Recently, I came across a rather unusual and lesser known anecdote of the usage for a cricket ball. Lord March, or more lovingly known as Charles Lennox wagered a considerable sum of money with another nobleman that if he wills, he can make a letter travel 100 miles within an hour. Well, given the 18th century backdrop of weather balloons and running messengers, gramophones and penny-farthings, landaus and fiacres, it can be a daunting task if you ask me. Little did the other bettor realize how His Lordship used 20 cricketers - all catching experts - to throw the ball with the letter enclosed, in a circular merry-go-round fashion from one fella' to another. The ground was measured afterwards which proved to be 120 miles, therefore winning the wager.
Expand the boundaries of imagination and one can create further ways to use the cherry:
1. A shoelace (think seam!)
2. For a prince to wrap his love letter on a red handkerchief and throw it over the castle wall to his princess
3. Use as a measurement on a hand-held scale, which can be seen in the local market, to settle purchase-related disputes (it weighs between 5.5 and 5.75 ounces)
4. Use it as a volume-displacement measure to fire the dishonest goldsmith from court
5. Use it as a metaphor for the starting point of zero-dimension and gradually create Euclidean mathematics
6. Draw parallel lines on it which meet to gradually create non-Euclidean geometry
7. Use as a mould to create a planetary system for the school project/model for a geography class
8. Kick the barrel containing cricket balls to trip the oncoming pirates on the ship
9. To plug a sinkhole after escaping from pirates on the dinghy which got poked with an iron rod
10. Use as a logo to replace every tittle
11. Use it in a broken abacus
12. Use as a pendulum with seam string and weight
