West Indies tri-series 2013 July 2, 2013

Injured Rampaul replaced by Holder

ESPNcricinfo staff
27

Fast bowler Ravi Rampaul, who sprained his ankle during West Indies' opening game of the tri-series, has been left out of the squad for the second half of the tournament. He has been replaced by Jason Holder.

Rampaul had had a scan following West Indies' win against Sri Lanka that revealed the extent of his injury, and subsequently did not play their second match, against India. Captain Dwayne Bravo had also missed that game, due to a groin strain, but his injury was not severe and he is likely to be fit for the remainder of the series.

Holder, who debuted for West Indies on their limited-overs tour of Australia earlier this year, was also part of their Champions Trophy squad but did not get a game in the tournament. He had impressed for Chennai Super Kings in the limited opportunities he was given in IPL 2013.

West Indies won both their games in the Jamaica-leg of the series, and will now travel to Port of Spain - where the remaining league games and the final will be played - as the current table-toppers.

if WI want to be a good one day side this has to be the team:

    1) Gayle 2) Charles(wk) 3) Sarwan 4) Bravo 5) Samuels 6) Pollard 7)Dwayne Bravo (c) 8) Best 9) Rampaul 10) Narine11) Roach

Four fast bowlers. 3 spin option with 3 reliable batsmen and 3 attacking batsman. rest are good enough, most important great fielding side. They need Bravo to have good field placement. WI needs to improve on: running between the wickets and rotating strike. It won't take long for them to be one of the sides to beat. I predict if given 10 games together this team will be in top 4 in ICC ranking. I am not WI fan , I just love cricket. I am just Sachin Tendulkar Fan. Cricket is not all about hitting the ball out of park. Rotating strike, quick singles, great fielding wing matches. U don't find Individual brilliant players like: Sachin, Lara, Pointing always...So its very important to play as a team and lift each others confidence. People who know cricket will know exactly what i am talking about.

Holder potentially may be a good player but his record at the regional level, A team level and senior international level is not special. The selectors are probably putting too many eggs in one basket at the expense of depressing other players such as Gabriel, Beaton, Cotterel etc. They should be reminded of Xavier Marshall who was given endless chances at a very young age but fizzled to zero. I am all for the youth but please diversify. Holder needs much more cricket at the regional and A' team levels.

@ Riddymon , Marlon Samuels is an equal bowler in ODI than Sammy ..

Marlon has the same economy and the same strike-rate ...

Stats simply do not back up your conclusion that Sammy takes "important" wickets , at a low Economy ...

It is true, that Sammy's last 3 months are his best as a bowler since he started playing for the WI ....

So it is absoloutely a fair statement that he is finally proving his worth as a bowler ....

because in ODI, Marlon Samuels could replace Sammy.. and in Test, Doenarine usually out bowls Sammy as well .... with Samuels or Deonarine in the team, Sammy can be easily replaced with a Strike Bowler .....

Ramdin to play for TRINIDAD, Gayle at 3, Xavior Marshall to be mentored by Samuels, Andre Russel to be coached by Gayle and Walsh, Brendan Nash to understudy Chanderpaul, maybe then have a team to compete at all levels of cricket.

  • Riddymon on July 3, 2013, 11:44 GMT

@Gopaul: "Regarding Sammy, it appears as though he is now demonstrating his worth as a bowler in this team." How is he NOW demonstrating? He's been one of the most consistent bowlers in the side. Always economical and always has a knack of taking key wickets. Now that his batting has vastly improved over the past year, he should be a permanent fixture in the side and used in his proper role as a workhorse, 1st/2nd change bowler. That's what he does best.

i see the featured comments and i wonder who is it that manage these comments platforms??? you have be kidding me when a dude is talking about the best Windies team yet have the likes of Sarwan batting at one down and the recently injured Rampaul as one of your front line bowlers lol, i mean seriously?? lol . it would seem that a featured comment is one which aligns closely with the thoughts of the editor/blog manager instead of what makes the better cricket sense. and who is to say that some dude sitting halfway round the world who maybe only catches a glimpse of the senior team play is knowledgeable about windies cricket and its politics to know what the solution is... but i guess they are pundits so they know best lol

Tino Best should NEVER have been left out of the West Indies test side. I fail to remember a player with more heart - and determination. At times, it boils over resulting in the odd loose delivery - but I will take his +90mph bowling and unrelenting attitude over the 80mph served up by Rampaul, Edwards and co over the years. The ODI game is different, but Tino should have been shown far more faith. He and Roach should be joined by Delorn Johnson and Miguel Cummins in the test squad - only then, with variety and extreme pace, will the West Indies attack be feared once again by touring batsmen. WICB - PLEASE NOTE!!! Time to get some life back into the pitches AND the bowlers!!!

-Tino best has been better since he has been back. but he gives too many runs away at the other end. when kemar is steaming in and is bowling well. he releases the pressure. - i would go with Cotterel/Johnson to support Roach and Rampaul. - Sarwan should not see back the west indies odi/t20 team. his batting has gone so bad, he is the worse fielder in the west indies. he is so unfit

I am fine with the current team. I would just like to see them get rid of ramdin and bring in the extra bowler . all the west indies bowlers can bat a bit, especially when it comes to hitting shots. so that covers it a bit.

    1.Gayle 2. Charles(wk) 3. Bravo 4. Samuels 5. Pollard 6. Dw Bravo 7. Sammy 8. Narine 9. Roach 10. Rampaul 11. Cotterel

you ppl obviously didn't watch the same game of cricket that i did, cuz it was obvious that even though Best was initially expensive, the Indians were clearly unsettled by his pace. they were out of their comfort zone, their top scorer Sharma, should have been taken in Best's 2nd over whilst Sammy was sleeping.

  • simonviller on July 3, 2013, 5:14 GMT

I question those who want Best out of the team ! The guy is under-utilised in WI team , not only for his bowling ,but for his batting and the energy which he imparts to the rest of the team . Its unfathomable why a guy like Narine is sent to bat before Best . Here is guy who is pulled from the bench to fill a role when least expected ,but is always up to the task pace and fitness wise . He just needs to be given the opportunity to develop the form as any fast bowler would after being pushed in and out of a team . He'll be more consistent when given his due , both with bat and ball .

Lots to argue about regarding the selection and de-delection. If anyone has an understanding of Darren Bravo's inclusion in the team, please share. Regarding Best as a fast bowler, there is no doubt he bowls fast, but I do not believe he is sensible nor a wicket taker.Regarding Sammy, it appears as though he is now demonstrating his worth as a bowler in this team. Reards to Ramdin, he belongs with the Trinidad team not West Indies, but as long as Bravo and Pollard are decision makers ramdin continues to play.

For the next world cup this is how the West Indian team should look like 1)C Gayle 2)J Charles(w.k.)3)D Bravo 4)M Samuels 5)D Bravo(c)6)D Smith 7)K Pollard 8)D Sammy 9)S Narine 10)K Roach 11) R Rampaul 12)A Russell13)R Sarwan 14)T Best 15)S Badree

  • on July 2, 2013, 18:51 GMT

charles should be the wk. ramdin has less odi runs than sammy in more games played.. how he reached 100 odis only speaks to the dearth of wk in the west indies. why shouldn't andre russell be mentioned??? sure he had a lean patch with the w.i but compare his stats to pollard, sammy, holder, best and dw bravo and tell me what you see.

  • BRUTALANALYST on July 2, 2013, 17:12 GMT

I'm not convinced about Holder yet, he still seems a bit young and slow needs to develop a little more also the Indians and Sri Lankans have seen him in the IPL. So I would of gone with Gabriel or Cotteral/Johnson to add left arm option. People callin to drop Best are stupid he has been great and added much needed boost to the lackluster all-round dibly dobly attack. He and Roach should always play with one of the 3 youngsters mentioned above I do agree Ramdin has got to go there is no room for a player like him in the modern game and Charles has shown he has ability to take the gloves in the short format.

  • simonviller on July 2, 2013, 15:24 GMT

I don't think some people on her are following WI cricket , judging from some of their comments about who should and shouldn't be selected .

  • Metman on July 2, 2013, 15:19 GMT

@ aclarity !!!.....check and then comment on whose record is the BEST between Holder,Gabriel,Cotterel,Beaton and Holder !!!

  • on July 2, 2013, 15:06 GMT

    - Jerome taylor isnt even playing for jamaica at the moment. so he cant even be considered .

    - I back those up calling for ramdin to be dropped, not just because of his performance but also because of the progress of johnson charles. i think charles allows us to have a extra frontline batsman so we can add a bowler or all rounder

-Cotterel, Gabriel and Holder all played for West Indies A in the recent series against the West Indies . Personally, i would prefer cotterel, a left armer with pace. big and strong. would give the attack variety

the west indies team is in a good place at the moment. i think we couldve gone to the champions trophy final, had we not been so unlucky against south africa

. We need some test cricket. see if we can move up the rankings

  • Riddymon on July 2, 2013, 15:05 GMT

@Peter_in_Canada: I wonder why people keep askin for Jerome Taylor. I doubt he will ever play for the West Indies again. He has pretty much lost favor with the national squad selectors and he hasn't bowled for them in years. There's too much young up and coming bowlers and current performing bowlers for him to be considered again seeing as how he hasn't played international cricket in so long. His name doesn't even come up as one of the possibles. I could be wrong but I highly doubt it.

As for andre russell, kinda glad to not see him in the side. He doesn't produce that often with the bat and he's very expensive with the ball.

  • Twinkie on July 2, 2013, 14:36 GMT

What about Andre Russell? Are you kidding me? Do you even watch cricket? At least Tino Best came back and took two very important wickets at the end. He also showed the good sense with the bat that the batsmen did not. At least he deserves one more chance. Shannon Gabriel and a few others seem to have been forgotten for some strange reason. I do wish them good luck for the future series.

As for those callin to drop Best are you mad ? you obviously haven't been watching the games Best has been outstanding and given a well needed lift to the lackluster weak allrounder bowling attack. It should be Roach, Best and 3rd pacer holder/Gabriel/Johnson for the near future Ramdin has to go let Charles take the gloves he looked more than capable and will only improve there is no room for keepers like Ramdin in the modern game.

  • on July 2, 2013, 12:36 GMT

    J. Taylor is he in top form as he was? I fully support to have one of the two most lethal fast bowlers between Castro and Taylor. I even suggest in the forthcoming game to start with Charles and Devon Smith in order to build Physiological technique. Any opponent if managed to take Gayle wicket they can build a confidence of taking the remaining cheaply. Tino Best should be replaced.
