England tour of Australia, 3rd T20I: Australia v England at Sydney, Feb 2, 2014
Australia won by 84 runs
2 February 2014 - night match (20-over match)

Twinky little countdown done with, Stuart Broad is ready to bowl the first ball...

7.35pm: Right, time to be getting on with things. The teams are expected out shortly - now, in fact, though we still appear to be waiting for something.

Here's Oliver Jones with a rallying cry to chill the bones: "Come on England. If nothing else, put in a performance that doesn't make anyone aged 25+ begging to go back to the days where our batting tail was Gough, Tufnell, Malcolm and Fraser."

7.30pm: The Olympic Park is home to Sydney Thunder #oneinarow, who might give England a game at the moment. There's a short straight boundary at each end, though the square looks green, hopefully a bit of pace in a hard, white drop-in strip.

"Thanks to ESPN team for a great two summers. Because I where I live I have barely seen a ball bowled or hit, from the start of Ashes one, but have enjoyed the coverage you provide regularly. It's all been good fun, even the defeats." It has been our pleasure, Steve Pickering. By and large. I'm sure Alex, Gnasher, George, David, Jarrod, Brydon, Dan and sundry others would agree (once they've left the darkened room).

7.20pm: This match also marks the end of the back-to-back Ashes grindathon, which began in England in July, around 7000 years ago. Has it all been worth it? No I'll leave you to decide. There's expected to be a crowd of 50,000 plus in the Olympic Stadium, so Australians clearly haven't tired of Pommie bashing yet.

Mark, for one, is praying for the shotgun to the temple: "For mercy's sake can we end this without playing the final, dead rubber, as they would in the Davis Cup?"

"Dernbach selected again !!! What more does a man have to do to be left out of a side." Haven't you read the preview, Shaun? He's one of today's key men - England need him to rediscover his box of tricks for the WT20.

7.10pm Australia have won the toss and will bat, George Bailey is grinning again, as he does. Australia have made two changes, with Chris Lynn, er, rested and Josh Hazlewood dropping out for Daniel Christian and Ben Cutting. England also make two changes, Jordan replacing James Tredwell and Ben Stokes in for Michael Lumb, with Luke Wright to open.

Australia) 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Cameron White, 3 Brad Hodge, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 George Bailey (capt), 6 Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Ben Cutting, 9 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 James Muirhead.

England 1 Luke Wright, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Ravi Bopara, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Ben Stokes, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad (capt), 10 Chris Jordan, 11 Jade Dernbach.

7.05pm: The toss and teams should be carried out momentarily - sounds like Chris Jordan is going to make a T20 debut, from noises around the ground.

England, as you'll know by now, have not only been beaten 11 times on this tour but they've also lost a coach. Jason Gillespie, a former team-mate of Australia coach Darren Lehmann and highly regarded for his work at Yorkshire, has ruled himself out of the running. Here are some of the other candidates to replace Andy Flower.

7pm: Hello and welcome - it's nearly all over. Has this been England's worst ever tour? Let's go with a simple 'Yes'. Losing at the earliest opportunity in three formats is pretty special and that's before you take into account the margin and nature of the defeats. Even a consolation victory here at the Olympic Stadium would be little consolation, though the fact this is their last stop in Australia may inspire a sort of demob happiness. Anyway, Australia, as ever, are looking to rub it in - as you'll discover in our preview. I'm Alan Gardner and I'll be joined by Alex Winter to read the last rites.

0.1

Broad to White, no run, slightly back of a length, around the line of off, White goes back and across and defends with a straight bat

0.2

Broad to White, no run, shortish, touch more width, White jabs at it and squirts the ball in front of point, Morgan stops it well to prevent one

0.3

Broad to White, 1 run, cross-seam delivery from Broad, Finch pushes it on the full wide of short extra cover for a single

0.4

Broad to Finch, 1 run, on the stumps, worked back past the bowler, mid-on moves across to his left

0.5

Broad to White, 1 run, on the stumps, worked off the legs through square

There's a terrific atmosphere in the ground, big crowd in and this stadium seems to contain the noise. Encouragement for England might be provided by the fact it's where the rugby team lifted the 2003 World Cup

0.6

Broad to Finch, no run, good length, outside the line and Finch guides it into the covers

End of over 1 (3 runs) Australia 3/0 (RR: 3.00)

    • AJ Finch 1 (2b)
    • CL White 2 (4b)
    • SCJ Broad 1-0-3-0

Chris Jordan will open up from the other end, his first bowl in T20 internationals

1.1

Jordan to White, 1 wide, and he starts with a wide, firing this narrowly down the leg side

1.1

Jordan to White, no run, pitched up, wide enough to get White's dander up, but he miscues and thick inside edge into his pads

1.2

Jordan to White, no run, angled in, slightly full again, clipped firmly to leg where Bresnan makes a diving stop at midwicket

1.3

Jordan to White, 2 runs, on the stumps and flicked behind square this time, Dernbach makes a bit of a meal of stopping it at fine leg

"The delay was because the host broadcaster (Channel 9) had a late running show." Ah, thanks, Brad. Was it worth hanging on for?

1.4

Jordan to White, 1 run, digs this in short and White takes it on, pulling aerially down towards Dernbach, who can't make up the ground and settles for making a goalie stop on the bounce

1.5

Jordan to Finch, no run, length ball, nips back a touch and rattles into the pads, might have been some bat involved, height an issue too

1.6

Jordan to Finch, no run, Finch backs away and Jordan follows him, sends a length ball zipping through past a swing and a miss - decent first over from Jordan

End of over 2 (4 runs) Australia 7/0 (RR: 3.50)

    • AJ Finch 1 (4b)
    • CL White 5 (8b)
    • CJ Jordan 1-0-4-0
    • SCJ Broad 1-0-3-0
2.1

Broad to White, no run, length ball, tight line around off, tapped short on the off side

"So England need a Jonny Wilkinson?" They couldn't do much worse, Brian

2.2

Broad to White, FOUR, you beauty! That's a shot from White, driven crisply, furiously even, on the up and straight back past Broad for the first boundary. Wasn't overpitched but took some punishment

2.3

Broad to White, FOUR, goes again, this time on the pull, Broad dropping short and being carted high over midwicket - he's up and running now

2.4

Broad to White, 1 run, length in the channel, stays back and opens the face to run one to third man

2.5

Broad to Finch, 1 run, punches a length ball down the ground, just one as mid-on and mid-off converge

"It was a reality TV show about home renovating," says Rompingwins. "Yawn." Whereas this one is more about demolition

2.6

Broad to White, no run, ripper from Broad, beats the batsman for pace as the ball zips through off the pitch

End of over 3 (10 runs) Australia 17/0 (RR: 5.66)

    • CL White 14 (13b 2x4)
    • AJ Finch 2 (5b)
    • SCJ Broad 2-0-13-0
    • CJ Jordan 1-0-4-0
3.1

Jordan to Finch, FOUR, Jordan tries the chin music on Finch, whose swats it away at chest height, loopy pull shot but it bounces away to the rope

3.2

Jordan to Finch, no run, this was slightly more ungainly (less gainly?), as Finch makes room and swings wildly at a short ball that bounces over the stumps

3.3

Jordan to Finch, 1 run, short and at the batsman, pulled flat through midwicket, there's a fielder out there now

3.4

Jordan to White, no run, down the leg side, there's a scrape of something - most likely pad - and Buttler then takes a terrific low catch diving to his left. Saved a leg bye, he did

3.5

Jordan to White, 1 leg bye, fires the ball in full at White's feet as he wanders to leg, deflects away square

3.6

Jordan to Finch, 1 run, full, attempted yorker, nearly catches Finch out, he swipes an inside edge to deep square leg

End of over 4 (7 runs) Australia 24/0 (RR: 6.00)

    • AJ Finch 8 (9b 1x4)
    • CL White 14 (15b 2x4)
    • CJ Jordan 2-0-10-0
    • SCJ Broad 2-0-13-0

England going okay so far, the wheel nuts still screwed tight. Tim Bresnan replaces Broad

4.1

Bresnan to Finch, no run, good length on the stumps, blocked watchfully

4.2

Bresnan to Finch, 1 run, pulled, not out of the middle, straight to midwicket but dropped by Jordan! Maybe I spoke too soon... It flew fairly quickly, such is Finch's power, but should have been taken, around head height

4.3

Bresnan to White, no run, seams back a touch and cramps Whites for room, hitting him near the bread basket

4.4

Bresnan to White, no run, on the stumps, worked back on the leg side, Jordan scampers in to field

4.5

Bresnan to White, 1 run, tight line outside off from Bresnan, an inside edge bobbles short on the off side and they get one

4.6

Bresnan to Finch, 1 run, opens the face and runs a single to short third man

"Just heard Nick Knight suggest Morgan as England ODI and T20 skipper... probably make Morgan step up and become a Test player again. Broad is not captain material and Cook could concentrate on Tests." Sounds like Nick has been reading our own Rob Smyth, Tony

End of over 5 (3 runs) Australia 27/0 (RR: 5.40)

    • AJ Finch 10 (12b 1x4)
    • CL White 15 (18b 2x4)

    • CJ Jordan 2-0-10-0

Another change, England's Bright Spot of the Tour, Ben Stokes on for Jordan

5.1

Stokes to Finch, no run, starts well, length ball on off stump, tapped into the off side

5.2

Stokes to Finch, SIX, clubbed over deep backward square, that's a monstrous flick from Finch, the first six of the innings! He came forward out of the crease, made the delivery a half-volley on his pads, but the nonchalance with which he launched the ball over the rope was astounding

5.3

Stokes to Finch, 2 runs, on leg stump, worked through square leg for a couple more

5.4

Stokes to Finch, no run, good pace, around off stump, Finch has a big old ballyhoo and fails to connect

5.5

Stokes to Finch, SIX, six more, into the crowd at long-on! Overptiched from Stokes and he's taken downtown by the little big man again, crrrrrrrrrrrrunched back over his head

5.6

Stokes to Finch, no run, shortens his length wisely, outside off, guides the ball straight to short third man

End of over 6 (14 runs) Australia 41/0 (RR: 6.83)

    • AJ Finch 24 (18b 1x4 2x6)
    • CL White 15 (18b 2x4)
    • BA Stokes 1-0-14-0
    • TT Bresnan 1-0-3-0
6.1

Bresnan to White, 1 run, length outside off, White attacks but can't replicate Finch's hitting, skewing a thick edge to third man on the bounce

6.2

Bresnan to Finch, SIX, here goes Finch again - he loves playing against England - carting a slightly fill ball out towards wide long-on, Hales gets round to it but appeared uncertain where the boundary was and compounds his drop but sending it beyond the rope. Tough but takeable

6.3

Bresnan to Finch, no run, on the stumps, played respectfully back this time

6.4

Bresnan to Finch, OUT, on the attack, doesn't get hold of a pull and plops the ball to mid-on! England have got their aggressor, Bresnan winkles him out with a half-tracker, miscalculation from Finch, who tried to pull from outside off, maybe wasn't quite short enough either and spooned to the fielder

AJ Finch c Broad b Bresnan 30 (29m 21b 1x4 3x6) SR: 142.85

In comes Glenn Maxwell at No. 3 again. Big Show or No Show today?

6.5

Bresnan to Maxwell, 1 run, full and down the leg side, squirts it through square leg to get off the mark

6.6

Bresnan to White, 1 run, tight stuff from Bresnan, on off stump and tickled down the ground for one more

End of over 7 (9 runs) Australia 50/1 (RR: 7.14)

    • CL White 17 (20b 2x4)
    • GJ Maxwell 1 (1b)
    • TT Bresnan 2-0-12-1
    • BA Stokes 1-0-14-0

Here's Andrew C: "Either England are bowling much better today or it is a slow pitch. I can't believe the third option: White and Finch a bit risk averse today! Wonder what a par score would be? And as I type Finch is taking to Stokes, so maybe a bit redundant!" Probably a bit of both, Andrew. Maybe 160?

7.1

Stokes to White, no run, good length outside off, White swings and misses

7.2

Stokes to White, 1 run, low full toss on the stumps, clipped low through the leg side to deep midwicket

7.3

Stokes to Maxwell, no run, pitched up wide of the wicket, Maxwell fiddles at it and fails to connect

7.4

Stokes to Maxwell, 1 wide, spears this down the leg side - wide

7.4

Stokes to Maxwell, SIX, brutal, Maxwell smears a flat six over wide long-off! Maybe a touch full from Stokes and Maxwell backed away to smoke it into the crowd

7.5

Stokes to Maxwell, no run, takes the pace off and the ball bounces over the stumps as Maxwell walks across and attempts a cute dab behind square

7.6

Stokes to Maxwell, 1 run, back of a length, outside off, smacked down the ground with a baseball slug but straight to long-on

End of over 8 (9 runs) Australia 59/1 (RR: 7.37)

    • GJ Maxwell 8 (5b 1x6)
    • CL White 18 (22b 2x4)
    • BA Stokes 2-0-23-0
    • TT Bresnan 2-0-12-1

Stuart Broad brings himself back on, after a tidy couple from Bresnan

8.1

Broad to Maxwell, SIX, boom, six more! Broad goes short and follows Maxwell, who simply roundhouses it on its way over deep backward square

8.2

Broad to Maxwell, OUT, swings again but Maxwell has holed out to long-on! The ball was back of a length, Maxwell tried to cross-batter it again, came high off the bat and straight to the man running in from the fence. Another frenzied failure from Maxwell

GJ Maxwell c Hales b Broad 14 (7m 7b 0x4 2x6) SR: 200.00

In comes Ben Cutting, promoted up the order. He can give it some tap... White on strike, though, as they crossed

8.3

Broad to White, 1 run, leg-stump line, closes the face and works one to backward square leg

8.4

Broad to Cutting, 2 runs, goes back and runs a couple down to third man

8.5

Broad to Cutting, no run, tries to dab the ball to the same part of the ground and it's cut off on the edge of the ring, Lumb the substitute, he has a shy with Cutting stranded but fails to hit!

8.6

Broad to Cutting, SIX, launches into a length ball and sends it high, high, high and just beyond the boundary at long-on. Told you

End of over 9 (15 runs) Australia 74/2 (RR: 8.22)

Right, here's Jade Dernbach. Get buckled in

9.1

Dernbach to White, no run, starts with a length ball on the stumps, White gets behind the line

Not been quite as fluent tonight, White, but he's still there, anchoring things

9.2

Dernbach to White, 2 runs, fuller, in the channel, driven through the covers for a couple into the deep

9.3

Dernbach to White, no run, good line, White pushes into the off side, cut off in the circle

9.4

Dernbach to White, 1 run, now the slower ball from Dernbach, out the back of the hand, White watches it on to the bat around leg stump and steers one through square

9.5

Dernbach to Cutting, 1 run, length ball outside the line of off, opens the face and guides one to third man

9.6

Dernbach to White, 1 run, full and straight, right up in the blockhole, White bunts one to long-on - not bad, Jade, not bad

Time for a change in the hot-and-sweaty seat. Here's Alex

End of over 10 (5 runs) Australia 79/2 (RR: 7.90)

10.1

Bresnan to White, FOUR, full ball on the stumps, swung into the leg side, powerful strike and runs to the fence

10.2

Bresnan to White, FOUR, slower ball on leg stump, flicked very fine and it skips away for four more

10.3

Bresnan to White, 1 run, Bresnan drags his length back and gets punched down to long-on

10.4

Bresnan to Cutting, SIX, length ball and heaved over the longest part of the ground, big smash right across the line and nailed it into the stands

10.5

Bresnan to Cutting, 2 runs, lovely timed straight drive but it cannons the bowler's end stumps and ricochets into midwicket for a couple

10.6

Bresnan to Cutting, 1 run, excellent yorker, dug out down to long-off

End of over 11 (18 runs) Australia 97/2 (RR: 8.81)

Dernbach to Cutting, 1 wide, full but well wide of off stump, 100 up

11.3

Dernbach to Cutting, no run, excellent quick yorker and Cutting is hurried into digging out the toe-crusher

11.4

Dernbach to Cutting, FOUR, full length swung hard down the ground, Root sliding to his left at long-on misses, perhaps could have done better there

11.5

Dernbach to Cutting, no run, slower ball on leg stump and Cutting seems to nudge around the corner but ends up shovelling it off his elbow to the 45

11.6

Dernbach to Cutting, no run, full outside off, big swing and a miss

12.1

12.3

Stokes to White, 1 run, full length angled in, pushed firmly down to long-off

12.4

Stokes to Cutting, no run, length ball, Cutting opens up to swing it to leg but misses

No specialist spinner for England but Joe Root is going to send a few down here...

13.1

Root to White, 1 run, around the wicket, flicked out to deep midwicket for an easy single

13.2

Root to Cutting, OUT, down the track, punches firmly back towards the bowler but Root reaches out to his left and clings onto a rifling chance that was struck very well but evidently too straight and Root intervened to perfect effect

BCJ Cutting c & b Root 29 (22m 16b 1x4 3x6) SR: 181.25

13.3

Root to Bailey, no run, down the track, goes to flick to leg but gets struck on the thigh pad

13.4

Root to Bailey, FOUR, another step down the wicket, this time picks it up over the leg side and places it perfectly in between deep midwicket and long-on

13.5

Root to Bailey, 2 runs, now smashes off side and Jordan has to run to his left to field, does well

13.6

Root to Bailey, SIX, another step down and hits this off a length over long-on, cracking timing again

Jordan is back...

14.1

Jordan to White, OUT, full down the leg side, White flicks at it, there's a polite enquiry and it's given out! The slightest of edges according to Snicko but that a very good decision from the umpire. Innocent little flash down the leg side and Jordan has picked up a cheap wicket

CL White c †Buttler b Jordan 41 (65m 37b 4x4 1x6) SR: 110.81

14.2

Jordan to Hodge, 1 run, cut stroke to backward point, the throw - for some reason - comes into the bowler's end and there's no-one covering so they get a buzzard to long-on

14.3

Jordan to Bailey, 1 run, bumper, Bailey swats it from over his head to deep square leg

14.4

Jordan to Hodge, FOUR, slightly short of a length outside off, cut stroke takes a huge inside edge and it narrowly evades the stumps but evades Buttler's dive too

15.4

Broad to Hodge, OUT, short again but this time pulled straight to long leg where Dernbach doesn't have to move to take it at head height, solid catch and the short ball works this time, the shot was pretty firmly struck but he picked out the fielder with perfection

BJ Hodge c Dernbach b Broad 7 (7m 7b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

15.5

Broad to Christian, no run, full length on off stump, blocked back to the bowler

15.6

Broad to Christian, OUT, full length, nips back a little, Christian pokes at it in the crease, and gets a thick inside edge that takes middle stump another wicket for England who are just coming back into this. Very poor footwork, i.e. none, from Christian

17.5

Dernbach to Wade, FOUR, short at the body and hammered behind square, nailed the pull

    • GJ Bailey 23 (14b 1x4 1x6)
    • TT Bresnan 4-0-42-1
    • JW Dernbach 3-0-23-0

JD for the last set, how many can Bailey and Wade slug here, 180?

19.1

Dernbach to Bailey, FOUR, short ball outside off and Bailey swings wildly at it, gets it off the toe and finds wide long-on

19.2

Dernbach to Bailey, SIX, slower ball bouncer, Bailey steps back and whacks it mid-off and it clears the rope! Amazing shot, what power

Make that 190...

19.3

Dernbach to Bailey, SIX, slower on the stumps, Bailey swings it hard over the leg side and clears the rope again! Slower ball picked up and it has enough length to carry wide long-on

19.4

Dernbach to Bailey, FOUR, full and wide of off stump, Bailey reaches out and hammers this wide of deep cover, that almost carried for six as well

19.5

Dernbach to Bailey, FOUR, length outside off, Bailey swings it away again, this past extra cover and there's enough pace to find the fence again!

19.6

Dernbach to Bailey, 2 runs, full and wide, Bailey has to almost dive across for it, gets a thick outside edge to third man, Wright saves with super dive and throws back to Buttler who manages to miss the stumps with a flick of the hands meaning Bailey got back for the second

What a final over from Bailey and has taken Australia from what was only a par score to a very good total, England would not have been expecting to chase above 190 when they took a flurry of wickets to reduce Australia to 139 for 6 with four overs to go. But Bailey's blinder puts Australia in the box seat for another win and Monty will be back with the final innings of this tour shortly...
