Big Picture

"Another wicket" read a placard in the stands at Providence on Sunday. The message might have been banal, but the fan got what he asked for regularly in the first ODI as the batting frailties of the two teams were once again exposed. In mitigation, the track aided both the spinners and the quicks, and Misbah-ul-Haq went on to call it one of the toughest he has ever played on.

Still, in Pakistan's last 10 ODIs, only once has the score touched 100 with less than three wickets down, and that one time came against lightweights Ireland. Pakistan fielded a new-look batting order in the first ODI but the scorecard still had an all-too-familiar look midway through the innings.

West Indies have faced similar problems, and it is only the home series against Zimbabwe that provides some respectability to the stats of several batsmen. All the big names, so sought after in Twenty20 leagues around the world, have floundered in ODIs this year - not one among Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard have averaged even 25 in 2013. What's more, the only batsman they have in the squad to replace someone in the XI is Devon Smith, who has two ducks in his only ODIs in the past fortnight.

More than any careful innings construction over 50 overs, West Indies seem to hope for one of their outrageously talented batsmen to pull off a special performance, like the returning Shahid Afridi did for Pakistan in the first match. The need for a stabiliser in the midst of the array of volatile hitters remains pressing, but the batsman to fill that role remains elusive. Tuesday's game will be played on the same track as Sunday's, which means the batsmen are set for another difficult day.

Unlike the past couple of weeks in the Caribbean, though, the forecast is for a mostly sunny day on Tuesday. Another change from the first game is that the DRS is expected to be in place, with Hawk-Eye and Ultramotion.

In the spotlight

Shahid Afridi turned in one of the great one-day performances in his comeback game on Sunday, the sort of magical effort hardly any other player can conjure. His loyal and vocal fans are quick to highlight these peaks, but there are a equal number of doubters who point to Afridi's infuriating inconsistency. Expecting steady reliability from Afridi is unfair, but the time has come for him to show that these crests won't be followed by extended troughs.

Sunil Narine is the world's top-ranked ODI bowler. Yet, in his previous two ODIs, he hasn't been anywhere near bowling his full quota of overs. Against Pakistan, on a track with plenty of juice in it, he was taken apart by Afridi, and was used for only three overs. Just three overs from a specialist bowler? Time to bring back some of that early mystery which brought him such success.

Team news

Pakistan made a raft of changes to their side before the first ODI, so it is unlikely they will shuffle the side much ahead of this game. Fast bowler Junaid Khan and batsman Umar Amin are two players who will be hoping to get a look-in.

Pakistan: (probable) 1 Nasir Jamshed, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Asad Shafiq, 6 Umar Akmal (wk), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Wahab Riaz, 9 Asad Ali, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad Irfan

It may have been a humiliating defeat for West Indies on Sunday, but they don't have too many options in the squad.

West Indies: (probable) 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Johnson Charles (wk), 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Lendl Simmons, 5 Marlon Samuels, 6 Dwayne Bravo (capt), 7 Kieron Pollard, 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Kemar Roach/Tino Best, 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Jason Holder

Stats and trivia

  • Shahid Afridi now has 30 ODI Man-of-the-Match awards, equal with Aravinda de Silva and Brian Lara*. If he gets two more, the only players ahead of him will be Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya
  • West Indies are Misbah-ul-Haq's favourite opposition - he averages 79.33 against them in 11 ODIs
  • In bilateral series between Pakistan and West Indies, no team which won the first ODI has lost the series

July 15 6.30pm GMT This stat has now been corrected

don't read too much into Afridi's just one game boom boom. His past 16 years of consistently inconsistent and mostly flopped bating can't be washed over by just one match winning inning. What we really need is stability and realibility; the two qualities Afridi was born without.

Posted by   on (July 16, 2013, 13:48 GMT)

he had an amazing extended run in bowling from 09-'11.... he was also pak's top scorer in 2010 and 2011....

the inconsistency bit is related only to his batting (which he stopped concntrating on since '09 ....if not even earlier during Woolmer's days)

and his bowling been out of sorts before the last match...

I think it's better for haffez to takes some rest and give chance to aris shohil and some other who's inform and show some thing good which is better for Pakistan team....!

I only wish Misbah-ul-haq is out of Pakistan squad. He doesn't play like captains.

Posted by android_user on (July 16, 2013, 13:11 GMT)

umar akmal should be given a consistent run at number 3.

Posted by WeeBee on (July 16, 2013, 12:58 GMT)

Ahmad Shahzad and Umar Akmal should make runs today and Junaid should be given a chance.

Posted by YGSEETHARAM on (July 16, 2013, 12:43 GMT)

Surprised that Dwayne Smith - a terrific batsman, is not in the West Indies team. Hope he is not injured

Posted by Huzaifaa on (July 16, 2013, 12:35 GMT)

Welldone Pakistan in the first ODI but this happens only due to the brilient performance of Afidi. Pakistan should also work on the top order inpite of win... I think Pak should open with Ahmad and Hafeez and give chance to Haris Sohail on account of Jamshaid as Jamshaid, i think can not play for years for Pakistan due to his fitness. So, we should give chance to the youngster. Asad shafiq should be the permanent member at No. 3.

a decision match today if afridi show his consistency then definitely he can through out hafeez from next series and abdul razzaq will be ist choice.i wish afridi show solidity and determination in this match which is going to play today

Shahid Aafridi is no god. Thats for sure. He has had his fair share ups and downs. But he is the only player in the history of the game to hold more records than anyone else, including getting a 50 and 5 wickets in the same match 3 times. Had it been any other player yes agreed would have been dropped like a hot potato by the fans. But its a fact...Shahid Khan Aafridi is the one player in the Pakistani side who is looked up to by players and fans the most. He might be a gamble....but be it his day...he is a one man demolition squad in himself. Its a fact.

West Indies top batsmen bat as if they are playing local club cricket..little boys cricket.school cricket....

Batting for Gayle( except for century),Samuel, Pollard,Smith, Sammy.... is aweful since Champions matches.

Batsmen seem intimidated by classy pace ( speed, accuracy & movement,) They seem confused not knowing how to react or respond in the short reaction time... They seem handicapped ..unable to handle the wiles of Ajmal. looks like humiliation for WI....

Posted by reality_check on (July 16, 2013, 11:28 GMT)

Same Afridi who is now being put on the throne for his first ODI heroics by the Pakistani fans will be dropped like a brick the moment he loses his brain and gets out within first three balls he faces.

Pakistan zindabad

Posted by android_user on (July 16, 2013, 11:10 GMT)

I think they should give chance to hamad azam who is the best a rounder instead of Asad Ali and should throughout hafeez from the team because he is only thinking about is captaincy which shows a lot in matches. Pakistan selecters should also take suggestions from shoaib aktar and Imran Khan.

Pakistan selctors should have choosed afridi in icc champions trophy, They are completely out of mind.. glad to see afridi batting and bowling except against sri lanka.

The way I see this Windies need to rest or drop GAYLE, POLLARD, SIMMONS, SMITH and BEST in order to lift the team. These batsmen are woefully out of form in ODI's and Best has found it difficult to maintain a consistent line & length that is effective in this format. In their place Windies selectors can recruit skillful and/or experienced players like K. EDWARDS (opener), K. LESPORIS (middle order), J. CARTER (all-rounder),S. CHANDERPAUL(if available) or DEONARINE, JOHNSON (left-arm seamer), CUMMINS (seamer) and ASHLEY NURSE (excellent off- spinner, very economical in all formats played). Nurse just this year almost singlehandedly destroyed the Winwards batting in 4-day semi final in Dominica. These guys would bring new life and vibrancy to Windies team and add quality as well. The question is : DOES THE PRESENT GROUP OF SELECTORS HAVE THE COURAGE OR VISION TO MAKE THOSE CHANGES ?? Lets hope so because otherwise this team will continue to struggle against serious opposition.

Posted by Solid_Snake on (July 16, 2013, 10:40 GMT)

India_boy->1 heroics out of 100? I cant even count how many times he has flattened the opponent bowlers with his batting.Do i have to remind that 45 balls Century which gave him the title of 'boom boom'? Do you even know how many times he has got a 5 wicket haul in ODI's? Do you know how many times he has been awarded mom & Man of the series? Come with facts & then we'll talk..All you've got is that 'Afridi has got an Avg of 23 so he is a mediocre allrounder'.

Posted by   on (July 16, 2013, 10:34 GMT)

I think rest of the Pak team that played in last match is good. But selectors are not doing justice with Junaid Khan. He is a gem, the way selectors are dealing with him he might loss his confidence ... and this will hurt Pakistan in future.

Posted by   on (July 16, 2013, 10:32 GMT)

WI should make Sammy as captain. He is a cool player. Although he is not a very good bowler but he can bat under pressure and get some runs in the lower order. You need someone who can bat under pressure. I guess Pollard should be sent as a pinch hitter, he is just useless in the middle order.

where is shivnarine chanderpaul?ok ok west indies want t o lose............. so they can fired the coach...

Posted by Dannymania on (July 16, 2013, 10:29 GMT)

Ok, lets go through the pakistani batting order. Nasir Jamshed is a good batsman, but he needs to perform against an opposition other than india. Ahmad Shehzad has to perform in international matches to show everyone his talent. Its not enough to perform in the domestic cricket only. M.Hafeez should drop down the order, obviously because he is not a good enough batsman technically, to be able to perform with the bat & give the pakistani team the much awaited All-rounder. Misbah ul Haq is a batsman like Sir Boycott, thats enough said. Asad Shafiq is a good batsman but is not talented enough to perform in all the matches. Umar Akmal is probably pakistan's best batsman right now, and WILL perform soon. After that, its all bowlers who almost always do their job. Afridi, Riaz, Irfan & ajmal. Moral of the story: We need some talented batsmen in our line up or we lose most matches. Especially on the bigger platforms.

in my openion pakistan team have strongest bowling attack in the world. but there is always problem with their batting department, if pakistan need replacement of Inzi, Yousef and Younus they should use Azhar Ali on no.3 Asad Shafiq no.4 and Umar Akmal on no.5 Nasir Jamshed & Ahmed Shehzad should open the inings no.6 Shahid Afridi and no.7 Hammad Azam replacement of Abdul Razzaq. so my playing 11 for the World Cup 2015 is. 1.Nasir jamshed 2. Ahmed Shehzad 3. Azhar Ali 4. Asad Shafiq 5. Umar Akmal 6. Shahid Afridi 7. Hammad Azam 8. Umar Gul 9. Saeed Ajmal 10. Junaid Khan 11. Mohammed Irfan. and for the World T20 2014 should be 1. Nasir Jamshed 2. Ahmed Shehzad 3. Rameez Raja Jr. 4. Umar Akmal 5. Haris Sohail 6. Shahid Afridi 7. Hammad Azam 8.Umar Gul 9. Wahab Riaz 10. Saeed Ajmal 11. Junaid Khan.

This is the major problem here, Ind must realise that people like "any bowler in India team" do more harm than good.

Posted by Muttee on (July 16, 2013, 10:21 GMT)

A country's continuing tradition is influenced by kind of heroes it produces; kind of heroes its kids want2emulate. Ishant Sharma/Parveen Kumar/Ifran Pathan/Yadav (and the endless list goes on),despite all their heroics (if any at all),will remain below mediocre bowlers, the kinds of which come good once in 10 years. The problem with Ind bowling is that these so-called bowlers are an idol in their country and kids learning cricket want to grow up becoming like them. No wonder there are no good bowlers in the team looking to get wickets or stop the run flow. In Pakistan, kids playing cricket want to become Wasim, Waqar, Akhtar, Gul, Irfan, Jun & when they take just 5 wickets in school game, they r mocked, u want to become the great Ws, or the speedster like this? U r not good enough to play4your street team, forget Team Pak. In India I can imagine when a kid gets a wicket after getting hit for a 100 runs, others must be cheering him "YAY, Here comes our next Ishant or Zaheer..

pakistan has some exiting young players for this series and has a good combination of youth and experience. but i think they lack depth in their batting, which in the past was given by players like Razzaq, Azhar, and wasim . the selectors should be serious about players like Hammad azam, i mean he is a gem , why is he not playing in the team? the team is in serious need of good allrounders down the order, who can get some quick runs, especially when misbah ruins a lot of balls for nothing. And one more thing misbah should understand the importance of good strike these days. i mean by blocking a lot of balls he creats a lot of pressur, and the players batting with him usually falls to that pressure. i mean he is the senior pro he should lead the way like other seniours.

Posted by android_user on (July 16, 2013, 10:07 GMT)

as I read all comments. . I think u people r really sick.. we don't need to give any other chance to hafeez in this series. . he continuesly do the same things.. we hv to replace him with hammad azam... we hv to give another chance to asad shafiq .

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (July 16, 2013, 10:00 GMT)

India_boy! You should calm down with the comments you made about afridi being an average all rounder. You guys are really good at that, I can say a lot about Tendulkar as well but I won't because that's not who we are. Afridi is and will always be among the greats of cricket. He's a match winner, his performance in the past was always hindered by the PCB management and still is, it's not easy for a player to be in and out and perform the way he does. He holds many world records therefore he's unique in his own style. Razzaq and Afridi are the two all rounders, the teams would love to have on their side including India. They are the only two players who can play any position and be lethal. Check the stats before you make comments. Afridi is our hero, just like your have a few players as yours. Thanks!

Posted by saadrasheedarain on (July 16, 2013, 9:55 GMT)

Hafeez should be be out of the team Enough is enough his attitude and batting style is no become destructive for the hole team.Let him push back to nets for for basics.

Posted by SamWintson92 on (July 16, 2013, 9:47 GMT)

My teams for 2nd ODI: WI XI: 1 Gayle 2 Charles (WK) 3 Darren Bravo 4 Samuels 5 Pollard 6 Simmons 7 Dwayne Bravo (C) 8 Sammy 9 Narine 10 Roach 11 Holder. PAK XI: 1 Jamshed 2 Shehzad 3 Haris 4 Misbah (C) 5 U Akmal (WK) 6 Afridi 7 Hafeez 8 Wahab 9 Ajmal 10 Junaid 11 Irfan.

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (July 16, 2013, 9:42 GMT)

Drop Ajmal and get Haris Sohail in. Hafeez and Afridi are 2 top quality spinners. Pakistan has enough bowlers- most of them world class. So- why play an extra spinner, especially when the batting is so weak? To get the right balance, Pakistan need to play 6 batsmen, 3 pacers plus Hafeez and Afridi. They should rethink about this only when their bowling fails.

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (July 16, 2013, 9:38 GMT)

This is series I believe will be test of character for the young batsmen of Pakistan. Nasir Jamshed, Umar Akmal, Ahmed Shehzad, Umar Amin, Haris Sohail need to make maximum of the each opportunity given from now on to the end of the series. They need to step up to make Pakistan Team be a formidable force not only with bowling but also with batting. If PCB building the team for World Cup 2015 they need to have charismatic but technically and mentally sound batsmen on there squad who can hold on to there own as they need to play in Australia and Newzealand. Remember people, Pakistan won 1992 World Cup in Australia. So, it's second chance for them to relive the glory one more time.

Posted by   on (July 16, 2013, 9:36 GMT)

I m little surprised that people are asking for umer amin, he is average player, Haris Sohail is for better player and he deserves a place in 11. In my view pakistani xi in near future should be; 1- Nasir jamshed 2- Ahmad shahzad 3- sohaib maqsood (telented crickter) 4- umer akmal 5- haris sohail 6-Hafeez 7- Afridi 8- wahab/junaid 9- ajmal 10-asad ali 11- irfan

Captain should be afridi, until another one emerges as captain talent

Posted by android_user on (July 16, 2013, 9:28 GMT)

Batting is d main problem for both teams. that team will win if their batdmen perform well as well as their ballers.

Posted by android_user on (July 16, 2013, 9:16 GMT)

how can u say that misbah shuld play test cricket... he is leading the team in a gud manner... top order is not playing well.. he has to play slow odrwis it would b imposibl to set a defendable target with a stronge bowling attack.... hafeez is not going well at all.. but v dont have odr option....

Posted by android_user on (July 16, 2013, 9:13 GMT)

afridi is not going to perform with the bat for the rest of the series. thats how he goes one good inning and wait for 6 month before he put somthing on show.

Posted by   on (July 16, 2013, 9:09 GMT)

It is interesting a fellow commentator here should ask about Powell. I am WI and I have to say, like so many avid supporters, I often suffer from selection amnesia. There are so many rapid, sometimes erratic changes in the Windies camp as to be convinced of delusion. Where are these players: Dwayne Smith Nikita Miller Ronsford Beaton Narsingh Deonarine

and of course

Shiv Chanderpaul

Posted by   on (July 16, 2013, 8:49 GMT)

I totally agree with u India_boy it happens alot in Pakistan and Afridi is not a good role model for youngsters ive seen some youngsters like ahmed shehzad change their game with influence to Afridi and players like Afridi are not dependable as u can see pollard .

Posted by xylofon on (July 16, 2013, 8:05 GMT)

Lets not forget how bad Umar Akmal has been previously although I agree if he is given the chance again he should bat latest at nr 4. If he doesnt perform we have to look at that.

Hafeez, if he doesnt perform today and didnt perform the whole SA series and not in C trophy then what good is he?

Misbah, please. Just choose test cricket PLEASE.

And my eternal complaint: Haris Sohail, M Rizwan and Umar Amin must be given the chance at a good position on the playing eleven, up the order.

Posted by android_user on (July 16, 2013, 7:31 GMT)

Batting has been a major concern for Pakistan. The PCB tried to adapt the Australian way by axing the players not performing in a series or two and replacing experience with youth. But the Australian grass root level is very strong thats why they have a back up for every player. Pakistan needs to give some more games to their experienced players to get back in form. We have quality batsmen. Now we just need to groom them into believing they are match winners. And above all, just as it was so clear in the first game. Pakistan enjoyed their cricket. They just need to put their heart and soul into it. Shahid Aafridi is the biggest example of the statement...It takes one game to get back in form. Just believe and give it all. Pakistan Zindabad.

W.Indies needs new talent, if they want to perform then they have to give rest all the players why only perform in IPL.

Pakistan should give a chance to Haris Shoail. he is talented and energetic cricketer.

"Where that guy Powell has gone?He has solid technique and better attitude. He should be included in the team,he can be your no.4 for euture and even work as an opener!".......

"Make Hafiz to play lower down the order and let Umar Akmal at no. 3 he can proove worth for Pak but for GOD sake plz let him play you have given so many chances to Kamran and Shoaib Malik. So plz give him too and trust me he will be your future. As far as Afridi is concerned yeah he is a match winner no doubt he bring the required passion and exhillration in the team...........Best Of Luck Pak.....Being an Indian I want our neighbour a great power in Ckt as it was before!".............

Posted by   on (July 16, 2013, 5:34 GMT)

Again a waste of talent by Pakistan team .... there is no way we can waste Umar Akmal at 6 ... he needs to play a number 3 or 4.....he and jamshed are one the best ODI batsman that we have in our current squad and you can not waste Umar by playing him at 6 !!

Also Junaid should be drafted in if he is fit and Asad Ali should be preferred over Wahab Riaz as Asad can swing the ball both ways and he is very skidy and can surprise the batsman. As far as whab is cncrnd , he is an avg bowler and needs to develop an in swinger for RHB !!!

For hafeez , i beleive he is a utility cricketer so you cannot drop him but i believe if he does not perform in this series , he should be given some rest/break and we should try him at number 6 in this series and see if he can be of some good use

Asad is a technically sound and deserves more chances

MY 11 for the match wud be as under:

1) Jamshed 2) Ahmed Shahzad 3) Umar 4) Asad 5) Misbah 6) Hafeez 7) Afridi 8)Ajmal 9)Asad Ali 10) Junaid Khan 11) Irfan

Posted by IAS2009 on (July 16, 2013, 5:28 GMT)

afridi is match winner no doubt about it, 30 odi MOM is great achievement, but what stat not tell is how many times due to his reckless batting Pakistan has lost games, the kind of talent he is, far better expected from him with his experience level, he need to guide the juniors also, the reason to drop him is that he should not take his place for granted at least that what people thinks the way he bats. he is still the most valuable player in team and better than anyone in current squad if he is at the top of his game like he was in first ODI.

Posted by asim229 on (July 16, 2013, 4:49 GMT)

I think saeed ajmal and afridi are the only superstars left in this team and hafeez and misbah are the most selfish players and captains. I know misbah fans wont like it but if he was sincere with the team he would have batted at 3 just like imran in 92 and razzaq 99 bcse misbah is a good blocker. But he comes to bat at 5when ball is old and ballers are tired so that he can make 50. to me any selfish player can do it and same with hafeez when captain.

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (July 16, 2013, 4:48 GMT)

Pakistan managment has given chance to young talent while dropping kamran, malik, farhat out of the team.I wish that they would do this in futire beacause of selection of moin khan as our national team selector.Besides they should change batting order which is proving desatrous for the team as we have seen such example in champions throphy.Misbah can play at 4th while umer akmal at 3 and hafeez should bat at 6th spot.

Posted by alipk52 on (July 16, 2013, 4:25 GMT)

Why the hell they took out our young brilliant bowler Junnaid khan and brought uncapable bowler Asad into team? have they lost it? now this is mistake they did with batting when jamshed-hafeez opening pair doing well and our selectors change it and brought back our old opening crisis, now they have changed opening bowling pair as well despite they are doing well consistantly, get a life change wahab riaz and bring passionate bowler like Anwar Ali instead of taking out our perfect bowler junnaid, i really don't like to allow our current selectors to think themselves as owner of Pakistan cricket, com'on Moin, you'll change it.

Posted by   on (July 16, 2013, 4:09 GMT)

A stabilizer batsman is chanderpaul that we the fans are weary to see the selectors not playing also narsingh deonarine and Brendan Nash , no but the senseless selectors continue to persist with pollard , Devon smith and Darren bravo . Their are players out there but the selectors aren't doing the right thing .

Posted by android_user on (July 16, 2013, 3:30 GMT)

it means with out afridi the rest of the team is useless. if afridi's performence of quick 76 runs and 7 wickets for 12 runs is taken out we can loss the match as we lost the three back to back matches in champions trophy. the total would be 150 around and they would have chased it for 3 wicket lost. so such experienced players like afridi, younas khan, abdul razaq must be a part of the team. thank u for reading.

Posted by   on (July 16, 2013, 3:10 GMT)

there is no way to keep hafeez in the squad, recently he has not yet performed and creating a pressure on others, misbah should bat at number 4 regardless need amin or shafiq to bat at number 3. Both haffez and u akmal are not suitable for one down position

Pakistan should keep the same team as the saying never change a winning side. Also I find it farcical that the DRS system was not in use for the 1st game due to the fact they were ynable to get the technology ready in time how incompetent can some people be. With the use of DRS Jamshed would have been able to overturn his shocking LBW while Akmal would have been given out on review bith decisions were made by the local umpire. Thankfully Afridi was able to produce another masterclass hence making the decisions not costly.

Until the WI coach and selectors use common sense and bring in back the current best batsman in the Caribbean - Shiv Chanderpaul, WI won't be on the winning ways in 50 overs cricket. The many all rounders only suit the 20/20 format

Posted by Zahidsaltin on (July 16, 2013, 2:26 GMT)

GOING by the history, Afridi's innings was something which comes every 50th innings and we should not just forget the failures of our top order. Pakistan batting is failing again and againg and the culprits are the same players each time. HARIS SOHAIL must be added in place of Asad Shafiq and Hafiz must be played down the order to give him some last chances and that too due to his bowling. It is time that Nasir Jamshed too gets a break to do some thinking. We must not let them hang on indefinitly when they do not perform even the half of what is required of top order batsmen of other cricket nations.

Posted by WindiesWillow on (July 16, 2013, 2:23 GMT)

Pollard should be dropped for a while.....not forever, but for a while because he's clearly out of form. He should then be replaced by the younger version of Chanderpaul (Narsingh Deonarine). Deonarine being Guyanese as well will augur good for WI on this pitch. Also he is a decent part time spinner should one be needed.

Funny that the author should mention Devon Smith as the only back up. Have we forgotten what Hafeez did to him on the last tour of the Caribbean?

Posted by riz309 on (July 16, 2013, 2:01 GMT)

I see lot's of people talking about dropping Shafiq i urge the management to let him play the whole series and then aneylise his performance it's been a while that Pakistan is unable to produce a solid start so in my opinion Hafeez needs to be dropped Pakistan can do well without his pathetic 26 odi ave. and introduce either H.Sohail,H.Azam and give them some matches in this series Pakistan's problem is batting so it's time to try these youngsters.

Posted by mshyder on (July 16, 2013, 1:31 GMT)

The Pakistan Coach and Captain will have to be more aggressive. Bring Haris Sohail in at No 3, make Hafeez bat at 5, drop shafiq and wahab ( if you think Wahab can be an all rounder you are sadly mistaken) and bring Junaid in his place. My team would be 1.Nasir 2.Shahzad 3.Haris 4.Misbah 5.Hafeez 6.Umer 7.Afridi 8.Asad Ali 9.Saeed 10.Junaid 11.Irfan.

Posted by psu19976 on (July 16, 2013, 1:22 GMT)

pak should play 6 specialist batmen and 5 bowlers. Afridi and Hafeez should play as bowlers.

Posted by somethingdifferent on (July 16, 2013, 1:19 GMT)

It was a superb performance by Afridi. But fans like Saad Salim and others plz don't get carried away with the statement about number of Player of the Match awards. Other than these awards Afridi is no match to these legends. He is in no comparison in runs scored, averages, number of centuries and half centuries with these players. Afridi is extremely talented but highly inconsistent player who would have been dropped within one year of his debut had he been in any other country and people would have even forgot he ever existed by now. So he and his fans should be grateful to Pakistan. Cricinfo plz print.

Actually, I would prefer an opening stand of Ahmed Shahzad and Shazaib Hassan -an excellent and game changing fielder. Both should be given an extended run of at least 25 ODI's but then we all know this is bit too much far sighted for PCB. Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali are future of Pakistan Test team and should be preserved with that only. I am not too sold on Umar Amin just yet and rather have Fawad Alam who is an excellent player of rotating strike. To answer critics about Hafeez - Once you are dropped as an opener, you become vulnerable to be dropped altogether. Considering he is their T20 captain - they are reluctant to drop him down the order further knowing he just might lose his spot and that will create another situation of it's own so I think he should be given bit more time.

Posted by Kaka_saab on (July 16, 2013, 0:31 GMT)

I'd like pointout my point of view. 1. Drop ahmed shahzad b'coz he's waste of time. 2. Hafeez replace with haris sohail. 3. Given more chances to asad shafiq. He has solid bat. 4. Add m.Rizwan and umar akmal play with only bat. If pak goes with u.akmal as keeper we will pay the price atleast in 1 match. 5. Afridi come on as opener. If he clik then pak team make sure 70 to 80 runs in first 10 overs. If he fail, no metter he will join our others openers. 6. Junaid comes in for wahab riaz. Wahab riaz and umar gul have same problem that they given lots of runs in do or die matches. My playing XI. 1.nasir 2. Afridi 3. Umar akmal 4. Asad shafiq 5. Misbah 6. Haris sohail 7. M rizwan 8. Ajmal 9. Junaid 10. Asad ali 11. M irfan .(note). Haris sohail comes down order b'coz he's hitter of the ball which we need in the last 10 overs.

Windies need to drop Dwayne Bravo & Pollard ... and bring in a specialist bowler & a specialist batsman (& I don't mean Devon Smith). & can anyone tell me why isn't Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the team ???

Posted by TeamSelector on (July 16, 2013, 0:23 GMT)

Pakistan need to make three changes. Drop Shafiq, Wahab & Ali & bring in Haris, Amin & Junaid. Hafeez will play as a bowler, while Amin will the 'Hafeez role' as an all rounder & strengthen the batting. 1-Shehzad, 2-Jamshed, 3-Haris, 4-Misbah, 5-Amin, 6-Akmal, 7-Afridi, 8-Hafeez, 9-Ajmal, 10-Junaid, 11-Irfan.

Posted by   on (July 16, 2013, 0:01 GMT)

Selection of Asad Ali over Junaid Khan was "Shocking" for me. They won it easily thanks to our "Lala" but selecting Asad Ali over Junaid khan is silly .. I hope they do make a Change for today's game and Bring Junaid Khan back ...

Posted by roook on (July 15, 2013, 23:48 GMT)

Pakistan should select their top domestic players and build a good A squad. The idea is to test test young players on foreign pitches.Through this selector has better idea of which players can perform other then only on home pitches rather then wasting talent on side benches. India, South Africa, Aussies all major team have built up their A squads. India has sent their A squad to zimbadwe ahead of their tour. Similarly South Africa has sent their A sqaud to Srilanka. Hafeez, Afridi, Asad Shafiq are match winner but are seriously inconsistant and are not reliable players. To create replacement we need to built A Squad there is no way to ignore facts

I know this might be off-topic, but cant help myself when i read "that one time came against lightweights Ireland". To be honest with you , most my freinds including my self dont consider Ireland "lightweights" at all. As a Pakistani fan i have immense respect for their abilities.

Posted by android_user on (July 15, 2013, 23:20 GMT)

Wahab Riaz is the weekest link. Asad Shafiq and Umar Amin are both made for test cricket just as Azhar Ali. So now captain should play Haris Sohail instead og Wahab, Hammad Azam instead of Asad Shafiq and give last chance to Moh Hafeez. God bless pak cricket.

Posted by ahtasham.rvj on (July 15, 2013, 22:56 GMT)

I dont understand what is hafeez doing in the team...He lacks the technique to play the swinging ball...neither should there be Asad Shafiq as he is a test player...he has sound technique but he is unsuitable for ODIS..he should be replaced by either Haris sohail or Umer amin...And if hafeez is to play he should play at no. 6..Asad ali is a fine bowler..he needs to be given more chances...Besides Pakistan is finding an allrounder in wahab riaz which ofcourse he is not...he should be replace with Hammad Azam ( (An allrounder)..The best pakistan team should be like that....and Misbah should promote himself up the order.. 1..Nasir jamshed 2..Ahmad Shazad 3..misbah 4..Haris Sohail 5..Umer Akmal 6..Umer Amin/Hafeez 7..Afridi 8..Hammad Azam 9..Junaid/Asad Ali 10..Saeed Ajmal 11..Irfan... ....And Stick with this team..They would surely produce results..

There is some seam movement that Junaid Khan can utilise at Providence. Junaid is quick can seams it both ways. Is he not a first pick?

Asad Shafiq for me is only a test batsmen as he bats slowly and is fragile in ODIs. Try a new lad like Harris Sohail or Amin. Shafiq is a burden. 230 is a par score on this wicket and Pakistan can defend a total like that on a bowling wicket easily if Gayle, Charles and Pollard a dismissed early. It is getting the runs that is difficult. My XI consists of : Jamshed, Shehzad, Harris Sohail, Misbah, U.Akmal, Hafeez, Afridi, Wahab Riaz/ Asad Ali, Ajmal, Junaid, `irfan.

Hafeez has been out of sorts so I think demoting him down the order or replacing him until he finds form is a possible strategy. However he could perform better if stays batting at 3. Good luck Pakistan.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 22:22 GMT)

All those saying why Junaid was dropped here is the answer- A part of rotation policy of fast bowlers. They are trying new bowelrs.

Posted by android_user on (July 15, 2013, 22:21 GMT)

1.irfan 2. ajmal 3. asad ali 4.afridi 5.akmal 6.hafeez 7.jamshed 8.harris 9. shahzad 10.riaz 11.the best tuk tuk MUL but his still good

Posted by android_user on (July 15, 2013, 22:17 GMT)

i think pakistan should send irfan n ajmal opening batting cuz thy made mre runz than top order batsmans n asad ali third but i think openers will ply all the over themselves n mke around 300runz

Pollard need to be replaced by batsman Tino Best

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 21:47 GMT)

Pakistanis are inconsistent but i hope that top order clicks. I have been waiting too long for this to happen but this pleasure has not yet been provided by Hafeez ,and Ahmed. In my opinion Nasir has been pretty much upto the task. Hafeez is disappointing his fans quite professionally. My advice to Professor is that he is over analysing his batting, he should come out of that shell of "professor" and needs to be an opener.Good luck

Posted by DurtyWurk on (July 15, 2013, 21:14 GMT)

I can't for the life of me seem to understand why they picked Asad Ali over Junaid Khan this past Sunday. Junaid Khan is an excellent talent and must be brought in for tomorrow's game. He has the potential of dismantling any batting attack and must be given time to perfect his game.

As for our batting.. only god knows.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 21:02 GMT)

I think this second ODI or maybe the series as a whole(If he plays all the matches) will be the last chance for Mohammed Hafeez as he is an aggressive batsman who can provide a solid start. However, He has not been among the runs of late and he can't put any excuse for that. I don't get the fact that Pakistan are on the defensive and WI will be keen to attack this. They should play cautiously and play late, punish some loose balls, and take singles to keep the scoreboard ticking over, They need to be quick between the wickets. The pitch is unpredictable and so are the teams, You can't always rely on Misbah and the bowlers. I would like to see Umar Amin and Haris Sohail in the Squad, They're good for the FORMAT. Asad Shafiq should be dropped and so should Hafeez. My Squad would be 1. Ahmed Shehzad 2. Nasir Jamshed 3. Haris Sohail 4. Umar Amin 5. Misbah Ul Haq(C) 6. Umar Akmal(wk) 7. Shahid Afridi 8. Wahab Riaz 9. Saeed Ajmal 10. Asad Ali 11. Mohammed Irfan

Posted by SaadRocx on (July 15, 2013, 21:00 GMT)

Harris Sohail in for Asad Shafiq (Shafiq is a test batsman for God's sake, don't spoil his technique) and Junaid Khan in for Wahab.. (Asad Ali is a good bowler he'll prove..) Wahab is wayy too much wavid and can't bring the bowl back in...which is a major concern..

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 20:39 GMT)

1) Nasir Jamshed 2) Ahmed Shehzad 3) Umar Akmal 4) Misbah-Ul-Haq 5) Haris Sohail 6) Mohammad Hafeez 7) Shahid Afridi 8) Wahab Riaz 9) Saeed Ajmal 10) Junaid Khan 11) Mohammed Irfan

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 20:35 GMT)

This statement says enough about Shahid Afridi as a player. Equal amount of match winning performances with Aravinda de Silva and Brian Lara, and 2 short of retired players Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya. His is truly a mega superstar in the game, and has not been given the credit that he truly deserves. Had he been from another international team other than Pakistan he would have been considered one of the all-time greats by now, and NEVER dropped from an international side! I hope we allow Afridi to play as much cricket as possible and let the cricket fans enjoy one of the most legendary careers ever.

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (July 15, 2013, 20:32 GMT)

I agree batting order needs shuffling, as for now there is no consistency at all. Umar Akmal should come in at no.3 and Misbah should bat after Afridi.

If things keep the same I would experiment with opening with Afridi to freshen up the batting line up. Afridi is a gamble batsman anyway why not add excitement to the brand name.

Abdul Razzaq also deserves a place at least in the 15 squad, he is a match winner .

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 20:30 GMT)

Hafeez should come down the order. i dont know why he or team managment insisting on top positions. he is no3 but infact he is almost an opener as our 1st wicket out in 1st 2-3 overs in last few games.i am sure he will do better on no 6. he should do something in this series otherwise i think they should drop him for some time. drop often helps player. afridi was dropped and came back with a bang.

yes agreed, afridi may not be that consistent in batting. i hope last innings was not like many in past where 1 big innings followed by plenty poor ones. we need some consistency from him. not 50 every game but some runs like 30-40 will do.

Haris should play instead of asad shafiq. he is been selected on many series but havent made it in 11. Asad is good but we have to see what haris has to offer.

Posted by Riddymon on (July 15, 2013, 20:28 GMT)

Bravo needs to use his brain in this next game. At least make sure Sammy bowls out his overs. West indies also need to keep pressure applied in the bowling department for the entire innings like what Pakistan did. They plucked out 4 wickets and then let afridi explode and build up the score to something that they would've had a hard time chasing regardless. Misbah is a non-factor in all of this as though his average is high vs. the windies, he takes so long make his runs that we should be able to take wickets around him. Windies..use your brain, pull your thumbs out, concentrate and STOP EMBARRASSING YOURSELVES. The rest of the world sees your potential to become number one, why can't you?

Posted by Stark62 on (July 15, 2013, 20:00 GMT)

I don't think Pak's batting should be a concern but rather, the batting order!!

Hafeez is applying a lot pressure on the guys below him and needs to bat at number 6. Misbah can't bat at no. 4 because of his sluggish batting, hence his role should be to come in at 3, to see off the swinging ball or come in at 5, to insure that Pak play out the full 50 overs.

Whatever the batting order, Umar needs to be promoted to no. 3 or 4 in the batting line up and must be persisted with at that spot because he has the ability to fast bowling well and shouldn't be treated as slogger at no. 6.

Nasir, Shezhad, Harris and then Umar @ 4, followed Misbah is perfect.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 19:50 GMT)

Asad Shafiq had enough chances. Give the new kid a chance, Harris Sohail.

Posted by Balb on (July 15, 2013, 19:44 GMT)

If Dave Cameron doesn't step in or some influential people like Tony Cozier, Viv Richards etc, I see West Indies go down in this series.

West Indies need to take a serious look at the result of the recent concluded regional games and find players to replace the regions twenty/20 players who occupy spots in this present ODI team. I mean the non-performers. How or what would it take to make those serious decisions. Two guys Devon Smith and Sarwan failed consecutively in two games and were dropped. Ramdin was dropped even though he is the best keeper in all formats.

Why is West Indies carrying passengers?

What happened with the successful scorers and wicket takers in the last regional games.

Why not try Powell, Braithwaite, Deonarine and Gabriel? If we lose with these guys, at least we lose with fresh faces rather than to lose again with non performers.

Can anyone rely on this team after the results of the ICC and Tri-series?

Common guys it has to be more than a wake up call.

Posted by android_user on (July 15, 2013, 19:18 GMT)

Though the track was difficult, Hafeez has utterly disappointed at No3. He should bat at number six. Secondly, Asad Shafiq has been tried and tested in the ODI format and he hasn't yet showed any glimpses of performing. Haris Sohail should be given a chance ahead of him. Though Pak won the first ODI, We are talking about the 2 mosy unpredictable teams, all of them are match-winners, all of them are match-loosers. Hoping for a good contest and a tight game unlike the first one!

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 19:06 GMT)

let's turn this around ... Moin Khan as selector ... pick better teams ... performance based retention ... chances for younger players to prove themselves, etc. Need some positivity rather than the same ol same ol ... have some pride.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 19:05 GMT)

i think its time to drop hafeez. Believe me dropping always helps. it will repair his brain that he is not a must pick while showing this misery show with the bat. he is as batsman in the team not as a bowler. if he cant bat at all then its better to replace him with a genuine batsman like azhar ali who can give stability to this brittle batting line up at no 3

Posted by Jda123 on (July 15, 2013, 18:50 GMT)

I would like see Shafiq dropped, he isn't an ODI player and give Harris Sohail a chance if he isn't injured.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 18:39 GMT)

Though misbah batted slow but what he can do ? everytime our batting gets collpsed thanks to afridi but we cant expect consistency from lala our batsman should step up and should take some responsbility and please push hafeez down the order he walays gifts the wicket to the opposition

Posted by Kumail_Asadi on (July 15, 2013, 18:38 GMT)

Every time one man show is not enough. Hafeez, Nasir and Asad must perform in this match. We can't depend on Afridi, in one match he is hero and for 5 matches he will be zero. For this match WI will be favorite.

Posted by Chaudry_Cricket on (July 15, 2013, 18:36 GMT)

If Umar Akmal and Hafeez swap batting places and Asad Shafiq dropped for Haris Sohail. We will be a much stronger unit. Bowling looks great. Intresting to see wheter Junaid will be included although I think Asad Ali should be persisted with.

Overall if we make these 2 changes we will be a tougher batting unit.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 18:35 GMT)

they should bring hafeez down the order bring akmal in at 3 because he is a better batsmen than coming in at 6.. hafeez is struggling and every time we lose a wicket at the top hafeez is next to go.. bring in juniad for asad and haris for shafiq

1 Nasir Jamshed, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Umar Akmal (wk), 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Haris Sohail, 6 Mohammad Hafeez, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Wahab Riaz, 9 junaid khan, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad Irfan
