Virat Kohli has praised the Indian team for showing character by brushing aside early losses in the tri-series to finish on top of the table and qualify for the final. India beat Sri Lanka by 81 runs under the D/L method and the two teams will play each other again in the final on July 11.

"To bounce back like this and finish at the top of the table is a commendable effort. I am very proud of the team," Kohli said. "We have shown a lot of character. When three good teams are playing in the tournament, anything can happen. We were never bothered about the rain delays. Our performance showed what happens when one executes their plans properly."

The match against Sri Lanka was a must-win game for India and they struggled early in their innings on a difficult pitch. Kohli, who shared a 49-run stand with Rohit Sharma for the second wicket, said the team had a game plan of conserving wickets. India were on 119 for 3 when rain ended their innings.

"When Rohit and I were playing, we just wanted to play ourselves in. It paid in the end, because we had wickets in hand, and it worked in the D/L calculations in our favour," Kohli said. "Then the bowlers responded beautifully. Full credit to them."

Rohit Sharma, who fought hard for his 48 not out, was pleased with his effort. "I took it up as a challenge. I know that I have a long way to go," he said. "I am really not bothered about whether I am getting a big score as long as I am contributing and working on my mistakes."

Also crucial to India's defence of 178 in 29 overs - a revised D/L target - was Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Making good use of the pitch after the long rain delay, he finished with career-best figures of 4 for 8 in six overs, and said the pitch at Queens Park Oval was the 'most helpful one' that he had bowled on so far.

Sri Lanka's captain, Angelo Mathews said the rain delay had made the pitch tougher for his batsmen. "We bowled well, but when we batted the pitch had been under covers and had sweated more. We had nothing to lose and went for the win," Mathews said after his team was dismissed for 96. "It's mentally and physically draining to play three days in a row. We have played some good cricket to get to the final, hopefully we can beat India on Thursday."

@sl_kamal, we had a 50 over match and we won it..What do you say now?

@ SL_kamal --- Ok you got your wish. India beat SL in the match that went for 50 overs. Now lets hear your part of the bargain.

I am avid cricket fan. Of course I am a supporter of Team India. But I am willing to blast/villify/criticise my team if they lose. There are times when Umpires may have made an error. But cricket rules are such that we need to accept that. Rain and other stoppages and resultant D/L method can also be frustrating. Again one has to accept it. But whatever I do, I know what I DONT do-that is to blame the other team. If they won, it was thier hard work. Such was the way SL beat India a few days. I accepted it. But I find it hard to stomach that almost 90% if not more SL fans, who post comments here are bad losers and blame everyone-weather, India, D/L method, pitch and just about anything that can catch theri fancy...tsk...tsk...tsk SL supporters, please show some sportsmanship. I truly hope you do not think India wont he World Cup (sadly over you) and Champions trophy by pure luck? tsk...tsk...tsk..

@ SL_rockz --- All indian fans know more about D&L. We have lost matches due to D&L , but we have never complained about D&L. We normally criticize our team for their failures. Yes, if there are very bad umpiring decisions, we blame the umpire as well. But that's as far as we go. I find it amusing that you blame luck while ignoring that luck plays a factor in winning tosses as well. Your team won the toss and made a bad decision. Instead of criticizing your team captain for making bad decision despite winning the toss, you are criticizing weather, D&L, pitch, umpires, Luck etc. D&L has been around for 15 years and it was devised by people with better intellect than the posters in this forum. If you have a better method, please feel free to share with ICC. You talk about Indian team folding for 120 if asked to bat only for 26 overs ? How did you come with that statistic ? You do realize that India scored 54 from the last 10 overs before the rain interruption right ?

Posted by Cricfan_99 on (July 11, 2013, 8:13 GMT)

All SL Fans - Stop blaming LUCK, DRS, RAIN, PITCH, (Kula+Dilshan+Thisara..etc etc).... Geez - you sound exactly like Angelo in his presentations.. as someone had earlier said Angelo would've won an Olympic medal if giving excuses was a global sport. No wonder his captaincy is mediocre - because he's thinking just like you folks.

@ SL_kamal --- what if SL win the match tomorrow and it doesn't go the complete 50 overs distance ?

Posted by SL_rockz on (July 11, 2013, 7:14 GMT)

Most of indian fans comment here without knowing that D/L is a statistical calculation. Does not look take overcast conditions or green pitches or nothing. It was based on pure stats. It is a final year project project and most of the stat expertise accept it is unfair coz it does not account for the pitch conditions and the real state of the game.Stats cannot penetrate those factors. It is used because no Mathematician/Statistician regards such a formulation important enough to spend their time on to produce a better one.

India were given 29 overs to bat from the start of the match and will they score 177+ runs in this bouncy pitch. They will rather fall nearly to 120 by trying to take on bowlers from the beginning as it happened to SL.It is normal in nature when you knew you have 10 wickets in hand for 27 overs you attack bowlers. But in this pitch if u try doing so u will end up loosing your wickets..D/L is not the uniquely accepted one. Many in the stats world dont accept this .

Posted by JohnnyRook on (July 11, 2013, 7:05 GMT)

I see so much negativity on this board. I have a challenge for people who don't like D-L method. Get a better one. Would you like a simplistic Runs per over which doesn't consider wickets and shortened duration or would you like least productive over method used in 92 world cup which resulted in SA getting a 22 run target in 1 ball. Onlt decent competetor of D-L method is VJD method and difference between both in negligible in most cases.

Bottomline is SL fans should stop crying and Indian fans should remember that D-L is not the best method possible but the best available one. Peace.

We (IND) already won many 50-50 matches against SL in many occasions. The day before yesterday match you (SL) can't able to reach ours (IND) run on the table 119. As our is concerned we beat you by 23 runs. That 23 runs is more than enough for us to reach final. We also have difficulties in batting on that day due to pitch condition. Tell me that if malinga ever bowled a maiden after kholi's performance in Australia. We agree that the pitch is dry and it is totally against batting for both the teams. Don't tell we (IND) has always luck. Our Bowlers did great job on tues eve in Caribbean........

SL_kamal

Tell me on which parameters you say condition of the pitch has drastically changed. What makes you can't think of anything other than "India's luck" to explain this series? When SL was bowling at IND, you felt exceptional spells that made IND in a spot of bother. When IND responded with 4 wickets of SL in 8.3 overs, you observed drastically changed pitch. Is it fair to say IND had enough batted in 29 overs & let SL to chase the same? Tell me SL had never used D/L system before. Is SL board opposing D/L system? Neither pitch was changed nor "India's luck". You have not answered to my single point. I am a fan of watching quality cricket. I would like to watch ASHES more than this. If my IND play badly, I would not make any excuse but would dare to say that IND played badly. Even those who are following this column have same opinion. You can't expect 100 overs cricket play in a day every times as nobody know what will happen in future. I am talking about change in a nature.

The honest and sporting side would never point on LUCK, terrible decision, D/L, Rain benefitted India. Whatever you said is a clearly biased version. Hence Virat kohli have really proved what he said. He stood firm there even after he ran out of his partners. He spoke with his familiar tool and gave his team a hope for win. He crossed his first hurdle with bonus point. In a last game he was stopped in the midway and asked to bowl SL to go into final. He walked in with his army & shown the entire world that they are CHAMPS. He proved critics wrong by going on TOP of table with 2 BONUS points. After reading your entire comment, I have no doubt in my mind that you are SL fan not an IND fan. Hello Everybody!

I noticed that everyone here is talking about the advantages and Dis-Advantages of D/L Method and saying that indian team was lucky because of D/L Method. Well i would say that D/L is a part of game and it can be enjoyed by any team and that does not mean that the team is unworthy of winning matches. I Know that the current indian team which is doing well also has certain problems but One thing you should always remember that everyone has his/her problems and it can be sorted out. Since you guys don't have a better choice, you should stop criticising D/L Method & team India & M.S.D. If you can't praise them, atleast don't criticise them. TALKERS ARE NO GOOD DOERS !

Posted by McGorium on (July 11, 2013, 1:51 GMT)

@Nothingness: There cannot be a statistically good measure; statistics is inadequate for predicting the value of a particular sample. Eg, statistics is useful if you want to predict how many people in a large sample space will die this year. Statistics fails when you try to predict whether an individual will die this year. (You can assign a probability to the individual's death this year, but that doesn't guarantee the outcome). You're trying to predict what India would have scored in 26 overs had they known about it from the start, based on some assumptions. D/L weighs wickets in hand much higher than RR or overs to spare. You might place less weight on wickets, and more on RR/overs to spare, and you have a team with 160/5 in 25 overs getting an unfair advantage. The fact is, there is no "fair" or correct way of doing it, statistically; it's impossible. D/L wouldn't produce a travesty like 22 in 1 ball. Any system replacing D/L would also necessarily be flawed, and easy to "game".

As India fan, happy that India team has reached finals. All credit to the youngsters, for coming back after losing first two matches. Spare a thot for the Windies tho. Ppl thot they were unlucky to get knocked out of the CT13. But even in their own backyard they hv not been able to break thru. In spite of all the talent at their disposal, looks like they hv a long way to go!

I understand the feelings of SL fans. But just look at the recent SL performance against India. Other than the last game without B Kumar, help me with any game where SL was even close to India. And even in the last game, look at the bowling cards of Ishant and Umesh. They were so "ordinary" even in one of the most "bowling friendly" pitch. So I doubt whether SL would have even won if B Kumar was there in the last game. So please stop whining and enjoy the game. BCCI has no way to bribe rain gods.

To Virat Kohli, if he ever reads this post. "You are a very good talented cricketer. But please be humble and polite. I am not advising you to be Dhoni. But at least please try to take a look at the way Dhoni talks when the team wins/loses".

Bogelking & Sandip Manjrekar

If IND can win the Finals tomorrow in a match that goes the full distance of 50 overs, I agree that they are a better team than SL. Good luck :)

Posted by SL_kamal on (July 10, 2013, 22:19 GMT)

Bogelking & Sandip Manjrekar:

D/L is just an ESTIMATION to calculate target for the team batting second in a rain effected match. This ESTIMATION is done based on the number of runs scored, overs spend and wickets fallen for the team batting first. It doesn't (and obviously can't)consider facts such as change of pitch and out field conditions before and after the rain or disturbances to the momentum of a team.

So obtaining a target using D/L can be fair at times, it can be very unfair at other times. Especially when condition of the pitch has drastically changed. That's what happened in both the matches IND have won this series.

I am not telling that we have another option to D/L this moment. But to be honest I can't think of anything other than "India's luck" to explain this series. Because the truth is they are getting far better advantage than other teams generally do in this series. Sorry to hurt your feelings, hope you'll be able to prove me wrong by winning a proper50/50 Final

Posted by johnstanley on (July 10, 2013, 20:47 GMT)

As an Indian supporter and fan, I have couple of comments. Virat Kohli needs to learn to be a lot more humble. There is little doubt about rain changed everything since India were 119/3 after 29 overs and it did not look like it was going to be a big score. Rain has benefitted India tremendously and any Indian fan would agree with that. I am at a loss to understand the D/L system as SL were left to score a lot more runs given where our team was. Lastly what no one is talking about and rushing to take credit is that a terrible decision by the Umpire on Kumar Sangakara changed the fate of the game. The ball clearly pitched outside the leg stump and would have gone over the stumps. It was stunningly poor decision. While part of me was happy that he was out, the honest and sporting side of me reminded me that it is NOT how any team should win. Therefore Virat Kohli, count your blessing as you are very lucky and it had nothing to do with your captaincy or a stunning performance!

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 20:44 GMT)

D/L method was a blessing in disguise. But still Bhuvaneshwar was incredible all credit goes to that man. When will Umesh and Ishant learn to bowl tight line. All the wickets these two are getting is just a mistake from batsman.

India and sri lanka have met on 46 occasions since last 6 years with India winning 70% of the matches. This young Indian team who are the World as well as ICC Champions trophy winners have as champions do -had a great comeback after loosing the first 2 matches to top the league. It would indeed special for this young inexperienced team to give its all and win the final. All the best India. To think that this Indian team has performed in the absence of Sehwag-Gambhir-Zaheer-Harbhajan-Yuvraj and Sachin is amazing

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 19:28 GMT)

If India scored 119/3 in 29 overs and the D/L target should have been less to about 100 (for example). If that makes it fair then SL also have only 3 wickets in hand to balance it and act if it was a 50 over game instead of T20 mode on. Maybe they should not have lost wickets early aswell? Isn't the D/L method meant to suit the team batting second as we see from history?

Posted by Nothingness on (July 10, 2013, 18:23 GMT)

To everyone who had posted about the D/L calculation:

It should be understood that D/L method is regarded as an inadequate and unsuitable formulation for ODI by the majority of cricket specialists and mathematicians. After all this method was originated from a final year undergraduate project. It is used because no Mathematician/Statistician regards such a formulation important enough to spend their time on to produce a better one.

Just think about something. Do we really believe that India could have scored 177 in 26 overs on this pitch if they started off with a 26 overs a side game. They would probably loose more wickets than they had originally by trying to accelerate the rate, as was the case when ever they tried to go after the bowling. I personally think that they wouldn't have even scored 120.

In any case I think that currently the better team is India. Sri Lanka are even without their best ODI bowler as well as batsman in Kulasekara and Dilshan.

Posted by Prasad_Reddy on (July 10, 2013, 18:12 GMT)

I'm surprised to see SL supporters are commenting as if India is winning matches with sheer luck? If some rule is introduced by ICC say it is D/L or something else, it must have been approved by all cricket playing nations including Sri Lanka.

If we look back at recent Champions trophy semi final, can any one say India won it with luck? Sri Lanka 181/8 (50/50 ov); India 182/2 (35/50 ov)

Posted by ram4crictheory on (July 10, 2013, 18:11 GMT)

All the people who are breaking their heads about D/L need to understand that the score was exaggerated not only because the batting team has lost fewer wickets but also the bowling team will have all the 10 wickets in hand for less overs (28 overs in yesterday's case) instead of 50 overs, so that they can play more aggressively. Moreover all this ifs and buts about D/L has been done years ago when it was initially started and found out this was the best available method.

So guys, instead of finding faults with D/L it is fruitful to learn how to adapt it better.

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 18:11 GMT)

I still cant understand why Srilankans still cannot accept that india is much above them in ODI's. They are winning 2 while they plays 10 games against each other, just as bangladesh do that. Now they are saying india won because of rain, india won 4-1 in SL last year, was tht because of rain? wht abt world cup? wht about last 10 ODI's>?? It should be acceptable that SL performance has gone down after the retirement Murali, Vaas, Jayasurya. Their young players are not at all showing any class except chandimal and mathews. It will be more pathetic after MJ and KS retires. Well stop blaming and improve your cricket.

Posted by Kapilnew on (July 10, 2013, 18:09 GMT)

In my opinion, Team should try Shami Ahamed as a new ball pair along with Bhuvi... Both can really swing the ball and hit the Right area.. Moreover both of them needed to be groomed to the next WC... Ishant is taking wicket but he is too expensive with the ball. so need to groom Umesh or look for another option soon, since there is not much time left for the next WC. rest of the current team is perfect with Dhoni leading in front. Yuvraj should show some consistency in Domestic level and try to come into the team, that will make the team balance with the correct flavor.

Posted by India_Janesh on (July 10, 2013, 18:03 GMT)

I'm very happy about Buvaneshwar Kumar, so now we have a replacement for Irfan Pathan. But, considering the match, it was purely a lottery for India. We have to accept that this is somewhat unfair. We were struggling in batting to be honest, and they bowled really well, specially Malinga, Mathews, and Herath. Pitch may or may not played a bigger role, but Buvi did really well to get the best out of the pitch. I think Kohli must stop speaking as if they did magic. He is just highlighting himself. I wish Dhoni captains India until a suitable captain arrives to the squad.

Wonder whether we could see that 'character' if it was not rain and had full 50 overs for the both sides.

Posted by SL_rockz on (July 10, 2013, 17:38 GMT)

India were 119/3 at a RR of 4.4 . After the rain SL were given a target of RR 6.8 .D/L method suggested IF THEY KNEW thing for this to happen. But look at this pitch .India were scrambling at the moment for 119 and Only jadeja to come as a batmen.Pitch was still seaming and bouncing irrespective of rain. So how unfair is it on SL to imagine India will score with a 8+ Run Rate in their next 21 overs. But D/L method didnot have anything regarding pitch or the condition of the match when match was stopped. It was just statistics. I am not telling D/L is always wrong. But in here it clearly favors India.Because D/L method imagined India will score with RR of 8+ in 21 overs they did not actually faced. But did they consider how difficult to even maintain even 5 runs per over in that pitch. Meanwhile D/L calculated a score without any idea of pitch behavior in next 21 overs of India innings and gave SL based on that a target to chase actually on the real pitch..:) Funny.

If that case India would be out of tournament also, common guys I know India has a pretty strong line up but with Virat Kohli captancey there is noway they would have come this far if the mother nature wouldn't help them, So that case Kholi is lucky to be release his statement of showing charatstics. I am a fan of Kholi as he being a batsman and thats it and his captancey and attitude big "0". We all know the rules and laws of cricket and can't argue against it but with that Pitch condition and the way that ball flies thru not only SL any other team would have struggle, It was unfortunate that SL have to go thru it but its alrite because they have an another shot at Final. It was a good win for India to help them get into final but it wasn't anyskill ful win to cheer about it.

Why I always see lot of complaints about luck and rain from our Sri Lankan supporters after they loose ? These fans were not complaining when they had scored 211 in 41 overs while WI was to chase 230 in same overs a day earlier ? D/L is a method to get a result and is uniformly applied and no one has control of rain. I wonder why no SL fan praises fortune after winning toss. SL is a good team, but India is better at the moment. So stop whinning and play better to win.

Really Bhuvi has proved his worth in the team, India had got an excellent new ball bowler hope he plays more matches for India without injuries unlike other Indian bowlers. Just need another bowler like him so India can strengthen its bowling attack ...

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 16:36 GMT)

NO idea how this is even possible......119/3 in 29 overs a rate little over 4 and suddenly few hrs of rain stoppage SL chasing score at a rate of 6.8.......as if IND would have scored 210 in last 21 overs in a bowling paradise while only Jadeja to come and Malinga with 8 overs in the bag.....Totally disagree if some one would say the D/L is calculated on the base "IF THEY KNEW" ....... Anyway in one angle its good that WI not in the finals since last time too in T20 WC they came to semis based on SL performance and they don't deserve a second chance......and for SL hope at least now the Boys in the selection team will realize there's no MAN as handy as T.perera for no 7 spot.

As you said that India and Kohli should thank the rain for winning both the matches for them, rain bowled 11 cheap overs for them just for 37 runs against WI, the rain made a very difficult pitch to bat on later, against SL India were in a spot of bother with 119/3, rain awarded with a far better total to defend while SL were awarded a terrible pitch to bat on.

Are you saying that rain, pitch, D/L & IND are playing cricket with SL? What makes you bother in IND-SL match? 119 runs, 3 wickets or terrible pitch. Was it better pitch before rain came and make it terrible? If you say that it should not be 178 & should be less 119, then fair enough to say that you had to chase with 3 wickets only. By the way SL lost 4 wickets in first 9 overs and match finished because you have take both runs & wkt into consideration. The law of equilibrium applies every where.

What SL_kamal said is not right. In those two matches, it was the rival teams that won the toss and put India to bat. If the teams were that much cunning and intuitive on understanding that rain would arrive and result in the advent of D/L, they should have batted first. Instead to gain a bonus point and stay alive in the series both the teams opted to ball first and thought of reaching the target within the 40 over mark. What India did was to stick to the basics and be positive and they are reaping the benefit of that attitude. Besides the BCCI has no contract with rain Gods , that they could provide showers when India is in a precarious situation. If one do not want to appreciate a victory, you are free not to do it. But please do not underestimate the skills of the team by putting some nonsensical statements.

Let alone the top of the table position, India and Kohli should thank the rain for winning both the matches for them. India couldn't win any of the matches that went on the full distance of 50 overs.

Though they made 311/7, their bonus point victory against WI was largely possible due to rain who bowled 11 cheap overs for them just for 37 runs. And also after the rain it was a very difficult pitch to bat on.

The match they won against SL was even worse. India were in a spot of bother with 119/3. But thanks tho rain they were awarded with a far better total to defend while SL were awarded a terrible pitch to bat on.

I am sure the rain god will play a similar role in the Finals too. So you don't have to worry Kohli and India. You will be the easy rainy winners.

Virat Kohli is a smart guy like AUS, ENG players who are expert in verbal war. From nowhere he announced just before the match of MSD's availability for the final if IND make it. That changed everything in the entire SL camp where everybody got panic. The SL's dismal performance yesterday was nothing but cos of MSD's fear in their minds. D/L is nothing but mere excuse for the defeat.

SL supporters always say they're unlucky. They're lucky to be in the final. If rain wouldn't have interrupted SL WI game, SL would have been out of the tournament by now.

1st of all Sri Lanka took D/L to their advantage for the game against West Indies- which might have been a different result if there was no rain. And now India made use of D/L even better by keeping wickets intact and giving sri lanka to chase a stiff target in a crazy pitch. Sri Lanka could not even wait for the ball to get softer and go after the bowling later on to chase 178 at more than 6 runs.Afterall india was going at 4 runs an over in their innings!! This game is goine mad with D/L method. This should be replaced

MSD in place of Karthik. I like Vijay at #6 he can play big shots.

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 14:30 GMT)

The umpiring in this tri-series is poor. Sangakkara got a poor decision. in earlier games D.Karthick and J.Mendis got couple of shockers too. UDRS is a must in these situations

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 14:25 GMT)

The record of India in Tri series is not good. This time they should not give any chance to the opponent and should play with MSD because he is the master of tackling pressure of Final. Best of luck to Indian team.

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 14:02 GMT)

Im really disappointed by karthik's performance! He should be out of team once dhoni is back

Posted by Ramarabia on (July 10, 2013, 14:00 GMT)

Congrats to Team India and i hope India can handle the pressure well than the Sri Lankan's like other finals earlier. Also my view is MS should not play in finals and to be rested. If team India wins the final, the credit goes to Virat and when he can bring India to the top of the points table, i believe he can win the finals for Team India. It is unfair, MS Dhoni plays the final because the Team India is final? He should be rested and the young Virat Kohli to be tested about his temperament and the team management will have a greater chance that know how the new captain handles the pressure? If Virat makes it? then we have one more captain who can win finals for us! If not, we are not going to loose any thing in this Tri-series and the team members can go back to India with the champions trophy what they won in England recently and they deserves a warm welcome too. It is better Sri Lanka to wins this final, since they lost almost all the finals they played recently.

By far the superior team in the shorter versionns of the game...go Team India..

Posted by MMZCric on (July 10, 2013, 13:50 GMT)

The D/L method is GROSSLY FLAWED. It always put one team into a disadvangate and takes away the real competition. One would think that the great cricket minds of this era would create a better system. Any game that is decided by a D/L score is a wasted game and should not be included in the record books.

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 13:47 GMT)

This is the best side. only you can bring back Test King Pujara, praveen kumar, no more sehwag, juvraj and others

Posted by Vishal_07 on (July 10, 2013, 13:44 GMT)

@SLPissa, D/L system is not a perfect one but this is the best there is for a rain curtailed match. Having a roof on all stadiums is not affordable for most of the countries, and D/L is far better than run rate or reducing balls for the least scored runs (remember SA for 22 runs in 1 ball).

It is what it is, dude.

Posted by Snambidi on (July 10, 2013, 13:36 GMT)

It was a sweet win for India with the help of D/L.But then ,in this triseries D/L helped all the three Nations one way or other.Rohit& B.Kumar deserve a lot of gratitude from Indian people . Virat Kohli had said that if India makes it to final Captain Dhoni who has recovered from Injury would perform on Thursday. This gives a ray of Hope for India as the threat of Rain could materialize any time in the Careabean's land. The just one person who could overcome any kind of threat to Indian Cricket under any kind of resents is the Great Skipper Dhoni So all the Best to the Indian Team which deserves nothing less than the Kissing on the Trophy.

so its a India vs Sri Lanka FINAL again

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 12:57 GMT)

SL team has too much of passengers. Seriously what does Jeewan Mendis do? He can't bat, can't bowl, can't field. How on earth can any one justify him playing and not Tissara. Same applies for Chandimal. Forget the talent get some people who could perform. Take Sanga he wasn't the most talented cricketer Sri Lanka produced but he has performed much better than most talented. I am a Sri Lankan supporter but the present side has lot to improve to challenge good sides consistantly.

Posted by Nampally on (July 10, 2013, 12:54 GMT)

A gutsy fighting knock by Rohit Sharma & brilliant spell of accurate seam bowling by B. Kumar sealed the fate of SL. SL went down like dominos for 96 all out! Kumar sent down the SL top 3 in a brilliant spell resulting in 4 Wkts. for 6 runs in 6 overs. Compare this to Yadev's 4.4 overs for 28 runs. I think both Yadev & Ishant should learn from Kumar's bowling & try to emulate him. Hats off to Kumar- he was just brilliant. When Kumar was inexplicable dropped, SL got 340 for one wkt. This makes one wonder why was he dropped when India does not have a bowler of his calibre. Rohit played a fighting knock to put India in a good position on a difficult pitch. He should be commended because of his determination to stay at the crease- a far off cry from what he was a year back. Well done Kiddo. Congrats. to Team India for showing the other 2 teams that India won the ICC Trophy because they are a strong winning Team - Never say Die-type of team. They fought back from brink of elimination to #1.

The plan of preserving wickets for a late flourish (though it did not actually happen) worked well for India. Also the pitch becoming livelier after the rain together with a steep mountain to climb was too much for any team, let alone SL. B Kumar is real smart cricketer, both in terms of bowling and batting. He puts his skills to excellent use and comes up with great contributions. He must be there in conditions like England, NZ where swing will be available more often than not. Wishing team India all the very best for the finals.

kholi should thank Rohit instead BK..

D/L method always robs the match of competition^^^^^^^^^^

Posted by SLPissa on (July 10, 2013, 12:23 GMT)

@Sajeesh M S_How often have we seen on a ordinary day a team with 6 or 7 wickets in hand bowled out within a scope of few overs to a low score after having a good score at the initial stage of a match. Then How can a mathematical system predicts the score that India was going to get had they batted throughout their full 50 over. No One can predict future . Here the SL bowlers were bowling really well and Indians were unable to score freely. Yet D/L method predicts that Had Indians were informed that they had to play only for 26 over they could have go on to get 177. ICC should really LOOK into this Method otherwise cricket will be a dull game if it is a rain affected game. D/L METHOD STEALS THE UNPREDICTABILITY FACTOR FROM THE GAME OF CRICKET.

Virat Kohli is a top class youngster. The other youngsters who have talent but not delivering need to learn from him.

D/L took india to the final. Kohli should greatful to the founders of D/L . Indians are playing good cricket these days though , this tri-series was purely dominated by D/L .

When India just narrowly lost to WI and had one odd bad day, most anti-Indian fans had crawled out of their rocks and started proclaiming Indian victory in CT was fluke andwithout Dhoni and seniors Indian team will fail etc etc etc. Now since India has topped the table with two bonus point wins , I don't see those people commenting anymore. What happened ?Crawled back beneath rocks eh? Best of luck to India

Feel really sad for WI. They should have played in the final Think of the crowd. Its NZ vs ENG final at wankhede

Thanks @777aditya. I hope, Indian fans look at performance in sports. Its more interesting when you take cricket out of patriotism.

To those who don't understand DL rule logic: The DL target was raised to 178 because India had wickets in Hand. At the beginning of Indian innings, they thought they had 50 overs to bat. So, as usual, they batted safely, thinking they could accelerate later. Unfortunately rain came and there was no overs to accelerate. Thus India had no use with the wickets they kept in hand. To compensate this, the target was revised to a higher one. Had they kept less wickets in hand, the DL target would have been lesser. Similarly, if they had know that the match is reduced to 29 overs at the start of their innings and still they scored only 119, the DL target would have been 120 in 29 0vers. There is not so wrong in this revised target as most of you think.

India are playing good cricket, but just one plea do not be overconfident or complacent in the finals. Play the cricket that you have been playing in the ICC and your last 2 games and without a doubt you will be taking this trophy home. There has always been talk about India's strong batting juganots and weak bowling. India's bowling is now operating like a dream and full credit must go to BK who looks a pretty ordinary bowler, but I now realise that he is quite an intelligent bowler and I think it will take a long long time for even the best batsman to work him out provided he keeps his current form consistent.OY needs some practice sessions with a top bowling coach and he will be a force to reckon with due to his speed.RJ is proving to be a very reliable all rounder. There is a lot more positives than negatives about this young team and they can only get better. Although a couple of flops by SD in batting, you must reconginse that these pitches in WI are quite treacherous to bat on.

Posted by ToughNut on (July 10, 2013, 9:10 GMT)

Whatever be the outcome, let the better team win. Though I shout my lungs out for India's win, let us not undermine the strength of Sri Lankan side. They would be hard to beat on their day. There should be no place for complacency as even the best side can lose the match on a given day. Let us not fight the SL fans. They are as patriotic as we are. Ridiculing them will not help building positive vibes. So, three cheers to SL fans.

I think India should be focused and should try their best to grab this cup too. They should not be overconfident as Sri Lanka would take revenge.

Posted by Aksh83 on (July 10, 2013, 7:52 GMT)

@Santhosh Venkataraman..D/L calculation is based on many factors..Team batting first started the match as if its 50 over match..@29 overs with rain arrived, the first team didn't got the chance to bat again..while they have 7 wickets in hand and 21 overs to go they could have easily accelerate..Further, when you give target to the 2nd team to chase they have full 10 wickets to achieve the target, so target have to be adjusted..These are simple logic anyways..And don't forget Srilanka won 1 day back with the same D/L method..where they scored 219/8 in 41 overs and WI had to chase 230 in 41 overs..

Posted by naansari on (July 10, 2013, 7:38 GMT)

Well played team India........the bowlers really did a good job by restricting Sri Lanka to such a low score and getting a bonus point. Most importantly India topped the group after losing the first 2 matches that makes it more special. Hope they will continue the good form in the final too and lift the cup.....best of luck

As an Indian cricket fan at the age of 26, I started to watch cricket only from 96. That with the WC win SL was thrashing all the teams against them in most of the matches. India was the worst hit of all, humiliating 900+ runs in test and 2 times 54 all out in ODI's even during DADA's era.(Era which India started to win more than loss).

Now very happy to see India thrashing SL in all possible ways. WC finals, CT Semis,,, Win in SL,, Chasing 300+ in less than 40 overs. Having almost 70% win ration against SL for the last 5 years. Above all too happy to see the foul cry of SL fans still not accepting the fact that Current Indian team much better than Current SL

Such a quick transition for team India in ODI's with new players.Good to see Dhoni also forming the next level team to take forward after his period. End of WC11 I thought no hope for 2015 WC as it's in Aus, Our bowlers are not strong enough. Now B.kumar, P.Kumar, Umesh, ashwin, RJ. Building hopes. Long way to go TEAM INDIA.

what made to raise the target in minimum over in D/L method.?

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 7:30 GMT)

It's looking like Dhoni will be asked to be with the team even though he got retired.......such an intelligent captain and player, helps the team to win matches whether by being in the squad or dressing room!!!!! Hatsoff Dhoni!!!!!!!!

@ Riyaj Mulla - superb comments mate!! great to see someone not holding back and calling a spade a spade. You have hit the nail bang on its ugly head regarding the Sri Lankan team which is not short of talent, but is badly managed. Could not agree more regarding their captain and ex-captains. If everyone leads, no one is left to follow (adhay left jao, adhay right, baki mere peeche aao)!

Posted by   on (July 10, 2013, 7:11 GMT)

This was a thrilling performance by the Indian team, particularly with the ball. Well deserved one. No series is unnecessary, all goes up to the record books. Sri Lankans took it very seriously at the start of the tour after losing out at the Champions Trophy, so the Indians decided to give this series a little bit of attention. Only a little. And even that was enough. To all those who thought that without MS this team isn't quite the same, need to just look at the margin of win in the last two games. And to all Sri Lankans, watch out, we might well be taking two Cups home this time.

Posted by Rohit... on (July 10, 2013, 7:07 GMT)

2 win with Bonus Points after pushed to the corner means that India deserved respect...If the team sentiments are to be respected then we should not care much about the Final... Even f they lose in the final, they have done more than enough to get a warm welcoming in India... Winning the Champions Trophy in England( the place where the worst period started ) after being touted to finish in the bottom , this new look team has already made us proud...My message to them - "Just go and Enjoy the final. Win or Loss will not affect us. We are happy with all your achievements."

What is happening???? Kohali seems to be dreaming about all this. West Indies Dramatically out of the tournament. First of all amazed to see tri-nation tournament being played after the beautifully organized Champions Trophy. It was rather boring than continuing One-day format. Indian team was bit relaxed in early stages. But they picked up as soon as they realized that they have to show the world that they are real Champions of Champions. And this would be proving point for them. Dhoni is leading from background. which is visible. Kohli is a master of handling aggressive attacks. This would help him to handle big teams like South Africa and England at their home. Sri lanka has been patchy in their approach in this season. They need to find more intelligent captain than Mathews. He looks pathetic when he is handling Ex-captains. May be its time to Sanga-Mahela to come out of captaincy mode and play normally.

Its time to Cash on for KOHLI-Dhoni And Co.

All the best to Team India!!
