Champions League Twenty20, 15th Match, Group B: Mumbai Indians v Royal Challengers Bangalore at Durban, Sep 19, 2010
Champions League Twenty20 - 15th match, Group B
Mumbai Indians won by 2 runs
Played at Kingsmead, Durban (neutral venue)
19 September 2010 - day/night match (20-over match)

5.29pm Now that all those doubts are cleared, time for some action! SRT and Dhawan walk out, Bangalore run in to take their positions. Praveen has the ball. Three slips in.

Ravikanth: "Are George Binoy and Binoy George two different people? If so, are they twins? Are the Sids triplets seperated at birth? The confused millions want to know..." Answers - Yes, no and no!

5.26pm Kapil: "Ok..Now I know there are two Sids.. Talya and Ravi..I did not get my answer yesterday.." Wrong! There are three if you count the world's fastest consumer of dinners - Sid Monga. And not too long back, we also had Sidvee aka Sid Vaidyanathan.

Time for introductions. This is Nitin Sundar starting off the commentary for the game. My colleagues, the Sids - Talya and Ravindran - will join in later. Venkat Raghav and Binoy George are on scoring duty.

Priyansh, the optimistic Mumbai fan sends in this inquiry. "Can anyone tell me if it will be possible for MI to still be in race even if their NRR is lower then other 2 teams after this match?" The answer is no. If Mumbai win by a margin that does not take their NRR above Lions, their campaign is effectively over. Then Lions v Bangalore will be a virtual quarterfinal. Hope Mumbai does well for Priyansh's sake, he is watching the game instead of preparing for exams at IIM Shillong.

5.12pm Yogesh: "Dhawan has been unable to start quickly and in turn putting pressure on Sachin. Bravo did well as an opener in IPL-2 at SA and it might be worth the gamble to open with him." Good observations, but Mumbai have stuck with Dhawan. Will he survive and score against Steyn and co.?

Simon and Santhana Krishnan make a pertinent point. The gist is that Mumbai have the lowest NRR among the three teams, which will make their task that much tougher. Bangalore are on top of that race, with +1.340, Lions did their NRR no harm by walloping Guyana, and are at +0.716, and Mumbai come in third with +0.260. However, if Mumbai win today, and win well, they can well move up the table. Unfortunately for Mumbai, they will then have to sit back and watch how Lions v Bangalore pans out. In other words, after tonight, their fate will be out of their hands. Winning tonight will be a good start though.

Scenarios: Bangalore have played 2, won 1 and lost 1. Defeat today won't close their challenge, but it will open up Group B in exciting fashion. South Australia have already sealed a semis berth for that group, and if Mumbai win today, it will leave Lions, Mumbai and Bangalore in a three-way hunt for the other spot. If Lions then lose their last game against Bangalore, we will have all three tied on two wins, and net run-rate will decide who progresses. Interesting times!

5.04pm Lots of talking points after that toss. First up, Abu Nechim lands in town and gets a game straight away. Seamer in for the spin of left-armer Ali Murtaza. This means Mumbai are going to be quite seam-heavy - Zaheer, Malinga, Bravo, Pollard, Nechim to go with Harbhajan. Kallis returns and Bangalore will be pleased to see him back. Pandey goes out, as does du Preez, who impressed with the bat despite coming in as a bowler in the previous game.

Toss Sachin Tendulkar wins the toss and Mumbai will bat. "I see these cracks widening, so there may be uneven bounce [later in the game]. Ali Murtaza is out and Abu Nechim comes in."

Kumble: "Very important game for us.. Two changes, Akhil and Kallis come in for Dillon du Preez and Manish Pandey."

4.59pm Harbhajan Singh runs in at the nets, and from coach TA Sekhar's positive response - he is nodding his approval - I reckon it wasn't a rank full toss on the pads. Bhajji sent down a few of those in that cracking finish against South Australia. That won't do today. Must-win game this for Mumbai. They had knocked Bangalore out in the IPL semis.

4.52pm While we wait for the toss, coming up in eight minutes, time to reflect on Guyana's defeat against Lions, their third in three games, which means they are out of the tournament. Sid Ravindran's match report captures the action from that game. It has been a forgettable campaign, and a huge disappointment overall from Guyana.

Hello and welcome to the most-anticipated clash of the league stage of the Champions League. Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore were the front-runners for most of IPL 2010, before Chennai Super Kings hit their straps and took the big prize. Mumbai and Bangalore face off again today, and if the two teams manage to field well, we might have a good cricket match on our hands. While we wait for the toss, here is Sid Talya's preview for the game.

A small setback for Mumbai before the game: Abhishek Nayar, who was included in the squad after Dhawal Kulkarni's injury, will miss the rest of the tournament with flu and a respiratory infection. Abu Nechim, the 21 year-old seamer from Assam, takes his place. Nayar did not play a single game during his brief stay and it remains to be seen if Nechim will be more lucky.

Kumar to Dhawan, no run, lovely curl away from the left hander, Dhawan stays in the crease and pokes it out to covers

Kumar to Dhawan, no run, you gotta be really lucky to get away with something like that! Extra bounce, and a touch slow off the deck from Praveen, Dhawan is early into the shot and gets a leading edge that balloons up and somehow lands safe square on the off side

Kumar to Dhawan, no run, bit of bounce on offer here, Dhawan is not too comfortable as he stays back and plays it as it comes into him

Kumar to Dhawan, no run, Praveen takes this one out, Dhawan spots the movement and times the backfoot cover drive quite well, but no placement

Kumar to Dhawan, no run, stays well back and opens the face, looking for a dab to third man, but straight to Kohli at backward point

There's a buzz here in Durban. Super atmosphere!

Kumar to Dhawan, no run, crunched off the backfoot and quite a spectacular save from Cameron White, diving full length to his right to stop that screamer, giving PK a maiden

End of over 1 (maiden) Mumbai Indians 0/0 (RR: 0.00)

Sriram Veera in Durban: "More support in for Mumbai today. Huge scream went up when they mentioned Mumbai on the PA." Vinay Kumar to bowl, not Steyn. Hmm.. He has got SRT bowled before, in the IPL.

Vinay Kumar to Tendulkar, FOUR, ain't happening this time, back a length outside off, Sachin sees it early and latches on with the pull, between midwicket and mid-off. Authoritative four to start off!

Vinay Kumar to Tendulkar, no run, great response! 130 kph, but it takes off from a length outside off and catches Sachin by surprise as he shapes for the backfoot punch

Vinay Kumar to Tendulkar, no run, on the money this time, back of a length and angling into Sachin, who dabs it off the pads to midwicket

Vinay Kumar to Tendulkar, no run, Spectacular stuff! Kohli follows White's example at point. Sachin smashed that off the backfoot and heads had turned to the point fence, until Kohli dived to the right and stopped it.

Vinay Kumar to Tendulkar, 1 run, Sachin sets himself up for the pull, but it is too wide outside off for the shot and he drags it off the bottom edge towards wide mid on

Vinay Kumar to Dhawan, 1 run, cheeky single from Dhawan to get off the mark, taps the shortish ball on off stump to mid off and takes off

End of over 2 (6 runs) Mumbai Indians 6/0 (RR: 3.00)

Praveen shifts to round the wickets.

Kumar to Dhawan, SIX, as the old saying goes - "Why fix it if it ain't broke?" Praveen had Dhawan in lots of strife from over the wicket in his opening over, but now goes around and angles a friendly short ball into Dhawan's body. He happily swings oit over midwicket for six.

Back to over the sticks.

Kumar to Dhawan, 1 run, back of a length outside off, Dhawan taps to the off side, scurries across for one and then thinks of coming back for a non-existent second. The throw goes to the keeper, who fires it at the non-striker's but misses. Dhawan and Praveen get into a mess as well!

Kumar to Tendulkar, 2 runs, Sachin walks across, he wants to ping the leg side boundary desperately. Gets it away this time from off stump for a couple behind square

Kumar to Tendulkar, FOUR, and again, Sachin is on off stump and the ball well outside when he connects with the pull., Not the greatest piece of timing, but it is places between midwicket and mid on. Four more.

Kumar to Tendulkar, OUT, Praveen nets the big fish! Good delivery on the channel, it had Sachin fishing, he chose to defend to the off side - probably would have been better off walking across as he did previously. Faint outside edge and it finishes in the delighted Uthappa's gloves.

Rayudu in at three.

Kumar to Rayudu, 1 run, wide outside Rayudu's off stump and he throws everything at it. Flies down to deep third man for one

Vinay Kumar to Rayudu, 2 runs, wide outside off again for Rayudu, who throws his bat at it and it is half-stopped in the covers. He picks two

Vinay Kumar to Rayudu, OUT, Rayudu perishes! The happy flashing outside off did not last too long, third time unlucky! Short and wide again, he flashed without moving across, this time got a thick outside edge that flew very quickly to Dravid's right at slip. He jumped to the right and pouched it smartly. Mumbai are reeling.

Duminy to face.

Vinay Kumar to Duminy, no run, Vinay digs it short, not very fast but this pitch has some good carry. Duminy ducks under it

Vinay Kumar to Duminy, 1 run, and again, uncomfortable rise from Vinay, Duminy is in the crease, and quickly moves his hands up to fend it to the leg side and take a single

Off side cordon being beefed up, Kohli runs across from midwicket.

Vinay Kumar to Dhawan, 1 run, back of a length on the pads and Dhawan taps it to where Kohli came from, for a single

Vinay Kumar to Duminy, 2 runs, How lucky is that? Duminy moves across to off stump and looks to shovel pull over square leg. All goes well until he gets a top edge that takes off into the Durban sky.... and lands around 3 metres away from Kallis running across from deep square leg. Smart fielding, saves the boundary

End of over 4 (6 runs) Mumbai Indians 26/2 (RR: 6.50)

Kumar to Dhawan, 1 run, taps it off the pads for a quick single. Throw hits Duminy on the thigh

Kumar to Duminy, 1 leg bye, Duminy again is looking to go across and cross-bat to the leg side. Concerned about the extra bounce? Can't quite connect.

Kumar to Dhawan, 1 run, this one is on middle and leg, Duminy stays back and flicks it in front of square

Kumar to Duminy, 1 run, full on the pads, and driven without much power to mid on for another single

Kumar to Dhawan, no run, looking for another one of those soft-handed singles into the covers. This one goes straight to the fielder though

Kumar to Dhawan, FOUR, finally gets one away. Dhawan again comes across to the off stump, it angles nicely into him and he pulls it comfortably behind square for a four.

End of over 5 (8 runs) Mumbai Indians 34/2 (RR: 6.80)

Vinay continues.

Vinay Kumar to Duminy, no run, back of a length, and angling across the left hander who punches it down the track

Can't remember the last time we had two batsmen who look so similar batting together. Not since the time of the Waugh twins. And the Marshall twins - Hamish and James - for NZ.

Vinay Kumar to Duminy, 1 wide, wide slips down the leg

Vinay Kumar to Duminy, no run, Duminy tries another ugly swing across the line and makes no contact. Runs away to the off side

Vinay Kumar to Duminy, no run, back of a length on off stump, touch of inward movement makes Duminy inside edge the on drive to Kohli and mid on

Vinay Kumar to Duminy, no run, Why is Duminy doing this?! Again plants the front foot well across and looks for the pull-swing. And misses it. Boy..

Vinay Kumar to Duminy, no run, good delivery, back of a length, bounce and a sliver of movement away from the tentative Duminy who came as close to getting an outside edge without actually edging it, as possible

Vinay Kumar to Duminy, 1 run, stays in the crease and runs it down to Steyn at short third man for a quick single. The throw misses the stumps, but I reckon Dhawan would have made his ground

End of over 6 (2 runs) Mumbai Indians 36/2 (RR: 6.00)

Praveen to bowl out. Interesting moves from Anil Kumble.

Kumar to Duminy, 1 run, back of a length, angling from leg stump to off, it is tapped to the off side and they take off for a single. Kohli from cover and Praveen converge on the ball, Kohli fires a throw towards the stumps, but the batsman is in the way. Phew, so much action for a single!

Kumar to Dhawan, no run, whoa, what happened there? Praveen bangs it in really short, Dhawan who had come down the pitch was in no position to do anything. Tried to upper cut it, but probably made no contact.. and Uthappa failed to colelct over his head.

Kumar to Dhawan, 1 leg bye, goes for a pull to a ball not short enough, gets something on it and picks up a quick single

Kumar to Duminy, 1 run, fuller on the pads, worked off the legs for a single to midwicket

These guys need a move-on, are they leaving too much for Pollard later?

Kumar to Dhawan, 2 runs, back of a length outside off, worked away square off the backfoot and they run like men possessed to take two. Bad throw from the deep makes it easy, Vinay was the culprit

Kumar to Dhawan, 1 run, Praveen finishes an efficient spell with one angling across from middle and off, it is tamely patted to the left of point for another single

End of over 7 (6 runs) Mumbai Indians 42/2 (RR: 6.00)

Ramani: "I dont think Waugh twins looks similar... They look different in all aspects!!!.. look, style bowling fielding et all... " I agree.. these two look like twins though. Kumble comes on.

Kumble to Dhawan, 1 run, Dhawan responds with another surprising shot - the reverse sweep from middle and leg. Good thing he got an inside edge, else he would have been dead plumb

Kamal: "how can you forget Sachin and Sehwag. They look exactly the same" Word.

Kumble to Duminy, no run, looped up on middle and leg, he is down the track and misses it. Rapped on the pads but he is well out

Kumble to Duminy, 2 wides, wide down the leg and Praveen at short fine leg makes a mess of it

Kumble to Dhawan, 1 bye, UThappa misses a stumping! Dhawan comes out of the crease, yorks himself with a half volley and misses. So too does Uthappa. A clean collection and he would have had Dhawan well short

Kumble to Duminy, 2 runs, great stuff! Duminy times and places the slog sweep well, Vinay runs a mile from deep square leg, dives, slides, puts his hand out and pulls it back in a metre in front of the midwicket boundary

Kumble to Duminy, 1 run, full on middle and leg, Duminy looks leg side again and gets a single to midwicket

Kumble to Dhawan, 1 run, makes room by moving to leg and cuts the short ball away towards point for one

Kallis comes on.

Kallis to Dhawan, 1 run, starts with a half-volley on the pads that is not capitalised on. Flicked straight to deep square leg

Kallis to Duminy, OUT, South African takes out South African in a game between two Indian franchises! Length ball on middle and leg, Duminy gets under it and looks to time it over long on. Pretty well timed, but not well enough to clear long on. Duminy's struggles end.

Kallis to Dhawan, 2 runs, gets this one away to deep third man and another tight run couple

Kallis to Dhawan, no run, full on middle, Dhawan walks across and looks to swing it away. Can't make contact.

Kallis to Dhawan, 1 wide, 139.9 kph, Kallis does not like seeing Dhawan chipping out so fires in a bouncer that takes off and Uthappa has to leap to collect it

Kallis to Dhawan, 1 run, if today is not Dhawan's day, then which day is? Length ball on off stump, Dhawan is a year early on the drive and scoops it straight up to the off side to the right of where the non-striker should be. Kumble and Praveen come from mid off and cover. And fail to reach it before it lands

Kallis to Tiwary, no run, full and swinging away from Tiwary who misses it as he pushes forward into the drive

Kumble to Dhawan, (no ball) 1 run, Aha! Kumble over-steps, Just about on the line there. Length ball on off stump, Dhawan has another life! Lofts it straight to Akhil at long off, who is happy after catching it.. And then he sees his captain yelling at him to throw it back. The batsmen take a single

Kumble to Tiwary, 2 runs, the free-hit is a yorker on leg stump, no room for Tiwary to muscle it, he flicks it down to deep square leg where Kallis fumbles and concedes two.

Kumble to Tiwary, 1 run, googly on leg stump, Tiwary spots it and flicks it smartly to the right of deep midwicket, but Vinay fields and throws wonderfully to stop the second

Kumble to Dhawan, 1 run, Dhawan chips out and drives it on the run to deep midwicket for one

Round the wicket with a slip in.

Kumble to Tiwary, 1 run, short leg spinner, spinning in, cut against the spin to deep cover from where a great throw keeps it down to one

Kumble to Dhawan, 1 run, outside leg stump, Dhawan sweeps but can't beat the deep fine leg fielder.

Thanks Nitin. Bangalore slightly ahead at this point. Dale Steyn's been given the ball.

Steyn to Dhawan, 1 run, short of a good length on the off, drops it on the side of the pitch and races through for a single

Steyn to Tiwary, no run, shortish outside off, nips back in just a hint, gets on the back foot and taps it to point

Steyn to Tiwary, 1 run, was trying to free his arms there, thought about it initially but it nipped back in from middle, a bit of extra bounce as well, was cramped for space, ends up fending it into the leg side for a single

Steyn to Dhawan, 1 leg bye, shortish on leg stump, shuffles across to whip it fine, struck on the thigh, they get a leg bye

Steyn to Tiwary, 1 run, there's no midwicket, banged it short on middle, a touch too quick for Tiwary who went for the pull, caught it high on the bat and it landed in the vacant space on the leg side

Steyn to Dhawan, no run, short on middle and leg, shapes up to play the pull, a touch too quick again, is struck on the thigh, nice start from Steyn
