Charles Brune was a round-arm medium-fast bowler who played for Cambridge University and Middlesex. In the 1867 Varsity match he took 5 for 64 in Oxford's first innings as Cambridge secured a five-wicket win, and the following year 4 for 38 in another victory. He completed a hat-trick of wins in 1869 but went wicketless. Earlier that season he took 8 for 31 against MCC, his best return. He played occasionally for Middlesex, and his last first-class game in 1875 was for Gentlemen against Players - he did not even get a chance to bowl. He died in France aged 33.
