Tri-Nation Tournament in Bangladesh, 5th Match: India v Sri Lanka at Dhaka, Jan 10, 2010
India won by 8 wickets (with 104 balls remaining)
Played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur (neutral venue)
10 January 2010 - day/night match (50-over match)

14.00 The Sri Lankan openers walk out. Tharanga will face Tyagi. Dilshan hugs his IPL team-mate Mishra at the other end. One slip in place.

13.30 Sangakkara spins, Dhoni calls and its a tails so Sangakkara opts to bat first. He wants to win here and stay unbeaten going into the final. Sri Lanka are fielding their strongest side, with Dilshan back at the top and Jayawardene dropping back to the middle order. India have a few changes. Weledegara returns for Malinga. Sehwag is rested, in comes Karthik. Harbhajan is also rested for Mishra. Tyagi is in for Nehra.

Sangakkara's decision to bat seemed to go down just fine with Dhoni. Most captains have preferred to field but perhaps Sangakkara wants to see what his team can do if they have to bat first in the final. The dew has been a big factor in the series.

Bangladesh are not playing so there are hardly and spectators in.

While we wait to start, check out this nifty stats review of the past decade by Cricinfo's Siddhartha Talya.

13.20 Hello and welcome to the 21st match between India and Sri Lanka in less than 19 months. I'm Jamie Alter, and handling the scoring part of this gig will be Sanjay Murari.

The last time I did the ball-by-ball commentary, these two teams were playing an ODI - in fact, much of my 2009 was spent covering these two teams - so excuse me for a second if I feel faint with a heavy sense of déjà vu. Seems like 2009 all over again for me.

But today promises to be a good game, what with India hoping to make it to the finals today itself rather than leave it to their next game against Bangladesh. The toss is up in 10 minutes so don't stray too far.

0.1

Tyagi to Tharanga, no run, gentle starter, pitched up on leg stump, Tharanga defends

0.4

Tyagi to Tharanga, OUT, edged and taken! Tyagi sends down the same delivery that angles across the stumps but instead of leaving it Tharanga goes for a drive without much footwork and edges straight into first slip's lap

WU Tharanga c Karthik b Tyagi 0 (3m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

A hard-hit shot without footwork and that did for the in-form Tharanga. A loose drive, edged to Karthik who made no mistake. Catching practice. Tyagi was given the new ball in his second game and makes a mark. In walks Sangakkara.

0.5

Tyagi to Sangakkara, no run, leans into a wide half-volley and square-drives nicely but Kohli intercepts at point with a dive

0.6

Tyagi to Sangakkara, no run, angles across Sangakkara who lets it go

Very nice opening over from the rookie. Sri Lanka in a bit of pressure early.

And here's Sreesanth from the over the stumps ...

1.1

Sreesanth to Dilshan, FOUR, and here's Dilshan striking his first ball on return, a length ball outside off, between the covers

1.2

Sreesanth to Dilshan, no run, change of length, Sree holds it back and Dilshan lets it go

1.3

Sreesanth to Dilshan, FOUR, fuller and straighter and with minimal adjustment to clear the front leg, Dilshan punches the ball back on the volley wide of Sreesanth and mid-off can't stop it

1.4

Sreesanth to Dilshan, no run, now that is the length to bowl, just drags it back and Dilshan leaves

1.5

Sreesanth to Dilshan, no run, 134ks, hits a good length and wobbles away off the seam from just outside off stump and Dilshan, itching to clobber off the front foot, lets it go again

2.4

Tyagi to Dilshan, no run, ooh lucky to get away with that! Short and wide and slapped nicely but straight to Jadeja at backward point

2.5

Tyagi to Dilshan, FOUR, slapped! Pitches back of a length outside off and without much footwork Dilshan flays that between cover and point, on the rise, for four more, what a shot

Four men on the off side ...

2.6

Tyagi to Dilshan, no run, 136ks, back of a length on the stumps, played to cover

End of over 3 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 17/1 (RR: 5.66)

3.1

Sreesanth to Sangakkara, no run, pitches it up outside off, no movement, Sanga shoulders arms

3.2

Sreesanth to Sangakkara, FOUR, good shot, just stands there and biffs a fractionally fuller ball wide of the man at short cover, was in the air marginally but was hit very hard

3.3

Sreesanth to Sangakkara, FOUR, short, wide and slashed up and over backward point for four, third man had no chance to get around and stop that brute of a shot from Sangakkara

3.4

Sreesanth to Sangakkara, no run, fuller, which means on a good length after that last ball, 134ks, gets some cuts off the deck with the angle and Sangakkara decides to leave that one be

3.5

Sreesanth to Sangakkara, no run, tidier ball, on a length on off stump and makes him drive it back

Two men catching short in the covers .. a packed off-side field ...

    • TM Dilshan 16 (10b 4x4)
    • S Sreesanth 2-0-16-0
    • S Tyagi 2-1-9-1
4.1

Tyagi to Dilshan, FOUR, played late! Short of a length outside off, Dilshan steers the ball between backward point and first slip and with no third man in place that is four, so smart

4.2

Tyagi to Dilshan, FOUR, and again, four more! Dilshan is toying here as first slip is removed, he just angles the bat and runs the ball off the face past where the catcher just was

4.3

Tyagi to Dilshan, FOUR, oh ho ho! What fun to watch! Tyagi opts to go fuller and watches in agony as Dilshan drives hard and picks the gap between two men in the covers

4.4

Tyagi to Dilshan, 1 run, now he drags in a short ball on the stumps which is pulled to deep square

4.5

Tyagi to Sangakkara, no run, hits a length, 138ks, gets some shape from middle and leg and Sangakkara defends it back watchfully

4.6

Back to Dilshan. He's enjoying himself so far this sleepy Sunday. And Dhoni brings in Zaheer.

5.1

Khan to Dilshan, no run, beaten first ball as he opens the face and looks to run a wide ball down for four, but the ball wobbles away and beats the bat on the angle

Remember, there is no third man in place ... but a fly slip comes in

5.2

Khan to Dilshan, FOUR, short ball and Dilshan pulls into the yawning gap at midwicket

5.3

Khan to Dilshan, OUT, good catch! Zaheer again angles it across at short of a length, Dilshan sees room and tries to get four to the vacant third man but doesn't play the ball down enough and Gambhir at that fly slip takes a smart catch low to the ground, just the effort needed to stop Dilshan

TM Dilshan c Gambhir b Khan 33 (26m 17b 8x4 0x6) SR: 194.11

So another manic innings ends in a blur. He was looking good, Dilshan, but has to go. Gambhir took a nice catch as the ball died on him. Here's Jayawardene at No. 4.

5.4

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, full ball outside leg, turned straight to the fielder

5.5

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, beaten! Zaheer aims more for middle and off and gets the fuller ball to move late and beat the bat as Jayawardene pushes down the wrong line

5.6

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, pitches leg and shapes across and he has to defend, good ball

So Zaheer does the job early on.

Tyagi to Jayawardene, no run, digs it in short, the ball jags back in from outside off, but Mahela has his off stump covered as he leaves the ball alone. It passes over the stumps anyway

6.3

Tyagi to Jayawardene, no run, dis it in short again, into the hips this time, defended towards midwicket

6.4

Tyagi to Jayawardene, 1 run, provides him the width this time, and is cut away towards third man

6.5

Tyagi to Sangakkara, no run, stays back of a length, Sanga looks to cut but there isn't much room and ends up hitting towards cover

6.6

Tyagi to Sangakkara, FOUR, the change-up delivery, too full, on the pads, and the gift voucher is encashed through a flick to square leg

End of over 7 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 48/2 (RR: 6.85)

7.1

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, angled across him, Mahela comes forward and shoulders arms

7.2

Khan to Jayawardene, FOUR, strays on the pads this time, and Mahela glances it down towards fine leg, the fine leg is placed too square and can't get around

7.3

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, goes back to outside off, and Jaya leaves it alone

7.4

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, closer to the stumps, he has to play at it, which he does with an open face, towards point

7.5

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, looks to tuck him up, short of a length, around middle, defended to leg

7.6

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, off the splice of the bat, and a full-length dive from Raina at cover saves runs - India have fielded better today than they have in a long long time

End of over 8 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 52/2 (RR: 6.50)

8.2

Tyagi to Sangakkara, no run, a touch closer to the stumps, Sanga shoulders arms again

8.3

Tyagi to Sangakkara, no run, and again, a hat-trick of left-alones, back of a length, slightly outside off, angling away

8.4

Tyagi to Sangakkara, no run, good carry here, again pitching just outside off, just back of a length, goes as high as Dhoni's shoulders

8.5

Tyagi to Sangakkara, FOUR, this time he crashes him through point, it is a matter of slightly extra width, which frees his arms and he pounces on it

8.6

Tyagi to Sangakkara, FOUR, lovely cover-drive, another Tyagi over ends with a boundary, he pitches up this time, Sanga gets to the pitch of it, and drives it handsomely, wide of mid-off

End of over 9 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 60/2 (RR: 6.66)

    • Z Khan 2-0-8-1
9.1

Khan to Jayawardene, OUT, another catch, that's three in three for India, a welcome change from recent matches! There is a short cover placed for a drive to the ball that is not quite full, and Mahela walks into that trap. He is slightly early into the drive, checks his shot and Kohli takes a sharp catch, with hands pointing skywards

DPMD Jayawardene c Kohli b Khan 5 (16m 13b 1x4 0x6) SR: 38.46

10.1

Sreesanth to Sangakkara, 1 run, leans into a full ball and slashes in the air but safe of the catchers, third man gets into play to do the fielding

10.2

Sreesanth to Samaraweera, OUT, plumb! On the stumps, Samaraweera walks across the sticks in an attempt to flick to the leg side but is late on the shot and rapped in front, Sreesanth belts out an appeal and the umpire raises his finger, looked pretty straightforward to the naked eye

TT Samaraweera lbw b Sreesanth 0 (6m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Big wicket. That is the third time a bowler has gotten a wicket at the start of a spell today. That ball was full and straight and hitting leg stump. Few doubts there.

Sri Lanka in a mess here. The top order has come apart. India's seamers have done well. The second Powerplay was taken last over, sorry I forgot to say that.

11.2

Khan to Sangakkara, 1 run, chops a wider ball into the ground in front of cover and steals a single

11.5

Khan to Kandamby, no run, full on off stump, some shape, Kandamby drives and turns the ball to midwicket

12.6

13.4

Khan to Sangakkara, no run, walks across the sticks and on-drives a fuller ball down to mid-on

13.5

Khan to Sangakkara, OUT, madness! Zaheer bowls it short of a length on the body, Sangakkara rides the bounce and turns the ball toward Karthik at square leg and sets off, which gets Kandamby bolting down his end, but then the captain hesitates and turns back, by which time Kandamby has nearly reached him, Karthik releases the ball on the bounce to Zaheer who collects and breaks the sticks with the batsman short ... talk about being sold down the river

SHT Kandamby run out 1 (16m 11b 0x4 0x6) SR: 9.09

13.6

18.2

Mishra to Perera, OUT, good catch in the deep and what a silly shot from this kid! End of over 43 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 197/7 (RR: 4.58)

    • T Thushara 24 (42b 2x4)
    • S Randiv 49 (71b 4x4)
    • SK Raina 3-0-9-0
    • Yuvraj Singh 4-0-18-1

Dhoni calls back Zaheer as Sri Lanka opt for the batting Powerplay.

43.1

Khan to Randiv, 1 run, there's a maiden ODI half-century - in fact his first in List A matches - and he leaps up and punches the air, after he tucks a short ball off his hips to square leg, well played

Zaheer changes the angle ...

43.2

Khan to Thushara, FOUR, low full toss which Thushara drives superbly down past mid-off

43.3

Khan to Thushara, OUT, gone this time, losing his cool and taking on a short ball outside off, the result is a top edge that Yuvraj keeps his eyes on as he runs across from backward point

T Thushara c Yuvraj Singh b Khan 28 (56m 44b 3x4 0x6) SR: 63.63

Second smart catch from Yuvraj. He had some distance to cover but never took his eyes off the ball and cupped it as he tumbled down. Thushara falls in the first over of the Powerplay and India need two wickets.

43.4

Khan to Randiv, 1 run, on the stumps and driven into the off side for a quick single

43.5

Khan to Welegedara, 1 run, low full toss on the pads, clipped out to the man at deep fine

43.6

Khan to Randiv, 1 run, hops to outside leg stump and pushes the short ball into the covers, calling for the single immediately and getting it too

Zaheer finishes with a good analysis.

End of over 44 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 205/8 (RR: 4.65)

    • S Randiv 52 (74b 4x4)
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 1 (1b)
    • Z Khan 10-2-38-3
    • SK Raina 3-0-9-0

Mishra returns ... field is spread within the circle

44.1

Mishra to Randiv, FOUR, tosses it up and Randiv, with a subtle adjustment to create room, drives the ball over the infield with the turn, a totally intentional shot for four more

44.2

Mishra to Randiv, OUT, timber! Randiv cannot pick the quicker googly that skids through after pitching and slides under the cross-batted shot to hit leg stump, end of a good half-century

S Randiv b Mishra 56 (103m 76b 5x4 0x6) SR: 73.68

44.3

Mishra to Lakmal, 1 wide, slides down leg stump

44.3

Mishra to Lakmal, 1 wide, even further down the pads

44.3

Mishra to Lakmal, 1 wide, and again, Mishra just cannot control his line at the moment

44.3

Mishra to Lakmal, no run, that is better, slower legbreak outside off that turns past the bat

44.4

Mishra to Lakmal, no run, tossed up on middle and off and defended

44.5

Mishra to Lakmal, no run, loud appeal as Lakmal strides forward to a googly and gets hit on the pad, but the umpire shakes his head, perhaps uncertain by the stride forward, but well bowled

44.6

Mishra to Lakmal, no run, defends the last ball

End of over 45 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 212/9 (RR: 4.71)

    • RAS Lakmal 0 (4b)
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 1 (1b)
    • A Mishra 9-1-40-2
    • Z Khan 10-2-38-3

Jadeja gets the ball again ... one wicket remains ...

45.1

Jadeja to Welegedara, no run, onto the front foot, driving well but extra cover saves runs

45.2

Jadeja to Welegedara, 1 leg bye, down the pads, he swings and the ball brushes his legs

45.3

Jadeja to Lakmal, no run, moves about in his crease, ends up pushing the ball back

45.4

Jadeja to Lakmal, no run, slider, middle and leg, pushed to midwicket

45.5

Jadeja to Lakmal, no run, tossed up generously, he dances out and heaves but can only inside-edge the ball to midwicket

45.6

Jadeja to Lakmal, no run, tossed up and Lakmal defends to the off side to end a maiden over

End of over 46 (1 run, maiden) Sri Lanka 213/9 (RR: 4.63)

    • RAS Lakmal 0 (8b)
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 1 (3b)
    • RA Jadeja 6-1-21-0
    • A Mishra 9-1-40-2
46.1

Mishra to Welegedara, OUT, all over, as Welegedara swings across the line to a wider, slower, well tossed up delivery outside off stump and misses, and Dhoni collects and breaks the sticks

UWMBCA Welegedara st †Dhoni b Mishra 1 (9m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

17.18 Sri Lanka have been bowled out for 213 in 46.1 overs. Mishra gets his third. A very good effort from India here. Dilshan looked good but the seamers plugged away to restrict Sri Lanka to 84 for 6. A couple stands along the way got Sri Lanka this far, with Sangakkara and Randiv getting fifties, but this should not challenge even a revamped Indian line-up. Join us shortly for the chase, which will be covered by the tag team duo of Kanishkaa B and Sid T. This is Jamie Alter signing off. Bye!
