England in Australia T20I Series - 1st T20I

Australia v England

Australia won by 13 runs

Players are on the way out for the first of three T20s, a packed crowd here in Hobart. Finch and White marching to the crease to open the batting for Australia and Stuart Broad has the new ball...

7.20pm So can England, rid of several players worn down by a tough tour, end this trip on a high? They've got a useful T20 side, including the No. 1-ranked T20 batsman in the world. And I would say they have more power in their order than Australia today.

Couple of surprises in the team selection. Australia hand debuts to both batsman Chris Lynn and legspinner James Muirhead. No David Warner for them or Shane Watson, both rested for this series.

Australia 1. Aaron Finch, 2. Cameron White, 3. Glenn Maxwell, 4 George Bailey (capt), 5 Chris Lynn, 6 Dan Christian, 7 Moises Henriques, 8 Matthew Wade (wkt), 9 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 James Muirhead

England bring in several fresh faces in Michael Lumb, Alex Hales, Luke Wright, Jade Dernbach and spinner Danny Briggs.

England 1 Michael Lumb, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Luke Wright, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Jos Buttler (wkt), 7 Ravi Bopara, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad (capt), 10 Jade Dernbach, 11 Danny Briggs

7.05pm Hello and welcome to the first T20 between Australia and England as this tour reaches its final leg. First to the toss and Australia have won it and will bat first as the hosts attempt to complete a clean sweep of all the formats. But, writes Daniel Brettig, the T20s provide England with a winning chance.

0.1

Broad to White, 3 runs, length ball wide enough outside off for White to swing at, he gets it over cover but not timed well enough to get it to the rope

Broad to White, no run, fuller length on off stump, pushed forward up on the off side

Broad to White, no run, good length just outside off, it nips back a little and beats the loose prod to cover of White who's beaten on the inside edge

6.2

Bopara to Finch, 1 run, very full at the off stumps, played firmly to extra cover who can only fumble

6.4

Bopara to White, no run, slower ball at the off stump, just blocked back to the bowler

6.5

Bopara to White, 1 run, slower ball on the stumps again, this is worked wide of the bowler and they get a quick single

Time for spin, here's Danny Briggs...

7.4

Briggs to Finch, FOUR, fuller length and Finch smashes this up and over extra cover, nailed

7.5

Briggs to Finch, 1 run, full length at middle and leg, tucked through square leg, they push for two but it's not on

7.6

Briggs to White, FOUR, dabbed reverse sweep, bit of an edge but gets it very fine and it skips away to the boundary

Not the best start for Briggs...

End of over 8 (14 runs) Australia 78/0 (RR: 9.75)
CL White    30* (25b 1x4 2x6)      DR Briggs    1-0-14-0
AJ Finch    47* (23b 5x4 3x6)      RS Bopara    1-0-12-0

Finch superb yet again, good progress for Australia but 200 could be par on this ground...

9.1

Briggs to White, FOUR, full length on the stumps, flourishing swing through the line, opens the face and whacks it wide of long-off, fabulous stroke

9.2

Briggs to White, 2 runs, over the wicket now, flat delivery, placed wide enough of deep-midwicket for a couple

9.3

Briggs to White, 1 run, similar delivery, worked too close to the deep-midwicket this time

9.6

Briggs to White, 2 runs, tossed up and pushed out to deep-midwicket but Bopara is too slow coming in and it's two more and fifty for White

End of over 10 (15 runs) Australia 104/0 (RR: 10.40)
CL White    50* (32b 3x4 3x6)      DR Briggs    2-0-29-0

Broad has brought himself back into the attack...

Broad to Finch, no run, full length wide of off stump, Finch had stepped to leg and was well away from it

10.2

Broad to Finch, 1 run, full length at the stumps, forced down to long-on

10.3

Broad to White, 1 run, full toss on the stumps, tried to be swung to leg, totally miscued off the splice but it's hit so badly it falls well short of long-on running in

10.4

Broad to Finch, OUT, but this carries to long-on as Finch swung hard at a length ball, aiming at the leg side and didn't get it anywhere near the middle, straight to Hales who took a solid catch

AJ Finch c Hales b Broad 52 (46m 31b 5x4 3x6) SR: 167.74

10.5

Broad to White, FOUR, delicately ran down fine past short third man, deft touch from just outside off

10.6

Broad to White, 1 run, full at the stumps, driven to long-on

End of over 11 (7 runs) Australia 111/1 (RR: 10.09)

GJ Maxwell    0* (0b)      DR Briggs    2-0-29-0

11.1

Briggs to White, 1 run, leg stump line, careful push out to long-on

11.2

Briggs to Maxwell, 1 run, goes for the reverse sweep first ball and was lucky to get some glove on that in front of all three, it rebounds to point and they get a quick single

11.3

Briggs to White, 2 runs, plays forward and runs it in between the two deep leg side fielders

11.4

Briggs to White, 1 run, full outside leg stump and ran to deep-square leg

11.5

Briggs to Maxwell, no run, forward and gets hit on the pad flicking to leg

11.6

Briggs to Maxwell, 1 wide, down the leg side for a wide, sharp take from Buttler

11.6

Briggs to Maxwell, no run, goes for the slog sweep and it hits the pad and runs not far enough away from Buttler for a leg bye

End of over 12 (6 runs) Australia 117/1 (RR: 9.75)
GJ Maxwell    1* (3b)      DR Briggs    3-0-35-0
CL White    60* (38b 4x4 3x6)      SCJ Broad    3-0-21-1

Luke Wright is going to have a bowler off a new shorter run-up...

12.1

Wright to White, SIX, steps to leg and heaves a length ball across the line onto the bank over midwicket

12.2

Wright to White, FOUR, cutter on the stumps and White manages to steer it backward of square, unlucky for the bowler that

12.3

Wright to White, FOUR, full a foot outside off, slapped wide of long-on, excellent placement, timed well too

12.4

Wright to White, (no ball) 1 run, full toss wide of off stump, swung at and it comes off a huge top edge and short long leg comes in and takes the catch but the bowler's end umpire has called no-ball on height, I'm not too sure about that, they're not even checking upstairs. Or maybe they are now asking for the third umpire, which makes perfect sense, it's close but plenty of these are ruled okay. Rule is standing position in the crease to judge on these things. But the third umpire is sticking with the on-field call

12.4

Wright to Maxwell, 1 run, length on the stumps, tried to be swung to leg and gets a toe end into the leg side for a single

12.5

Wright to White, OUT, full and straight, White swings hard across the line, huge appeal for lbw and given out England needed that badly. Looks pretty straight and struck the pad low, so it looks likely that would have hit leg stump, Hawk Eye has it only clipping but the real time shot looked good

CL White lbw b Wright 75 (57m 43b 6x4 4x6) SR: 174.41

12.6

Wright to Bailey, 1 run, full on the stumps, pressed into midwicket for an easy single

End of over 13 (18 runs) Australia 135/2 (RR: 10.38)
GJ Bailey    1* (1b)      LJ Wright    1-0-18-1
GJ Maxwell    2* (4b)      DR Briggs    3-0-35-0

13.1

Briggs to Bailey, no run, length at the stumps, tucked to point stepping back

13.2

Briggs to Bailey, 1 run, down the track, worked to short long leg and they take a sharp single

13.3

Briggs to Maxwell, FOUR, reverse sweep from outside leg and gets enough bat to clear point

13.4

Briggs to Maxwell, SIX, goes again and this is nailed over cover for six! Pietersen-esque! Nails the reverse slog sweep into the stands, amazing shot

13.5

Briggs to Maxwell, 1 wide, leg side wide

13.5

Briggs to Maxwell, 2 runs, full on leg stump, clipped to deep-midwicket, they take on Bopara for the second and get home comfortably

13.6

Briggs to Maxwell, FOUR, conventional sweep this time and finds the gap backward of square

End of over 14 (18 runs) Australia 153/2 (RR: 10.92)
GJ Maxwell    18* (8b 2x4 1x6)      DR Briggs    4-0-53-0
GJ Bailey    2* (3b)      LJ Wright    1-0-18-1

Broad again now...

14.1

Broad to Bailey, 1 run, forward just outside off, dabbed into the covers for a single

14.2

Broad to Maxwell, no run, full length wide of off stump, tried to be carved off the back foot but misses

14.3

Broad to Maxwell, 1 run, straighter and dabbed into square leg for a quick single

14.4

Broad to Bailey, 1 run, length outside off, pushed to short third man for a quick single

14.5

Broad to Maxwell, no run, full at the off stump, a huge heave to leg brings an inside edge that doesn't carry through to Buttler

14.6

Broad to Maxwell, 1 run, length ball on off stump, dabbed into the covers for a single

Superb set from Stuart Broad, showing his team the way...

End of over 15 (4 runs) Australia 157/2 (RR: 10.46)
GJ Maxwell    20* (12b 2x4 1x6)      SCJ Broad    4-0-25-1
GJ Bailey    4* (5b)      DR Briggs    4-0-53-0

Bopara again...

15.1

Bopara to Maxwell, OUT, full on the stumps, goes to reverse slog sweep and chips it to point easy catch for Bresnan. Horrible shot really, he never gets his head down enough does Maxwell. Back of the hand delivery from Bopara does the trick, Maxwell never got under the full delivery

GJ Maxwell c Bresnan b Bopara 20 (24m 13b 2x4 1x6) SR: 153.84

Now Chris Lynn on debut...

15.2

Bopara to Lynn, 1 run, full length turned into the leg side, just a single

15.3

Bopara to Bailey, no run, back of a length at the body, Bailey misses with a pull

15.4

Bopara to Bailey, 1 run, full at the stumps, forced down the ground off an inside edge, just a single

15.5

Bopara to Lynn, no run, similar length delivery, tried to be pushed up the wicket but only finds the bowler this time

15.6

Bopara to Lynn, 1 run, length just outside off, pressed to cover

Another superb over, can England drag this back...

End of over 16 (3 runs) Australia 160/3 (RR: 10.00)
CA Lynn    2* (3b)      RS Bopara    3-0-26-1
GJ Bailey    5* (7b)      SCJ Broad    4-0-25-1

Bresnan returns, he and Dernbach to bowl at the death here...

16.1

Bresnan to Lynn, SIX, length at the stumps, a stand and deliver smash straight over the bowler's head

16.2

Bresnan to Lynn, 1 run, better length, this is forced down to long-off

16.3

Bresnan to Bailey, 1 run, full length wide of off stump, reached for and chipped just short of extra cover

16.4

Bresnan to Lynn, 1 wide, yorker length wide of off stump, too wide this time

16.4

Bresnan to Lynn, 1 run, full at the stumps, forced down the ground and just one to long-on

16.5

Bresnan to Bailey, 2 runs, full just outside off, steered wide of third man for a couple

16.6

Bresnan to Bailey, 1 run, full again, driven out to deep cover

End of over 17 (13 runs) Australia 173/3 (RR: 10.17)
GJ Bailey    9* (10b)      TT Bresnan    3-0-26-0
CA Lynn    10* (6b 1x6)      RS Bopara    3-0-26-1

Dernbach as expected...

17.1

Dernbach to Bailey, 1 bye, full following Bailey who stepped to leg and misses, Buttler makes an excellent diving save and nearly gets up to run out Lynn

17.2

Dernbach to Lynn, no run, slower ball on a length outside off, slapped off the toe of the bat back to the bowler

17.3

Dernbach to Lynn, no run, full at leg stump, driven back to the bowler, well saved from Dernbach

17.4

Dernbach to Lynn, SIX, length ball, Lynn steps to leg and swings it into the building site, nailed it. But the length was simply the wrong one

17.5

Dernbach to Lynn, 5 no balls, full toss at the body, Lynn gloves it down the leg side and it runs for four, definitely a no ball on height but byes given! I don't think so

17.5

Dernbach to Lynn, no run, yorker at the stumps, forced back to the bowler

17.6

Dernbach to Lynn, 1 run, steps across the line and swings to leg, not struck properly and a good job for Lynn because it lands in front of deep-square leg running in

End of over 18 (13 runs) Australia 186/3 (RR: 10.33)
CA Lynn    17* (12b 2x6)      JW Dernbach    3-0-37-0
GJ Bailey    9* (11b)      TT Bresnan    3-0-26-0

Australia have got going again...

18.1

Bresnan to Lynn, 2 runs, full outside off, swung down the ground off a thick inside edge to long-off, they take on the fielder and get back for two, Bailey doesn't want the bowling

18.2

Bresnan to Lynn, no run, yorker length just inside the guideline offside off - I love that delivery - tried to be chopped away but missed

18.3

Bresnan to Lynn, SIX, just misses the length and gets whacked over long-off, lovely clean hit

18.4

Bresnan to Lynn, 1 run, full and wide, reached for and gets a toe-end out to deep cover

18.5

Bresnan to Bailey, FOUR, low full toss and Bailey finally times one, clubbing this wide of mid-on

18.6

Bresnan to Bailey, 1 run, full and wide, reached for again and gets a toe end to cover, 200 up

End of over 19 (14 runs) Australia 200/3 (RR: 10.52)
GJ Bailey    14* (13b 1x4)      TT Bresnan    4-0-40-0
CA Lynn    26* (16b 3x6)      JW Dernbach    3-0-37-0

Sixth time Australia have scored over 200 in a T20 batting first...

19.1

Dernbach to Bailey, OUT, full delivery outside off out of the back of the hand, swung hard at and gets it straight up in the air and Bresnan takes the catch at point

GJ Bailey c Bresnan b Dernbach 14 (29m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

19.2

Dernbach to Lynn, 2 runs, full at the stumps, swung down the ground, they sprint and nick a second of long-on

19.3

Dernbach to Lynn, FOUR, full at the stumps, Lynn steps to the off side and paddle sweeps, gets it over the 45 and that runs away for four, lovely touch

19.4

Dernbach to Lynn, 1 run, right up there again, tries to play straight and forces it back to the bowler, they steal a single

19.5

Dernbach to Christian, FOUR, steps right across the line and takes a length ball behind square on the leg side, somehow forces it between keeper and the 45

19.6

Dernbach to Christian, 2 runs, swept hard and gets it between deep-midwicket and deep-square leg for a couple

That's a formidable total from Australia. White and Finch at the top were excellent and just as it looked as if England were dragging it back slightly, Lynn played a lovely little hand on debut to push Australia on. England have plenty of batting to do and they will begin their chase in 10 minutes...

End of over 20 (13 runs) Australia 213/4
DT Christian    6* (2b 1x4)      JW Dernbach    4-0-50-1
