Mike Eager, who went to Oxford after doing his National Service, won hockey and cricket blues as a freshman in 1956, hitting a hundred in his third match and following with a fifty against the Australians. He ended the summer seventh in the season's averages. That led to an approach from Gloucestershire who wanted to groom him for the captaincy, but it was soon clear that was not going to come easily to a Russian-speaking Oxbridge student. In fairness, the university side at that time was one of the strongest - EW Swanton reckoned it would have finished in the top half of the Championship. After graduating, Eagar went to teach at Eton, before being summoned to play for Gloucestershire against Glamorgan, even though he had only one club match to his name all summer. He struggled through two matches and that was the end of his county career.
