ICC World Twenty20 - 1st match, Group A

South Africa v West Indies

South Africa won by 8 wickets (with 14 balls remaining)

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the ICC World Twenty20. Today's game is South Africa v West Indies and I'm Anand Vasu, your commentator, and will be calling the game for you with Sriram Veera.

Ramnaresh Sarwan calls heads and the coin lads a tail. South Africa have won the toss and Graeme Smith has chosen to field. He thought it would be easier to bat when the target was known and that the wicket would play true for 40 overs.

It's a new format, a brand new tournament and no-one quite knows what to expect. This will only make the viewing that much more compulsive.

Sarwan admits that he wanted to field first but thought batting first might give the West Indies a chance to put a good score on the board and put the South Africans under pressure.

Before the game gets under way be sure to play our new fantasy game. It's a cracker.

The South African team is as follows: 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 AB de Villiers, 4 Mark Boucher, 5 Justin Kemp, 6 Shaun Pollock, 7 Makhaya Ntini, 8 Albie Morkel, 9 Johan van der wath, 10 Vernon Philander, 11 Morne Morkel. JP Duminy is the 12th man.

West Indies are represented by: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Devon smith, 3 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Denesh Ramdin, 8 Dwayne Smith, 9 Daren Powell, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Fidel Edwards.

Our man at the ground S Rajesh tells me there are still plenty of empty seats. However, local experts have told him it's likely to fill out as the game gets under way.

Rajesh also says: "Plenty of noise around - music blaring through the speakers. The crowd's building up -lots of colour, plenty of kids around. You can see why Twenty20 has caught on like it has"

The teams are walking out onto the field now. The South Africans are first in. They come in behind Daryl Harper and Mark Benson, the two umpires for this match.

Chris Gayle and Devon Smith are the two opening batsmen for West Indies while Shaun Pollock takes the new ball.

Ntini to Gayle, SIX, Huge! Gayle plants his foot down the pitch and heaves the ball over long-on. That is a very big hit from Gayle.

3.6

Ntini to Gayle, SIX, This one is monstrous. Gayle plants his foot down the pitch and tees off. This time it's over long-off and really really big. The ball lands well back in the stands

End of over 4 (13 runs) West Indies 42/0 (RR: 10.50)

6.3

van der Wath to Chanderpaul, FOUR, Outside edge. Lovely lemon cut or French cut as you please. Full and homing in on the off stump, Chanderpaul tries to slice it through point. Instead the ball runs to third man boundary

18.2

van der Wath to Chanderpaul, OUT, Another one goes down. The wickets are suddenly falling in a heap here as West Indies try to hit every ball for a six. Short in length, in the zone outside off, Chanderpaul tries to upper cut it over point but ends up nicking it to Boucher.

S Chanderpaul c †Boucher b van der Wath 11 (21m 10b 1x4 0x6) SR: 110.00

18.3

van der Wath to Ramdin, no run, short and rising, over the off stump, Ramdin backs away to the leg side and fails to connect with his upper cut

18.4

van der Wath to Ramdin, FOUR, Connects with his upper cut this time. A slight shuffle takes him outside leg stump just before the delivery and he carves a short-of-length delivery over point

Latest from HRG. Chris Gayle has hit more sixes (11) than anyone else in Twenty20 cricket. Ricky Ponting, with 9 sixes from four five, was the highest before this game.

18.5

van der Wath to Ramdin, 1 run, fuller this time, on the stumps, driven to long-on

18.6

van der Wath to Sarwan, 3 runs, backs to the leg side even as he charges out and slices a yorker through backward point. One frenetic over left in this innings.

19.1

Philander to Sarwan, no run, full, outside the off stump, he backs away to the leg side but can't put bat to the ball. It landed after it went past the off stump.

19.2

Philander to Sarwan, no run, Another dot ball. This is rare in this format. Yorker on the middle and off and Sarwan could just about jab it back down the track

19.3

Philander to Sarwan, 2 runs, full in length, driven towards long-off and Ramdin calls Sarwan over for the second run and they get there in the end. Just in time. It was refered upstairs, not out was the verdict

19.4

Philander to Sarwan, SIX, A one-handed flat six over point! Welcome to Twenty20! It was a low full toss, just outside the off stump, Sarwan backed away and took the bottom-hand off the handle in an effort to reach the delivery and ended up slicing it flat and fast over deep point. Awesome!

19.5

Philander to Sarwan, OUT, Gone now. Fullish, on the leg and middle, almost yorker length and Sarwan gets under the ball and hits it straight to long-on

19.6

Philander to Ramdin, 1 run, full and outside off, sliced away past point. West Indies finish on 205.

That will take some getting. South Africa have packed their side with allrounders. So we are in for some chase here. HRG says this is the sixth instance of a team scoring 200 or more in Twenty20 cricket. Australia have done it thrice, South Africa once and West Indies twice.

Join us in a short while for the chase. It will be Anand Vasu who will start off the proceedings on the other side of the break.

End of over 20 (9 runs) West Indies 205/6
D Ramdin    6* (4b 1x4)      VD Philander    4-0-35-2
DJ Bravo    0* (0b)      JJ van der Wath    4-0-33-2
