England in Australia ODI Series - 5th ODI

Australia v England

Australia won by 5 runs

Stuart Broad will bowl the first over. Two slips in place.

The ceremony is done, the anthems are sung. Get the snags on the barbie, open another stubby. We are just about ready...

1.40pm Looking at the pitch, and the short square boundaries here, we should be in for a high-scoring game. Will be interesting to see what role the spinners have today, they have been quite effective in this series.

Gary: "Maxwell ain't very bright and his rash dismissal in Perth re confirmed the nonsense of his selection for the India Tour last year. Will never be a test cricketer and at best should be a fringe short-form player until he shows some team accountability"

1.25pm Australia have the toss and will bat. Michael Clarke, who is back, thinks the pitch will play well all day. Calls it a "special day."

Australia Marsh, Finch, Watson, Clarke, Bailey, Maxwell, Wade, Faulkner, Coulter-Nile, McKay, Doherty

Four changes for Australia: Christian, Pattinson, Johnson and Smith all left out.

England Cook, Bell, Stokes, Root, Morgan, Bopara, Buttler, Bresnan, Broad, Jordan, Tredwell

Interesting to see Joe Root back in place of Gary Ballance. Will give another bowling option for Alastair Cook, who said he would have batted first as well.

1.20pm Can we get a finish to match yesterday's in Auckland? That was some match. Meanwhile, the women's Ashes is continuing in Hobart and England have posted a very strong 4 for 268 as they aim for the win that will retain the Ashes. Also, it would be amiss of me not to wish all our Indian followers a happy Republic Day.

1.10pm Hello everyone and happy Australia Day to all the Aussies out there. It's the traditional Adelaide game today, the final ODI of the series, and can England make it their day? We'll have toss and team news shortly; it is a cracker of a day in Adelaide. A couple of interesting things to tell you about: Ben Stokes has been fined 15% of his match fee for the send-off he gave James Faulkner at the WACA and Darren Lehmann has had some pretty harsh words to say about Glenn Maxwell after he gave his wicket away in the chase. Lehmann not afraid to say things in public.

0.1

Broad to Finch, no run, good length at 132kph, outside off, left alone and goes gently through to Buttler

0.2

Broad to Finch, no run, a little shorter this time, Finch happy to leave it alone early on

0.3

Broad to Finch, no run, another one left alone as he resists an early dart

0.4

Broad to Finch, no run, nice delivery, a touch fuller and close to off stump, hint of shape away as Finch leaves alone

0.5

Broad to Finch, no run, first attempt at some aggression, it was short from Broad and Finch aim to pull through midwicket but was beaten by a lack of bounce

0.6

Broad to Finch, no run, hanging it outside off and the match starts with a maiden

End of over 1 (maiden) Australia 0/0 (RR: 0.00)

Here's Chris Jordan...

1.1

Jordan to Marsh, 1 wide, down the leg side first ball, it swung but started on the wrong line

1.1

Jordan to Marsh, 1 leg bye, gets it straighter, but still around leg stump and it takes Marsh's thigh pad behind square

1.2

Jordan to Finch, no run, full outside off, Finch content to watch them go past off stump

1.3

Jordan to Finch, 1 run, dropped England miss their first opportunity, Finch tempting into a flashing drive at a full delivery and the thick flew high, but very catchable, to Cook at first slip. Couldn't hold it to his right

Replay suggests that Ian Bell, at second slip, just started to move which may have distracted Cook

1.4

Jordan to Marsh, 1 run, good delivery, on off stump and it takes the outside edge down to third man but was pretty well controlled by Marsh

1.5

Jordan to Finch, no run, full outside off, driven very crisply to cover

1.6

Jordan to Finch, no run, left alone outside off...Jordan should have been rewarded in that over

End of over 2 (4 runs) Australia 4/0 (RR: 2.00)

SE Marsh    1* (2b)      SCJ Broad    1-1-0-0

2.1

Broad to Marsh, no run, full on off stump, 137kph, a cross-seam delivery and Marsh defends to the covers

2.2

Broad to Marsh, 1 run, short of a length on middle and leg, tucked off his pads down to long leg

2.3

Broad to Finch, FOUR, lovely stroke, the best one of the early stages of this match as he leans into a cover drive...it wasn't a full half volley, but the pitch is so good you can drive through the line

2.4

Broad to Finch, no run, dropped! And another. England having a shocker. Bopara this time at cover. Finch drives again, not in control this time, and it's basically a dolly which is shelled

2.5

Broad to Finch, 2 runs, straight down the ground, in the air but nowhere near a fielder as it goes straight of mid-on

2.6

Broad to Finch, no run, short of a length on off stump, he's onto the back foot and defends

End of over 3 (7 runs) Australia 11/0 (RR: 3.66)

England in a very giving mood so far

3.1

Jordan to Marsh, no run, full at off stump, 137kph, onto the front foot and defends square to cover

3.2

Jordan to Marsh, no run, comes forward again, pushed up to mid-off

John Ahrens: "England must have celebrated hard after their win in the last game. By the look of those dropped catches, they are still hungover!"

3.3

Jordan to Marsh, 1 wide, swings down the leg side, decent pace at 140kph but started on the wrong line

3.3

Jordan to Marsh, no run, big shout for lbw, full and swinging into Marsh's pads as he flicks across the line...perhaps an inside edge

3.4

Jordan to Marsh, no run, a bit straight from Jordan but it clips the pads to the leg side

3.5

Jordan to Marsh, 1 run, good delivery, full with some swing, but there's another fumble in the field, this time at mid-off as Marsh pushed it fairly gently towards Bresnan

3.6

Jordan to Finch, no run, keeps his drive along the ground this time as he picks out mid-off

David: "Is it just me or Finch can never score a run unless he is dropped several times in an innings. Explains his poor average in other forms of the game" Don't think he was dropped in Perth, but it's certainly a valid point when it comes to red-ball cricket and needing a tighter technique

End of over 4 (2 runs) Australia 13/0 (RR: 3.25)

4.1

Broad to Marsh, no run, short of a length, defends with an open face to backward point

4.2

Broad to Marsh, no run, gets across on off stump, 134kph, defended back to the bowler

AmirM.: "I think England have been hungover since the Ashes win here back home."

4.3

Broad to Marsh, 1 run, guides this down to third man, was quite tight to his body and a similar delivery to the one he fell to in Perth but not as much bounce here

4.4

Broad to Finch, OUT, gone this time! Finch can't make the most of his two lives. Excellent delivery from Broad, on a full length and nips back at Finch who is caught on the back foot and loses his off stump as he tries to get his bat down. Just checking the no-ball, but something was ground behind the line

AJ Finch b Broad 7 (21m 16b 1x4 0x6) SR: 43.75

The bowlers deserved that wicket. The fielders, meanwhile, breath a sigh of relief. Shane Watson back at No. 3

4.5

Broad to Watson, no run, gets across on off stump to a length delivery and defends to midwicket

4.6

Broad to Watson, no run, full outside off stump, Watson makes himself get forward and his defensive shot runs to the on side

End of over 5 (1 run) Australia 14/1 (RR: 2.80)

5.1

Jordan to Marsh, no run, tight to off stump, holds its line as Marsh judges well and leaves

5.2

Jordan to Marsh, no run, this one is fuller and on off stump, Marsh is forward and driving but the bat turns in his hands and the ball squirts to square leg

5.3

Jordan to Marsh, no run, defended from off stump to mid-on...very few freebies from England so far today (with the ball, at least)

5.4

Jordan to Marsh, FOUR, this is a tad too full, allows Marsh to lean into a cover drive which bisects mid-off and cover...Bresnan makes a hard chase, but then misses his flick back at the rope! Oops.

5.5

Jordan to Marsh, FOUR, now he over compensates, goes too short and Marsh latches on with a powerful cut through point

All of a sudden it's a terrific over for Australia

5.6

Jordan to Marsh, no run, full again, forward it a drive which goes quickly back to Jordan in his followthrough

Richard Hartley: "Could watch that Finch dismissal all day what a thing of beauty"

End of over 6 (8 runs) Australia 22/1 (RR: 3.66)

6.1

Broad to Watson, no run, huge appeal for lbw! Playing across a full delivery on off stump. Looked very tight. And Cook reviews. Did it get outside the line? Blimey, this is close. No inside edge. Only if it's clipping leg will he be saved. And it is! Only clipping leg. Watson survives. That wasn't a poor review from England, but that's all they have

6.2

Broad to Watson, OUT, it doesn't matter though! He edges his next ball. Length delivery outside off, a touch wide, Watson lunges into a drive on the up and only sends the nick to Buttler. Pretty poor from Watson. Two innings on this series and two ducks.

SR Watson c †Buttler b Broad 0 (9m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

This is a superb spell from Broad. Didn't dwell on the lbw. He's found his length and is getting the ball to nip both ways. Now it's the captain's turn at No. 4. A short ball early?

6.3

Broad to Clarke, no run, starts full at off stump, stays on the crease and defends

6.4

Broad to Clarke, no run, full outside off, hint of shape back into Clarke who gets onto off stump and covers up

6.5

Broad to Clarke, no run, drags it shorter outside off, Clarke drives square but can't beat point

6.6

Broad to Clarke, no run, back of a length outside off, defended to cover. An excellent over from Broad. Wicket maiden.

Jordan to Marsh, 2 runs, on the pads, Marsh flicks across the line and gets a thick inside edge backward of square leg

7.2

Jordan to Marsh, 1 run, full on off stump, runs off an open face backward of point and Morgan can't prevent the single

7.3

Jordan to Clarke, no run, back of a length, defended with a straight bat

Gokul Kenath: "You got to like Stuart Broad. Looks as pumped up as he was on the first day of the Brisbane test. Should replace Cook as the captain and should have somebody else who can compliment his attitude as the coach."

7.4

Jordan to Clarke, no run, good line, tight on off stump, defended to mid-off

7.5

Jordan to Clarke, no run, keeps him in defence with another ball on off stump, played out to cover

7.6

Jordan to Clarke, no run, punched off the back foot to cover, a consistent string of deliveries to keep Clarke on nought

8.3

Broad to Marsh, no run, tucked to midwicket from short of a length

8.4

Broad to Marsh, no run, played off the back foot into the off side

8.5

Broad to Marsh, 1 run, gets this one into a gap on the leg side between square leg and mid-on

8.6

First change of bowling as Tim Bresnan comes on

9.1

Bresnan to Clarke, no run, full at off stump, driven firmly to a straight mid-on

9.2

Bresnan to Clarke, no run, angled down the leg side, clips the pad through to Buttler so it saves a wide

9.3

Bresnan to Clarke, 1 run, defended into the leg side, almost dead-batted and the ball goes nowhere so the fielders inside the ring can't stop the single

9.4

Bresnan to Marsh, 1 run, tight run! Defended off the back foot to mid-off, Jordan the fielder and he's a bit slow getting to the ball and releasing it. Opts to throw over arm, he hits direct but has taken too long

9.5

Bresnan to Clarke, no run, left alone outside off, shaping back into Clarke

9.6

Broad gets a sixth over

10.1

Broad to Clarke, 1 run, tucked off the pads out to deep square-leg

10.2

Broad to Marsh, no run, full outside off, driven on the up to mid-off

One slip and a fine gully in place

10.3

Broad to Marsh, 2 runs, a nice piece of timing through the leg side as he flicks a straight delivery in front of square...nearly reaches the short boundary

10.4

Broad to Marsh, 1 run, touch fuller on middle and off, Marsh closes the face and finds a gap at square leg

Back to two slips for Clarke

10.5

Broad to Clarke, no run, full outside off, a slightly flat-footed drive by Clarke but safe enough

10.6

Broad to Clarke, no run, short ball outside off stump, Clarke doesn't have to do much more than just nod his head out of the way

11.1

Bresnan to Marsh, no run, defended to backward point

11.2

Bresnan to Marsh, 1 run, fuller delivery, driven towards mid-off and it's the lack of timing that gives him time for a comfortable single

11.3

Bresnan to Clarke, no run, defended with soft hands square into the off side but Morgan is quickly in from point

11.4

Bresnan to Clarke, 2 runs, neatly worked off the stumps and bisects long leg and deep square

11.5

Bresnan to Clarke, 1 run, too straight and tucked off his hip down to long leg

11.6

12.1

Tredwell to Marsh, 1 run, round the wicket, driven out to deep cover

12.2

Tredwell to Clarke, 1 run, stays round the wicket, Clarke uses his feet then tucks him off the stumps through square leg

12.3

Tredwell to Marsh, 1 run, down the pitch and pushes up to long-on

12.4

Tredwell to Clarke, no run, pushed into the on side and Tredwell gets across

13.2

Bresnan to Marsh, no run, tries to work a straight delivery into midwicket but doesn't get it much further than the cut strip

13.3

Bresnan to Marsh, no run, more power in this shot, a bottom-handed whip to a full delivery but it goes straight to midwicket

13.4

Bresnan to Marsh, 1 run, outside off, runs it down to third man

13.5

Bresnan to Clarke, no run, adjusts well to the right hander, on off stump, defended down into the pitch and it bounces back towards the keeper

13.6

Bresnan to Clarke, OUT, all over for Clarke! The pressure brings another breakthrough. Clarke tried to heave a length ball through the leg side, it was a pretty ugly shot and takes a bottom edge into off stump which ends up out of the ground

MJ Clarke b Bresnan 8 (30m 26b 0x4 0x6) SR: 30.76

Tredwell to Marsh, no run, full at off stump, opens the face and finds point

14.4

Tredwell to Marsh, FOUR, that's an excellent shot, whips it from off stump wide of mid-on for a rare boundary

Mr Nyah: "Absolutely putrid batting. England's bowlers, bar Broad, haven't swung a ball, and their fielding has been nothing short of shabby. But Australia have shown no intent whatsoever - the exact opposite of what has made this such a good Australian summer..."

14.5

15.2

Bresnan to Bailey, no run, nudges forward as he meets this fullish ball on off stump with a push into the covers.

15.3

Bresnan to Bailey, no run, safely behind that length ball, but he was looking to clip it through the midwicket region for a single, but none is available

15.4

Bresnan to Bailey, no run, nicely behind this again as Bresnan plugs away just outside off

15.5

Bresnan to Bailey, no run, good length ball, just outside off as Bailey prods forward and defends

15.6

16.2

Tredwell to Bailey, no run, again, looking to nudge it through midwicket and he ends up edging it towards the vacant silly point region

16.3

Tredwell to Bailey, no run, more circumspect this time as he defends the fullish offspinner off the front foot

16.4

Tredwell to Bailey, 1 run, moves well across his off stump and ramps it behind to fine leg for a single. Almost premeditated that to fight the line Tredwell is bowling

16.5

Tredwell to Marsh, 1 run, chips down the track and finds long-off for complete an easy single

Somehow, I feel that this series bodes ill for Australia, they've peaked at the wrong time, and have lost intent. I hope I'm wrong.

17.1

Bresnan to Marsh, no run, really tight bowling from Bresnan, keeps it just short of a good length on and around off stump as Marsh blocks to the covers

17.2

Bresnan to Marsh, 1 run, goes back and plays with soft hands as he dabs it into the off side and before cover can come swooping in on the ball, the batsman run through for the single

17.3

Bresnan to Bailey, no run, prods forward to meet the good length ball with a defensive bat.

17.4

Bresnan to Bailey, 1 run, a thickish outside edge carries the length ball on off stump to deep third man. Bailey did open the face there as he played from the crease

17.5

Bresnan to Marsh, 1 run, and there's a bit of variation. 118 kph-slower ball as Marsh tucks off of the front foot into midwicket and collects a single

17.6

Bresnan to Bailey, 1 run, followed by the short ball, not rising enough to trouble Bailey though as he pulls it down and has timed it well enough. There is protection at deep midwicket though.

18.2

Tredwell to Bailey, 1 run, flighted on off stump as he reaches the pitch and drives into the covers

18.3

Tredwell to Marsh, 1 run, has a little nip down the track and having reached to the pitch, turns it just wide of mid-on. A little fumble allows the batsmen to sneak a single

18.4

Tredwell to Bailey, no run, Bailey advances now but with the length being shortened again, he can only nudge it to the leg side

18.5

Tredwell to Bailey, 2 runs, again Buttler anticipates the sweep from Bailey and tries to keep it to none, but the ball is lobbed over the keeper's outstretched arms

19.1

Stokes to Marsh, no run, just back of a length outside off as Marsh gets in line and blocks

19.2

Stokes to Marsh, no run, fuller on off stump as he draws Marsh forward and limits him to a defensive push down the pitch

19.3

Stokes to Marsh, no run, length ball on off as this time Marsh chooses to play off the back foot. Opens the face and guides it to point

19.4

Stokes to Marsh, OUT, and he's done it! Marsh has clipped it straight to short midwicket! He's been setting a foundation, but that should might not have been part of the plan. Innocuous length ball on the pads and it was there to be whipped away through the leg side. Perhaps it might have come a little slower off the pitch, perhaps his timing was just shot, but the ball had nothing on it as it went just a little to the left of Cook, who grabbed hold quite comfortably

Out comes Glenn Maxwell, with possibly a point to prove

19.5

19.6

Stokes to Maxwell, 1 run, and he's off and running, exploiting a length ball on the pads and clipping it away to deep square leg.

20.3

Jordan to Maxwell, no run, short cover does well there, cutting across to his right and diving to keep that elegant drive, hit on the up from Maxwell. Jordan's keeping it nice and full

20.4

Jordan to Maxwell, no run, darts in off the pitch and Jordan likes it. But I suspect it might have missed leg. Hit on the knee-roll too as Maxwell is caught on the crease. Was hurrying to flick it away but he wasn't quick enough to combat the movement

20.5

Jordan to Maxwell, 1 run, fullish on off and it moves into him again, but this time Maxwell manages to squirt it away through square leg

Robbo: "Can Maxwell play a test-like innings or is the big show only able to send it over the fence at the end an innings. This will be a test for him."

21.1

Stokes to Bailey, 1 run, loses his radar this time as he offers up a full toss outside off. Bailey fails to capitalise as he goes forward and smacks it straight to point

21.2

Stokes to Maxwell, no run, very full outside off again, just inside the wide line as Maxwell looks to chop it to third man, but doesn't connect

21.3

Stokes to Maxwell, no run, full on the stumps as he drives quite nicely. Stokes gets a finger on it and the ball deflects onto the stumps as there is a bit of an appeal, but Bailey had plonked his bat inside

21.4

Stokes to Maxwell, 1 run, full and angling in on the pads as he clips it away through square leg

21.5

Stokes to Bailey, no run, full and just outside off as he drives down the ground

22.2

Jordan to Bailey, no run, fullish and targeting the stumps but Bailey is equal to the challenge

22.3

Jordan to Bailey, 1 run, no movement of the feet there as Jordan generates some inward movement off a good length. Thick inside edge helps him get off strike as the ball wanders away through square leg

22.4

Jordan to Maxwell, no run, length ball on the stumps as he looks to whip it away, but can't get bat to ball

22.5

Jordan to Maxwell, no run, pounds in on a good length as Maxwell comes forward to defend

22.6

Jordan to Maxwell, 1 run, opens the face and chops this back of a length ball outside off just to the right of the keeper

23.1

Stokes to Maxwell, 1 run, that gap just in front of square leg is proving quite useful as this short of a good length delivery is tucked away for another single

23.2

Stokes to Bailey, 1 leg bye, very tight single but Bailey makes it, courtesy the throw being deflected off his bat as he was grounding it. He'd missed the flick and Maxwell calls him through. Stokes gets to the ball quickly but can't strike the stumps direct

23.3

Stokes to Maxwell, no run, fullish on middle and off as he defends off the front foot

23.4

Stokes to Maxwell, 1 run, strays down the pads as he looks to whip it away, but has to settle for a leg bye to long leg

23.5

Stokes to Bailey, 1 run, width offered outside off stump, but it was nice and full again as Bailey sinks low and meets it with an open face

23.6

Stokes to Maxwell, 1 run, goes short this time and the line was right on middle too, but Maxwell covers it well as he goes ball and pulls it down to fine leg for a single

Time for Ravi Bopara's medium pace

24.1

Bopara to Maxwell, 1 run, length outside off as he punches it off the front foot to deep point with little fuss

24.2

Bopara to Bailey, FOUR, very clever. It had enough width for Bailey to nudge forward and open the face. Got it fine enough to beat deep third man for another boundary.

24.3

Bopara to Bailey, 1 run, this time he can't get it as fine and backward point keeps it to a single

24.4

Bopara to Maxwell, no run, went a touch wide of the crease that time as he keeps it full and on off stump. Maxwell drives back to the bowler

24.5

Bopara to Maxwell, 1 run, pushed to long-on as he meets the length ball with a good straight bat

24.6

Bopara to Bailey, no run, ducks in a touch off the pitch, which makes Bailey pull out a short-armed jab to midwicket

Christopher: "Robbo, run rate is test-like so a test-like innings from Maxwell would be appropriate - unless they're all out - final score of 175 with Maxwell still there on 32."

25.1

Stokes to Maxwell, no run, looks to dab the back of a length ball behind point, but can't place it well enough

25.2

Stokes to Maxwell, no run, draws him forward and Maxwell meets the full length ball outside off with a straight bat. Can't get it far enough away from the bowler though

25.3

Stokes to Maxwell, no run, tries a late cut, but there wasn't enough width there. Good delivery from Stokes, just short of a good length and around fifth stump

25.4

Stokes to Maxwell, 2 runs, full and just wide enough outside off for him to lean forward and play a solid cover drive

25.5

Stokes to Maxwell, 1 leg bye, stifled appeal as this is full and pushed into the pads of Maxwell. Was always going down leg

25.6

26.2

Bopara to Bailey, no run, length ball on the stumps, Bailey is content to keep it out.

26.3

Bopara to Bailey, no run, shortish, but it didn't rise high enough which foiled that pull stroke. The ball lobs off the thigh and down to the keeper

26.5

Bopara to Bailey, no run, full and just outside off as he drives, but can't time it well enough

27.3

Stokes to Maxwell, no run, head right over this one kept on a good length on off stump as he defends off the front foot

27.4

Stokes to Maxwell, 1 run, third man has more work as Maxwell guides the back of a length ball away from off stump

27.5

Stokes to Bailey, FOUR, punished and how! That brings up the hundred for Australia as Bailey pounces onto the width on offer. Rocks back and cuts it behind point with considerable authority

27.6

Stokes to Bailey, 2 runs, compensates as he tightens his line and in the process strays into the pads as he tucks it to long leg for a couple

29.1

Stokes to Maxwell, no run, searches for the blockhole and he finds it. Maxwell can do little more than stop the ball from crashing into the stumps

29.2

Stokes to Maxwell, OUT, Stokes does it again! Maxwell nicks off! He was doing reasonably well, especially with those drives through cover and dabs to third man, but this time he can't get good enough bat. It was fullish and he wanted to run it to third man again, but only manages a healthy edge through to the keeper.

45.2

Stokes to Faulkner, 1 run, closes the face and works this through square leg for another single

45.3

Stokes to Coulter-Nile, 1 run, jams down on a clunky cover drive that finds the sweeper in the deep

45.4

Stokes to Faulkner, 1 run, Stokes goes for the yorker and Faulkner turns it into a low full toss that he steers wide of mid-on

45.5

Stokes to Coulter-Nile, 1 leg bye, half a shout for lbw from Stokes as Coulter-Nile tries to work this through leg - there were two noises but it was front pad onto back pad - maybe sliding down leg but not a bad shout

45.6

Stokes to Faulkner, no run, defended away to the off side

End of over 46 (4 runs) Australia 187/7 (RR: 4.06)

Tim Bresnan gets a chance now. Will the Australians go after him?

46.1

Bresnan to Coulter-Nile, 1 run, angled down onto the pads and Coulter-Nile tries to go aerial again but just tickles it off the pad to fine leg

46.2

Bresnan to Faulkner, FOUR, Faulkner gets on away to the boundary now, he's really opened up and gone for a slog through cow corner - it has only just managed to beat the man at wide midwicket in the circle

46.3

Bresnan to Faulkner, 1 run, fuller and wide of off, Faulkner can only nudge a single

46.4

Bresnan to Coulter-Nile, FOUR, Coulter-Nile has decided he too will go after Bresnan, and he's planted the foot and launched a drive over wide mid-off, well struck and this bounces away to the boundary

46.5

Bresnan to Coulter-Nile, 1 run, more width and this time he crunches it through point

46.6

Bresnan to Faulkner, 1 run, Faulkner drives hard to mid-off and takes a single to keep the strike

End of over 47 (12 runs) Australia 199/7 (RR: 4.23)
JP Faulkner    17* (18b 2x4)      TT Bresnan    9-0-44-1

Chris Jordan now - can he get it in the right spot in these dying overs?

47.1

Jordan to Faulkner, 1 run, Faulkner backs away and Jordan follows him, this ball is clipped away through square leg to bring up the 200 for Australia

47.2

Jordan to Coulter-Nile, 1 leg bye, Coulter-Nile tries to hoick this over leg but another one just dribbles off the leg for a leg bye

47.3

Jordan to Faulkner, 1 run, good yorker length ball that Faulkner clips away through midwicket and they want two but the fielding is sharp enough to prevent it

47.4

Jordan to Coulter-Nile, 1 run, again a good yorker from Jordan, all Coulter-Nile can do is clip it away through square leg

47.5

Jordan to Faulkner, 2 runs, this time the yorker is just not quite the right length, a half-volley that Faulkner lifts over wide midwicket but the man running around on the boundary cuts it off

47.6

Jordan to Faulkner, 2 runs, another couple of runs for Faulkner as he crunches a low full toss back past Jordan

End of over 48 (8 runs) Australia 207/7 (RR: 4.31)
JP Faulkner    23* (22b 2x4)      CJ Jordan    9-0-34-0
NM Coulter-Nile    11* (13b 1x4)      TT Bresnan    9-0-44-1

48.1

Bresnan to Coulter-Nile, 1 run, half a chance here for Bresnan, a dropped chance but an incredibly tough one as Coulter-Nile drives it hard back towards the bowler's left - he thrusts the hand out and it doesn't stick

48.2

Bresnan to Faulkner, 1 run, wide of off now and crunched away towards point

48.3

Bresnan to Coulter-Nile, 1 run, uppishly driven through cover point now and Bell in the deep collects

48.4

Bresnan to Faulkner, 2 runs, well wide of off and it's a low full toss, Faulkner can only managed to pick up two over extra cover

48.5

Bresnan to Faulkner, 1 run, run-out chance here as Bresnan goes full and Faulkner's little inside edge is collected by Buttler, whose underarm throw hits the stumps. Coulter-Nile has slid the bat in nicely though and made good ground. The umpire asks for a replay but Coulter-Nile is shown to be safe

48.6

Bresnan to Coulter-Nile, 1 run, driven back past the bowler for a single

End of over 49 (7 runs) Australia 214/7 (RR: 4.36)
NM Coulter-Nile    14* (16b 1x4)      TT Bresnan    10-0-51-1
JP Faulkner    27* (25b 2x4)      CJ Jordan    9-0-34-0

England are bowling really well here, just getting the length right and giving Australia nothing short, no half-volleys. The boundaries just aren't coming at the moment. One over left for Faulkner and Coulter-Nile to find some.

49.1

Jordan to Coulter-Nile, 1 run, low full toss again and it's driven back over the head of the bowler

49.2

Jordan to Faulkner, no run, Jordan mixes it up now with the bouncer that Faulkner perhaps wasn't expecting - the attempted hook misses

49.3

Jordan to Faulkner, OUT, Jordan gets this one too full but it's brought him a wicket! Faulkner's eyes light up with a full toss at knee height, he's got it high out towards midwicket but hasn't got enough on it to clear the fielder, who takes a comfortable catch.

JP Faulkner c Morgan b Jordan 27 (40m 27b 2x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Coulter-Nile is on strike as the batsmen crossed.

49.4

Jordan to Coulter-Nile, OUT, and Jordan finds himself on a hat-trick after getting this one fast and straight enough to have Coulter-Nile lbw trying to walk across and force it through leg. That looked pretty plumb at first glance.

NM Coulter-Nile lbw b Jordan 15 (32m 18b 1x4 0x6) SR: 83.33

So, Xavier Doherty will face the hat-trick ball. He's been the last wicket in a one-day hat-trick before - when Malinga got one in 2011.

49.5

Jordan to Doherty, 1 run, no hat-trick for Jordan as Doherty gets one just outside off and crunches it through point for a single

49.6

Jordan to McKay, 1 run, McKay winds up for a slog but this is collected at mid-on and they just pick up a single

Well, that really was some excellent bowling from England, especially in those last few overs when they just didn't give the batsmen anything much to hit. The early wickets set the tone and Australia could never quite get themselves back into rhythm. George Bailey made a half-century but fell trying to lift the rate. There wasn't a single six in the innings, which tells you something. The question is whether the drop-in pitch will prove to be as difficult for England's batsmen as it seemed at time for Australia. Join us in half an hour to see whether England can chase down 218 and finish this series with a second victory.

End of over 50 (3 runs) Australia 217/9
CJ McKay    1* (1b)      CJ Jordan    10-0-37-2
XJ Doherty    1* (1b)      TT Bresnan    10-0-51-1
