ICC World Twenty20 - 24th match, Group E

South Africa v India

India won by 37 runs

Hello and welcome to coverage of India's clash against South Africa.

Quickly lets go to the news, which is that India have won the toss and chosen to bat.

There's also some bad news for India as Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of this match with tendonitis of the left elbow. Yuvraj was the star for India in their crunch game against England, hitting a 12-ball half-century including six sixes off one over. Dinesh Karthik has replaced Yuvraj Singh in the playing eleven for this game.

There's also one change for South Africa, with Makhaya Ntini coming back into the eleven in place of Andre Nel.

There's very little time for the start of this crucial match now. India must win to stay alive in the competition. South Africa can go through even if they don't win as it will then come down to net run rates with New Zealand, India and South Africa on equal points.

At the moment, though, South Africa are doing well in terms of net run rate. New Zealand have to just wait and watch to see how things pan out.

Our man at the ground, S Rajesh, tells us: "There are still quite a few empty seats around, but the organisers promise this is a sell-out. The stadium should be full by the time the South Africans come out for the run-chase"

Rajesh is quick to add: "The grassy embankments are already full though. Plenty of Indian flags fluttering already"

I'm Anand Vasu, and I'll be calling this game for you, along with George Binoy.

Shaun Pollock is on the ground quite early and warming up, bowling off a short run.

The pitch for today is two pitches away from the one on which India played England. This is a fresh pitch, with some cracks on it and a bit of grass as well. It appears to be pretty hard. This should help South Africa's strong pace attack.

The umpires are walking out onto the middle. It's Simon Taufel and Billy Doctrove officiating.

The South African team races out onto the field just behind the umpires and quickly take their positions.

India's openers - Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag - come out to bat soon after.

0.1

Pollock to Gambhir, no run, short of a good length, on the off stump, coming in a touch after pitching, that one goes right through Gautam Gambhir, who defends awkwardly. Appeal for something but it's too high for the lbw and didn't hit bat.

0.2

Pollock to Gambhir, no run, fullish and just slipping down leg, Gambhir shapes to flick and misses, off the pads to the leg side

0.3

Pollock to Gambhir, 2 runs, once again a touch too straight, hint of swing here for Pollock, Gambhir gets across his stumps and flicks the ball away through square-leg and India are off the mark

0.4

Pollock to Gambhir, no run, short of a good length and on the off, defended town towards the off side with an angled bat

0.5

Pollock to Gambhir, 1 run, too full once again and slipping down leg but once again Pollock gets away with it as Gambhir flicks and misses. Hit on the pads.

0.6

Pollock to Sehwag, no run, short of a good length and outside the off, Sehwag has a tentative prod, the ball shapes away nicely, and late, and beats the bat and goes through to the keeper

End of over 1 (3 runs) India 3/0 (RR: 3.00)
V Sehwag    0* (1b)      SM Pollock    1-0-3-0
G Gambhir    3* (5b)

1.1

Ntini to Gambhir, 1 wide, back of a length, outside the off, slanting away from the left-handed Gambhir, the ball goes away further after pitching and is easily called a wide

1.1

Ntini to Gambhir, no run, back of a length once more and pitching on off and middle, Gambhir is forced to play at it but the ball goes away with the angle and beats the bat

1.2

Ntini to Gambhir, no run, short of a length and outside the off once more - that's going to be the length for the moment - defended down to the off side

1.3

Ntini to Gambhir, FOUR, too full, on the pads, Ntini overcompensating here, that's just too straight and Gambhir can walk across his stumps and just tickle the ball down to the fine-leg boundary

1.4

Ntini to Gambhir, no run, short of a length and outside the off, this one is slanting well away and Gambhir can leave it alone to the keeper

1.5

Ntini to Gambhir, no run

1.6

Ntini to Gambhir, FOUR, outside the off and fairly full, Gambhir has time to move across and time the ball through point for a boundary. That should relieve some of the pressure that is building steadily here.

End of over 2 (9 runs) India 12/0 (RR: 6.00)
G Gambhir    11* (11b 2x4)      M Ntini    1-0-9-0
V Sehwag    0* (1b)      SM Pollock    1-0-3-0

2.1

Pollock to Sehwag, no run, short of a good length and outside the off stump, Sehwag thumps that one off the back foot but can't beat the infield

2.2

Pollock to Sehwag, 2 runs, very full and on the pads, Sehwag flicks wristily through midwicket, won't go all the way but some runs on offer

2.3

Pollock to Sehwag, 1 run, good-length ball outside the off, Sehwag opens the face of the bat and runs the ball down to third-man

2.4

Pollock to Gambhir, no run, overpitched and just outside the off. Gambhir tries to hit it really hard through cover but the placement isn't quite there

2.5

Pollock to Gambhir, FOUR, back of a good length and outside the off. Gambhir takes a massive swipe across the line at this one. It's a thick outside edge and the ball goes past the lone slip fielder down to third-man

2.6

Pollock to Gambhir, no run, short of a good length and close to the off stump, a bit of pace on that one. Left alone to the keeper

End of over 3 (7 runs) India 19/0 (RR: 6.33)
G Gambhir    15* (14b 3x4)      SM Pollock    2-0-10-0
V Sehwag    3* (4b)      M Ntini    1-0-9-0

3.1

Ntini to Sehwag, FOUR, very full and on the off stump. Sehwag gets quickly across to the off side and uses his wrists as much as he can to whip that through square-leg. That is a quality shot for four

3.2

Ntini to Sehwag, 1 bye, This one keeps low! Outside the off and it just rolls along the ground to the keeper. This pitch is going to be pretty tough to bat on. Sehwag plays and misses outside the off and the ball goes through to the keeper

3.3

Ntini to Gambhir, 2 runs, short one dug in, it's the first we've seen so far, Gambhir goes for the pull. He's very late on the shot and the ball goes high rather than far. Vernon Philander goes for the ball but doesn't even get close at midwicket

3.4

Ntini to Gambhir, no run, fullish and on the off, better length that, Gambhir tries to play to off, squared up a touch, off the edge towards cover

3.5

Ntini to Gambhir, 1 wide, this one is well down the leg side and Gambhir leaves it well alone for the umpire to call it a wide

3.5

Ntini to Gambhir, 1 run, overpitched and on the leg stump, Gambhir flicks well but can't beat the diving fielder at short fine-leg

3.6

Ntini to Sehwag, 1 run, short of a good length and on the stumps, slanting in to Sehwag, he dabs the ball to the on side with soft hands and pinches a quick single

End of over 4 (10 runs) India 29/0 (RR: 7.25)
V Sehwag    8* (7b 1x4)      M Ntini    2-0-18-0
G Gambhir    18* (17b 3x4)      SM Pollock    2-0-10-0

4.1

Pollock to Sehwag, 1 run, fullish and outside the off, played down to third-man for a single

4.2

Pollock to Gambhir, 1 run, short of a length and outside the off stump, Gambhir slashes that down wide of third-man for a single

4.3

Pollock to Sehwag, 1 run, fullish and on the pads, Sehwag once again is quick to go across and dab the ball away to the leg side for runs

4.4

Pollock to Gambhir, OUT, Gone! India lose their first one. It's Gambhir who falls. He comes down the pitch and tries to heave the ball over the on side. He can't quite get hold of it and the ball goes up in the air. This time the fielder calls it - it's Graeme Smith - and settles under a catch at mid-off after running a few yards.

G Gambhir c Smith b Pollock 19 (19m 19b 3x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Dinesh karthik is the new batsman.

4.5

Pollock to Sehwag, 1 run, overpitched and on the pads, Sehwag once again has no trouble working the ball away through the on-side

4.6

Pollock to Karthik, OUT, Another! Dinesh Karthik falls! That was a rather uncontrolled shot first up. Pollock pitches one up on the pads and Karthik flicks lazily. The ball loops up in the air and straight into Albie Morkel's hands at square-leg. Karthik didn't even try to hit that one especially hard. Now that's put India in a spot of bother after a reasonably good start on a tricky pitch.

KD Karthik c JA Morkel b Pollock 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

End of over 5 (4 runs) India 33/2 (RR: 6.60)
     SM Pollock    3-0-14-2
V Sehwag    11* (10b 1x4)      M Ntini    2-0-18-0

5.1

Ntini to Sehwag, OUT, On fire! It's Sehwag gone now and India are in deep, deep trouble here. That was a soft dismissal after an extremely promising start from Sehwag. That was short of a length and outside the off, Sehwag plays away from his body without much conviction, trying to steer the ball through the off side and only manages an edge. Mark Boucher pouches the catch.

V Sehwag c †Boucher b Ntini 11 (23m 11b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

5.2

Ntini to Sharma, no run, short of a length and outside the off, tentatively played at and missed

5.3

Ntini to Sharma, no run, short of a good length once more and on the off, played off the back foot down to point

5.4

Ntini to Sharma, 1 run, quite full this time and on the stumps, Sharma walks across and works the ball down to fine-leg

5.5

Ntini to Uthappa, no run, just short of a driving length and on the off, Uthappa comes across and defends down to the off side

5.6

Ntini to Uthappa, no run, fullish and on the off, this one is quick from Ntini, the ball slants in and Uthappa goes forward and across in defense. The ball comes off the edge and hits pad and there's a loud shout for the lbw. Turned down by Taufel.

End of over 6 (1 run) India 34/3 (RR: 5.66)
RV Uthappa    0* (2b)      M Ntini    3-0-19-1
RG Sharma    1* (3b)      SM Pollock    3-0-14-2

6.1

Pollock to Sharma, 1 run, fullish and quite straight, Sharma just plays the ball to the on side and sets off for a single

6.2

Pollock to Uthappa, 2 runs, fullish and on the stumps once more, Uthappa walks across and flicks. It's uppish but in the gap and timed quite well. The ball runs down to midwicket

6.3

Pollock to Uthappa, no run, short of a driving length and on the off, defended a touch awkwardly towards the off side

6.4

Pollock to Uthappa, no run, short of a driving length and on the off, Pollock hitting a good line and length here, defended back down the pitch

6.5

Pollock to Uthappa, no run, short of a good length and outside the off, Uthappa walks well across and gets outside the line and tries to flick. There's an appeal for the lbw but that's clearly not out.

6.6

Pollock to Uthappa, no run, full and on the off, driven back to the bowler. End of an excellent spell from Pollock. This is more like the Pollock we know in international cricket. In previous games he's been taken for quite a few runs by some of the lesser lights of world batting. Here, on his home ground, Pollock has put in a solid performance.

End of over 7 (3 runs) India 37/3 (RR: 5.28)
RV Uthappa    2* (7b)      SM Pollock    4-0-17-2
RG Sharma    2* (4b)      M Ntini    3-0-19-1

7.6

van der Wath to Uthappa, SIX, another short one banged in. Uthappa sees this one really early and is in position in a flash. Aggressive front-foot pull and this is sweetly struck. The ball sails into the stands over midwicket

RV Uthappa    9* (10b 1x6)      JJ van der Wath    1-0-9-0

M Morkel to Sharma, no run, very full and just slanting onto leg stump, Sharma defends a touch awkwardly back down the pitch

9.2

van der Wath to Uthappa, 1 run

9.3

van der Wath to Sharma, no run, short of a good length and on the stumps, played back down the pitch to the bowler

9.4

9.5

van der Wath to Sharma, FOUR, short of a good length and outside the off stump, out comes the pull and it's hit in front of square. It's not timed too well but still has enough on it to go all the way.

9.6

van der Wath to Sharma, FOUR, Down the pitch and bang. Sharma goes for this one, clouting it over cover. It's not terribly pretty but at the moment it's working
