England in Australia ODI Series - 4th ODI

Australia v England

England won by 21 runs

1.50pm Right then, we're ready for the off. Can Matt Prior get off the mark? Word is the pitch could not be truer so England will need plenty. Looks like Strauss will take strike to Brett Lee. Two slips in place...

1.40pm This morning is the Gnasher show, and rightly so. Do you follow him on Twitter? You should and can by clicking here. "England playing three frontline bowlers," he Tweets. "Collingwood at No. 7 and Yardy at No. 8. World Cup masterplan? Doubt it."

1.30pm England have won the toss and will bat which is a good thing for them because they have packed in an extra batsman and line up like this: 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Matt Prior (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Paul Collingwood, 8 Michael Yardy, 9 Ajmal Shahzad, 10 Chris Tremlett, 11 James Anderson.

Australia, meanwhile, are unchanged so look like this: 1 Shane Watson, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Cameron White, 6 David Hussey, 7 Steve Smith, 8 John Hastings, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Xavier Doherty, 10 Doug Bollinger.

1.15pm Hello fellow gluttons, hello. In a heady world where common sense ruled cricket scheduling this series would be over. Australia would be reflecting on a 3-0 cleansweep to make up for Ashes heartache, the England players would be back at home, resting and preparing for a tilt at the World Cup. But no. This is the fourth game of seven and the series is alive.

I'm Sahil Dutta and I'll be joined by George Binoy to bring you all the action today. Peter English will be providing bulletins.

We have the toss in about five minutes and if I can score some coverage, I might be able to tell you something about it. Until then I suggest you bury yourselves in Andrew McGlashan's preview and arm yourselves with all the knowledge and quirky stats you need to impress your friends.

Speaking of Gnasher, he's at the ground, and has piped up to wish you all (and I join him in this) "Happy Australia Day! The weather," he continues, "is perfectly warm and dry." Marvellous.

0.1

Lee to Strauss, 5 wides, oops, that will help England. Lee swings this a long way down the leg side, too far for Haddin to catch up with and it runs away for five wides. Still, swing there at least

0.1

Lee to Strauss, no run, better delivery this time, would be difficult not to be, outside off stump and Strauss leans forward to hang his bat inside the line

0.2

Lee to Strauss, 2 runs, nudged, fiddled and nurdled off the pads towards midwicket. Still a touch of swing for Lee

0.3

Lee to Strauss, no run, no swing from this length - too short - but the line is impeccable and Strauss stands tall to defend

0.4

Lee to Strauss, 1 run, shortish again, this time the line is wider, and Strauss, unusually for him, mistimes a cut shot. Earns a single wide of cover to bring Prior on strike against Lee

0.5

Lee to Prior, FOUR, Prior is away! Easy as you like. Gets a leg-stump half-volley and clips it neatly to the square leg boundary

0.6

Lee to Prior, no run, Lee adjusts his line to outside off stump and Prior lifts his bat high out of harm's way

So, good start for England, patchy one for Lee.

End of over 1 (12 runs) England 12/0 (RR: 12.00)
MJ Prior    4* (2b 1x4)      B Lee    1-0-12-0
AJ Strauss    3* (4b)

With Tait and Johnson away Doug Bollinger will share the new ball.

1.1

Bollinger to Strauss, 1 run, races in as always and starts well - up and around off stump - Strauss drives without much timing, wide of mid-off for a jogged single

1.2

Bollinger to Prior, no run, ooh, this is through Prior but somehow misses everything! It was full and swung back in late, Prior looked like he wanted to leave but then suddenly saw it swing back and tried to squeeze out a defence. It went through the gate and just about missed off stump

1.3

Bollinger to Prior, 2 runs, big swing again this time, Prior aims a defence and it slides off the inside-edge, trickling out to midwicket for a well-run couple

1.4

Bollinger to Prior, no run, no swing this time so Prior's leave alone outside off occurs with no alarms

1.5

Bollinger to Prior, FOUR, ah, lovely stuff. Full, wide half-volley asking to be dispatched and Prior loves a drive. He leant into it beautifully and stroked it to the cover rope

1.6

Bollinger to Prior, no run, steered backwards of square on the off side where it's smartly fielded

End of over 2 (7 runs) England 19/0 (RR: 9.50)
MJ Prior    10* (7b 2x4)      DE Bollinger    1-0-7-0
AJ Strauss    4* (5b)      B Lee    1-0-12-0

2.1

Lee to Strauss, no run, strangled appeal as Strauss inside-edges a loose drive into his pads. Good delivery, nipped back from a full length

2.2

Lee to Strauss, no run, whoosh, bit of a flat-foot swish outside off. Not a great shot but it excited Lee enough to have a chirp. Strauss is utterly unmoved as always

2.3

Lee to Strauss, no run, back of a length this time and Strauss solidly blocks back at the bowler

2.4

Lee to Strauss, FOUR, flash and four! Not entirely middled but Strauss really threw his arms at it and it cleared point and sped to the boundary

2.5

Lee to Strauss, OUT, that's all for Strauss, Lee gets his man! Another flat-footed swipe outside off stump, finds a thickish edge that Haddin gleefully collects. It was short and wide but not for the first time today Strauss missed the cut shot he normally nails

AJ Strauss c †Haddin b Lee 8 (13m 10b 1x4 0x6) SR: 80.00

Jonathan Trott is the new man. Heady average above 50.00 to his name...

2.6

Lee to Trott, 2 runs, Trott is away in classic Trott fashion, shuffling across his stumps to quietly work the ball off his legs towards midwicket

End of over 3 (6 runs) England 25/1 (RR: 8.33)
IJL Trott    2* (1b)      B Lee    2-0-18-1
MJ Prior    10* (7b 2x4)      DE Bollinger    1-0-7-0

3.1

Bollinger to Prior, no run, Bollinger digs in a short ball that Prior turns this around the corner to the short fine leg fielder

3.2

Bollinger to Prior, no run, decent bounce for Bollinger from back of the length and Prior blocks to cover

3.3

Bollinger to Prior, no run, enough width for Prior to throw his arms, very flowing drive, but straight to cover

Steve Bernard, the Australia team manager, says on Twitter: "At this stage, the pitch looks like 280 to 300 will be a likely par score. I may revise this after an hour."

3.4

Bollinger to Prior, no run, Prior is again sturdy in defence

3.5

Bollinger to Prior, 1 run, good lengths and lines from Bollinger and Prior turns his wrists over the ball to send it to midwicket

3.6

Bollinger to Trott, no run, Bollinger hangs the ball around off stump and Trott blocks before continuing with his main reason for being out there - marking his guard

End of over 4 (1 run) England 26/1 (RR: 6.50)
IJL Trott    2* (2b)      DE Bollinger    2-0-8-0
MJ Prior    11* (12b 2x4)      B Lee    2-0-18-1

4.1

Lee to Prior, no run, pitch looks very good for runs, ball coming onto the bat, enough bounce. Prior celebrates all of this by defending

4.2

Lee to Prior, 1 run, hint of edge here, half-steered-half-outside-edge, runs away to third man

4.3

Lee to Trott, no run, more solid defence as Lee continues to hammer away on an excellent line and length

4.4

Lee to Trott, 1 run, touch fuller and it's played firmly to deep cover

4.5

Lee to Prior, no run, Lee sears in a yorker, full and straight and Prior jabs it away just in time. 94mph according to the speedgun

4.6

Lee to Prior, FOUR, Prior looks in good touch, driving elegantly and on the up, wide of mid-off and speeds to the boundary

End of over 5 (6 runs) England 32/1 (RR: 6.40)
MJ Prior    16* (16b 3x4)      B Lee    3-0-24-1
IJL Trott    3* (4b)      DE Bollinger    2-0-8-0

5.1

Bollinger to Trott, no run, Bollinger bangs in a short ball, rather that stand tall and thwack it over third man, Trott eases out the way of it. Good choice I suspect

5.2

Bollinger to Trott, no run, much fuller this time and despite it being outside off stump, Trott works it to leg

5.3

Bollinger to Trott, no run, good line from Bollinger, very straight, good length too. Trott can do nothing but defend

5.4

Bollinger to Trott, no run, Trott does play this on the off side, driving without much timing to mid-off

5.5

Bollinger to Trott, no run, Bollinger giving Trott no width at all and from back of a length Trott has no option but to defend

5.6

Bollinger to Trott, 1 run, this time there is a hint of width which allows Trott to dab a single to third man

End of over 6 (1 run) England 33/1 (RR: 5.50)
IJL Trott    4* (10b)      DE Bollinger    3-0-9-0
MJ Prior    16* (16b 3x4)      B Lee    3-0-24-1

Change in bowling it's Australia's man of the series so far - Shane Watson.

6.1

Watson to Trott, no run, Trott on the go straight away, skipping down the wicket and aiming a whip to leg. Doesn't get any of it and is rewarded with a tirade from Haddin behind the stumps. Pleasant lad, that Haddin

6.2

Watson to Trott, no run, Trott again can't get this away as Watson's line is too good

6.3

Watson to Trott, 1 run, Trott shuffled to the leg side this time - which is odd. Gives himself enough room to work to third man

6.4

Watson to Prior, 1 run, Prior has looked typically busy and nudes a single to mid-on

6.5

Watson to Trott, no run, this will frustrate Trott. Gets his beloved leg-stump line but clips it straight to short midwicket

6.6

Watson to Trott, FOUR, Watson gives him a second opportunity and this time Trott makes no mistake, flicking it finer and it runs away to the square leg rope, beating the deep midwicket fielder

End of over 7 (6 runs) England 39/1 (RR: 5.57)
IJL Trott    9* (15b 1x4)      SR Watson    1-0-6-0
MJ Prior    17* (17b 3x4)      DE Bollinger    3-0-9-0

7.1

Bollinger to Prior, FOUR, wow, shades of Haddin here as Prior gets down the wicket and gives himself room outside leg to smash this over mid-off and it lands just inside the rope

7.2

Bollinger to Prior, FOUR, four more! Nicely done from Prior, gets his the room outside off that is his lifeblood, and thumps it through cover

7.3

Bollinger to Prior, 1 run, Bollinger's response is to bang it in short and Prior mistimes a pull, comes high off the bat and trickles to midwicket

7.4

Bollinger to Trott, FOUR, too full from Bollinger, and Trott times his off-side push ideally and the ball seems to gather pace on its way to the rope

7.5

Bollinger to Trott, 1 run, Bollinger returns to a good length and line and Trott dabs a single behind square on the off side

7.6

Bollinger to Prior, no run, good slower ball beats Prior outside off

England motoring now, 14 runs off that over and the 50 is up.

End of over 8 (14 runs) England 53/1 (RR: 6.62)
MJ Prior    26* (21b 5x4)      DE Bollinger    4-0-23-0
IJL Trott    14* (17b 2x4)      SR Watson    1-0-6-0

8.1

Watson to Trott, FOUR, wrong line again from Watson, bowling on Trott's pads with fine leg up makes no sense and Trott's flick beats the man and runs away to the boundary

8.2

Watson to Trott, 2 runs, better line, outside off stump and Trott aims a drive, slicing it and losing his bottom hand off the bat as he plays it. Finds a gap at cover

8.3

Watson to Trott, 1 run, again Watson explores Trott's pads and is predictably worked away through midwicket

Haddin up to the stumps now, which should by noisy.

8.4

Watson to Prior, 1 run, touch too straight from Watson and Prior mistimes a drive down the ground

8.5

Watson to Trott, 1 run, a hint of room outside off allows Trott to jab to third man

8.6

Watson to Prior, no run, Watson finishes the over much better than he started it, landing it on a fuller length and off stump

End of over 9 (9 runs) England 62/1 (RR: 6.88)
MJ Prior    27* (23b 5x4)      SR Watson    2-0-15-0
IJL Trott    22* (21b 3x4)      DE Bollinger    4-0-23-0

Another change in bowling, the ever-sweaty John Hastings.

9.1

Hastings to Trott, no run, starts fullish around off stump - tidy - and it's pushed to cover

9.2

Hastings to Trott, no run, touch slower from Hastings and it's driven firmly back at the bowler, smashing into his shins

9.3

Hastings to Trott, no run, Trott picks out mid-on from a ball that lands well outside off

9.4

Hastings to Trott, 1 run, ooh, almost another run out farce for England! Trott dabbed it to where a second slip could have been, Prior motored up for a single and Trott took a long time to get going, Haddin threw in but Trott got himself in the way and it thudded off his back

Haddin up to the stumps...

9.5

Hastings to Prior, 2 runs, Prior gets down on one knee and sweeps, risky shot, picked out short fine leg who misfields and allows a couple

9.6

Hastings to Prior, no run, this time it's pushed firmly to cover

End of over 10 (3 runs) England 65/1 (RR: 6.50)
MJ Prior    29* (25b 5x4)      JW Hastings    1-0-3-0
IJL Trott    23* (25b 3x4)      SR Watson    2-0-15-0

Australia are not messing and have taken the Bowling Powerplay. Not particularly imaginative that.

10.1

Watson to Trott, no run, Watson lands a straight ball that Trott tries to whip to leg but misses

10.2

Watson to Trott, no run, little bit short and a little bit wide and the cut shot finds point

10.3

Watson to Trott, 1 run, Trott flicks rather expansively but only for single to fine leg

10.4

Watson to Prior, 2 runs, wrong line from Watson around leg stump, Prior tries to whip it but gets more edge than middle

10.5

Watson to Prior, 1 run, again Watson is on the pads, desperate not to give Prior width outside off - Prior works it with his wrists to leg

10.6

Watson to Trott, 2 runs, good offcutter around off stump and Trott clamps down to run it to third man

End of over 11 (6 runs) England 71/1 (RR: 6.45)
IJL Trott    26* (29b 3x4)      SR Watson    3-0-21-0
MJ Prior    32* (27b 5x4)      JW Hastings    1-0-3-0

11.1

Hastings to Prior, 1 run, ooh, Prior tries to work to third man but the slower ball means it's a bottom edge that bounces over the stumps and Haddin's head

11.2

Hastings to Trott, 1 run, Trott gives himself room and mistimes a drive to cover

11.3

Hastings to Prior, 1 run, with soft hands it's worked to square leg. Just singles available at the moment

11.4

Hastings to Trott, no run, hint of width allows Trott to flow a drive but straight to cover

11.5

Hastings to Trott, no run, Hastings is sliding the ball in nicely, not giving Trott any room and the attempted work-to-third-man is inside-edged

11.6

Hastings to Trott, no run, pushed straight to cover again

Right, swift change here. Guest comms appearance from Siddarth while I try to scoff down some breakfast.

End of over 12 (3 runs) England 74/1 (RR: 6.16)
IJL Trott    27* (33b 3x4)      JW Hastings    2-0-6-0
MJ Prior    34* (29b 5x4)      SR Watson    3-0-21-0

Thanks Sahil. Brett Lee back for his second spell

12.1

Lee to Prior, FOUR, 'Welcome back,' says Prior, charging down the track and cracking a short of length ball over mid-off for four

12.2

Lee to Prior, 1 run, a swinging full ball at 146kph is the response from Lee, Prior digs it out towards cover

12.3

Lee to Trott, 1 run, length ball at 144kph, Trott tucks it towards midwicket and scampers a single

12.4

Lee to Prior, no run, Lee fires in a yorker on offstump, blocked to the off side

12.5

Lee to Prior, no run, shorter this time from Lee, defended solidly by Prior

12.6

Lee to Prior, 2 runs, a high full toss well outside off, clocked at 148kph, slapped towards sweeper cover by Prior for a couple

End of over 13 (8 runs) England 82/1 (RR: 6.30)
MJ Prior    41* (34b 6x4)      B Lee    4-0-32-1
IJL Trott    28* (34b 3x4)      JW Hastings    2-0-6-0

13.1

13.2

13.4

Hastings to Prior, 1 run, clips this one from offstump towards midwicket for a quick single

13.5

Hastings to Trott, 1 run, another easy single as the ball is worked towards point

13.6

Hastings to Prior, no run, Hastings keeps it steady, length ball on off, punched back towards the bowler, Haddin screams 'Down' as soon as the shot is played, Hastings gets down to field that

End of over 14 (7 runs) England 89/1 (RR: 6.35)
MJ Prior    46* (38b 7x4)      JW Hastings    3-0-13-0
IJL Trott    30* (36b 3x4)      B Lee    4-0-32-1

14.1

Lee to Trott, no run, Lee nearly hits 150kph, that was 149.9, length ball just outside off, pushed towards down the ground

14.2

Lee to Trott, 1 run, good god! what a mess that was, terrible cricket all around, both batsmen find themselves at the same end after a huge mix-up, Australia still manage to not get the run-out, Trott blocks the ball from Lee and he's not sure where that went, he turns round to see it round in front of middle stump and has his back to the non-striker as the ball nestles between middle and off stump after rolling gently back, Prior was charging down the track, no idea why he was, Lee races towards the ball, collides with Trott at the batsman's crease, and bowler, batsman and non-striker were all at the striker's end, Lee manages to get the ball after a couple of collisions with Trott, he has loads of time to throw the ball to the other end and get the run-out, he fires in the throw wide though and the fielder at the non-striker's end couldn't collect it and Trott heaves a sigh of relief, as does Prior

Clarke has some words with the umpire, presumably about Trott getting in the way of Lee, but the batsman was had no clue the bowler was charging at him

14.3

Lee to Prior, SIX, whoah, what a shot that is, Prior absolutely wallops that slightly short one over midwicket, Lee can't be feeling too happy right now

14.4

Lee to Prior, 2 runs, full ball played past extra cover

14.5

Lee to Prior, 1 run, nudged toward square leg for a single

14.6

Bollinger to Collingwood, FOUR, ah, Collingwood middles another! Plays this really well. Down the wicket and eased, rather than slugged, to the long-on boundary

45.6

Bollinger to Collingwood, 1 wide, Bollinger is struggling this over, and shoves this a long, long way outside off stump

45.6

Bollinger to Collingwood, no run, good ball to finish a poor over. Collingwood down the wicket and Bollinger dug in a slower bouncer that the batsman couldn't work into the leg side

End of over 46 (14 runs) England 271/6 (RR: 5.89)
PD Collingwood    19* (19b 1x4 1x6)      DE Bollinger    9-0-55-0
MH Yardy    25* (17b 4x4)      B Lee    8-0-68-1

Shane Watson replaces Lee for the last Powerplay over.

46.1

Watson to Yardy, no run, Yardy down the wicket and throwing his arms at the ball, doesn't time it at all and it trickles to cover. England though about a single but there was none there

46.2

Watson to Yardy, 1 run, good full length here, slower too, and difficult to get away. Driven without much timing to long-off

46.3

Watson to Collingwood, no run, Collingwood again advances before trying to sweep/ramp it over short midwicket, the slower ball meant he was through it long before it arrived

46.4

Watson to Collingwood, 1 leg bye, charging down the track again and Collingwood tried to heave to leg. Missed and it struck him on the pads. Clarke calls for a review because it hit on the back leg, but outside off stump so never going to be at

46.5

Watson to Yardy, 1 leg bye, another appeal from Watson as a fullish ball gets Yardy on the pads as he tried to flick around the corner

46.6

Watson to Collingwood, 1 run, another slower ball the Collingwood slaps without much timing to deep mid-on

End of the batting Powerplay and England have actually not lost a wicket during it. Which is most unlike them.

End of over 47 (4 runs) England 275/6 (RR: 5.85)
PD Collingwood    20* (22b 1x4 1x6)      SR Watson    4-0-23-0
MH Yardy    26* (20b 4x4)      DE Bollinger    9-0-55-0

With the Powerplay done Clarke is happy to go back to David Hussey.

47.1

Hussey to Collingwood, FOUR, Collingwood lines up a sweep, smashes it hard straight to deep midwicket on the bounce. White makes an utter hash of the save and it goes through him to the rope

47.2

Hussey to Collingwood, 1 run, attempted reverse-poke comes off a flurry of bat and glove and trickles for one

47.3

Hussey to Yardy, 1 run, Yardy gives himself room to smack to cover for a swift single

47.4

Hussey to Collingwood, 2 runs, Collingwood shelves the reverse sweep and pushes to long-off, comes back for the second and would have been gone if it hit but it didn't

47.5

Hussey to Collingwood, no run, fired in full and straight and bunted back to the bowler

47.6

Hussey to Collingwood, OUT, Collingwood tries to repeat the sweep/heave that got the boundary earlier, this time he timed it too well and it went straight to White who made no mistake this time. Ends an ugly innings but at least it showed signs of form

PD Collingwood c White b Hussey 27 (37m 27b 2x4 1x6) SR: 100.00

End of over 48 (8 runs) England 283/7 (RR: 5.89)
     DJ Hussey    3-0-11-3
MH Yardy    27* (21b 4x4)      SR Watson    4-0-23-0

So two overs to go and England need 17 for 300...

48.1

Watson to Shahzad, 2 runs, short ball from Watson, Shahzad gives himself room to wristily flick to past point

48.2

Watson to Shahzad, no run, this time Shahzad walks across his stumps but Watson follows and it's driven to cover

48.3

Watson to Shahzad, 1 run, another wristy drive but it slides off the edge past Haddin

48.4

Watson to Yardy, 1 run, Yardy down on one knee trying to poke a sweep fine but gets too much of it and it goes to fine leg

48.5

Watson to Shahzad, 1 run, flicked airily, but straight to mid-on

48.6

Watson to Yardy, 1 run, Yardy's lack of timing saves him here as the drive goes one-bounce to deepish mid-off

Good effort from Watson leaves England with 11 needed for 300.

End of over 49 (6 runs) England 289/7 (RR: 5.89)
MH Yardy    29* (23b 4x4)      SR Watson    5-0-29-0
A Shahzad    4* (4b)      DJ Hussey    3-0-11-3

49.1

Hussey to Yardy, FOUR, excellent shot from Yardy, really top stuff. Down the wicket and giving himself room to drive into a gap wide of long-off for four. This is turning into an unlikely gem of an innings

49.2

Hussey to Yardy, 1 run, this is horridly timed down the ground, trickling to long-on

49.3

Hussey to Shahzad, OUT, Hussey gets another! What figures he has. Shahzad mistimes a full toss and it loops to midwicket who takes a very gentle chance

A Shahzad c Watson b Hussey 4 (6m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 80.00

Chris Tremlett is the new man but Yardy has strike...

49.4

Hussey to Yardy, FOUR, Yardy is down the wicket, giving himself some room and drives excellently down the ground and times it well enough to run for four

49.5

Hussey to Yardy, 1 run, this is shoved in very short and Yardy should have got more, in the end he belted a pull shot to deep midwicket. Leaves Tremlett to try and bring up the 300

49.6

Hussey to Tremlett, no run, good finish to an excellent spell from Hussey, shoved in quick and full and past Tremlett's attempted drive

So Australia will need 300 to win the match and seal the series. England started and finished well but again a mid-innings stumble cost them. It's a very good wicket and the outfield is swift so Australia should back themselves to do it. England, remember, only have three frontline bowlers. Peter English will have a bulletin to tell you more and during the break have a look at our ESPNcricinfo Innovation Series, in partnership with SAAB, which is a ten-part weekly feature that examines the key developments that helped shape the modern game. Week one looks back the first edition of the Cricket World Cup.

End of over 50 (10 runs) England 299/8
CT Tremlett    0* (1b)      DJ Hussey    4-0-21-4
MH Yardy    39* (27b 6x4)      SR Watson    5-0-29-0
