West Indies Tri-Nation Series - 1st match

West Indies v Sri Lanka

West Indies won by 6 wickets (with 73 balls remaining)

Jayawardene to open with comeback man Tharanga. Roach has the first new ball

9.05 am West Indies win the toss and will bowl

Dwayne Bravo is expecting early help for his fast bowlers and wants early wickets. "No hangover. We accept the defeat," he says of the Champions Trophy exit. Ramdin returns after serving out his two-game ban for wrongfully claiming a catch off Misbah-ul-Haq.

Angelo Mathews: "We would have bowled first as well, wicket looks a bit damp and it is overcast as well." Herath, Mendis and Mendis is the spin attack. No Senanayake, no Kusal Perera, there is already no Dilshan, so there'll be a fresh set of openers for Sri Lanka

It has gone a bit dark indeed as the players warm up

DMX: "So much for Kusal J. Selectors are doing a wonderful job in ruining another young career... Selected him for all the matches in england and now dropped him for Tharanga... I don't know what Sachithra has to do to catch the selectors eye to get a game... I don't think SL selectors are grooming a team for the 2015 WC... Disgusting!"

shihan: "@Abhishek-There is nothing fresh about this openers..its time to do some changes like India did. We want new set of openers..not the ones who tried out already" While I just meant a different pair, shihan, I get you, Sri Lanka need the youth brigade to fire, and not only at the top of the order

Anisch: "Mendis and Mendis, that's like a double barrel gun aimed against the West Indians.."

Sunny: "Kudos to those who made it possible for Chris Gayle to don WI Jersey again. This fella at top of the order gives complete different dimension to WI team."

cameron nurse: "Why the west indies went back to Devon Smith its a mystery to me. How could they chose him at the expense of Dwayne Smith who is three dimensional. So he made a few runs in the domestic league what's the big deal when he is known to be a failure at the higher level all the time. The selectors have to stop going back to known failures they should try a new youngster if they don't want Dwayne Smith who can bat , bowl and is still one of the best fielders and catchers around."

IsaNeil: "I'm pretty sure rain will appear as soon as stumps are placed in the Queens Park Oval. And guess who has tickets..." er, IsaNeil, as long as you have tickets for Sabina Park ...

9 am Hard, not much grass, some cracks, slight moisture and a few small dark patches. No reason why this is not a good pitch to bat first on, says Jeff Dujon

8.55 am According to the forecast, the rain was to have followed the cricket across the Atlantic from England, but for now, it hasn't made an appearance. Which is a momentary relief, you can put up with only so many T20 games in a 50-over tournament

Sundar: "Reminds me of Sharjah in the good ol' 90s. India and/or Pak was mandatory and throw in 1/2 more and there we go. The Miandad last ball six, the defence of 125, Azhar's assault on Ata-ur-Rehman, Kambli's assault on Shane Warne, Sachin against the Aussies in 1998, Zim beating SL twice in 199 for an Ind-Zim Final. Olonga dismissing Sachin in the league phase and Sachin going after Olonga in said final.... Sigh!!!! memories, memories."

Sundar, one of my memories is that of seeing an Australian with a goatee save numerous boundaries against India in one of those games. He seemed to be all over the place, until I realised there were two goatees out there - Stuart Law and Ricky Ponting.

8.40 am The good old ODI tri-series, it still exists, weathering competition from Twenty20 leagues, bilateral tours, and scheduled Test matches. A nip here, a tuck there in the FTP, and the competitors are put in their place.

Five days after the Champions Trophy, here's presenting an old-fashioned one-day tri-nation tournament. Some of these gave us many memorable games in the 90s. This one might as well. West Indies, India and Sri Lanka, all three with full-strength squads, barring the odd injury. Which is why this series could be remembered for more than the circumstances in which it was arranged. Here's the series preview, and here is the match preview for the opening game between West Indies and Sri Lanka. Toss coming up shortly

They have been too adamant in giving the responsibility to Dilshan, Jayawardene and Sangakkara. If you see the recent past, they have won matches only when they have clicked, recent example being of Champions Trophy 2013. The innings ends nine deliveries short, and West Indies end nine minutes above the scheduled close of the innings. Quibbles apart, they would have taken a chase of around 200 after deciding to bowl, and especially after Sri Lanka motored to an opening stand of 62. Narine the trump card again. Rampaul made inroads during the batting Powerplay, after Sammy had tied Sri Lanka down during the middle. Plenty of soft dismissals for the visitors, and no support for the fighting Mathews. Rather poor batting effort
