Big Picture

Triangular tournaments can be hard on the ego of the team that leaves the competition first. Unlike a bigger multi-team tournament, there is no consolatory semi-final finish, or a bronze medal. There is only a lonely last place. This series has just started, but with West Indies nine points clear of both India and Sri Lanka, that last-place tag, for now, has gravitated towards the two subcontinent sides. The familiar foes, who have played each other in five different countries in the last couple of years, both need a win in the last match of the series at Sabina Park to ensure some breathing space before the entourage moves to Port of Spain.

That these two teams know each other inside out is common knowledge. While the familiarity has worked in India's favour as their batsmen have decoded the unconventionality of Sri Lanka's attack, the same can't be said about the latter. They have repeatedly wilted against India's simple game plan - 'whatever you score, we'll do better'. The result is that when the two meet, it is almost like India's XI is up against Sri Lanka's IX, with the threat posed by Lasith Malinga and Ajantha Mendis to other teams reduced to a dud against India batsmen.

In cricket, however, most of the times, it is not a test of man-to-man strength. A special innings, an outstanding spell or even an exceptional instance of fielding is all that is required to overcome an opposition. On Friday, it was Chris Gayle who did that; on Sunday, it was Johnson Charles who blazed away. Sri Lanka have players who can do that as well - Kumar Sangakkara showed it against England in a tall chase at The Oval during the Champions Trophy - but the question is, can they do it against India?

India's juggernaut was brought to a halt on Sunday by West Indies, but only just. West Indies' bowlers set a template on how to stifle India's stroke-makers on a slow pitch, and their batsmen then rolled along comfortably as the surface eased out. In the absence of MS Dhoni, who didn't take the field after injuring his hamstring while batting, India fought hard, but were tripped by a resolute last-wicket stand. Virat Kohli, the stand-in captain, admitted the team missed Dhoni's calmness during that frantic ending.

Sri Lanka haven't been in their best form, but as West Indies proved, this young Indian side is beatable. With Dhoni ruled out of the rest of this series, the imbalance between the two sides has slightly been redressed.

In the spotlight

Virat Kohli's reputation in world cricket received a huge boost the day he hammered the Sri Lanka bowling for a breathtaking century in Hobart in February 2012 . He scored two more against Sri Lanka in his next two matches, then another one three matches later. Since then, he has gone through a lean phase against other attacks. But when India met Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy semi-final, Kohli helped himself to an unbeaten 58, dispelling any doubts about which team is his favourite opposition. In Kingston, Kohli will be burdened with captaincy, too, and it remains to be seen if he can flourish this time.

There is no doubt that Lasith Malinga has been one of the leading limited-overs bowlers in world cricket in recent times but what has been hard to fathom is why a top bowler has been unable to come up with a counter-strategy against Indian batsmen. He has ample skill, pace and variations in his armoury, but still he has failed to find the right combination that would work against the India batsmen. Players evolve during their careers but can Malinga do it?

Team news

While Ambati Rayudu was named as the replacement for Dhoni, the only reserve India batsman at the moment in the Caribbean is M Vijay, the opener. If he is included, the batting order will need a careful rejig. It is hard to see the team disturbing Rohit Sharma or Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order.

India (probable) 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 M Vijay, 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Umesh Yadav

Sri Lanka's move to open with Mahela Jayawardene and Upul Tharanga paid dividends, but the rest of their batting slowed the innings down on Friday. But they do not have much room to wiggle in their batting order. However, one move they might consider given the slow nature of the Kingston pitch could be to include Sachithra Senanayake.

Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Mahela Jayawardene, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt), 6 Lahiru Thirimanne, 7 & 8 two of Ajantha Mendis/Sachithra Senanayake/Jeevan Mendis, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Lasith Malinga

Pitch and conditions

The conditions at Sabina Park have meant batsmen have struggled for fluency in the first half of the match and they are likely to stay the same. It is a slow pitch with some lateral movement early on, but it eases out during the second half. Just like West Indies did both times, the team that wins the toss will prefer to field.

Stats and trivia

  • India and Sri Lanka have played 41 ODIs against each other in the last five years - that is 15 more than the next most-prolific match-up of Bangladesh-Zimbabwe. Overall, the two teams have met each other 140 times in ODIs, also a record. Australia-West Indies have played against each other 135 times.
  • It's not a surprise then that three Sri Lankans and four Indians have scored more than 1000 runs in such contests in the last five years, the top-seven batting efforts against a particular team. Shane Watson, with 930 runs against England, is the eighth batsman in this list.
  • The India and Sri Lanka bowlers haven't done quite as well as their batting counterparts. It's understandable since most of these matches are played on flat wickets. For wickets taken against a particular opposition in the last five years, three Sri Lanka bowlers are in the top 10 for doing it against India. Lasith Malinga is there, too, but the opposition in his case is Australia. Only one India bowler - Zaheer Khan v Sri Lanka - makes it to the list.

Winning this trophy is more important as the conditions in WI are more hostile for batsmen. So I rate this tournament much higher than other tournaments.....

Posted by Memphian on (July 2, 2013, 13:47 GMT)

I seriously hope India wins the toss and bats first. This is the only way you can be sure that you are put in tough situations and learn from it. So, India should take batting first and use it to learn and adapt to the situations. Then future will be all yours to grab :-)

Posted by Otuwa on (July 2, 2013, 13:39 GMT)

@IndianCoolGuy- Yes Dilshan,Sanga,Mahela play huge roll in the SLan team. Why do you talk WITHOUT THEM.They are still 35 years old. They can play another 2,3 years in the team.40 years old players still playing cricket in your team.So 35 years old is not a bad age to play cricket.

After enough chances are given to Kohli (who is not a captaincy material for sure) then I think Ashwin can be tried who has dravid like personality. The other serios candidate is Jadeja who will soon overtake Kohli as he is an allrounder and has ability to score runs as good as Kohli. In my opinion we have another Jayasuria in making and jadeja's attitude is attacking with grace which will come further alive while captaining. Trying others will be waste of time. But captain cool, tha mahil is the best.

i agree indian team is doing well generally in world cricket but i find it hard to ignore consistent omission of amit mishra from playing 11 ...he is a good lad with grt attitude towards the game ....i want to see him bowl in few ODI's in place of ashwin ..... let him prove his worth too in the team.

@ Surajrises wake up buddy! Dilshan is out of the series due to a calf injury.

kohli is an agressive player.let's see how much he keeps cool during the nail biting moments.

Well atleast now SL have a slight chance to win because now even Indian team is bit weak and very young and experienced. As far as talent gap goes..SL are still at disadvantage

Posted by swarzi on (July 2, 2013, 13:19 GMT)

You see the exact point that I am trying to make? The best cricket captain in the world took his team to battle against the rest of the world, and did not only WiN EVERY BATTLE he fought, but WON THE WAR also. Then before he is allowed to lead his army home to celebrate their victory WITH THE WHOLE NATION, he and his men are sent off to fight a less important war, and now, the real deal is that he is INJURED in the first battle of that less important war and has to return home, without his victorious troops that won the ALL IMPORTANT WAR! How unfair! I think it's time for the international cricket administrators to show some human concern for our cricketers and cricket! We are having too much of a case where all the administrators are trying to make quick cash and at the same time killing the cricketers and cricket! On the point of Dhoni's replacement, I think it should have been Sanju Samson, the 18 year old superstar, who is both a batsman of immense class and a wicketkeeper.

Posted by Surajrises on (July 2, 2013, 13:12 GMT)

Some of you are really underestimating Sri Lanka. They are totally unpredictable. If Dilshan and Sanga fire today, we are finished so dnt underestimate anyone...

Posted by wolf777 on (July 2, 2013, 13:10 GMT)

Kohli will be better captain than Dhoni. Dhoni has long past his use by date. At least, Kholi will give players like Pujara a chance instead of keep giving chances to people like Rohit Shrama despite repeated failures. Finally Rohit Sharma scored some runs -credit goes to Sammy in the last game- …big deal. How many chances he got and how many careers were ruined? For Dhoni, Rohit Sharma is more equal than others…..all for giving people chances; but, not for favoritism.

Posted by JPrats on (July 2, 2013, 12:56 GMT)

@ CRLShamalka good on ya mate. You seem to be very good at reading fate line of somebody's palm and predicting their luck. But we are talking in technical terms with empirical evidence supporting the arguement. You seem to have lost the idea here. It is perhaps easy to find a replacement batsmen, bowler or wicket keeper. But there is a lot of difference between that and the need to replace a captain of a team. You probably can see that from your SL team's performance - they have got world class players if you count them individually but it needs a person who can tailor it to the need of the hour as Sanga did in the WC 2011. While Angelo Mathews is in the making it probably would be a while until the team gets into that phase. Team India did undergo that phase time and time again until they found a few along the likes of Saurav and Dhoni. Probably now you understand the technicality of losing a captain than a player.

Posted by   on (July 2, 2013, 12:41 GMT)

Without MSD, this is gonna be a tough match for India because Kohli loses his cool very easily and stars abusing his own team mates. But the question is that if not Kohli then who is good to lead that team? Raina? No and all others in that team really dnt have the capacity to lead this team. Can't even consider Rohit Sharma's MI Captaincy because it was T20 and it really doesn't matter...

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (July 2, 2013, 12:34 GMT)

@mark2011: You better read my comments once again, I was mentioning as " India does not even need Dhoni to win against SL". and I also mentioned as " Dhoni is a player who cannot be replaced by any player in the world at the moment. India missing Dhoni is a very big blow." So to win against SL, I don't think we need Dhoni's help because now SL in such a bad shape. and every one knows how important Dhoni is for the team.

You have mentioned as without Dhoni, India looks very ordinary, and that is not correct. Only because of Dhoni's captaincy India is winning is not a justified comments of you. I can say when India has Dhoni, India wins 8 out of 10, but without Dhoni, India can win 6 to 7 out of 10.

mishra should replace ms if not today, he should be given a chance against W.I

Posted by   on (July 2, 2013, 12:22 GMT)

IND has to play without Dhoni & has no alternatives other than Kohli to take over him. Who is better Rohit, Kohli, Raina or Ashwin? This is useless to discuss now. Yuvraj, Gambhir & Sehwag are not in Midas Touch so that they can be selected. They were struggling badly in recently concluded IPL and we had seen. Rayadu had been replaced but will certain to miss today. Vijay is only option and will play at open. Now Dhoni's absence means loss of combination of anchor plus slogger. If IND bat first, they have to preserve 4,5,6 positions for best batters. Top 3 include Dhawan, Vijay & Kartik. Dhawan should play aggressive as others should play till middle of innings. Pitch became easier after 30 overs so better to keep Kohli at 4 followed by Rohit & Raina. Amit mishra can't be part though he is better bowler but because of his worst fielding skill that makes par. It is difficult to remove thoughts in Ishant's mind that his strength is bounce. If he continue to do so, better to play Shami.

Posted by AltafPatel on (July 2, 2013, 12:05 GMT)

Too early to pressurize Kohli for captaincy role. He should be considered as captain in charge, particularly when he is at his best with 13 hundreds in less than 100 matches (90).

Posted by binu.emiliya on (July 2, 2013, 12:00 GMT)

I noticed one thing.....In this tournament three team is having a common name..and funny thing is that three are Wicket keepers....Dinesh Chandimal(SL),Dinesh Kaarthik(Ind),Dinesh Ramdin (WI)...

Rayudu is as talented as Dhawan, Rohit or Kohli. He was sielined due to dirty poiltics of Shivlal Yadav just because Rayudu once had disagreement with his son who he wanted to promote despite lack of talent. Check out Gavaskars and shastris comments about Rayudus talent when he was 19 odd years old. Very fact that Sachin selected him personally for MI is a pointer. If he gets a decent run he can be as good as any player in Indian team.

@brusselslion

Ideally any test playing nation should have schedule 12 test matches, 15 ODI (max) & 5 T-20s (max) per year. But IND plays average 10 test matches, 30+ ODI. In addition to that IPL consumes nearly 60 days. It means that IND plays 150 days of cricket per year. This figure does not include champion league. Rotation policy can't be option. After all there is healthy competition among players & players won't skip those. More injuries due to playing over cricket being insecurity feel constant in players' minds. Can't blame players. It's administration issue. Cut down the volume of IPL & ODIs.

I like to see 1. kusal 2. chandimal 3. thirimanne/mathews 4. sanga 5. mathews/ thirimanne 6. mahela 7. tharanga/ mendis 8. thisara/lokuhettige 9. kulasekara 10. senanayake 11. malimga this is the batting order most of my friends expect to hv too. but wat we know aboit cricket...*sigh*

Posted by   on (July 2, 2013, 11:38 GMT)

its sad to know that Rayudu will replace the dhoni, If you see rayudu batting he is comfortable against spin only and he is not a match winner. I think the management should given a chance to STUART BINNY/Simpson (WK of RRoyals), they are far more better finisher than Rayudu

Posted by mark2011 on (July 2, 2013, 11:28 GMT)

@ IndianCoolGuy on (July 2, 2013, 11:08 GMT); dhoni's absence not as a batsman, but as a captain is more affecting Indi performance...India won few matches without dhoni batting , that bcos top order is performing, and specially lesser total( below 220),but stil he had impact as a captain in the side doing the right thing for the team.. but when that is not there Ind looks prety ordinary

Posted by mark2011 on (July 2, 2013, 11:20 GMT)

@abby_cricketlover on (July 2, 2013, 10:58 GMT); if Kholi is not changing his bowlers better, its not a big matter, why people (Dhoni +management ) in the dressing room can send some message and guide him.this is not a big think now a days reserve players come to boundary ropes and give drinks/towels etc to players while playing.. so there's no obstacle to guide Kholi from playerrs rest room.

It seems that you haven't learnt after following so many comments & views by the fans of all over the world. It is a grudge over TEAM IND that put you to make any predictions of Dhoni & IND. IND lost the match against WI by narrowly 1 wicket. IND took 9 wickets of WI while bowling second where as WI lost wickets on much friendly behavioral & improved pitch. Neither it was LUCK nor it was DOMINATING as you termed in your previous posts. Every time you predict SL's win but ended in huge disappointment. The Champions make history but win & loss is a part of the game. The Champions are fighters who never surrender as they did on Sunday and also never give lame excuses. The Champs can't be going through tough phase as you mentioned. They are experimenting on different permutations & combinations but not in fixing some one's place in other team. IND can win even MS is not there. Who said we can't....Any doubt.

espncricinfo pl publish...

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (July 2, 2013, 11:08 GMT)

@ CRLShamalka : Great to hear that all your predictions are going right. So what you are going to predict for the result of India and SL? Dhoni is a player who cannot be replaced by any player in the world at the moment. India missing Dhoni is a very big blow. and it doesn't mean that India cannot win match without Dhoni. You can recollect the last 2 matches India played with SL, and check how much Dhoni involved in winning a match. In semis, Dhoni did not even get a chance to bat. India won by 8 wickets with 90 balls to spare. But if you take SL, SL is largely depended on Sanga, Mahela and sometimes Dilshan. Without these players its very tough for SL to win even against Bangladesh. So don't be excited for winning match without Dhoni. India does not even need Dhoni to win against SL, just they need to adjust their batting order.

Posted by brusselslion on (July 2, 2013, 11:06 GMT)

Since November, India's best have been involved in Test series, T20 & ODI series against Eng. & Oz; ODI/ T20 series vs. Pak., the IPL, the CT and now this 3 nation ODI series (next an ODI series vs. Zimbabwe): In the same time, England have played India & NZ (twice) in all 3 formats, the CT, the domestic CC and now have the Ashes coming up.

A couple of questions: Firstly is it any wonder that players get injured more frequently given the demands placed upon them? Secondly, surely we are reaching saturation point when it comes to the amount of cricket being played? The CT is (was) the 2nd most important ODI tournament. Other than money, what is the point of India playing this tournament and the matches against Zimambwe? (Can they really be that lucrative?).

In case anyone mistakenly thinks that I am having a go at the BCCI/ India, let me state that I have the same complete disregard for the recent Eng-NZ T20s. Utterly pointless. Someone needs to rethink the scheduling.

With Dhoni's rule out of series Replacements _ As Captain - Kohli As Wicket Keeper - Karthik As a member - Rayudu As a member in final 11 -Vijay As a finisher - ?? As Cool headed - ?? As wicket keeper bowler - ?? To give an 18th over to Ishant when rest of the world had no clue for what's going on... we can replace Dhoni by someone but not entire him.. I personally think Dhoni can only be Dhoni...

Between Kohli got the best of opportunity to tune himself into the condition of next full time captain for Bhaarat

Posted by Niketh2000 on (July 2, 2013, 11:03 GMT)

I think Kusal Perera should be given a chance, maybe he isnt entirely in form but these carribean wickets might suit his batting style a lot. He's kind of like Gayle, if he gets going, the game is destined to only have one result, a positive for SL. He shouldnt be pressurized much by leaving him out of the squad, after all anyone can have a bad tournament and thats that. If anyone should be dropped it should be either Thirimanne or Chandimal. Also, Rangana Herath might be a very good and excellent test bowler for sri lanka but i cant see him serving SL purpose in ODI's: wickets. Some other strike bowler like sachithra senanayake would be much better in my opinion for Sl. Anyway, looking forward for a great game! Good Luck both teams!

for all those saying rohit should be captaining, let him cement his place in the team for goodness sake, he has just been made to open and has scored 3 fifties, he needs to score much more to cement his spot first then can dream about captaincy

Posted by abby_cricketlover on (July 2, 2013, 10:58 GMT)

Kohli, standin capton of India, Alas!!! he had led only 20/20 tournament IPL and didnot came EVEN Last 4 ( NO Semifinal), He just know, how to attack but he dont know, how to defend, how to be creative under pressure and Win a match. In last match it self, He bowled Umesh Yadav 2 overs back to back in end and Umesh did not ball a single yorker, Dhoni's go to Bowlers are Bhuvi and Jadeja to take wickets. BUT HE did not USE them and allow 9th, 10th batsman to BAT for 4 Overs. ASHWINI IS MY CHOICE FOR STANDIN/ FUTURE CAPTAIN.

Posted by phunny_game on (July 2, 2013, 10:48 GMT)

Yes rohit is the best choice for captaining the team... and so was Gambhir last year. What do u do when uv lost ur skipper... make the guy, who has hardly done anything before the CT, your captain... he wasnt even the first choice mumbai indians skipper and was promoted due to lack of alternatives. This is a baseless argument. I would be surprised if he is made even vice captain at this stage...

Posted by Kahagalle on (July 2, 2013, 10:45 GMT)

It is time Sanga and Mahela did step down. Even if they are allowed to play they should give up their favorite positions to allow a younger team to be developed. May be Sri Lanka will hit a lean patch, but yet it is worth it. We should not burden our team with more than half the team above 30 and perhaps cut off at 35. We can now recruit enough cricketers in Sri Lanka with superb talents all over the country including Jaffna.

Posted by srinideva on (July 2, 2013, 10:43 GMT)

@GRVJPR, you and me must accept that Eng always give something for the bowlers, especially fast bowlers, the way the ENg dominated in the 2011 test series shows that the pitches in england in recent times are favouring the swing bowlers. especially J anderson get the lot of wickets there...You must also accept that the our indian team went out there and haven`t scored a 300 + runs in single innings..None of our batsman haven`t played well in that series except Dravid..So just don`t say there wsan`t no movement for fast bowlers in England.., you can get lot of movement, especially in overcast condition. I`m not try to down rohit, but he is not complete..so just wait..

Posted by phunny_game on (July 2, 2013, 10:41 GMT)

I feel kohli will curb his aggression and play like a true gentleman... he does show his aggression and lets his emotions out... but he is a 24 yr old. Now that he has been burdened with responsibility, he will come out as a more mature guy. In the last match he wasnt even prepared to lead... but now he has had 2 days to prepare, and he will enter the match knowing he is the skipper. So expect a different guy altogether. I can say that because he is a guy who takes pride in donning national colours, unlike a lot of youngsters around the world. And all the SL fans who think one match and one man could change the fortune of Indian team are wrong. It was a one off game, and its sad to lose dhoni, but we r still no.1 and have enough talent to maintain that ranking.

Posted by gtr800 on (July 2, 2013, 10:40 GMT)

Sri Lanka is still a terrible side at the moment- with or without Dhoni they cannot win. Their fielding has been consistently poor throughout the CT & in the first match. Their bowling well the only possible threat is Malinga whose record against India is very much below his average standards. I just don't see India losing this match, Virat might not be great under pressure but its highly unlikely SL will create any sort of pressure. Plus, India will be vary of the fact that Dhoni's not in the side & will try and negate that risk by playing with more responsibility.

Posted by   on (July 2, 2013, 10:38 GMT)

It will be very difficult for the team to fit m.vijay In place of dhoni...at what position he would bat will be the main question. Apart from that, kohli's captaincy is far much aggressive then that of dhoni. With dhoni captaining tha side, Indian team look totally different. Thats why psychologically sri lankan team will feel better facing india without dhoni. Also india will not want to disturb in-form opening stand of Dhawan-rohit. Lets see the cracker of a contest today with a different captaining strategy of Kohli ! Good Luck India ! Cheers !

Posted by Krishnaraj1983 on (July 2, 2013, 10:38 GMT)

Why is Manoj Tiwari not picked..poor guy was warming the bench and when he did get a chance hit a century and fifty in his last 2 odi...he is a magnificient fielder and he should have been the replacement for dhoni to play in the middle order..unfortunate..

VK is not the right captain for Ind.. Rohit is ....

Posted by MelbourneMiracle on (July 2, 2013, 10:10 GMT)

@sachinisawesome: My dear Indian friend, I asked to mark my words only after India won the CT that Dhoni is running out of his luck. I was brave enough to predict such way even after India won the CT feeling what is going to happen to them in the tri-series? Didn't it happen in the 1st match itself? India lost to WI and even they lost their captain due to an injury. Dhoni is ruled out for the entire series. I predicted this even before India flown to WI.So it happened as I predicted in the v.1st match in the series. Sound scary isn't it? Never in the history has champions have fallen in the immediate game after the crowning game but it has happened to India yet you guys are still white washing your team and trying to fix Sammy's place in WI team without dwelling on the tough phase your Indian team is going through. SL has nothing to lose. But India are the winners of the CT. And now you guys say you can't win a match without Dhoni. What a shame!

Posted by Otuwa on (July 2, 2013, 10:02 GMT)

Dinesh Chandimal rejected the IPL for increase his technique. But i can't see any develop of his batting technique.Atleast he didn't increase his physical strength.Still he is one of the weakest fielders in the SLan team.Yes he is a WK.But Kusal is better WK than him.So Chandi has to develop his fielding skills. It's sad to see young players field poorly.

We have seen Thiri played some good ODI innings for last year. But now he is totally different player. He takes a lot of time to score first ten runs. Also team managment use him as a num6 batsman. What a shame.

Posted by GRVJPR on (July 2, 2013, 9:59 GMT)

@srinideva You sound as if the ball swings a mile in England. It doesn't my friend. Its just a media hype. I have seen Anil Kumble, Ajit Agarkar get big test hundreds out there (with bat). Some of my Indian friends tend to over hype foreign conditions and wickets. In fact there is no danger of ball stopping and keep low as in India. Hence they are always better wickets to bat on.

Posted by GRVJPR on (July 2, 2013, 9:55 GMT)

@ Thilina Sasanka Who says that calmeness is the only way to handle pressure situation. WIth dhoni you won't realize that he has played his tricks. With kohli you will know he is agressive. Both types of captains have been successful if you look at history. Ponting was ultra agressive and expressive. Now don't say he wasn't successful!

Posted by sachinisawesome on (July 2, 2013, 9:45 GMT)

@ CRLShamalka You asked everybody to mark your words during CT as well and then match after match u gave excuses why India won and Sri lanka lost and said "MARK MY WORDS" next time Sri Lanka will win. This is the reason I believe Sri Lanka is not improving becos they just start thinking about excuses before the match starts . Al I can say is please begin to accept the defeat and move and MARK MY WORDS Sri Lanka will also start winning.

Posted by   on (July 2, 2013, 9:42 GMT)

@srinideva

All I can say you really need a certain break. This is not an IPL. This is Tri-nation series. Every teams in the IPL are the star studded. Both CSK & MI deserved to be best teams. The former lost and hence the later won the IPL. Let put it behind.

It is Dhoni who ensured Rohit in the team. No one can't replace a captain like Dhoni. Mind it that every player in TEAM IND deserve to be there. Loss of MS will have certain impact on IND. But show must go on............

SL Best XI: 1.Kusal 2.Upul 3.Sanga 4.Mathews 5.Mahela 6. Chandimal 7.Jeewan 8.Kulasekara 9.Sachithra 10.Malinga 11.Ajantha Enough of seeing Mathews is coming too down the order and not having enough time to contribute. He should come 2 down. Thisara would have been a better choice than Chandimal if he was available for the selection. Chandimal is like just another passenger. He refrained playing from IPL to develop his batting abilities and I really don't know which shot that he has improved. I simply include him in the teeam instead of Thirimanne since we already have too many left handers in Kusal,Upul,Sanga and Jeewan. Since Bhuvi and Ashwin are good bowlers against left handers we better play Chandimal instead of Thirimanne. SL is surely going to win this match and I wish all the v.best to our lions!

@samp1988,westindies r in extreme west of the planet & hence any day/night game means time clock shift for the braodcasters, as it would be next day in major part of d world.

In my opinion, Upul Tharanga is a really talented, even more unluckier cricketer. He scored around six centuries during the first year when he came to odis. Then he gradually lost his form and Dilshan started to dominate the opening slot in SL squad. Now Dilshan is almost 37 and my gut feeling says he's not going to make the 2015 WC. If so SL needs to find a solid opening pare immediately. For the moment, Upul and Kusal is the best combination since it consists of both aggression and defense. What selectors could do is to give these two a consistent go at least 10-15 matches and evaluate the performances. This is the method that Arjuna followed to create the most destructive opening pair in cricket history - Kalu and Sana. On the other hand SL have a chance to do this during this tri series and the coming SA series. Wish both Upul and Kusal to be 'THE LONG TERM OPENING PAIR' for SL.

SL need to change their approach to batting and bowlling. specially in batting they shud not start slow down the pace of the game just bcos of early wickets.this test match style batting they have been following last 5-6 years, specially after Jaya's retirement, have not done good.its a negetive approach and you dig urself into a big hole and fall apart later on wen runs are need to score. Its pathetic to see a team that changed world cricket sply ODI has forgeten their own strategy.it may not be able to do as in past still we need to be aggresive and attacking unit. Mathew needs to bat up in the order. what's point he just coming after# 5 or 6 and merely post 50 runs for his own sake.. not for team. thats what happnd in last few matches. he scored 50s but what the results? loosing. he was a match winner/finisher.. but we dont see it now from him. the Ind batting has become so strong bcos all top 7 r attacking batsmen & they r not trying to play test inning in an 50 over game.

If SL bat first, IND will definitely beat SL. If IND bat first, SL may have the chance to beat IND though unlikely. But if SL loose against IND after chasing, then there will be serious problem for them. Their moral will be as low as never before. SL may never recover from this defeat. There is nothing to loose for IND as they are in developing the team for the future. Hence don't make any predictions. It is not easy to get over the things like LUCK, TOSS. It is nightmare for you but you need to forget this for the sake of good future of TEAM SL.

Posted by srinideva on (July 2, 2013, 8:39 GMT)

It is really funny to see that people say Rohit is a captain material..Give me break...He does nothing in IPL, he has the star studed team and in final everyone know CSK deserve that better than MI..Due to the off field issue the team lost...First, he must ensure his batting place in the team...Someone saying he is survived in england, keep in mind guys, pitches prepared for CT13 are not usual pitchs in england..Moreover the ball changes also have a part in it (no swing for early part of the inns...) So what i am trying to say is don`t go over the moon, let him do his job now...you must remember you can`t replace a captain like dhoni, he is not just cool under pressure, he know the each and everything about cricket and the player abilities...Just cool captain won`t win you matches example Misbah...Dhoni is special...he always..thank u

Now Sri Lanka has to start for YOUNG blood, keeping in mind for WC '15. Sri Lanka is having too many youngsters having very good talent. Now on-words sufficient chances has to be given young talented bunch.Required players like Jayasuri,Arjuna Ranatunga, A Disilva.... Sri Lanka must look in place of Mahela, Sanga, Malinga, Herath..... including effective coaches like Buchnan, Kirstan... for Wrold Cup 015 .... All the best Sri-Lanka.

Posted by paps123 on (July 2, 2013, 8:05 GMT)

SL needs to attack with the bat and be defensive with the ball. The formula that worked so well for them against IND in the 90's. They try to get IND batsman out and bowl lousy deliveries resulting in giving fast starts to IND. If they stick to this simple plan, they might just surprise IND, although unlikely.

This will be a real test for Virat Kohli. His first international match as the captain. I think M Vijay and S Dhawan should open and Rohit Sharma at No.6. This team will be a little lonely without Dhoni but we still have Dhawan, Raina, Sir Jadeja, Kumar, Ashwin, and captain Kohli. But I Sharma should be given a break as he is not bowling a good line and length and S Ahmed should be given a chance. This team could rock any team in this world. Team- M Vijay, S Dhawan, V Kohli, S Raina, D Karthik, R Sharma,R Jadeja, R Ashwin, B Kumar, S Ahmed, U Yadav.

@Anand Palwankar, I completely agree with your idea. Rohit Sharma is a very good captain because he handles situations with calmness. And btw, Irfan Pathan is injured and therefore cant play the series.

As usual we are on the back foot against India. I not understand why so many SL fans not want tharanga?he is a class batsmen and he has one well for SL in the past? My team & batting order 1. Kushal 2. Tharanga 3. Sanga 4. Chandimal 5. Mahela 6. Angelo 7. Thirrimanne 8. Jeevan 9. Kula 10. Senanayake 11. Malinga With his line up we have three fast/medium with angie, two spinners and batting to 9. Good luck Sri Lanka, win or lose, PLEASE show a bit of fight...

So much bias against Vijay is unreal. Ambati Rayudu has done nothing at the international stage whereas Vijay has 3 test centuries. Test centuries are more valuable than a T20 slogathon.

Vijay has played 11 ODI's, where as Rohit Sharma has played 80 ODI's and still people persisted with him. Give me a break

[1]Kusal[2]Mahela[3]Sanga[4]Chandi/Thiri[5]Mathews[6]Jeevan[7]Loku[8]Kula[9]Sachi[10]Mendis[11]Malinga

[4]Don't use both Chandi and Thiri. We can use both of them after Mahela and Sanga's retirement.

[7]We need a big hitter for lower middle order.

[9][10]Both of them off spinners. But they have lot of variations. So it's not matter. Also we have Jeeven as a leggy.

4 specialist batsmen,4 seamers,3spinners.

Any suggestions?????

Posted by Cameronburt96 on (July 2, 2013, 7:01 GMT)

India should open with vijay and dhawan, don't see vijay as a middle order player, rohit at 4 is more suitable

Posted by tdslbuwa on (July 2, 2013, 6:56 GMT)

Current SL team is full of slow accumulators..we cannot afford Upul Tharanga at the top of the order simply because we got Thirimanne at middle order..These two are such slow players and can really suck the momentum out of an innings...I really cant understand why selectors always give chances to Thirimanne in odi team...he is a good test batsmen not odi material...he has a very poor list A stats as well...consistent batsmen like Angelo Perera never get a chance in odi and t20 teams..players like him are the ideal batsmen at no 4,5,6...i mean his S\R in list a is over 100 and he is very young as well...my team for today's game according to this squad...Kushal need more chances...because of his god gifted talent, open with Chandimal(if you play Thiri in middle order Chandi should open and mahela and Sanga has to move down the order)....Kushal,Chandi,Thiri,Sanga,Mahela,Mathews,J.Mendis,Kula,Sachi,Mali,A.Mendis...

Posted by VVSR92 on (July 2, 2013, 6:30 GMT)

Ind can go 4 3spinners in mishra & drop a pacer . clearly the wickets are slow and this is the 3rd match on the same ground . If a need for 3rd seamer arrives virat can chip in with a few .

Posted by android_user on (July 2, 2013, 6:24 GMT)

for this match I would like to see some difference in SL batting order. If we planning 2015 wc, young players need to give more opportunity to play more cricket and more responsibility. this line up migjt not work straight away. but this will make everyone think again about their tactics. 1. kusal 2. chandimal 3. thirimanna/ mathews 4. Sanga 5. mathews/thirimanne 6. mahela 7. tharanga 8.thisara/ lokuhettige 9. kulasekara 10. senanayake/ herath 11. malinga with the squad SL hv this is the batting order I like to see, but players can be change according to pitch condition.

Posted by bravetigersmustwin on (July 2, 2013, 6:20 GMT)

Irfan pathan can come in place of Dhoni, since we have a wicket keeper already Dinesh Karthick. Pathan is still good batmen and can bowl really good in the middle overs. I dont know why Pathan doesnt gets chance although he deserves a place in indian team.

Agreed with @cricpanther. A bold decision should have been taken. Rohit Sharma ! Just observe him last six months. As he has been given some extra responcible work for team he responded verywell. In Jan at Mohali on swinging track he was introduced as opener he scored 85 matchwinning knock. Then Rohit was made Capatain of MI. Sachin played under Rohits leadership. And Rohit took his performance at sky level. He scored highest runs in all IPL tournaments, over 500ं runs. He showed extraordinary qualities of leadership. In final remember he gave opening over to Malinga. Made a trap for Raina. In that first over only MI won the match. Then Dhoni took bold decision asking him to open in English condition. We all got the positive result. Here after Dhoni, Rohit should have been given leadership. Virat is very important batsman for India. No point in giving extra load to him. We saw some anxious moments in IPL of Captain Virat for RCB. Rohit is comparitively cool leader. All the best India !

Posted by ThilankaK on (July 2, 2013, 5:59 GMT)

SL selectors have to consider Chaturanga De silva in to the team ! left arm bowler with good variation with good econ , good ave , with good pace & bounce & hard hitting CONSISTENT batsman !!!

Posted by ThilankaK on (July 2, 2013, 5:55 GMT)

Team should be :- 1 Kusal , 2 Tharanga, 3 Sangakkara (wk), 4 Jayawardene 5 Chandimal, 6 Mathews (capt), 7 Jeevan , 8 Kulasekara , 9 Senanayake , 10 Eranga , 11 Malinga

Please don't put Thirimanne in, If he will get 50 he will waste 90 balls, NO POINT WITH INDIA

WE HAVE GET 340 TO WIN THE MATCH

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (July 2, 2013, 5:39 GMT)

Why these matches were not played as a dat-night match... Morning start ,damp pitch bowling first win .. How rubbish Instead in day-nighters their will be almost same conditions for both d teams... Moreover watching d match 3:30 am in the morning in india is rediculous..

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (July 2, 2013, 5:34 GMT)

Its simple and pathatic scenario... Win tha toss and win the match..

Posted by sents2013 on (July 2, 2013, 5:32 GMT)

West Indies pitches will assist spinners. We need proper spinners like Amit Mishra who can turn the ball well. Pick him and Murali Vijay and drop a fast bowler. We need two bowlers to turn the ball unlike Jadeja who is only accurate.

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (July 2, 2013, 5:29 GMT)

Vijay should open with Dhawan. Rohit should play in the middle order.

Posted by cricpanther on (July 2, 2013, 5:22 GMT)

Not make sense, why is the next choice is Virat? Look how he has done it in IPL for Bangalore!! Because of him, cost India lost last odi!! He has no plan and dont know how to use, when to use his bowlers. He finishes ashvin and jadeja's over earlier. If ashvin's over at last could be diff result, he would sure, make out last pair!! He is panicing himself and others, so he could not be the next captain, even in the absent of Dhoni!! There are choices, like Suresh Raina, well matured and great captaincy material, so as Rohit, he makes MI to win IPL!! Last time, Raina lead and India won that series!! Make Raina or Rohit..both gel good with players and team......but NO Kohli!!!!

Posted by   on (July 2, 2013, 5:16 GMT)

The match hasn't even started yet and already there's a tricky scenario for Kohli. India is already playing 5 bowlers in the team, so its unlikely a 6th bowler will be included in place of a batsman. And the only batsman in reserve right now is Murli Vijay (since rayudu hasn't gone through training sessions in west indies, team management will not choose him for today's match) who's in the squad as an opener. But the success achieved by Dhawan n Sharma, probability of disturbing this opening combination becomes very less. So where does Murli fits in? In the middle order?

Imagine!! Middle order batsman playing as an opener and opener playing as middle order batsman in a same match expecting both to perform well.

Its easier said than done, but we never know!! so lets Wait and Watch.

MS out due to injury.....Should have been rested for this series. IND without MS.....Big difference on the field.....I mean handling pressure & management of 10 on the field while bowl.....Kohli....Too young to compare....Obviously most talented but much contrast to MS....Much aggressive but exactly opposite to cool....Hot temper..Tough test of captaincy after IND winning high in these days...

Ambati Raidu replacement for MS.....Will definitely miss 1 match.....Another good decision by Selectors....Will he get in final eleven...much depend on today's match.

MS out.....Team combination changed dramatically.....Winning combination disturbed.....Vijay only option for batsman....Who will bat at 6....Vijay takes opening slot....Opening combination (winning) changed....Rohit has to play at 5 or 6...Raina make at 6 if Rohit bats at 5....Big task to win after loosing TOSS...early pitch condition make both SL-IND equal if IND bat first

BCCI....More injuries to players....Cut short IPL

Posted by hamza_shaikh on (July 2, 2013, 4:45 GMT)

India got a Spritful Captain...India 11 probable

1.Dhawan 2.Rohit 3.Vijay r Rayudu 4.Virat 5.Karthik 6.Raina 7.jadeja 8.Ashwin 9.Bhuvi 10.Shami 11.Umesh....Ishant Struggling there last year shami bowled its best bowling figure...he must get a chance...

As for todays match.. Amit Mishra would be my pick to replace Dhoni... instead of Vijay. Clearly because on current form (taking IPL into coonsideration) Mishra bats much better than Vijay... :)

India Team dhawan, sharma, kohli,Dk,Raina, Rayadu, Jaddu, ashwin, bhvi, ishanth, umesh. Vijay got lot of chance and he never get use of them waste of a selection for this series Rayadu should choose ahead of Vijay(Against WI Match)

I believe Tharanga should open with Kusal. Sanga in 1 down. Thirimanna / Chandimal 2 down Mahela 3 down Matthews / Jeewan 4 down & 5 down depending on the situation ......................... Bowlers : Lasith, Kulasekara, Jeewan, Sachithra, Matthews, Eranga (assuming he's in the squad)

since dhoni is ruled out, this series will now give us a glimpse of how india will be post dhoni era...without dhoni , there will be no guarantee stamp at the back end of the innings...even so this will a golden opportunity for rayudu who has been at the entrance of the selection door for the past 7 years...hope he gets a game today....

Posted by Narbavi on (July 2, 2013, 3:54 GMT)

I don't know how some people talk about how Rayudu should be playing ahead of Vijay, Rayudu would be in a plane as we speak now, he will probably land a couple of hours before the game and you expect the team management to play someone who has been travelling for so many hours?

Posted by Sidath346 on (July 2, 2013, 3:49 GMT)

Looking at both teams India definitely looks the stronger unit and seem to be the favourites in this game. Also, India's youngsters perform superbly on a more consistent basis compared to our youngsters with the exception of Mathews. You hardly see Tharanga, Thirimanne, Ajantha and Jeevan Mendis and Chandimal performing well. Much of Kusal is yet to be seen. How I see is that SL cricket could be in quite a mess when the big three retire from SL cricket unless the young brigade start taking responsibility and step up a few notches. Anyway, good luck to both teams and may the better team win.

Now all of a sudden there's an uncertainty built up among Indians about their chances in the rest of the series. What a shame! So I presume that Indian cricket is a one man show of Dhoni's...Btw it was Dhawan, Rohit, Ashwin, Jadeja and Bhuvi who did a major part in winning the CT and these guys are still fit and playing in the remainder of the series...It is really not Dhoni's absence that haunting in Indians' minds but their loss to WI in the 1st match which even Dhoni batted. Those who're were closely following my earlier comments must remember that I profoundly predicted soon after the CT finals that Dhoni's luck is running out and it happened in their v.next match by losing to WI and now losing Dhoni due to an injury. My prediction was right 101%. My next prediction - India will be losing to SL in today's match. Those who didn't mark my words in my earlier prediction better mark my word atleast now. Sorry my dear Indian friends! Your tough luck just began a couple of days ago...

Posted by Ali_86xz on (July 2, 2013, 2:46 GMT)

Isn't time to give Amit Mishra a go? Why let him down seeing his recent form in the IPL and he can also bat, he is jus getting selected in the 15 man squad and flying all over the world for nothing, there isn't a better chance then now, Ashwin can also be rested for a while. India: Sharma, Dhawan, Kohli, Raina, DK, Rayudu, Sir Jaddu, Mishra, Bhuvi, Ishant, Yadav.

Posted by Ali_86xz on (July 2, 2013, 2:29 GMT)

Tharanga and Mahela should open, Sanga, Chandimal, Thirimanne in middle order. If they bat until 30-35 over, Mathews, Kusal, J Mendis and Kula can take them to a big score. Kusal should bat in the middle order to boost it without the presence of Perera or somebody. Kusal is a waste at opening, Bhuvi will remove him. Line-up: Tharanga, Mahela, Sanga, Chandimal, Thirimanne, Mathews, Kusal, J Mendis, Kula, Senanayake, Malinga.

i have a feeling Kholi will struggle as captain and the it would be hard for the team to adapt to his method of captaincy since he tends to show his aggression which is a bad quality, this is a big opportunity for sri lanka hope they'l prevail from this!!!

nice way for kohli to gain edge on captaincy... he got captaincy against his FAV team....all the best... i hope he comes good......

Posted by NKSathya on (July 2, 2013, 1:01 GMT)

Kohli's captaincy skills were severely tested in the last ODI game against West Indies! Surely India would have won the match hands down had MS Dhoni been in-charge!! There is no doubt about that. The previous ODI which everyone fancied England to win...was won by India by 5 runs (and gave India the Champions Trophy) due to Dhoni's brilliant captaincy and handling of bowlers! This ODI with West Indies down....India could not pull off victory due to Kohli's poor handling of bowlers and poor strategic moves!! Everyone in the world know that West Indies (particularly the lower order) struggle against slow bowling and despite Raina bowling so beautifully, Kohli persisted with seamers in the end overs and lost the match. His handling of spinners was poor and we lost the match which we should have won!! So disappointing!!!

Posted by gnanzcupid on (July 2, 2013, 0:34 GMT)

Suddenly dhoni's absence is making the indian team look more weaker. But even this team is far more enough to beat a listless team like lanka. I predict a indo-windian final.

No matter wat SL fans believe, After Mathews taken captaincy most of the matches lost from team selection. SL dont mind losing small tourneys like this, but after givin opportunity to youngsters to shine. we hv ppl in SL A, who r reasonably in form. SL can try S Lakmal as another seamer. I like to see Chandimal as a opener in this game. SL need to think out of the box and thats their secret to success. They shouldn't do patchy works like making Mahela to open the batting. But non of SL fans cant understand how selectors include ppl whos not even in the SL A to the SL team. that worries lot. coz most of the ppl questioning "whats the point of playing for SL A?" To be honest there s no ppl to make a balanced team. All rounders like Chathuranga de silva, Angelo Perera should give some chance to perform in big stage. God bless SL Selectors to make more n more squads like this.

What I did not like about Kusal being dropped is that he played all the tough matches in England and he is not given a chance here. Either he should have been dropped in the CT or let him play this tournament. He has potential, yes he failed in England, just give the bugger a chance.

India SL, kohlis favorite to win. Doesn't matter he is captain. He will make big scores against SL. Also Ambathy rayadu should be in in place of Vijay. Give a chance to Ambathy. He is in form now. That is my suggesstion.

[1} Herath is not in ODI material. His ODI avg is 40+ and he fails match after match. Why they don't use Sachithra. He has been warming the bench since CT.What a shame.Bring back Sachithra as soon as possible. He is a clever limited over bowler than Herath.

[2]Don't use both Thiri and Chandi in same team.Sanga+Mahela+Chandi+Thiri can be good test batting lineup.

[3]Please bring back Kusal.22 year old young player warms the bench and 29 years old out of form Tharanga opens the batting. What a shame.

[4]Thanks to Sanath there are no big hitters in the lower middle order.Because he already dropped Thisara.Loku is a good choice. But selectors use him as a passenger.Thank god.

Kusal Perera has had enough chances. He seems like one stroke wonder. Sri Lanka needs som stability in its batting order. It's not as if there are aravindas and arjunas in the team. And what's with angelo Mathews body language? He looks defeated even before the game begins. Anyways, my money is on the Indians, literally.

Tharanga should be replaced with Kusal Janith. Tharanga lacks the technique and the form right now. At least Kusal will hit out or get out, without eating up balls

Ambati Rayudu should get the nod ahead of Vijay. Vijay is an opener and is unproven in the middle order at any level. Pushing Raina at 5 and Rayudu at 6 followed by Jadeja would be a solid lineup

Is it Mahela opening a long term plan with 2015 in focus?I doubt so better to get some young blood installed now & give some extended run.Mathew has to play a better role as a batsman & a captain. Ranil Herath - Kent

kusal perera should open the batting with mahela while tharanga should bat in the middle order

Ideally Sri Lanka should go with Kusal opening batting, because Mahela's promotion is mere short term decision to win the game. Going forward SL need a solid opening pair and Kusal is a potential candidate along with Upul, Dimuth.
