Australia tour of England and Scotland, 1st T20I: England v Australia at Southampton, Aug 29, 2013
Australia won by 39 runs
29 August 2013 - night match (20-over match)

Out come the players, they line up and, oh heavens there might be national anthems, pray there aren't national anthems. Phew crisis averted. Just a shake of hands before the run to the middle. Warner and Finch with the mum's and dad's on and Steven Finn to open the bowling from the Northern End...

BJ: "I'm amused. The last time England played a T20, James Tredwell was their captain (admittedly for all 2 deliveries worth), and now he's not even in the XI." Indeed, I think everyone is surprised that he's not playing here. Danny Briggs is England's spinner. He is on his home ground so maybe England thought it was best to us him here. But that school of thought obviously didn't prevail regarding Carberry.

6.20pm So Fawad Ahmed gets a game but this will be only his second-ever professional T20 match! Somewhat of a gamble you may think. He's previous T20 was for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League and he didn't exactly excel, going for 34 from his four overs.

James: "If England wanted to give Carberry a debut, surely more sensible to do it on his home ground?" Perhaps they want they're strongest XI out for the first fixture and then use the second as more of an experiment.

Sakush: "Australia missed a trick by omitting Cameron White from the squad. Scored 417 runs at 46.33 and a strike rate 125.60 with four fifties to help unfancied Northamptonshire to the FLt20 title. He was well acclimatised to English conditions."

6.10pm So what do we make of that? No Carberry on his home ground for England, which is slightly surprising considering his excellent form in the Friends Life t20. Saying that, I didn't pick him in my preview to this game. But I do think he'll play at Durham, no point bringing him into the squad otherwise. And for Australia, Watson now seems to be penned in at No. 3 for all formats, there's a place for Finch and Marsh - not the experience of Adam Voges - and Hazlewood too. But we can finally get a look at Fawad Ahmed after all manner of discussion about him.

6pm Time for the toss and we've got two new captains out in the middle with Stuart Broad taking the reins for England and George Bailey the Australian supremo. Up goes the coin, Bailey calls heads, it lands tails and England will bowl first with Broad fancying a chase with England's hitters. There's no Michael Carberry despite his excellent form.

England 1 Alex Hales, 2 Michael Lumb, 3 Luke Wright, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Jos Buttler, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Steven Finn, 10 Danny Briggs, 11 Jade Dernbach

Bailey was going to have a bat anyway on what he reckons is a good wicket and the big news for Australia is that Fawad Ahmed is going to make his debut.

Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Shaun Marsh, 5 George Bailey, 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Matthew Wade, 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Fawad Ahmed

5.50pm BST Hello everyone, well this ain't the Ashes but we've got some more England v Australia entertainment to bring you. A little T20 tonight from the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, so strap in and get ready for the ride. This is the first of two T20s, the next coming on Saturday where they sensibly decided to schedule it as far away as they possible could; everyone has to trek up to Durham in two days' time!

0.1

Finn to Warner, no run, full length on middle and off, Warner blocks it on the crease, that disturbed the top of the surface, pretty dry wicket

0.2

Finn to Warner, 2 leg byes, back of a length, fended off down the leg side, it runs fine of long leg and they get back for second leg bye

0.3

Finn to Warner, no run, goes to pull a ball that isn't that short and misses, it goes over off stump

0.4

Finn to Warner, 1 run, pulled again, doesn't control the stroke and it takes the top edge down towards long leg but lands a few yards short, fortunate for Warner that

0.5

Finn to Finch, SIX, just back of a length on off stump and Finch is onto it straight away to slam it over deep square leg, absolutely nailed, was probably a good length ball actually, that was creamed just rocking back

0.6

Finn to Finch, 1 run, similar length, perhaps a touch wider of off stump, this is pushed to extra cover on the back foot

Great first over for Australia...

It's gone straight up and Buttler goes across to take the skier. They check the no ball, Broad is always close right on the line this is mighty tight and Broad is just about okay but that was exceptionally tight

DA Warner c †Buttler b Broad 1 (6m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 20.00

1.3

Broad to Finch, FOUR, good length just outside off, Finch plays at it from the crease and gets a thick edge right to wear slip would have been but Broad had taken the fielder out

1.5

2.1

Finn to Finch, 1 wide, full but leg side

2.1

Finn to Finch, FOUR, full and leg side again, this time Finch gets a meaty flick on it and steers it away wide of short long leg

2.2

Finn to Finch, FOUR, now a half-volley on off stump, in the slot for Finch who clubs it over mid-on, bit of a whack but well timed

2.3

Finn to Finch, no run, goes again, this time with an uglier slog, doesn't time this at all and rolls it towards mid-on

2.4

Finn to Finch, FOUR, slower ball on the stumps, spotted and flicked over the on-side, times this well again and gets it on the bounce to the midwicket fence

2.5

Finn to Finch, no run, better length and a decent line on middle and off, forward comes Finch to dab it towards midwicket who dives and saves the single before mid-on gets the chance to do so

2.6

Finn to Finch, no run, very full on off stump, too full to try and slug it over the top, drives this firmly up towards mid-off

And that, ladies and gentleman, is why Finn was dropped earlier in the year #expensive ...

Richard: "Although England fancy themselves as chasers I think they should have batted. The pitch is so good they would post a huge total. Better that than chase a huge total which will be tricky if Fawad Ahmed bowls well."

4.1

Finn to Finch, 1 run, length on middle and leg, clipped out through square leg but Root on the rope does well and saves two

4.2

Dernbach to Finch, FOUR, full just outside off, Finch slugs it down the ground and boo! Only four, muscled away

17.2

Dernbach to Finch, OUT, slower ball, Finch backs to leg, swings square and drags it onto middle stump ending a truly spectacular innings. 17.3

Dernbach to Maxwell, 1 run, full outside off, dabbed into the covers

This is Australia's highest T20 score. Finn is back...

18.1

Finn to Bailey, OUT, full on the stumps, Bailey tried to tickle it into the leg side, missed and it given out lbw straight by the umpire. Bailey got across his stumps and try to flick a full delivery towards midwicket but he missed and when you're in front of all three it ain't a good idea to be missing the ball

Finn to Wade, SIX, length a foot wide of off stump, Wade able to take a clean swing at it and clears long-on, great strike

18.6

Finn to Wade, FOUR, pulls this off the front foot over the leg side, doesn't quite nail it and there's a chance for Hales at deep midwicket, he dives forward but can't take the catch and lets it bounce past him for four more

19.1

Dernbach to Maxwell, OUT, full and straight, Maxwell misses and Dernbach takes out his off stump, Dernback picking up a few late wickets here. Simple modus operandi there, quick delivery from slightly wide on the crease angled into the stumps and I did warn the Aussies about missing straight balls

GJ Maxwell b Dernbach 1 (9m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

19.2

Dernbach to Faulkner, 1 run, same delivery, driven to extra cover, they run automatically and the fielder doesn't bother to throw

19.3

Dernbach to Wade, no run, slower ball, Wade looks a little silly in aiming a big strike over the leg side, totally deceived and misses

19.4

Dernbach to Wade, 1 run, full just outside off, pushed to cover point, they again run without thought

19.5

Dernbach to Faulkner, 2 runs, another slower ball on the stumps, a little pitching wedge over the in-field, long-off runs around to field

19.6

Dernbach to Faulkner, 2 runs, full and straight, dug out down the ground, they sprint and get back for two, well ran

Phew. What a whirlwind 90 minutes that was. An amazing innings and most of it was from Aaron Finch who blasted the highest individual score in a T20 international, it was a blistering innings and he blew England away from the very first ball he faced - which went for six! Australia have the second-highest international T20 total and surprise, surprise, England will need a record chase to win the match. Monty will see if they can pull off a miracle in 10 minutes time...

End of over 20 (6 runs) Australia 248/6

    • MS Wade 15 (7b 2x4 1x6)
