipped down to fine leg for a single

de Bruyn to Christian, 2 runs, strange-looking shot that, length ball outside off, batsman bends and plays a cross-batted shot along the ground towards long-on

de Bruyn to Christian, 1 run, a full toss on middle stump, Christian puts a lot of effort as he smacks the ball towards long-off, doesn't time it too well and the ball doesn't travel too quickly to the man in the deep

End of over 19 (12 runs) South Australia 165/4 (RR: 8.68)

    • DT Christian 8 (4b 1x4)
    • CJ Borgas 1 (1b)

Final over coming up. Can the Redbacks make it to 180?

Frylinck to Christian, 2 runs, superb bit of fielding at long-on there, superb strike from Christian sends the full ball outside leg zipping towards the boundary, the fielder was quickly across to his right to cut that off

Frylinck to Christian, 1 run, only a single this time as the ball goes towards the fielder at long-on again

Frylinck to Borgas, 1 run, OUT, Frylinck keeps it full, batsman moves away and whips it to long-on, pushing for the second which wasn't there, Christian had raced back to the second run, so the throw had to go to the keeper's end, it does and Borgas is well short

CJ Borgas run out 2 (6m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Frylinck to Cooper, SIX, a slower ball, length and the ball kind of mishits it towards long-on, Petersen nearly pulled off a miraculous effort to top his catch from the previous over, a leap at long-on helped him get his right hand on the ball, he was looking to parry it back in since his jump was going to take him over the rope, couldn't pull it off

Frylinck to Cooper, 1 leg bye, full toss on the pads, going down the legstump, batsmen scamper a leg-bye

Frylinck to Christian, 1 wide, OUT, another wicket goes down, in comical fashion, full toss down the leg side, non-striker was racing for the single, the batsman wasn't, both men are the same end, the keeper was trying to throw it to the non-striker's end but it hits the batsman, still both are at the same end, then Cooper makes an attempt to get to the non-striker's end, the keeper has time to run up pick the ball and pass it to the bowler, who completes the run out

TLW Cooper run out 6 (2m 2b 0x4 1x6) SR: 300.00

Frylinck to Christian, 1 run, is that yet another run-out? through to the keeper again, who underarms a direct-hit, but Aaron O'Brien's dive is enough to allow South Australia a bye, they finish on 178 which is a very decent score

South Australia will be very satisfied with that score especially after plodding along in the initial part of their innings. Phangiso choked the runs in the middle section but the partnership between Callum Ferguson and Michale Klinger transformed the innings, with some intelligent batting - not just mindless swipes - helping them pick 97 off 57 deliveries.

Cricket writer Trevor Chesterfield has this to say about Aaron Phangiso: "He comes from a sprawling township outside Tshwane/Pretoria called Soshanguve and when selected for the Northerns youth side for the national under13 week in Cape Town, his father bought him tennis shoes as he had not seen a game of cricket. His all-round talent won him a scholarship to CBC College, Mount Edmund, Pretoria. He did play for Northerns Titans and captained the Northerns A side for a season. It seems Dave Nosworthy, the Guateng Lions coach who knows the Phangsio background well, has lured him to the Wanderers. He is a talented, lovely kid, and even a good squash player."
